One night in Clarksdale he meets the mysterious Fat Man, who offers him the chance to see the real blues of the 1930s. Unable to refuse this offer, Hobo John embarks on a journey through the afterlife in the company of Travellin' Man, an old blues guitarist who shows him the sights, sounds and everyday life in the Mississippi Delta. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. gritty historical realism with a supernatural twist By Victoria d open up my review of this book by saying I don’t really think I’m the target audience for this story. I’m not a major blues fan, although I like what I like, but I read and enjoyed the authors other works and, having read the opening chapter of Fat Man Blues in Evel Knievel and The Fat Elvis Diner , I was hooked. The story follows Hobo John, a recent widower who is dying of stomach cancer. He meets the mysterious Fat Man in a bar in Clarksdale. The Fat Man offers hobo John a deal – he will cure his cancer if hobo John agrees to work for him, recording blues artists in an afterlife set in 1930s Mississippi. What follows is a romp through the heart and home of the Delta Blues era, with supernatural, Faustian details cleverly woven into an historical narrative.Although, as I said, I am not a major blues fan, it is clear the author is – a love for the material shines through the storyline and made me, as a casual reader, eager to find out more about the era, and look up the artists mentioned. I am sure a fan of the music would pick up far more references than I did, the writer is skilled at taking real life anecdote and mixing it with a hint of myth and a healthy dose of narrative to weave into a tightly paced , fast moving tale that kept me reading on. I fell in love with so many characters along the way that this review would run on far too long if I were to mention them all, but special mention has to be made of the mysterious Gabel, brave and feisty Stella and Travellin’ Man, who stole my heart completely. I have heard rumours of a sequel to Fat Man Blues, and I hope that he appears in it.Some people man struggle to settle into the writing style, but I very much enjoyed it. I’m not always a fan of dialogue written in accent and dialect but in this particular case it immersed me in the story and enhanced the whole experience for me, drawing me in and keeping me right there in 1930s Mississippi with Hobo John.Blues fans will love this book, but I’m proof you don’t need to have any knowledge of the music to enjoy this story. Anyone who like gritty historical realism with a sprinkling of the mythological will love this book. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a sequel to come out soon.

Richard Wall May Have Created a New Genre of Fiction By Ran Walker Before reading Richard Wall's heartfelt homage to blues music, I did not even realize there could be a thing most aptly described as Blues Fantasy. In the story, a white Englishman is given the opportunity to go back into a past set in an alternative universe. To gain access to this world, there is, of course, a Faustian bargain made. But make no mistake about it; this blues world is not Disney-esque. It's raw and real. This novel is at times hilarious, then haunting, but always smart. Richard clearly has a love of the Delta blues that is virtually unmatched. If you love the blues music of the Mississippi Delta, then this book is a must-read.

By Jennifer Sinquefield Fat Man Blues is an adventure into the Mississippi Delta and the original Delta Blues. This book is a reflection and result of the author’s pilgrimage through the Mississippi Delta. I’ve lived in the Mississippi Delta and I’ve worked in the Mississippi Delta for years. This book is a fun experience and I truly enjoyed it! I even went to several of the sites that were a part of this epic story of a British man, Hobo John and the original Delta Blues. Before you begin your journey into the Mississippi Delta Blues, look up the author’s website for the playlist of Blues songs to listen to. This was my first time that I’ve read a book by this author, Richard Wall. He had me hooked from the very beginning. His character development, to descriptions of the places in the Mississippi was on point. I felt as if I were there as I read each page. The main character, Hobo John, living with knowing each day would be his last, takes on the Fat Man to discover and record the original Blues. I have hope that this is the first in a series and that Hobo John figures out how to return… Fat Man Blues is a gripping journey, which kept me sitting on the edge of my seat guessing what would happen next to Hobo John. So, go ahead and click on add to cart! Enjoy! Thanks to Richard Wall for writing a gripping tale of Hobo John’s journey and what an adventure into the Mississippi Delta Blues… and inspired my new adventures into the Mississippi Delta Landscape and into the Blues!
