James Dean's love affair with actress Pier Angeli. Poignant, true-to-heart, conceptually in the actor's own words. Why does TED BERNAL GUEVARA keep putting out these James Dean conceptual novels? In plain truth, Guevara says, “He’s like a kid I went to class with, rode the bus with and slid down an awesome snow-packed hill with.” And after high school, he goes on to Hollywood fame and immortality while Guevara from his modest bookish world is left to wonder about the iconic image, giving it a poignant voice sixty years later. Guevara grew up in Marion, Indiana, where the actor was born. In 1954, Dean meets perhaps the one real romance of his brief stellar life. Italian actress Pier Angeli is barely 22 when her movie The Silver Chalice coincided with Dean’s East of Eden at Warner Brothers. She’d sneak over to watch him perform, and he would do the same. When they finally interact, Pier’s mother disapproves of Dean’s behavior, attire and not being Catholic. Some say it was all for the limelight and publicity. Guevara’s gripping, frank story, LIPS OF A MASTODON, vies otherwise, excavating the actor’s true passion for the quaint Ms. Angeli. Guevara is also the author of True Feel, A Circle with Two Corners, and Days of Slint, the first James Dean conceptual novel.

From the Author I wish to thank RumbleLit Press for chiming in "the voice of James Dean" on their Book Giveaway of my upcoming novel, LIPS OF A MASTODON. In retrospect, it took me two and a half years to acquire such level--if I had so acquired it. No matter what, my attempt to imitate is just that, an attempt. I based everything--eloquence, momentum, fluency, texture, a little Indiana boy twang--on the Gig Young interview, which lasted under three minutes. From there, I branched out, using that commanding articulation he had, to express a gritty, true-to-heart narrative. At times, I dipped down to the twang, so much so that the first proofreader grew concerned that there were too many "ain't's." I respected her advice and toned it down in that department. RumbleLit Press has it right in "the voice of James Dean." In my book, Jimmie is talking, not writing. TBG, August 1, 2015
From the Back Cover Why does Ted Bernal Guevara keep putting out these James Dean conceptual novels? In plain truth, Guevara says, "From his upbringing, he's like a kid (James Dean) I went to class with, rode the bus with and slid down an awesome snow-packed hill with." After high school, he goes on to Hollywood fame and immortality, while Guevara from his modest bookish world is left to wonder about the iconic image, heartily giving it a stark, poignant voice sixty years later--after the car crash that ended a talent of preeminence. Guevara grew up in Marion, Indiana, where the actor was born. In 1954, Dean met perhaps the one real romance of his brief life. Italian actress Pier Angeli was barely 22 when her movie The Silver Chalice coincided with Dean's East of Eden at Warner Brothers. She'd sneak over to watch him perform, and he would do the same. When they finally interacted, Pier's mother disapproved, of Dean's behavior, attire and not being Catholic. Some say it was all for the limelight and publicity. Guevara's gripping and frank story, LIPS OF A MASTODON, vies otherwise, excavating the actor's true passion for the beautiful but quaint Ms. Angeli.
About the Author Ted Bernal Guevara is also the author of True Feel, A Circle with Two Corners, and Days of Slint, the first James Dean conceptual novel. Passion for poetry led to volumes, Films, and more recently, Birds on Elephant.

From the first-person pseudo-transfiguration the author has adopted, to the deepening love story between James Dean and actress Pier Angeli, I was hooked. Flawless interweaving to make a true occurrence into a novel. I was drawn in by Dean’s often casual lingo (so real at times one would think the actor had written the book). I was also intrigued by famous celebs in the plot, who are candid, in their daily selves, making them compelling characters. The book got me excited Hollywood again, at the same time, Nostalgia.

It may have been accurate, but I want him to be a good guy. Always. But two years ago I decided that whatever this author writes I will read it. That happened when I read True Feel. I thought, "Anyone who can make me sympathize for a murdering intellect can very well do magic. I’ll read whatever Ted Bernal Guevara writes, even his grocery list."But let’s get back to this James Dean novel. Incredibly“personable,” if the actor wrote it. But James Deandidn’t. Ted did, and that makes it faux pa incredible? The dialog is dead-on, and the characters are real, even if they’re actual famous celebs. They are flawed, uncanny and broken, and get this, they're talented peeps unaware of their destiny as of yet, which makes me appreciate the idea even more. Nothing is hard to stomach here, but Guevara extends from the backside of the characters and makes them brighter than they were. Also, he picks Raymond Massey as his honcho for all time, creationism and evolution. I won't go further on this so as not to spoil it for you. This book shows the truth, and doesn't sugar coat it. Lips of a Mastodon is no romance fluff. The subject matter throughout the story is heavy. Guevara weighed on a life near torture and made us feel it even more.I didn't expect to relate to actress Pier Angeli, but I did, and it brought me to a greater understanding of her position. Definitely worth the read.
