In All Souls, Michael Patrick MacDonald told the story of the loss of four of his siblings to the violence, poverty, and gangsterism of Irish South Boston. In Easter Rising he tells the story of how he got out. Desperate to avoid the “normal” life of Southie, Michael reinvents himself in the burgeoning punk rock movement and the thrilling vortex of Johnny Rotten, Mission of Burma, and the Clash. At nineteen MacDonald escapes further, to Paris and then London. Out of money, he contacts his Irish immigrant grandfather -- who offers a loan, but only if Michael will visit Ireland. It is this reluctant journey “home” that offers MacDonald a chance at reconciliation -- with his heritage, his neighborhood, and his family -- and a way forward.

Downtown Boston was only three stops but worlds away from Old Colony Project. I was ten, and Southie’s busing riots of the past two years had now dissipated into the occasional scuffle with the police. Still, everyone in our neighborhood always said how dangerous it was to leave. It was still the world against Southie and Southie against the world. So for me there was a terrifying thrill in leaving the neighborhood at all. The more I snuck on those trains, the more it felt like traveling to another country, like I was a tourist about to see strange lands and stranger people for the very first time. At first our technique was basic. We’d wait at the top of the stairs of Andrew Station until we heard a train arriving, then dart down the stairs, hop over the turnstiles, and bolt for the train’s doors. By the time we were lined up at the four turnstiles, the train would be just making its final wshhhh sound, which Kevin said was the air releasing from the brake cylinder. We’d each lift off, hands on either side of the turnstile, and drive our legs over the bars feet first, landing as far out as we could. By the time we landed, the fare taker would be screaming and knocking on his scratched and blurry Plexiglas windows, mouthing what I imagined was “You little fucks!” Right about then I knew we would hear the train doors open with a collective rumble. If we did it according to Kevin’s exact timing — if we started running downstairs at just the right moment, when the train was first coming to a halt with a long screech of the brakes — we’d usually make it inside just before we felt the suction of the doors closing behind us. No one ever chased after us in the early days, so we probably didn’t have to turn it into the heart-racing caper it always felt like. But it was great each time to feel the breeze of those clackety doors nearly catching my shirt. I’d take a deep breath in relief, and then in expectation. If the train we hopped came from the suburbs, it would be one of the brand-new modern ones, carrying all whites. But if it had come from Dorchester it would be one of the old, rundown ones and filled with blacks. I would go off by myself to grab a seat and silently take in all the newness, black or white. But my brother Kevin seemed interested only in “getting the fuck in, and getting the fuck out” — back to Southie. To him we were on a mission, and he was all business. He’d make me stand up so that we were all sticking together. He’d keep us huddled around him while he told us what to do and what not to do around all these dangerous blacks and goofy- looking white people from the world that was not Southie. And he’d whack me in the head every time I snuck a glance at the people he was talking about. But after a few minutes our huddle would fall apart. As we tried to keep our feet firmly planted on the bumpy ride, I always seemed to have the worst balance, flailing backward and sideways with the train’s chaotic twists and turns. I didn’t mind, though, as long as I never hit the floor.Riding the trains was my favorite thing to do even before the trips with Kevin. Ma always told us we should want to go places, like Dorchester or Jamaica Plain. “For Chrissake, don’t you wanna see the world?” she said. On my eighth birthday she took me all the way to Park Street Station and put me on the Green Line to Jamaica Plain, where Nana would be waiting at the other end to take me out for a birthday dinner. The old trolley looked like it was the first one ever built, with bars over square windows that opened. Best of all, it had a driver’s booth at both ends — I guessed that was so it didn’t have to turn around at the end of the line. That seemed like the greatest day in the world, being trusted to get on a Green Line trolley all by myself. I kept thinking that to drown out how nervous I was getting. I sat in the backward- facing driver’s seat and waved to Ma on the platform while I pretended to myself that I was the conductor. Ma disappeared from view, and I distracted myself by trying to think up an excuse for why I was driving backward. But before I could, all the excitement and the backward driving made me puke out the window into the blackness of the tunnel. I went to sit in a normal remaining seat, to pretend like nothing had happened. On the forty-five- minute-long journey, I let my fears get the best of me, though, and imagined that I would end up on this one-way trip forever and never see my family again. Worst of all, I was soon the only passenger remaining. When the train came to a final screeching halt, the driver shut off the engine and the lights and barked, “Last stop! Arborway!” while packing up his things like he was going home. My heart was in my mouuuuuth until I saw Nana waving and running across the ghost town of a train yard. The sight of Nana was unmistakable, always in a loose navy blue polka-dot dress, shoes you saw at drugstores, and a flowered kerchief tied snugly under her chin. “For Chrissake, you look like Mother Hubbard,” Ma would snap at her when Nana complained about Ma’s miniskirts and spike heels. For me though, Nana’s old-fashionedness was calming. And this day the sight of her was more comforting than ever. I hopped off the trolley stairs in one leap. Nana greeted me as she always did, not saying hello but spitting on a napkin