About the Author Born in 1895, Anne Austin began by writing romance novels about young women in the mid 1920's but soon turned her talents to producing a string of mysteries through the 1930's, some of which appeared as serials in newspapers.. Many of these mysteries feature as the detective “Bonnie” Dundee, Special Investigator for the District Attorney, including Murder Backstairs, The Avenging Parrot, Murder at Bridge, and One Drop of Blood. Several of her mysteries were translated into French, including Le Pigeon Noir and Le Crime Parfume. Despite her success as a novelist, Anne Austin disappears from the public record after the 1930's.

Mann "Murder at Bridge" begins as an apparent parlor mystery when former Broadway dancer Juanita Selim is shot during a society bridge party. Selim, an apparent outsider, is the host of the party and leaves during the last hand when she is dummy (the member of the bidding party who turns her hand down and does not need to be there to play the hand) and goes to her bedroom to make herself "pretty-pretty" for the men who are in the process of arriving for the post-bridge cocktail party. Looking "pretty-pretty" seems to be Selim's general aim in life as she apparently has won if not the hearts, at least the eyes of most of the society men.The trajectory of the bullet may indicate that the shooter stood outside the bedroom window, but the district attorney's new special investigator, Bonnie Dundee, believes the shooter probably stood inside the window. This idea does not sit well with homicide Captain Strawn, who seems to prefer the idea of an outsider to that of one of Hamilton County's elite. What begins as an apparent parlor mystery (complete with an entire chapter devoted to the playing of the "death hand"--those not familiar with bridge will probably find this part dull or even incomprehensible) soon turns into a cross between an almost-locked-room mystery and a modest police procedural. Unless the captain is right, the killer has performed an impressive act of hiding the murder weapon and avoiding detection. Dundee, for his part, is trying to understand the victim's past and her relationship to the society members with whom she seems an ill fit."Murder at Bridge" at first seems like a dry mystery, a combination of a reasonably puzzling mystery with stereotyped characters and a forced romance. However, the last two-thirds of the book prove more complex as the characters, especially the victim, are fleshed out. The novel gains depth and becomes far more enjoyable. As for the apparently forced romance, I will state only that my low expectations did not match the outcome.

Bonnie Dundee is Special Investigator to the District Attorney and is called in to investigate a murder during a bridge party. After carefully reconstructing the sequence of events, the number of suspects refuses to diminish. Investigation is mixed with coy courting of the office secretary as Dundee navigates the social elite of a small New England town in the 1920s, putting his own life ultimately at risk to solve the crime. The author astutely observes the reality of social class in America at that time, while providing a providing a fairly hard-boiled detective story. All the clues are there for the reader to solve the crime - no vital clues are withheld to the end of the book and while the solution to the crime is ingenious it does not rely on introducing extraordinary details late in the story. This is detective fiction as it should be written. Many wannabe writers today could do worse than learn from it.

Austin provided enough suspense throughout the book to keep you engaged. I also enjoyed the absence of "foul" language in the book. I would definitely recommend this book as a fun summer vacation read.
