About the Author Matthew Carr is a journalist who has written for "Esquire," the "New York Times," "The Observer," and "Marie Claire," among other publications. He is the author of "Blood and Faith" (a "New York Times" Editors' Choice) and "The Infernal Machine," both available from The New Press, as well as the acclaimed memoir "My Father's House." He lives in Derbyshire, England.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Lots and lots of mistakes in this book... By Historian This book is full of mistakes. The entire town of Lexington, VA was not burned during the war (only VMI was); John Pope did not command the Army of the Potomac; Paducah is in KY not MS! the author also mistakes the number of casualties in a battle (killed, wounded, MIA) with the number of killed. There are dozens of examples in the book, which should have been proofed by an experienced Civil War historian to avoid these errors. The editorial staff should take half the blame for that. The author is not a historian, and the shoddy research shows it.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Amorphous By Amazon Customer The author begins with a balanced and fair minded account of Sherman's March through the South. From then on, although Sherman is periodically mentioned, there is not much connection with Sherman. There were numerous destructive military marches before and after Sherman in no way affected by what Sherman did or thought.. However, the weakest part of the book are the superficial and biased accounts of the wars in the Philippines and Vietnam. The author ignores the Communist strategy of terror in Vietnam (the Philippine insurgents were not slackers in this regard), although military forces act and react based on what the enemy does. Mr. Carr then continues through the history of American wars to show that no matter how many technological advances are made, civilians continue to suffer. This is true, but hardly revelatory. The author also over emphasizes the significance of the "American way" of war. For instance, many might regard the current problems in Iraq as a result of poor decision making in the Bush administration, rather than the product of American traditions in warfare. There are many interesting passages in this volume, but the book lacks a thematic backbone.

Nader Brilliant historical work emphasizing Sherman's legacy as a general and as a wartime strategist, inventing the strategy of scorch and burn that the Nazis used in WWII. Yet, Sherman himself seemed to display great civility and politeness to his victims. A terrify and wee worthwhile book to read.