that seemed like it had been in her purse forever and rubbing it into my cheeks until they hurt. Nana talked about rosy cheeks like they were the most important thing in the world for people to see. “We’ll go for a wee supper now,” she said in that Donegal way that made everything sound like both an exclamation and a question. Well over my fears, I greeted her by saying that riding the subways was just about the greatest thing in the world and that I couldn’t wait to do it again.Going home from fare-jumping trips with Kevin and his crew was easier than the trip out. We’d walk from Filene’s to South Station and press the red stop button hidden near the ground at the top of a wooden escalator so ancient- looking that Kevin convinced me it was from “colonial days.” After we pressed the button, the escalator would stutter in its climbing motion and then come to a rolling stop. That’s when we’d run down the steep and treacherous steps into the station exit. Each wooden step was about one foot square, and I always wondered if people were skinnier in colonial times. At the bottom of the escalator was an unmanned gate that was often left wide open. But even if it was chained and padlocked, you could push out one fence post to make a gap, just enough to slip through. It usually took a bit of teamwork, but it was a cinch. Kevin was the scrawniest and could slip through without anyone’s help, so he’d go first and pull on the gate from the other side. One day I discovered an even better way to get back home to Southie. Kevin was inside Papa Gino’s, pulling a scam he’d recently perfected. When the cashier called out a number, Kevin would wave a receipt from the trash, all excited-like, as if he’d won the lottery. His performance was so convincing — or maybe just distracting — that he’d walk away with a tray full of pizza and Cokes. Okie and Stubs would distract the waiting customers even further by asking if anyone knew where the bathroom was. I was outside on Tremont Street, playing lookout — for what I didn’t know — and daydreaming that Kevin would get a whole pizza pie. But Kevin cared more about scamming stuff for everyone else than for himself, and I knew he would give away his only slice if that’s all he got. While I was supposedly keeping watch, I spied groups of black people gathering nearby and then disappearing through an automatic door to a steel shaft sticking up from the sidewalk. As soon as one cluster of mothers, teenagers, and babies in strollers disappeared through the mystery door, more groups would gather around, press a button, and then loiter at a slight distance. They tried hard to look inconspicuous by rubbing their hands together or jumping up and down in one place as if they were cold, but I knew by their watchful eyes that they were just looking out, like I was supposed to be doing. The door opened, and again the busy sidewalk turned empty. I walked closer and saw through little steamy windows that everyone was squeezed like sardines onto an elevator and then whisked away to some place below Tremont Street. I pressed the button and waited for the elevator to come back up again so I could investigate. “What are you, a fuckin’ losah?” Kevin screamed down Tremont Street just as the doors opened and more people looked around before hopping on. He was running toward me with a single slice of pizza, yelling at me for always wandering off. “You were supposed to keep watch!” he barked, grabbing me by the collar. Okie and Stubs were running behind him, pizzaless. They seemed like they thought they were being chased, and I told them to follow me. We squeezed into the elevator and pushed our way to the middle, surrounded by whole families of black people. Kevin punched me for staring up at them, even though there was nowhere else to look but up. In the end I would get high marks for finding a whole new and simpler method for getting a free ride home. The service elevator led from the street right into the subway system, beyond the conductor booths, and we all filed out nonchalantly. That day I earned the only slice of pizza Kevin was able to score. In the days that followed I was so proud of my find I put the word out all over Old Colony Project about the new way to get home from downtown. That pissed Kevin off — he said the more people knew, the sooner the MBTA would cop on and shut us out. For a time the elevator was the one place in Boston you’d see my neighbors from Southie squeezed into a small space with black people. A key was required for the elevator to work, but the keyhole was always turned sideways, in the on position, either because it was broken or because some transit worker was doing us all a favor. Kevin and his friends didn’t care about leaving Southie except on scamming missions — they never went just to wander. And I could never get my own friends to leave the project, so it wasn’t long before I was venturing alone to see the strange lands and strange people beyond Southie’s borders.Copyright © 2006 by Michael Patrick MacDonald. Also, if you ever have a chance to attend a reading by Michael, GO!!!This description was was done by the publisher...MacDonald's first book told of the loss of the author's four siblings to the violence, poverty, and gangsterism of Boston's Irish-American ghetto. The question "How did you get out?" has haunted him ever since. This narrative of reinvention begins with the young MacDonald's first forays outside the soul-crushing walls of Southie's Old Colony housing project. In greater Boston and eventually New York's East Village, he becomes part of the club scene, providing a 1980s social history and a powerful glimpse of what punk music was for him: a lifesaving form of subversion and self-education. Yet family tragedies eventually draw him home again, to a devastating breakdown induced by trauma and guilt. He meets his father for the first time, as a corpse. Finally, two trips to Ireland, the first as an alienated young man, the second with his extraordinary "Ma," are healing journeys unlike any other in Irish-American literature.

