SOMETIMES ALL IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS The public perception of religious institutions is that the people who enter these Institutions are good and caring and compassionate. Though this story is a work of fiction, it is based on reality and that reality is: SOMETIMES ALL IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS.

It has all the mirth of a death knell. Move over, Magdalene Sisters, Doubt, and Evelyn. This is not a mere book: it is an expose of stultifying degradation and dehumanizing robotic regimentation in an Irish convent with the counterintuitive name of "Fairview."Through the indomitable spirits the likes of Sister Elizabeth, one prays (?) that light will outshine the dark, dank setting of the convent and the hapless Postulants who have found their way there. As the lyrics of Phil Coulter's "The Town I Loved So Well" profess, "Their spirits have been bruised, never broken." Or so one hopes. The last chapter of the book leaves one with the vacant hope that this kind of oppression, of vile human subjugation under the guise of religious piety, does not exist today.Still an uneasy feeling gnaws viscerally. And sometimes a bruise is an painful as a break.A wake-up call of a tome, brilliantly crafted. Read it, and be enLIGHTened.

Prather It Doesn't Ring a BellRacer LynchIt Doesn't Ring a Bell, by Racer Lynch, will ring plenty of bells with readers given the recent scandals facing the Catholic church. Although written as a work of fiction, Lynch's book has a strong basis in fact. The behind-the-scenes view given to readers of a convent in Ireland will chill readers to the core and cause them to question any notion they have of such institutions as places of refuge and sanctuary for those behind their walls. As the days wear on, the young women come to realize that the idyllic views they had of life as a nun, serving God, are nowhere near the reality they face. Each step brings them closer and closer to becoming little more than robots. Lynch has a way of describing in painful details each atrocity and insult to the individual that the women face. Lynch has a unique talent for painting vivid portraits with words. Readers will feel transported into the world of the convent, sometimes to their great horror.Lynch reaches her readers minds and most importantly, hearts by paying careful attention to her characters. If it were not for her very human and fragile cast, readers would be left feeling disconnected from the horrors which Lynch exposes them to. Lynch works on the reader by insuring that they will relate and care deeply for the woman of the convent. If readers are looking for pleasant read to escape the day-to-day, they should not take up Lynch's It Doesn't Ring a Bell. For readers who are brave enough to face an often terrifying reality, they will be rewarded with having their eyes and minds opened. Set mostly in the late 1940's and early 1950's, we can truly hope that there has been progress in the ensuing sixty plus years, but given the headlines we see, we can't help buy have sad doubts that the trials of Sister Catherine and her kind are not still ongoing. Lynch is to be commended for bringing the details of the horrors often found in convents into the light.

The descriptions of the emotional, psychological and often physical abuse of the young women who entered the convent with fervor and energy leaves the reader struggling. Why did these young women stay? More importantly, why did the abuse be allowed to continue? Lynch brings into the light the horrors that existed, and may still exist, behind closed doors of convents. Who would have guessed that the sisters who taught us, who cared for us in the hospitals and orphanages in the fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and up to the present, might have been subjected to such atrocities once their work day was over. If this abuse continues to exist today, especially as the population of sisters is declining, we need to know about it. This book is just the beginning of a journey to find the answer to these questions. Today, abuse in schools, hospitals, nursing homes is not tolerated. The scandals rocking the church are still reverberating. This book begs another question. Since the world of the convent is closed to outsiders, what recourse do nuns, who have been or currently are being abused, have? The question demands scrutiny, not by church officials but by involvement with state agencies that deal with such abuse. This book is a revelation. Read it and have an epiphany.
