Discovering an ancestor in Canada's wilds By Kevin (Ric) Richardson Forgotten Roots – Richard Whitten BarnesIn Forgotten Roots, Richard Whitten Barnes drives genealogical wheels through the wilds of northern Canada to bring five generations of pioneers to the present day. Well at least the first and second to today, in a vivid, fast moving adventure. He brings a raw land’s vast emptiness, its people’s hardships yet essential guts to master them, right out into the open. Whilst a true adventure, sparklingly told in his typical style, it has a full measure of romance twisting through its pages. It’s indeed instructive as well as exciting—another fine Whitten Barnes history lesson.Kev Richardson

Hoopfer Forgotten Roots was an interesting read, especially for those of us familiar with the St. Joseph Island/Mackinac area. The characters and stories of Annette and Parcher were well developed but I would have liked the characters and stories of Thomas and Andrea Blake to be expanded. The parts of the story related to them lacked depth. I would also like to have more history including the details of the war of 1812. That would have made it a more interesting historical novel. This book could have been twice as long.

In "Roots" he cleverly weaves us through generations of history andfamilies to his trademark mysterious endings. The historical settings and events are real--- his characters may as well be.A beautifully written, fascinating story. Readers would benefit some if they would read Barnes' "Bad Medicine" first, but that'snot necessary to enjoy this very nice book.