I recommend that you read them consecutively. While they are graphic and evoke extreme emotion, the stark reality of growing up in the Southie projects is for real. No matter how bad your childhood, you will get down on your knees and praise heaven that what you got wasn't this. You will howl out loud laughing and sob wrenchingly, often within the span of one perfectly-penned sentence. These are not books to be read in public. Unfortunately, I did just that on two long plane rides in a middle seat. My aisle seat mate thought I was clearly unhinged, while the window seat mate patted me on the arm and asked me if I was feeling all right. I spent most of the flights in the bathroom so I could howl and sob in relative peace. I assure you these are books you will never forget. The only bad thing about them is the way you feel when you finish. You want to find Michael and ask him to be your BFF, to update you on his and his family's lives, and to hold you and never let you go.

But for some reason this one caught my eye and I decided to give it twenty pages or so. Those twenty pages didn't grip me, but they were enough to make me give it another twenty pages, and on in that vein until I was halfway through the book. MacDonald's previous book (All Souls: A Family Story from Southie) was apparently all about the hard life growing up in Boston's Irish-Catholic "Southie" neighborhood (as seen in movies such as The Departed, Mystic River, Boondock Saints, Good Will Hunting, Gone Baby Gone, and many more). I didn't read that book, but now that I've read this, it's hard to imagine what it would contain that's not in this one. MacDonald writes well in his own voice, as he describes how he "got out" of the cycle of poverty, drugs, crime, etc. that doomed so many of his siblings and friends. What freed him from all that was discovering underground music, specifically the punk scene that was just bubbling up in the late 1970s on the heels of English punk. The discovery of a whole new world and a whole different way of thinking liberated him and took him on a completely different life path from that which killed four of his brothers. To a much less dramatic extent, I had the same experience with punk music, and I suppose that link to my own adolescence is what kept me reading. The other elements of the book (various family tragedies, trips to Ireland to connect with his ancestors, etc.) are all well-written, but just not that interesting to me, although I expect readers who like memoirs will find them much more compelling. There are also some somewhat awkward jumps in time, and elisions of his life story which make the overall framework a bit choppy. On the whole, I still can't decide if I'm glad I read it or not -- I fell neither richer or poorer for the hours spent, but I suspect that has more to do with me than the book. If you like memoirs and have an interest in Boston, or punk rock, or people's struggle to escape their circumstances, give it a chance.

A captivating historical novel which uncovers sensational new information about a scandalous court case that rocked Victorian England The Victorian gossipmongers called them The Petticoat Men. But to young Mattie Stacey, they are Freddie and Ernest, her gentlemen lodgers. It is Mattie who admires their sparkling gowns, makes their extravagant hats and laughs at their stories of attending society balls dressed up as the glamorous "Fanny" and "Stella." But one fateful night Fanny and Stella are arrested, and Mattie is dragged into a shocking court trial, described in newspapers all over England as "The Scandal of the Century." By Amazon Customer Based on the true story of the trial of two men in 1871, THE PETTICOAT MEN places real-life characters into a fictional scenario to create an extremely entertaining, and very readable story. It is true that the young Ernest Boulton and Frederick Park were put on trial for "conspiring and inciting persons to commit an unnatural offence", they were both well-known cross-dressers and suspected homosexuals, although acquitted due to the prosecutions failure to prove either the sexual activity or that wearing women's clothing was actually a crime. The trial was a sensation due to the nature of the allegations, but also because of their connections to members of the aristocracy. In THE PETTICOAT MAN there are more characters from society and establishment drawn into the story, which based on the circles they mixed in, comes across as reasonable conclusions to draw. This is probably helped by the feel of the entire book, which has a truthfulness to it that's incredibly compelling. The central, and most vocal narrator, is Mattie Stacey. Daughter of the owner of the boarding house in which Freddie and Ernest rent a room to store their women's clothing, and to dress, Mattie is absolutely outraged when her family's good name and address are dragged into the gossip and innuendo surrounding the trial. She's not outraged at either of the men, one of whom she is particularly attached to after he had been particularly kind to her, but because she, her mother, and her brother are decent people, who run a clean house and are loyal to their friends, and they most definitely do not run a questionable establishment. Mattie's the star of this book, her voice is so beautifully crafted she's real, and she's fabulous. Brave and true, she might not have had a lot of formal education but she, and her brother, are self-educated, self-motivated and good people. As is her mother, and had been her father - both theatre people themselves which probably means that the men's antics came as less of a matter of comment than it might. The situation that Mattie and her family are dragged into because of the cruel and mindless gossip is difficult, but it seems there is nothing like a difficulty to straighten Mattie's back, to firm her mother's resolve, and to ensure her brother makes the best. He's particularly exercised by the situation as he loses his much loved job as a clerk in Parliament, and in Mr Gladstone's office, and must make do with lesser employment, despite the unfairness. Mattie herself, has had her own trials, widowed at a very young age, betrayed by a lover, her malformed foot is a disability that means that she stands out when she least wants to, and seems to imply that life as a childless widowed hat maker might be her lot. Mind you, there's nothing maudlin about Mattie, nor any of them for that matter. The only downside to THE PETTICOAT MEN is that much of the circumstances leading up to the trial are sketchy, and the fate of Freddie and Ernest a little brush-stroked towards the end. Whilst it's perfectly understandable that the focus would remain with the Stacey family, as this was presented to this reader as a "crime" novel, the balance was a little off. Call it a ripper of a yarn though, and there'd be no quibble at all.[...]

