About the Author Larry Evans was born March 22, 1932 in New York City. In 1951 at age 19 he became the first player ever to win the United States Chess Championship in a tournament where Samuel Reshevsky was also playing. Evans was an American chess grandmaster, author, and journalist. He won or shared the U.S. Chess Championship five times and the U.S. Open Chess Championship four times. He represented the U.S. in eight Chess Olympiads over a period of twenty-six years, winning gold (1950), silver (1958), and bronze (1976) medals for his play. He wrote a long-running syndicated chess column in newspapers and in Chess Life magazine. He wrote or co-wrote more than twenty books on chess. He was the long time mentor and assistant to Bobby Fischer, accompanying Fischer to international chess tournaments. He was Fischer's second for the Candidates matches leading up to the World Chess Championship 1972 against Boris Spassky, though not for the championship match itself. He was essentially the ghost writer and editor of "My 60 Memorable Games" by Bobby Fischer. He died on November 15, 2010 in Reno Nevada after a gall bladder operation. Kenneth Ray Smith was born on September 13, 1930 in Olney, Texas. He played football for Southern Methodist University as quarterback but after he was injured he took up chess. He became the only chess master in the South and Southwest. His primary business was S & S Utility Contracting Company, Inc. In 1962 he started Chess Digest magazine on the side. It eventually became the largest publisher of chess books and periodicals in the United States. Ken helped and encouraged many young chess players in the development of their careers. He won more than 200 chess tournaments in his life, including eight times Texas Champion, seven times Southwest Open champion, four times Southern Open champion, and one time each winner of the British Major Open and the Mexican Open championship. He earned the international title of FIDE Master with a FIDE rating of 2360. He died on February 4, 1999 in Dallas Texas and was survived by his parents, his wife Elaine, four children, four stepchildren and three grandchildren.

Super book, diagram for every move, but in English Descriptive Notation By Michael Goeller This is one of my favorite chess books, mostly because it features a diagram for every move so that you can read it anywhere without a board. The analysis is excellent, the cartoons and photos are great history, and the book itself is nicely produced. What you need to know, though, is that it is written in English Descriptive notation (1.P-Q4 Kt-KB3 or 1.P-K4 P-K4) which is pretty much a foreign language to any player not alive during the match. (Notice that the preview of the book shows no moves, which is very misleading). With diagrams for every move, of course, this is not a huge problem (except in the annotations). But it would have been really super if this great book were given a full update to algebraic notation. That would get six stars.

As far as criticism that it is not in algebraic notation, I feel the players today who don't learn both notation systems are short changing themselves. The older system is much more enjoyable when replaying a game on really nice sets that don't have the letters and numbers printed on the edges of the board.
