Screenwriting books did not begin with Syd Field, in 1913 there were four screenwriting how to books published, with at least one more in the following year. There have been screenwriting books for as long as there have been films! So let's take a look at one of the most popular books from this era, "How To Write Photoplays" by the #2 screenwriter at the time, Anita Loos. In addition to the full text of the original book and a complete screenplay by Loos, we'll look at Ms. Loos' career, the role of women in Hollywood at the time (over half of all copyrighted films in this period were written by women), and the reason why there were so many women screenwriters, producers, directors and studio executives. Hint: the 19th Amendment. We will also look at how the lessons from this 1920 book apply to screenwriting today. 60,000 words total, including the original 40,000 word book *plus* 20,000 words which are brand new for this edition! Also includes vintage photos, a real screenplay page from 1920, and some wonderful historical photos of the women's movement (including the "Silent Sentinels" chained to the White House gate!). This book is where history and screenwriting intersect, and the first in a series of *two dozen* vintage screenwriting books with added screenwriting information and historical information.

Martell wrote probably the best practical book on the craft, The Secrets of Action Screenwriting, but he was by no means the first to publish on the topic. He's re-publishing a series of screenwriting books from the silent film era, which is amazing in itself, but with this first one he's done much more than that. The original author, Anita Loos, was a working screenwriter herself, and her biography and bone fides are presented here in a very detailed (and interesting) forward. It's a great overlook of the times in which she worked, and coupled with her original book, it's both a fascinating read and a useful addition to any screenwriter's library (turns out they had problems with the Second Act back then, too). Add this one to your collection; I'm looking forward to the next books in Martell's 'vintage' series!

Advice on writing from a master of the craft By Tech journalist A brilliant book on the technique of writing stories by Anita Loos, who wrote hundreds of films in the days when women wrote most Hollywood movies. There's also a long and interesting foreword by Martell on Loos and the history of women writers in early American films. One technical glitch - none of the dashes remain in the Kindle file, making the language at times very odd. I would suggest that the publisher remaster the Kindle file and reissue it as an update, because parenthetical sentences are butchered by their dashes being removed.

While writing has changed since the silent era, there are still many gems in this book, and some insights explained in a new way - which may be of benefit to some writers. I don't recommend many books to others, this one is one of the few I will. While you can find this for free several places on the internet, I enjoyed reading Martell's intro and I'm thankful he's taken the time to make this available here - and in good form.