By Froda This is based on a real case in 1870 involving Ernest Boulton and Frederick Park. But it also involves the huge newspaper coverage of the scandal and letters that Barbara Ewing's research uncovered. The letters quoted in the book are genuine. These men dressed as women and paraded themselves at fashionable parties often frequented by the nobility, members of parliament and even royalty (The Prince of Wales). But the story is fictionalised by the addition of the characters who tell the story: Mattie Stacey and her mother who run the boarding house used occasionally by Boulton and Park to house their wardrobes and to dress up for their parties. Both women are strong characters and prepared to speak out on behalf of their lodgers. Their home is named in the papers as a “bordello” or bawdy house, and they become the victims of abuse: Graffiti written on their walls “Sodomite Lovers” etc., Mattie is described as “a crippled whore” (she has a deformed leg and walks with a limp). When they are caught up in the scandal they are obliged to give passionate evidence at the trial. It is a very good read with endearing characters – almost Dickensian – Elijah and Dodo, Billy the parliamentary clerk, Lord Arthur Clinton's mysterious death and subsequent cover-up, and the “smuggler”/fisherman Mackie. Wonderful characters. A great read and thoroughly recommended. Four and a half stars!

The characters continue to develop, leaving just enough mystery to keep me wanting more. I feel totally invested in Patrick and Jennifer's relationship: their struggle toward emotional intimacy challenges them more than their easy physical intimacy. I can relate to that complexity, and I am inspired that they are beginning to come into balance. I'm already impatient for Book 4--what a thrill!

