To Win Her Favor (A Belle Meade Plantation Novel), by Tamera Alexander

Review "Marriage of convenience stories are my favorite and To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander is no exception. The challenges and dynamics of the unlikely relationship between a southern lady and handsome Irishman sizzle with tension and passion. The plot is as powerful as the magnificent thoroughbreds the heroine rides. A moving story of overcoming post-Civil War obstacles and racial discrimination, readers won't be able to put down the book until the last page."~ Jody Hedlund, bestselling author of Love Unexpected"Tamera Alexander delivers a beautifully-realized novel of love, faith, and redemption. Brimming with rich historical detail and populated with compelling characters both real and imagined, TO WIN HER FAVOR is certain to find favor with Ms. Alexander's' fans and to win her many new ones." ~ Dorothy Love, author of The Bracelet and Carolina Gold "Tamera Alexander is one of my favorite authors, so I expect a lot from her novels. To Win Her Favor is captivating beyond expectation! This novel has everything readers are looking for--rich characterization, page-turning intrigue, a heartwarming romance charged with tension, and more!" ~ Cindy Woodsmall, NYT bestselling author"I have rarely read a more wonderful book than To Win Her Favor by Tamera Alexander. Rich with historical detail and fully developed characters, this novel held me spellbound until the last page. If you read one historical novel this year, make it To Win Her Favor. It will linger with you long after the last page."~ Colleen Coble, USA Today bestselling author of the Hope Beach series "Tamera Alexander has done it again! To Win Her Favor is peopled with fascinating, richly-drawn characters that drew me into their very hearts and souls. Maggie and Cullen's story captures the drama and tragedy of the post-Civil War era, but more importantly, it captures the humanity of those who triumphed after a dark time in our nation's history to rebuild lives marked by joy and anchored by faith."~ Deborah Raney, author of The Face of the Earth and The Chicory Inn Novels series “This wonderful story of God’s love and faithfulness is set against the beauty of the Tennessee hills. Fans of Cathy Marie Hake and Deeanne Gist will enjoy this book.” (CBA Retailers • Resources Magazine)“No insta-love here! Readers get to experience the growing attraction between the headstrong and determined Maggie and the swoon-worthy Cullen. The deeply drawn characters move the story along at a steady pace – even Bucket, the dog, and Bourbon Belle, the mare, will win readers over.” – 4 star review (RT Book Reviews)“Alexander (To Whisper Her Name) continues her ode to the magnificent Belle Meade Plantation, using it to illustrate questions of race, faith, and loyalty that continue to haunt today. Richly drawn secondary characters add depth, humor, and a sobering perspective on how Reconstruction affected racial relations, social status, and economic fortunes. Fans will appreciate, and applaud the smooth merging of social commentary and a sweet love story.” (Publishers Weekly)“Strong characters, a sense of the times, and the themes of love, friendship, and the importance of loyalty and determination make this a triumph.” – starred review (Library Journal)“The quiet undertones of seeking redemption while keeping the faith should easily satisfy Tamera Alexander’s growing fan base.” (Historical Novel Society)

47 of 49 people found the following review helpful. Mixed feelings... By Sara So I should start off by saying that Tamera Alexander's books have been some of my all-time favorites (I particularly like To Whisper Her Name and A Lasting Impression) so I was very eager to read her newest!First of all, the pros:*Her writing is exquisite, as always. The pictures she paints in my mind are so vivid and beautiful...but this is also a con (see below).*The story was very interesting and was full of many likable characters whose fates were all intertwined.*I always like stories about women who were a little "ahead of their time" and how they coped.*There are mentions of other characters of hers from previous books and I always enjoy when a writer makes her own little world of people. Uncle Bob, ohhh I'm happy to meet him again.Cons:*She's great a painting vivid pictures with words...which is why I found some of her romance scenes too much for me. I understand the characters are married when the romance kicks in, but I don't read Christian fiction to be able to picture two people making love in my head. I was a bit shocked at first because I don't recall any of her other books being so explicit. Sure, they had steamy, heart-fluttering moments, but nothing like giving you a play-by-play of all their foreplay. This is one of the reasons I stopped reading Deanne Gist novels (who I loved at the beginning too) but her romance scenes were more than what I like to read. With that being said, this is one book I am not going to keep in the house for my two girls to discover when they hit their teen years! I actually stopped about 2/3 of the way through after the third love scene and just skimmed through to see how it ended. That makes me so sad, because this is Tamera Alexander...*The story did seem to lag in some parts too, and some scenes I could not figure out how they really played into the larger story. The only thing I can figure is that it is a set-up for another Belle Meade novel (thinking the Savannah Darby character?).All that being said, this is not my favorite of hers at all. I'm a bit disappointed. I can't say that I dislike it altogether because I really enjoy reading her writing, but I do hope her future novels are a bit cleaner. I guess that makes me a prude, but hey! that's just my personal preference. If this review is helpful to you in anyway, than I'm glad. If not, please move on to the next =).

