When a man offers 1940s private investigator Maggie Sullivan twice her usual fee to look into a "possible" jewelry theft from his hotel safe, she’s skeptical — until a maid’s body tumbles out of a trash can and a jeweler known for high quality fakes is murdered. Does a hotel guest who vanished without a trace hold a piece of the puzzle? Or does it have to do with the Polish count and his family fleeing the start of WW2 in Europe? Could the cops be right that it’s all a trick devised by her client? More at ease in Dayton, Ohio’s, streets and alleyways than in the posh Hotel Canterbury, and chafing under the need to hide her true occupation, Maggie threads her way through an unfamiliar array of suspects: Celluloid luminaries in town for a hush-hush project; an international Lothario whose shady local past she unearths; the count’s embittered valet. Meanwhile, preparations for a visit by FDR preoccupy the city’s police. The Irish cop who long has wooed Maggie suddenly departs for Chicago. Alone and bruised, Maggie faces adversaries whose motives stun her... and a killer who will stop at nothing. A dash of humor leavens this historical mystery series with its early 20th century hard-boiled atmosphere and a flinty detective who wields her Smith & Wesson as skillfully as her emery board. Previous Maggie Sullivan mysteries are No Game for a Dame, Tough Cookie, Don’t Dare a Dame, and two short stories.

I love the setting because I know historically what's going to happen with the US getting involved in WWII. It hasn't happened in the series yet but you can sense it coming. Myers is a very good historian who has brought the time my parents lived through to life.

They are interesting stories, set solidly in their time period (the not-yet-involved American view of the Nazis and the War in Europe, in this one), with a believable and competent heroine. She's observant and bright, and good at her job, and has interesting friends.I think what I like best about the books is the solid sense of "place". Meyers really makes you feel as if you're in that city and time period. The books aren't flashy, nor are the characters; they're "just" a very good read, perfect for a cold winter's day beside a warm fire with a couple fingers of good scotch.

Dayton Deserves Justice, and Maggie Delivers By Ian Miller Maggie Sullivan, slowly building her life up again after her father's death, strides through life again in this fourth installment of the fine hardboiled detective series. Her trademark first person narrative maintains the strength that always characterizes her, and her intelligence permeates her search for justice in a city struggling to recover from the Big Crash of 1929. This time, her clients are flashy, tiny, noisy, but perhaps sweet hotel owner Joshua Tucker and his towering, lovely former dancer wife Frances, who are concerned by fishy business surrounding their exclusive hotel's jewelry safe. With her trademark sympathy, smarts, and sass, Maggie tracks down the truth in this excellent addition to the series. Though Maggie's established cast is less prominent this time out, their relationships to our dashing daredoll still make a solid emotional impact.