Candy Wild jumped right into it! There was no holding back. I loved Avery, the main character. She was bold and went after what she wanted, she would deal with the consequences later. There was a bit of mystery surrounding the man she meets. I both liked and disliked that we know absolutely nothing about him except that he is wealthy and good looking. I will say that there were a few times where the back and forth POV got confusing. I had to reread a few lines so that I knew whose perspective I was getting. However, that in no way detracted from the story. There was a surprising little twist that I didn't see coming towards the end. But wowza was it a hot little turn in the plot. My interest was definitely piqued and I can't wait to see where the story goes next.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. One of Norton's few historicals, post-Civil War western By Bookivore Drew Rennie, discharged from Forrest's Confederate scouts, has come to Arizona in search of the father he hadn't known he had. Drew is posing as Drew Kirby in order to meet Hunt Rennie, the legendary Don Cazar, owner of a matchless range and prize stallions.Things become complicated with a rebel-hating Army commander, local brigands claiming to be Rebel troops, Don Cazar's adopted son, horse racing, horse theft, and more. This sequel to Ride Proud, Rebel is a more straightforward and coherent tale of a young man looking for his place in the world. It's a satisfying and memorable story that shows the best of Andre Norton's writing.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Andre Norton By Stanley H. Comstock This may be the only Western novel Andre Norton ever wrote.Set in Texas after the end of the Civil War, the adventures are typical Norton.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A favorite book for 40+ years! By Patricia Frisch I am SO glad that this book has been reprinted. It has been one of my favorite books since the first time I read it when I was an early teen. I have since re-read it many times, and it still holds up.It is the story of a young man finding his place in life, and finding a place that he can call home. Many of Andre Norton's books have the same theme, but this is very well handled. That a young man has reservations about presenting himself to his father, when his father didn't even know that he was alive, rings true. I would especially recommend this book to young people, but it would be great for all who appreciate the familiar Andre Norton.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Beware: Sexy Dragon Ahead! By Lanie @ Lanies Book Thoughts Blog Touch of the Irish is a complete story, there is no cliffhanger so no worries there. This is considered part one because there will be two more complete stories to accompany this set.Touch of the Irish has a sexy dragon, feisty faeries and a heroine with a brain. What more could I want? Well, said sexy dragon man is a biker- oh yes, she went there. He's also on the alpha side with a hint of kindness an a big heart. He doesn't know it, but someones about to throw this immortal bachelor a curve ball. Our main heroine is Candice who hasn't been having a very good time of it lately. Her boyfriend cheated on her, she's lost her job and her confidence has been shaken. How can a girl bounce back from such a bad Valentines Day? Well, a job interview is a great start, but what do you do when your interviewer wants to peak at more than your resume? Luckily for Candice she has someone looking after her. Some people believe they have an angel on their shoulder, but what if it's a fairy? A fairy with a pixie dust disorder and a squeaky voice? Course you can't see her or all the trouble she accidentally gets you in. Sheridan happens to be that fairy, she's trying to make things better for Candice, but she's got no idea what she's doing!I really enjoyed this story because it was fun and steamy all wrapped up into a nicely wrapped short story package. I thought it was great getting a real plot with some kinky times an surprises tossed in there. For Morgans first PNR story this one certainly makes a splash. I can't wait to read the next two parts. This is 18+, there are sex scenes.I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This story is filled with wonderful characters, exceptional writing By Barbara Chioffi After a fight with his lover Psyche, Eros, the god of love, imbibes a bit much and on Valentine's Day, shoots his arrows into unsuspecting victims. When he realizes what he has done, he asks his ex-lover, Aine, Goddess of the Faeries, for aid. Thinking they have undone the damage, they suddenly realize there are three women left and the hunt is on. In this story, we meet Candice.Candice has lost everything...her job and her boyfriend, not to mention that it all happened on Valentine's Day. She meets who she thinks will offer her a job, only to discover that he has other things on his mind. She manages to deter his advances but runs into more trouble when a young punk with a gun tries to take her purse. That's when Drake Fallen steps in, he and the pixie, Sheridan. Now the 'fun' begins. Drake is an immortal dragon and when he rescues Candice, all he wants is her, preferably in his bed. There is a catch, however. He cannot take a human as a mate. Candice is human. Or is she? This story is filled with wonderful characters, exceptional writing, and banter that will have you laughing. The characters are well-developed, especially Sheridan, the pixie, who provides many hilarious moments..."naked man, naked man" and "octopussy boy" are just two. She is sent to assist Drake who has no idea what awaits him.I love this book and can't wait to read the second and third in this series. 18+ due to steamy sex. 5 stars.

As the Allies were approaching the German frontier at the beginning of September 1944, the German Armed Forces responded with a variety of initiatives designed to regain the strategic initiative. While the "Wonder Weapons" such as the V-1 flying bomb, the V-2 missile and the Messerschmitt Me-262 jet fighter are widely recognized as being the most prominent of these initiatives upon which Germany pinned so much hope, the Volks-Grenadier Divisions (VGDs) are practically unknown. Often confused with the Volkssturm, the Home Guard militia, VGDs have suffered an undeserved reputation as second-rate formations, filled with young boys and old men suited to serve only as cannon fodder. This groundbreaking book, now reappearing as a new edition, shows that VGDs were actually conceived as a new, elite corps loyal to the National Socialist Party composed of men from all branches of Hitler's Wehrmacht and equipped with the finest ground combat weapons available.Whether fighting from defensive positions or spearheading offensives such as the Battle of the Bulge, VGDs initially gave a good account of themselves in battle. Using previously unpublished unit records, Allied intelligence and interrogation reports and above all interviews with survivors, the author has crafted an in-depth look at a late-war German infantry company, including many photographs from the veterans themselves. In this book we follow along with the men of the 272nd VGD's Fusilier Company from their first battles in the Huertgen Forest to their final defeat in the Harz Mountains. Along the way we learn the enormous potential of VGDs . . . and feel their soldiers' heartbreak at their failure.Among Douglas Nash’s previous works is Hell’s Gate: The Battle for the Cherkassy Pocket, January-February 1944, a work unsurpassed for insight into the other side of the hill in WWII.REVIEWS In this new edition of his text, author Douglas E. Nash investigates the contribution of the Volks-Grenadier Divisions (VGDs) of the German army to the Nazi war effort throughout World War II. Beginning with their first battles in the Hrtgen Forest and culminating in their final defeat at the hands of United States forces in the Harz Mountains, the author reveals the true nature of the VGDs as elite ground forces selected from all branches of the Wehrmact to serve the interests of the National Socialist Party. The author is a retired U.S. Army Colonel currently employed by the U.S. Navy’s Marine Corps University in Virginia.Protoview