By MeezCarrie Tamera Alexander has done it again - spun history, romance, and characters into a story so rich you might be tempted to stick it in a vault for safekeeping. Except read it first. And then don't stick it in a vault because it's just a book and people might think you're crazy. Her perspective on the history of the time period is captivating and vivid, at times shocking in its reality, but ever full of reminders that for all the evil and heartbreak present in mankind at any given moment there are always remnants of God's good to shine in the darkness. The romance swirling around this marriage of convenience is at once breathless for both its joys and its sorrows, and the protagonists are as perfectly matched as a wink and a grin. Even if they themselves would argue that point with me a time or two throughout their journey. To Win Her Favor overflows with characters who are too full of life to be held captive to the pages of a story; they weave their way into your heart by the end of the book and feel like dear friends. To Win Her Favor may be my favorite book yet by Tamera Alexander! Yes, because of all the reasons I already mentioned (history, romance, characters) but all of her books have those elements to perfection. She's such a gifted author that you really can never go wrong with one of her books. What sets To Win Her Favor apart in my opinion is something I'm (happily) starting to see tentatively making its way into the Christian fiction market - reality. The stark truth of what life looked like post-Civil War for blacks and immigrants in the South. The sweet truth of what a marriage can be like when two people love each other, desire each other and love God. In neither of these cases does Ms. Alexander write more than is needed. She tells us just enough about the blatant discrimination and horrific persecution suffered to break our hearts and rile our anger. We see glimpses of Cullen and Maggie as husband and wife but we always zoom away from their bedroom before things get too intimate. Tamera Alexander has redeemed romance from what can be seen explicitly in so many arenas today, and she has done it sweetly and brilliantly - and she has preserved the sanctity of marriage and the purity of our minds in the process.Another reason To Win Her Favor is my favorite book of Tamera Alexander's is the vivid characters! Especially Kizzie! I can just see her with her hand on her tiny hip, all that sass and spirit set loose in a pint-sized bundle of cute. Mr. Linden stole my heart as well, though the capturing took a bit longer than it did with Kizzy. My heart melted that last little bit over Maggie's father right about the time Cullen started reading the handwritten notes in Mr. Linden's Bible. Speaking of Cullen... *dreamy sigh*. That accent. That wink. That flirtatious mischievous side to him. That soft tender side to him. All-in-all, pretty much everything you could possibly want in a romantic hero. And Maggie - I really identified with Maggie. (Except for the horse thing - I've never really developed a fondness for them, despite living in horse country for all of my adult life to date.) She's a daddy's girl with a fiercely determined nature, firm opinions, and a surprisingly sensitive heart. And while those firm opinions can keep her grounded, they can also do more harm than good at times. This is a lesson I have had to learn as well over time - and it's one of the main reasons I identified so strongly with Maggie's character. As Cullen says to her at one point, "...when the world you're born in is all the world you've ever seen, it's hard to see it for what it really is." I echo his next sentiment - "Believe me, I know."I also loved seeing old friends from previous books as they made cameos in this one. Nods like this from the author to her long-time readers make me smile deep in my heart! Speaking of deep-hearted smiles, I am thrilled to learn that one of the characters whose story touched me most in To Win Her Favor (Savannah Darby) will have her own story in a novella included in Among the Fair Magnolias. This collection of Southern love stories written by best-selling historical authors Tamera Alexander, Shelley Gray, Dorothy Love, and Elizabeth Musser is due to be released in July. Finally, To Win Her Favor touched a chord in me because it takes place during a period in American history that isn't pretty, and Ms. Alexander does not hesitate to show the raw reality of life for immigrants and blacks after the Civil War. They were called horrible names, they were beaten, they were driven from their homes, they were refused service - all because of their nationality or the color of their skin. This is particularly close to my heart because of my work with people in my city's international community. Sadly, this kind of treatment toward immigrants still occurs on some levels - and one only has to turn on the news to see that racial unrest is also still alive and well. To Win Her Favor is so timely for our modern lives, despite being written about a period over 100 years in our country's history.I give To Win Her Favor 5 out of 5 stars and a place on my favorites list!Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

15 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Insist on clean reads? Don't buy this book. By Tina Tamera Alexander is one of my favorite authors and I was soooo excited to get this book in my hands! And soooo disappointed with the sexual content of this book. Even with her fabulous writing, great historical description, and wonderful character development, this book gets one star because of the sexuality piece she chose to include. I can not describe how shocked I was when she described Cullen unbuttoning Maggie's shirt and slipping his hand under it. I will never buy another Alexander book without letting others read and review it first to see if it is similar. I had come to fully trust Tamera Alexander's style and I consider her book "A Beauty So Rare" a masterpiece. If you insist on interesting yet very clean reads, I'm sorry to say that this is not in that group. I deeply hope this is the only Alexander book to be so explicit. If she continues in this style, I will stop reading her future books altogether.

