The legendary German U-boats wrought havoc throughout the oceangoing world during the Second World War. They plundered supply routes, enforced blockades and were also very effective in combat against Allied warships. That they did this against massive odds, under close scrutiny from the air forces and navies of the various Allied powers, is well known. The story that U-Boats of the Second World War: Their Longest Voyages tells is far more than that, however. It concentrates on how the U-boats existed, each no longer than four modern articulated lorries and carrying up to 60 crew, in cramped conditions. Focusing on the specially built craft that undertook the longest voyages, it looks at how the crews survived, how they lived and died and how they were able to carry out their missions in such difficult circumstances. Using many previously unpublished documents from the German U-boat museum to lend first hand authenticity to the book’s narrative, it also draws on much previously unpublished information from the Government Code and Cypher School Naval Histories at Bletchley Park. From initial success to eventual failure, this is a remarkable story of endurance, courage and comradeship in craft that terrified the world for the most critical period of the Second World War. The author, Jak P. Mallmann Showell, is himself the son of a U-boat diesel mechanic who disappeared in hostile waters two months before the author was born.

Casale Jak Mallmann Showell is likely the most accomplished and knowledgeable author when it comes to writing about the German Kriegsmarine in WWII. This book I think is one of his better works and the though the long range U-boat missions have been spoken about in some of his other books, its definately a topic that should be expaneded into an entire book. Almost the first half of the book contains a few chapters that expand on the role, strategies and life for sailors serving in U-Boats on long distance patrols. If you have read much on U-Boats some of the points you probably know already but I still found a number of details that I dont believe I had ever read about before. The second half of the book focuses on the story of a few of the long distance boats that survived and Showell goes into nice detail of the crews experiences battling not only the allies but of boredom, the heat and their long confinements among other things. As usual Showell has placed great photos throughout the book of pictures that the majority of which I had never seen before. Its great that he seldom uses the same photos in multiple books. I find sometimes his opinions regarding the war sometimes odd but overall his interest in the topic and willingness to investigate and explore the subject in my opinion makes him one of the great authors turning out WWII related books over the past 30 years. If you like reading about U-Boats I believe you would probably enjoy this latest work by him.

Definitely gives you a different point of view By DIEGO VELASCO BATARCE The book gives you a different view of the life this people had inside this u-boats, it provides you with a lot of information and details that you couldn't possible imagine. It's written by the son of a u-boat's Captain of the second war, hence it's very accurate.Sometimes you can feel that it tends to be a little too detailed on aspects like the crew's daily style of life, losing the big picture in basically what military history lovers may want to read. However, it's excellent if you like to share old war stories with your friends.