By Aaron Tamraz This is an excellent book describing first of all the problems of jelling and training the new influx of men from the Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine along with the "old hands" of the remnants of the 272nd ID, which was for all intents and purposes destroyed in Normandy. It describes the organization and purpose of the VG Divisions and the importance placed on their fusilier battalions. What is interesting is how all down time ,once sent into action, was used for training. This allowed the 272nd to score a few victories, not just defensive successes, but actually making American forces take notice of the veterans sprinkled in with these newly conscripted men from other services. The 272nd was well led, had decorated and combat experienced regimental, battalion, and company commanders, but an unfortunate shortage the rest of German forces suffered from, and that was experienced NCOs.Though ultimately as the title states, victory eluded them, the American forces who faced them got as good as the 272nd gave and earned a healthy respect for this VG Division. I believe this VGD was one of the more successful examples of what most VGDs were.Once again Nash has scored on a great read!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A keeper! By Bob Russell Man, this Veteran can write! IMO seldom has a story about battalion and company level warfare been told with such clarity. Out of sheer luck the author had acquired the in-depth war diary-type info on a late war German infantry regiment. But he had to wait until his own active duty was completed before he could write a book about it! His writing style is concise yet sympathetic to the times and conditions he is writing about. The narrative has a fine and rare balance between objective and subjective that were in play. It is obvious that the guy knew what he was talking about when he wrote it! In addition the editing and proofing is definitely above average compared to similar productions of late. Great job! Funny, but the book's title alone is awkward and not in any way suggestive of the content.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent unit history on a poorly known type of Wehrmacht division. By Mary Hallman Very good work. Colonel Nash changed my perception of the Wehrmacht Vollks Grenadier units, i.e. old men and boys who couldn't fight worth a lick, to one of being pretty much like any Wehrmacht line infantry division in 1944-45 in terms of organization, strength, and reradiness. This book is an excellent story of a division's short existence and steady obliteration over the course of six months. I have no criticisms and even the maps were plentiful and good, something rare in books detailing an individual soldier's or unit's history.

The CSS Shenandoah fired the last shot of the Civil War and was the only Confederate warship to circumnavigate the globe. But what was Captain James Waddell's true relationship with his Yankee prisoner Lillias Nichols and how did it determine the ship's final destination? Without orders, Waddell undertook a dangerous three month voyage through waters infested with enemy cruisers. He risked mutiny by a horrified crew who, having been declared pirates, could be hanged. This is the true story behind the cruise of the Shenandoah--one of secret love and blackmail--brought to light for the first time in 150 years.

The Last To Lower The Confederate To Lower Its Flag By James Gallen Civil War students absorb the minutest details of the land war but some of the conflict’s most interesting tales washed in from the sea.One of those tales is that of the C.S.S. Shenandoah, the Confederate raider terrorized Yankee maritime commerce circumnavigated the globe and fired the last Confederate shot and whose surrender ended organized Rebel resistance. Its voyage from October 1864 to November 1865 is chronicled in “The Last Confederate Ship at Sea” by Paul Williams. Although limited to one ship, it is a microcosm of the history of the Confederate Navy. The Confederate Navy sailed, not to challenge the Unions fleet, but to increase the costs of the war to Northern Marine and, through them, to pressure the Lincoln Administration to negotiate for peace. Soaring insurance premiums drove many American bottoms to seek protection under neutral flags while the raiders, like privateers, paid their own expenses out of their prizes. New England whalers seeking leviathans in the Pacific were common victims of Shenandoah as it took 38 prizes and 1,052 prisoners.Lacking shipyards, the South purchased its vessels by stealth in European markets. Sea King sailed out of the Clyde to become the Shenandoah when it was crewed and loaded with war materials at sea, another success of the Confederate agent, James Bulloch, uncle of Theodore Roosevelt, over American ambassador, Charles Francis Adams, son of John Quincy.Among the most interesting stories from these raiders are their shore visits. Shenandoah had its days of celebrity during its visit to the neutral port of Melbourne in the colony of Victoria, Australia. Colonial society reflected the homeland’s chasm between the opinions of upper and working and upper classes. While its officers and men were the toast of the town its presence ignited legal and journalistic clashes until, its crew full of memories and its hold full of supplies, it sailed back to sea. When Shenandoah’s plunder proved insufficient win its nation’s independence it was left a ship without a country. It eventually completed its voyage by surrendering in Liverpool on November 6, 1865, the last Confederate military or naval unit to lower its flag. The life of a ship is found in its timbers and canvas, but in the minds and hearts of those who serve her. I do not want to spoil it for you, but let us just say that there is a sailor, a woman and a life ever after.Author Paul Williams has crafted an intriguing sea saga of Shenandoah that gives readers a glimpse into the life of other Confederate raiders. If you think you have read enough of the Civil War, pick up “The Last Confederate Ship At Sea”. You will be richly rewarded.I did receive a free copy of this book to read and review.