Before the opening of the treaty ports in the 1840s, Canton was the only Chinese port where foreign merchants were allowed to trade. The Golden Ghetto takes us into the world of one of this city's most important foreign communities―the Americans―during the decades between the American Revolution of 1776 and the signing of the Sino-US Treaty of Wanghia in 1844. American merchants lived in isolation from Chinese society in sybaritic, albeit usually celibate luxury. Making use of exhaustive research, Downs provides an especially clear explanation of the Canton commercial setting generally and of the role of American merchants. Many of these men made fortunes and returned home to become important figures in the rapidly developing United States. The book devotes particular attention to the biographical details of the principal American traders, the leading American firms, and their operations in Canton and the United States. Opium smuggling receives special emphasis, as does the important topic of early diplomatic relations between the United States and China.Since its first publication in 1997, The Golden Ghetto has been recognized as the leading work on Americans trading at Canton. Long out of print, this new edition makes this key work again available, both to scholars and a wider readership.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Golden Ghetto by Jacques M. Downs By A Customer Many readers--not just history buffs--will find The Golden Ghetto: The American Commercial Community at Canton and the Shaping of American China Policy, 1784-1844 fascinating and enlightening. Jacques M. Downs' comprehensive study of American merchants involved in the China trade during the first sixty years of U.S.-China relations, published in 1997 after a lifetime of exhaustive research, is now the definitive work on this topic. The Golden Ghetto is divided into three sections: (1)an account of the American community at Canton [or Guangzhou] under the restrictive Canton System established by Chinese officialdom to buffer the Central Kingdom from the potential harm of foreign activity and influence; (2) a detailed study of American firms and some 200 merchants involved in the China trade over six decades; and (3) an exploration of the path to the first Sino-American treaty--the 1844 Treaty of Wanghsia [Wangxia] negotiated by lawyer, politician, and diplomat Caleb Cushing after the Opium War (1839-42). Focusing on individual actions and attitudes--which Downs has culled from a wealth of sources including letters, diaries, and company histories--his presentation takes on a personal tone, occasionally reading more like a novel than a work of history. At the heart of his account is American trade in tea and silk, and increasingly in opium in the early 19th century. Downs does not mince words in condemning opium traders regardless of their nationality and the deleterious effects of the opium enterprise, but at the same time he explains how opium trade profits came to form the financial bedrock of the foreign community at Canton. He argues persuasively that American merchants with direct personal experience in China, and to a lesser extent missionaries, had a significant influence on official U.S. China policy. Readers familiar with U.S.-China relations in the 20th and early 21st centuries, and in particular with the proliferation of American business interests in China in the past two decades and with the political implications thereof, will find that Downs' study resonates with contemporary as well as historical relevance.

A Praxis II Test Study Guide Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the Praxis II test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the Praxis II test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game, then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the Praxis II Subject Test is written by our Praxis II test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the Praxis II test. Our original research into the Praxis II: Subject Assessment, offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the Praxis II test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the Praxis II test.

Regardless of which Praxis II test you have to take- you have come to the right place. Here you will find everything you need to know in order to be successful and get your certification.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the Praxis II test. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams.

The Second Reason:

Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the Praxis II test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker.

We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort.

The Third Reason:

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the Praxis II test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the Praxis II test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the Praxis II test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the Praxis II test...

