The narrator of this story, a ten year old niece, Aurora Gloria Luceti, witnessed, during two short months in 1943: one stabbing, one severe beating, one suicide, two shootings, four hospital stays, two redemptions, and a multitude of celebrations, because celebrating life was Nettie's way. Nettie, the Italian immigrant goddess of her eclectic, deteriorating neighborhood, was the glue that kept many, disjointed elements together. Her beautiful backyard, the product of her own creativity and design, was a bulwark against the seedy, the rundown, and overgrown. She healed neighborhood animals, and created a Heaven out of various degrees of hell. She managed all of this during World War II, when the world was on fire. Where, not long ago, Detroit experienced punishing joblessness, now 30% of all war material was manufactured in Detroit, the Arsenal of Democracy, as President Roosevelt called our city, leaving factories looking for workers. Hires from the South, both black and white, flooded Detroit, eager for work. People, who never worked side by side, were required to do just that, and they didn't favor the idea. Tensions had been building since the beginning of the War until now, June 1943: The Detroit Race Riot.

Ms. DeSio is very creative in her writing and it’s easy for the reader to get caught up in the story right from the beginning. Aunt Nettie's Backyard is a touching story filled with chaos, goodwill, perseverance, sorrow and joy. A story that all women can identify with, that brings hope and courage to everyday life. Excellent book!

Prather Aunt Nettie's BackyardDelores DeSioIn Aunt Nettie's Backyard, Delores DeSio shows how a single person and place can provide a sanctuary from the woes of the world. Set in Detroit in 1943, the world is quite literally being torn apart between World War II and the awful Race Riots. Told as a series of flashbacks from a niece of the title character, DeSio manages to capture quite well the nuances of the era and the subtleties of the city of Detroit. The author peppers her work with characters, dialect and enough local flavor to keep readers intrigued. Although a work of fiction, the details ring ever so true and provide a realistic view, so much so that the reader will feel immersed in the action. In the character of Aunt Netti, DeSio has carefully crafter the older female relative we should all be blessed to grow up with in our lives. A reader would be hard-pressed to dislike Nettie. DeSio's style is a mix of realism, strong character voice and attention to detail with just the right does of mystery to keep readers of a wide variety of ages intrigued to the last page, which will arrive far too soon.

Aunt Nettie is a strong, take charge, charming main character. I love the colorful and descriptive word brush the author uses to paint vivid pictures of Aunt Nettie's garden and all the neighborhood characters that stream in and out of her backyard, including the four legged type. Her backyard garden becomes a haven of peace, a healing sanctuary, a stronghold for friendship and an escape from the tension and fear building up and leading to the Detroit race riots of 1943. World War ll was a distant rumble compared to the war that was taking place in Aunt Nettie's own neighborhood.This is a"love to pick up", and "hate to put down" book.