But this version is certainly different. It starts with Captain James Waddell changing his mind overnight about their final destination saying they are to sail back to Britain. Fearing a hangman's rope, his near-mutinous officers objected. The book then goes back in time to explain why this happened; a love affair between the captain and a previous woman prisoner, Lillias Nichols, which resulted in blackmail by Master's Mate Cornelius Hunt. The evidence includes Waddell's memoirs having been doctored before publication and numerous other documents and events. This is controversial as seen in "Civil War News" recently. The CWN book reviewer stated that the writer had put up a "rather weak case." The author, Paul Williams, wrote to Civil War News challenging the book reviewer to justify this statement. In response, the reviewer wrote a fresh piece (Google "Letter to the Editor - re. The Last Confederate Ship at Sea" ) In this he concedes that based on Williams' research, an "affair took place between Waddell and the lady." He also agreed that Hunt accused Waddell of theft following the cruise, but then said Waddell may have changed course from Australia to procure money or "avoid an encounter with his ex-lover or her husband," rather than blackmail. Williams does in fact, put forward a compelling case for both affair and blackmail which explains the moods and actions by Waddell which so mystified his officers. This included the 3 month voyage back to Britain against orders when, having been declared pirates, they could be hanged. Last Confederate Ship is an enlightening read which sheds new light on the wayward cruise.

I've read some other books about the CSS Shenandoah, which barely compare with this. The author would appear to have unearthed over the last 20 years explanations for mysteries about the ship's cruise including the circumnavigation of the globe. This was done despite the captain's orders requiring the ship to never return to Europe. The author was assisted by a relative of Lillias Nichols, a captive on board. The account of the love affair and subsequent blackmail appear to be true, backed up with documents such as alterations to Captain Waddell's memoirs before publication in 1960, and the book written by Master's Mate Cornelius Hunt which accused Waddell of theft - payback for not having received hush money. The scenario laid out certainly makes sense. Mrs. Nichols also signed a very revealing affidavit which, according to the author, has been misrepresented in other Shenandoah books. In all, The Last Confederate Ship at Sea was a very illuminating read.5 Stars

In the 1920s Prohibition was the law, but ignoring it was the norm, especially in New Orleans. While popular writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald invented partygoers who danced from one cocktail to the next, real denizens of the French Quarter imbibed their way across the city. Bringing to life the fiction of flappers with tastes beyond bathtub gin, Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans: Authentic Vintage Cocktails from A to Z serves up recipes from the era of the speakeasy. Originally assembled by Olive Leonhardt and Hilda Phelps Hammond around 1929, this delightful compendium applauds the city's irrepressible love for cocktails in the format of a classic alphabet book. Leonhardt, a noted artist, illustrated each letter of the alphabet, while Hammond provided cocktail recipes alongside tongue-in-cheek poems that jab at the dubious scenario of a "dry" New Orleans. A cultural snapshot of the Crescent City's resistance to Prohibition, this satirical, richly illustrated book brings to life the spirit and spirits of a jazz city in the Jazz Age. With an introduction on Prohibition-era New Orleans by historian John Magill and biographical profiles of Leonhardt and Hammond by editor Gay Leonhardt, readers can fully appreciate the setting and the personalities behind this vintage cocktail guide with a Big Easy bent. A perfect gift for lovers (and makers) of craft cocktails, arbiters of style, and celebrants of the Crescent City, Shaking Up Prohibition in New Orleans captures the essence of the Roaring Twenties.

Even better, the history of prohibition and of the book is worth the price of the book alone. The madcap illustrations, and poems for each letter of the alphabet, lead to recipes for drinks - at least some of which have been tested out by bartenders. A delight to hold and to read, and will make a great gift!