The Exclusive Test Taking Techniques

  • Explains how the Praxis II test time limits are the #1 enemy of most test takers, and what you can do about it- You avoid falling into the many "time traps" built into the test, giving you an immeasurable advantage over those who go into the test unaware
  • Shows you super speed methods to get through the questions you know with ease- Saving you time so you concentrate on the hardest questions without rushing
  • Get quick, customized help for the questions you have- just send us a quick email and we'll get back to you promptly with the answer.
  • Keys to questions that "give away" the wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some of the questions without really even knowing anything about them
  • Details the EXACT STUDY PLAN for the Praxis II test that we believe gives the most results in the least time- No matter if you're studying for a week or a month, you won't waste the precious study time you have on useless activities
  • Our researchers are more than just academic theoreticians who understand the technical nature of standardized tests, but are also experts on test taking itself- they reveal the exact skills and the information you'll need to perform under pressure during the test.
  • A systematic analysis and the best breakdown into "plain language" of how to deconstruct and master complex problems- You turn the problems that most of the test takers will stumble over to your advantage
  • Learn why, when, and how to guess to your advantage. Many test takers use exactly the wrong strategy, but you can avoid the pitfalls with the help of our standardized test experts
  • The secret keys that "gives away" the right answer a lot of the time- You know the special "flags" and the specific "giveaways" to look for
  • Includes instructions detailing the best way for you to get started with your preparation efforts so you can begin the path of improving your scores immediately
  • The most efficient and accurate method for picking the right answer- You won't be scratching your head trying to read the mind of the test question writer, but will instead know exactly what to look for to pick the best answer
  • Our quick problem solving method for difficult problems- You speed right through these notorious time-wasters
  • Courteous, unlimited customer service is 100% free- if you need the product emailed to a different address, lose the product, or have any other difficulty- the help you need is just a short email away and our representatives are active 7 days a week helping customers
  • The research of our team of test experts is 100% independent and original
  • Our exclusive "calibration strategy" to help you never go too fast OR too slow when answering even the toughest questions
  • The 5-step process we've developed, what we call the "phased" approach, concerning the use of the various study aids and practice tests
  • How the problem of procrastination can kill your chance of success, and the most important thing you can do about it
  • How to know when you've studied as much as you need to for the exam- and the reason why we think some people should spend LESS time studying for the test
  • The Top 20 things you should take care of within 24 hours of taking the test- use the list we provide as a checklist to make sure you've taken care of the "little things" in addition to studying hard
  • How to predict the right answer before you see the answer choices- and how to prevent the wrong answers from "polluting" your mind and tempting you into a trap designed by the test writers --
  • Why answers that "sound" correct are often the very ones that are wrong- and how to tell the difference between the right answer and the many clever-sounding traps set for you by the test writers
  • Do you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answer
  • Why "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writers
  • Learn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around them
  • The secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choices
  • The two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughly
  • How to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take you
  • Test writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoid
  • Why "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrong
  • Learn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question right

Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.

Let us explain.

Before we go any further, let us clarify what Praxis II Exam Secrets is not. It is not a stale rehash of all of the things you have already learned in the past.

I purchased the Secrets file, and I just wanted to let you know that I got a 99% on my test. I just want to thank you again, and hope you have continued success in your ventures. Sincerely, Paul L.

My name is Chris. I used the Secrets study guide for five days. The study guide made the test so easy to understand. Like you said this program is worth 100's of dollars. To me 1,000's!! THANKS, Chris G.

I just had to thank you guys for the test prep! I bought the guide as a last minute prep, I mean maybe 5 hours before the test. Like I said, I had ZERO preparation! I was nervous about the test let alone receiving the score I needed. I read the guide through only once before test time and needless to say, the only way I passed was thanks to your refresher!! Brian

Just dropping you a note to let you know that I am completely satisfied with the product. I had already taken the test once and landed in the 75 percentile of those taking it with me. I took the test a second time and used some of your tips and raised my score to the 97 percentile. Thanks for my much improved score. Denise W.

I heard about your website from a friend. I am enrolled in a review course, and in hindsight, I wish I wouldn't have taken my review course and instead spent a fraction of the money on your program. Thank you! Zac L.

You get at least 10 times your money's worth! --When you consider what's at stake with the exam, we believe the value of our study guide gives you at least ten times your money's worth.

Murder At Bridge (Detective Classics), by Anne Austin

About the Author Born in 1895, Anne Austin began by writing romance novels about young women in the mid 1920's but soon turned her talents to producing a string of mysteries through the 1930's, some of which appeared as serials in newspapers.. Many of these mysteries feature as the detective “Bonnie” Dundee, Special Investigator for the District Attorney, including Murder Backstairs, The Avenging Parrot, Murder at Bridge, and One Drop of Blood. Several of her mysteries were translated into French, including Le Pigeon Noir and Le Crime Parfume. Despite her success as a novelist, Anne Austin disappears from the public record after the 1930's.

30 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Why being dummy at bridge can be dangerous By P. Mann "Murder at Bridge" begins as an apparent parlor mystery when former Broadway dancer Juanita Selim is shot during a society bridge party. Selim, an apparent outsider, is the host of the party and leaves during the last hand when she is dummy (the member of the bidding party who turns her hand down and does not need to be there to play the hand) and goes to her bedroom to make herself "pretty-pretty" for the men who are in the process of arriving for the post-bridge cocktail party. Looking "pretty-pretty" seems to be Selim's general aim in life as she apparently has won if not the hearts, at least the eyes of most of the society men.The trajectory of the bullet may indicate that the shooter stood outside the bedroom window, but the district attorney's new special investigator, Bonnie Dundee, believes the shooter probably stood inside the window. This idea does not sit well with homicide Captain Strawn, who seems to prefer the idea of an outsider to that of one of Hamilton County's elite. What begins as an apparent parlor mystery (complete with an entire chapter devoted to the playing of the "death hand"--those not familiar with bridge will probably find this part dull or even incomprehensible) soon turns into a cross between an almost-locked-room mystery and a modest police procedural. Unless the captain is right, the killer has performed an impressive act of hiding the murder weapon and avoiding detection. Dundee, for his part, is trying to understand the victim's past and her relationship to the society members with whom she seems an ill fit."Murder at Bridge" at first seems like a dry mystery, a combination of a reasonably puzzling mystery with stereotyped characters and a forced romance. However, the last two-thirds of the book prove more complex as the characters, especially the victim, are fleshed out. The novel gains depth and becomes far more enjoyable. As for the apparently forced romance, I will state only that my low expectations did not match the outcome.

