“The division's expendables.” That's what one division commander called the Ninth Cavalry Blue platoons during the Vietnam War. The Blues, as they were called, were perpetually understrength and considered to be acceptable losses in hopeless situations—but their amazingly successful record proved otherwise.

A firsthand account of mortal combat with the Ninth Cavalry, Flashing Saber is the remarkable story of the brave men who served in the First Air Cavalry Division's reconnaissance squadron. Included is an account of an air-ground raid that overran a regimental command post and killed more high-ranking enemy officers than any similar engagement of the war.

The story begins when a teenager, an Eagle Scout and West Point Prep School student, goes to Vietnam in 1965. Motivated by patriotism and the desire to see combat firsthand, Brennan volunteers for front line duty and spends years as an artillery forward observer and infantryman. Promoted to sergeant and then to lieutenant, Brennan participates in hundreds of assault landings.

An expansion and careful reworking of his previous work, Brennan's War, published in 1985, and in the vein of classic memoirs by Johnnie Clark and Frederick Downs, Flashing Saberis a harrowing firsthand account of life and death in war, one filled with breathtaking details about a renowned unit.

Review Additional reviews of FLASHING SABER are found at :  Amazon.co.UKReviews From BRENNAN'S WAR:"Even for those of us who served in Vietnam, Brennan's story borders on unbelievable. From cover to cover, it is continuous action. My first reaction was that Brennan's War was a work of fiction--no one in Vietnam was involved in enemy contact for such a long period of time. This book is not one battle, it's years of constant  battle. ...when one looks at the time Brennan spent in Vietnam and the type of unit he served with, it becomes real."            - Marine Corps Gazette"Most of "Brennan's War" seems one long, drawn-out firefight. Almost every page contains vivid descriptions of ambush and counter-ambush, air assaults and rescue attempts..."            - Barrett Tillman "...the reader sees bloody combat amid lavishly beautiful surroundings--a juxtaposition so constant it begins to seem natural rather than sadly ironic."            - Sea Power

By Sam Brown An exceptionally well written chronicle of a brave American's three years fightingf the war in Vietnam. I marveled at his recall of personal actions, never mentioning his journal or letters to home. His writings were of particular interest to me, as I also served with the !st Cav during the same time period and was familiar wiith the area of operations that he cites. Where do we find brave Americans like this? Also of interest was his last year in forging young men into effective combat soldiers from doubting Hippies, whose interest was geared more towards pot and indiference. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to know how it was to serve during an epic time of escalation in the war in Vietnam.Want to know more about the 1/9 Cavalry and their exploits? This is the book for you.

It is worth reading.[Update 8/29/2015] Because of the comments to my review, I thought I'd take another look at the book since I wrote the review a couple months after I read the book. I decided to up the star rating by one to 4 Star. Why? 1). It's better than I remember it because I think I got it confused with another book I read during the same time period. 2) The author actually responded to my review. No many authors take the time. Shows he gives a darn what reviewers think and care enough to respond. His response had a dose of humor. Here is my updated review.Mr Brennan is an author a cut above the usual for the war/combat genre. He does a good job of describing the point of view of the soldier in Vietnam. The descriptions of the hardships and danger of the air Cavalry are very good and by all accounts accurate. The book is technically sound from a writing standpoint. I'll make an effort to read more of his books.

Brennan's accounts are very accurate and describe the level of combat I experienced. When I went back on my second tour in 1969, like Brennan, I noticed a marked change in the caliber of soldiers fighting in Vietnam. More racial tension and a less than professional approach by many officers and NCOs. I've read many of Matthew Brennan's books but this one is mostly about his own experience and his bonding with the Blues of 1966 and 1967. I can identify with that feeling as we continue to attend reunions from the group of our era, 1967-68. I am glad he made it home and has given voice to many gallant soldiers that served with the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Airmobile.