Shake Up A Good Read By Marilyn You can almost hear the rag time music while leafing through this book that recalls the days of bootleg hooch and the Charleston. You can also shake up a drink you haven't tried before with cocktail recipes found inside laced with art by the author. It's good to keep at hand to look through during a few odd minutes you have to spare or a longer time you can set aside to really enjoy this book.

Rose Weatherston was top of her acting class in small-town Illinois, but in Hollywood, the only roles she’s being offered are spots on the casting couch. Faced with the possibility of having to go back home with her tail between her legs, Rose takes a job as a personal assistant to bridge the gap until she can finally land a legitimate acting role. The advertisement calls for someone discreet, available 24/7, and willing to live-in. It sounds terrible, and more than a little ominous, but as Rose’s best friend points out, beggars can’t be choosers. Turns out that she’ll be working for Cole Dean, the international movie star whose face is on the cover of every tabloid. Cole Dean, the lady killer with the mysterious past, electric green eyes and devil’s smile. Cole Dean, who turns out to be wickedly charming and sexy as hell. Rose tries to deny the instant, intense, and very unwanted attraction. After all, she didn’t say no to the casting couch this many times just to end up sleeping with her boss. But when their mutual desire becomes too much to bear, Rose sets up some ground rules between them. She never wants to see Cole naked. Ever again. So he can stop working out shirtless and stripping when he knows she’s watching. She won’t be a personal lackey in his depraved sex life. Thank you very much. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun, sweet, and incredibly steamy! By Heather / Obsessed With Myshelf This book definitely lives up to its title. This is a hard and fast (and super hot) love story that I really enjoyed. There are no deep thoughts or hard topics to digest and I was totally ok with that. Sometimes you need a quick roll in the hay* that turns into more, right? RIGHT.[*Note: Amazon censors all the good words so I have to come up with "clean versions" to post here. SORRY. blame amazon.]Rose is trying desperately to be an actress but hasn’t been able to land anything. She’s three months behind on her rent and she refuses to hit up the director’s couch in order to get a part. Her best friend recommends that she become a Personal Assistant in order to make some money and get back on her feet. She applies for the only one out there and ends up becoming the PA for Cole Dean, a very very private actor.Rose and Cole are attracted to one another and immediately fall into a sexual dance. Are they just having sex? Are they more? Is she still his employee? Did she really just do the very thing that she claimed she never would? This is somewhat predictable, but God, it was really fun to read. I loved when Rose stood her ground and turned the tables on Cole. The scenes sizzle when they’re together and I swear, my breathing started getting short and hitched in time with Rose. Sweet baby jesus, Cole is one sexy mother.....So yes, hard. fast. delicious. If you’re looking for a book to satisfy a craving for lots of hot sex then you’ve found it. This is a quick and hot read that will leave you smiling. I know I was.[I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review]

Quick yet hot read By MissKris I received a copy of this from netgalley for an honest review, thank you!I was drawn into this book immediately and read it in one sitting. Rose pulled me in and kept me turning the pages. Struggling actress dealing with financial ruin and gets lined up for a job as a personal assistant to a hunky star. This book was set up to be fabulous and I don't feel the author missed the mark with it.The parts that dropped this to a 4 star read for me was how Rose was pretty selfish. But I realize that it's part of a growth thing for character development. With this being a pretty short read, it came across as more selfish/whiny more than anything. And that just irked me. If this had been a bit longer with more time to drag out some character development and she had time to work on that selfishness a bit more...would have thrown it to a 5 star read for sure. I just loved Dean Cole, besides being yummy in the most delicious way...he's got a heart. He wasn't the alpha sort in a domineering way (actually Rose was more dominate and alpha in my opinion) and that was a nice break from the typical erotic romances. The love scenes were HOT and well written. I didn't feel that they were totally out of the realm of reality, never was I rolling my eyes saying "Suuuuuuuurrree, uh huh."This story had me on a rollercoaster of emotions the entire ride, giddy, heartbroken, angry and in the end content. I cannot wait for the next book. This one did not end in a cliffhanger but it looks like more to come from this world Gabriel has created and I'm excited for the ride.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It definitely lived up to the title By Janet I read this straight through in one evening. It definitely lived up to the title. I see that it is the start of a series, but it does stand alone just fine. The story itself is well plotted and the passion and romance are balanced quite well with the storyline. My only caution is that I personally, found the heroine to be quite immature and shallow. That made it a little more difficult for me to root for the happily ever after. I just wanted her to show a bit more growth through the story line. I'm hoping she will make another appearance in the series and that growth will have obvious;y occurred. I would definitely read more from Ana Gabriel. she wove a good story from a string premise.*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchnage for an honest review.