Bonnie Dundee is Special Investigator to the District Attorney and is called in to investigate a murder during a bridge party. After carefully reconstructing the sequence of events, the number of suspects refuses to diminish. Investigation is mixed with coy courting of the office secretary as Dundee navigates the social elite of a small New England town in the 1920s, putting his own life ultimately at risk to solve the crime. The author astutely observes the reality of social class in America at that time, while providing a providing a fairly hard-boiled detective story. All the clues are there for the reader to solve the crime - no vital clues are withheld to the end of the book and while the solution to the crime is ingenious it does not rely on introducing extraordinary details late in the story. This is detective fiction as it should be written. Many wannabe writers today could do worse than learn from it.

Austin provided enough suspense throughout the book to keep you engaged. I also enjoyed the absence of "foul" language in the book. I would definitely recommend this book as a fun summer vacation read.

At dusk on December 8, 1941, the carrier Enterprise and her escort of cruisers and destroyers entered Pearl Harbor. Officers and men lined the rails, watching in stunned silence. The twisted, smoldering superstructure of the Arizona was still aflame, and there was a stench of charred wood and fuel oil in the air. "Morale went to nothing just about then," said an officer on one of the escorting cruisers. "We were sick and shocked. We couldn't believe that this had happened to us." Through the night, the crew of the Enterprise, under the command of Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, took on fuel, provisions, and ammunition. Before dawn it was back at sea. The Enterprise was just one of the carriers that won the war in the Pacific. Here is the extraordinary story of the men and ships that turned the tide of the war.

Rue A concise review of the carrier's decisive role in replacing the battleship as the deciding factor in naval warfare during the Pacific war. Ultimately, the U.S. got and exploited the technological, industrial, and human edge that enabled it to reduce the most powerful navy in the world in 1941 to an empty shell by 1945. By war's end, Japan had few carriers, fewer planes, and very few replacement pilots to fly those planes. This outcome was by design, not by accident.

By Douglas Fugate Mr. Sears has provided a comprehensive, easy-to-read account of the aircraft carrier and its use by both Japan and the United States in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. His many personal accounts make the story an exciting history to read. While Mr. Sears mentions all of the important (as well as less known) land battles, this book concentrates on the Navy version and specifically the sailors and pilots assigned or attached to naval vessels.I highly recommend this book to adults and high school or college students.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. solid work By Kindle Customer Classic work from renowned historian. Nothing shocking or unexpected for the serious student of modern naval history but gives the reader a solid foundation on the war in the Pacific. While the carrier war of 1941-1945 was only 30 years from the cloth and wood early planes of WWI and some 40 years from Kittyhawk the principles of air power projection developed 70 years ago is still the basis of USN operations today.

245 Pages / 500 Illustrations During the 75 years that have now passed since the end of the grand history-altering event known as World War II, only a single narrative of the great conflict has been heard. It is a story which the architects of the New World Order have implanted, no, POUNDED into the minds of three subsequent generations. Every medium of mass indoctrination has been harnessed to the task of training the obedient masses as to what the proper view of this event should be. Academia, news media, public education, book publishing, TV documentaries, Hollywood films, clergymen and politicians of every stripe all sing the same song. You know the familiar lyrics: “Led by Adolf Hitler; Germany, Italy and Japan tried to enslave the planet. The “good guys” of the “world community”, led by Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) and Winston Churchill, banded together and stopped them. Literally, not a day seems to pass without some sort of media reference to this incomplete and simplistic narrative; a story which oh-so-conveniently ignores the previous decades of critical history leading up to World War II, omits vital information from the actual war years, and outright fabricates lie after lie after lie. Indeed, the “official story” amounts to a manufactured mendacity of such mountainous dimensions that the human mind will have a hard time processing the actual truth of the grand event, no matter how compelling the case may be. Isn’t it time you heard a different tune; at least for your consideration? Haven't you ever at least been curious as to what "the other side of the World War II story" was? If so, you ought to have a look at 'The Bad War', a heavily illustrated epic timeline that will transport you back to the mid 1800's; and then lead you on an exciting "you are there" journey right up through both World War I and World War II. Well-written, entertaining, and meticulously documented, 'The Bad War' is unique for its ability to condense so much real history into just 245 attention-riveting, illustration-rich pages. But do be forewarned. Your worldview may never be the same.

I was totally overwhelmed when I first read The Bad War in PDF-format By The Truth Must Out I was totally overwhelmed when I first read The Bad War in PDF-format. My immediate thought was that this is so easy to understand so I must send it to all my friends that I think need to know the truth about what happened. I could not do it without a book. To my great joy The Bad War was due to come out in print and even better in this extended version which covers even more areas of importance. I cannot state enough how impressed I am about the validity of facts and attention to detail this book has but still so easy to read. This is a book with 300 short and informative texts accompanied by illustrative pictures to each text. It covers all the phases starting from 1848 when 50 or so controlled small “revolutions” wreak havoc in Europe, causing thousands of innocent deaths and ends with the Nuremberg trials with its predetermined orchestrated outcome that has nothing to do with a real “trial” but rather to put blame on the side that lost the war.I have read many books on the World Wars but no one with this unique concept. I cannot other than give this book the highest of my recommendations.

"A definitive tome for both Who fans and newcomers alike" - Q Magazine

Pete Townshend was once asked how he prepared himself for The Who's violent live performances. His answer? 'Pretend you're in a war.' For a band as prone to furious infighting as it was notorious for acts of 'auto-destructive art' this could have served as a motto.

Between 1964 and 1969 The Who released some of the most dramatic and confrontational music of the decade, including 'I Can't Explain', 'My Generation' and 'I Can See For Miles'. This was a body of work driven by bitter rivalry, black humour and dark childhood secrets, but it also held up a mirror to a society in transition. Now, acclaimed rock biographer Mark Blake goes in search of its inspiration to present a unique perspective on both The Who and the sixties.

From their breakthrough as Mod figureheads to the rise and fall of psychedelia, he reveals how The Who, in their explorations of sex, drugs, spirituality and class, refracted the growing turbulence of the time. He also lays bare the colourful but crucial role played by their managers, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. And - in the uneasy alliance between art-school experimentation and working-class ambition - he locates the motor of the Swinging Sixties.

As the decade closed, with The Who performing Tommy in front of 500,000 people at the Woodstock Festival, the 'rock opera' was born. In retrospect, it was the crowning achievement of a band who had already embraced pop art and the concept album; who had pioneered the power chord and the guitar smash; and who had embodied - more so than any of their peers - the guiding spirit of the age: war.

Pete Townshend on how he prepares for a Who concert. With all the books about The Who and late '60s rock music/bands/musicians, this book, by Mark Blake, is actually one of the better reads if you want to know what things were like for and around The Who in their formative/early years. Beginning with a Who gig at the Marquee in Soho with Daltrey taking a shotgun away from a gunman bent on revenge, the band then went on to totally destroy their instruments with little regard for the patrons or themselves. And so begins this look at not only The Who, but the Mod period and the sixties era in general. From their first gigs as The Detours to The High Numbers, to possible new names like The Hair, The No One, The Hair and The Who (which the band decided sounded "too much like a pub."), to their final name (which everyone in the band laughed at), the first days of the band are recounted with snippets of recent interviews from people who were there."Every time I smashed a guitar I saw my grandmother's face." Pete Townshend."The Who won't last that long." Pete Townshend. From the band's early days as "leaders" of the Mod movement, into the psychedelic years of the '60s, this is a good, interesting look at that whole period. And while other books have covered this period in England, Blake has done extensive research into all things connected with The Who during this period which give his book a distinct leg up on his subjects. Not only the band but their managers are looked at in detail to help tell the story of working class-art school members of the band and their uneasy relationship with both Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp. That the band and their management didn't see eye to eye is well known to fans, but the author has delved deeper into both manager's lives to form a good picture of why neither men got along with the band. That portion of the book is well worth reading because it helps form a much better picture of the relationship between the band and their managers."All great art is crap." Kit Lambert."I was a horrible little sod." Roger Daltrey."We wanted The Who to be like Miles Davis meets Johnny Kidd and the Pirates." An early Who manifesto by Richard Barnes and Pete Townshend. The early days before the band came together helps set the scene and shines some light on why the band members never seemed to truly come together as a band--they were always prone to fighting amongst themselves. Plus the music just before rock 'n' roll--"trad jazz" and skiffle--is looked at in some depth, with that music helping to lay the foundation for the band's eventual formation. Daltrey (for example) tried (unsuccessfully) to play guitar in an early skiffle band ("Basically he couldn't play."), while 12 year old Pete Townshend began to play the guitar (" a cheap guitar of the kind you'd see hanging on the wall of a Spanish restaurant"), and met John Entwistle. But as Townshend said, "The Who are four people who shouldn't be in a band together". And so it goes."The Who didn't really do peace and love." Roger Daltrey."I felt as if a bomb had gone off in my head...I had to find something to fill the empty space." Pete Townshend. The book goes on to describe the songs, the singles, the albums, the concerts, the drugs, the spiritual quests, and the many people in the band's orbit during the "swinging sixties". For anyone who wants a good inside look at The Who and that entire era, the author has done his homework in laying out in an easy to read and digest manner most everything of interest connected to the band during these early and exciting (and arguably best) years of the band's career. There's 16 pages of b&w photos from different periods that help tell the story--many of them rarely seen before. All in all this is well worth adding to your music shelf if you're either/and a fan of The Who in the '60s/the sixties music scene in Britain."I could point that guitar at my dad and say, 'Bang! You're dead!'". Pete Towhshend on discovering the guitar.

In-depth review of a welcome study on the Who's birth and growth By John L Murphy While Mods and The Who inevitably join together in many fans' minds, the band's ties to modernism, in art and culture, have not received the in-depth attention they deserve. To address these contexts, Mark Blake incorporates many years of interviews with Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Roger Daltrey, adding material gleaned from multimedia and previous books on the band. As an editor at Qand Mojo magazines, and a biographer of Queen and Pink Floyd, Blake fits in comfortably with rock journalism. He presents in Pretend You're in a War a solid study of the band's birth and growth during the 1960s.While this narrative momentum is thwarted by the tendency of Townshend to tell one story to one journalist and another to another scribe a few years later, and further complicated by the reticence of Entwistle, the demise of Keith Moon and the determination of Daltrey to get his side of the record straight (all four sometimes seem at odds with other bandmates and witnesses), the members invigorate Blake's account. They were a fractious four who insisted on autonomy even as they combined their talents to make rousing music. Blake offers a readable and accessible consideration of the band's origins, its tensions early on and its struggles as fame took over.Blake treats the emergence of the band, their early musical ambitions and their early members, especially drummer Doug Sandow, who was edged out before Moon was recruited. The detail here surpasses other treatments I have read, so those less obsessed by history may find the research too meticulous. Fans may argue for its necessity; it exposes The Who's deep London roots.Townshend's tutelage at Ealing Art School under Gustav Metzger, known for action painting, and Roy Ascott, known for cybermetrics and confrontation, earns welcome inclusion; I wish more had been given over to these impacts on the guitarist's formative years. Townshend embraced a liberating lifestyle along with the music. He plunged into London's swirl of art, books, and films as part of this cultural upheaval. Again, his prescient immersion into home taping and mechanical recording techniques is astonishing, and deserved more depth here; Townshend mastered intricacies of production rapidly.Despite some production oversight being left to the band's managers, the spirited pair of East End-bred Chris Stamp and Oxbridge-tutored scion and heir to a classical music pedigree, Kit Lambert, Townshend took much of the band's control away from Daltrey. Relegated to the mike, as his confidence grew, Daltrey became a powerful, more nuanced vocalist. This took years, as his wish to guide the band competed against Townshend's technical skills and formidable ego. But Daltrey by decade's end channeled Townshend's lyrical gifts and vulnerable sensibility into his own cocky, strutting and preening presence. The book's title comes from Townshend's attitude when the band, held up as Mod models, took the stage. While their managers contended, while the guitarist and singer bickered and fought for leadership, so the stoic bassist Entwistle and the manic drummer Moon sought their share of the Who's spotlight. The band ascended quickly into the top ranks, but preceded by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, The Who had to catch up to talented peers and rivals. The Kinks especially competed with The Who sonically and lyrically from the mid-1960s on, and Blake documents this contest well. The mythic Mod connection was pushed more by management and media, as Townshend longed to speak to his fans from that cohort, but the Mods themselves never lasted very long. "'A powerful, aggressive little army' with its mysterious dress code, music, dances and semiotics" sums up for Blake the unity of The Who and Mods. Yet equally crucial were the art school lessons Townshend learned from modernism.Mentors such as Ascott, Metzger and Helmut Gorden (the most eccentric of many contenders) merit mention, and Blake notes their suggestions to an eager student. Townshend merged pop art into the classical tastes of Lambert. He integrated Henry Purcell and music-hall into three-minute ditties, often singles, which conveyed in Blake's phrasing "black humour and sexual perversion" as "cameos, essays of human experience."The "visual gimmick" accidentally invented at Harrow's Railway Hotel (Blake evokes its shabby ambiance well) when Townshend smashed his guitar led to a routine. Moon destroyed his kit, Daltrey lassoed his microphone, Entwistle stood stock still on the side. Townshend loved and hated this. His frustration at rock-star poses led to his own changes, in his lyrics, his music, and then his attire. He chose before decade's end his workmanlike white boiler suit and Doc Martens as onstage fashion, contrasting with his three colorful bandmates.Moon, under Lambert's sway, found pills, expensive champagne and excess inviting. Entwistle succumbed to drink and drugs, if in a quiet, self-critical manner. His musical talents shone in the band, but not enough compared to the main songwriter. Entwistle longed for his ideas to be accepted more by the band, which under Townshend's dominance roused Daltrey's understandable resistance. Unlike The Beatles circa 1966, one senses The Who did not close ranks out of friendship so much as necessity, when songs had to be constructed and tours had to be endured, to pay the bills that the lavish lifestyles of the band required. Blake leaps from the band members getting by in flats or living with their parents to mansions, driving luxury autos (more than one meeting a quick demise) and indulging in conspicuous consumption with barely any transition. Perhaps the band's entry into the upper ranks of British rock happened that fast. What wearied The Who, barely into their career, was the pace they had to keep to stay on the charts, on tour and in the studio. 1965-1966 as recounted here resembles the last stages of The Beatles. At least, unlike that foursome or the Stones, the machinations of Allen Klein to take over The Who's finances were fended off by Lambert, Stamp and Townshend. Yet, the band by the close of 1966 lacked continuity or consistency in their releases; the experimentation of Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Pink Floyd signaled an era far from Mods vs. Rockers. Townshend's "story-songs" struggled at times to chart.By then, the drug culture which consumed the Mods had soured for the lead songwriter. He distanced himself from the scene, even as he loved spending money and acting out his artistic ambitions. This bifurcation helped his music, however. The guitarist's decision to turn to Meher Baba is well-known, but it did, as Blake shows, ease Townshend's egotistical compulsion. He appreciated the awareness of the damage done by his insistence on pushing limits and refusing to listen to the wisdom of his comrades. That drive enabled Townshend to rise above his peers and to reign as a young eminence, but it also aroused his disgust with the contradictions a rock celebrity's career represented, if that star spoke for pure intentions.Meanwhile, the bassist connived, sometimes with a drummer bent on hotel-room smashing, while the singer gave up Dippity-Do. Daltrey groomed a leonine mane atop his buckskin vest and rugged, tanned physique. Among a homely band, he stood out. Despite or due to his short stature, he grew into the role that Townshend and he had worked out, as the confident voice for the guitarist's torments and triumphs.Blake regales readers with many familiar stories. Townshend's versions, whether set down in his 2012 autobiography or as venerable, conversational anecdotes, can differ with each other as well as with bandmates. Daltrey gets his own words in, with similar contradictions now and then. The truth of Moon's legendary Holiday Inn debacle in Flint, Michigan, or what song Jimmy Page did or did not play on, may never be known, but it is fun following the narratives as these moments enter rock star lore. Blake strives to keep straight who said what to whom and when. This accuracy enhances this book's value. (A recommended archive, although it may have appeared too late in 2014 for consultation, is not cited: Mike Segretto's The Who FAQ [see my review]. Otherwise, Blake blends smoothly many standard sources on the band into his presentation.)The albums themselves gain short shrift; track-by-track commentary is not Blake's intent. He emphasizes the band's nature more than their recordings, although Lambert's suggestions get due credit, as does the input of Daltrey, Entwistle and Moon to what seems soon after the start Townshend's band. Blake depicts vivid scenes: touring with Herman's Hermits, sparring at Monterey with Jimi Hendrix, making money from and losing even more for Track Records. The "financial profligacy" of the Who grew as troubled, feckless Lambert gave in to the addictions which would eventually consume first the drummer and much later the bassist. This hedonism met with the singer's disdain and the guitarist's ambivalence. Amidst hippie excess, Townshend "felt like a workman in a lunatic asylum, come to fix the plumbing." But both Townshend and Daltrey celebrated the onstage energy of the band, which reached its peak, in the studio and in concert, as ornamented productions on {Tommy} warped into massive assaults, performed live.Even muddy Woodstock worked, despite three-quarters of the band accidentally on acid. Shunted aside to open their set at 4 a.m., luck came their way. They started "See Me, Feel Me" as dawn broke.Blake ducks out as the story gets good, for the decade ended before the band sustained or perhaps surpassed its 1969-1970 breakthroughs in albums and on tours. Blake provides a brief coda summing up the next decade, but one closes this narrative hoping for the author to return, and to follow this with a complete look at the next seven or eight years. The book ends in 1970, not 1969. But as many claim along with the author, "The Sixties" did not begin until nearly mid-decade. That counterculture period of creativity and chaos ended nearly ten years after The Who as we know them assembled, to make their unsteady climb to near or at the top of British rock. There, they won their war, amid very strong competition, during what remain the best years of that music, and arguably much more in art and culture, as this book demonstrates.

He provides the answersand offers a lot of fascinating insights with it. Don't expect a story of band, but if you are interested in what made them tick, this book delivers.
