Lipstick Brigade tells the dynamic, inspiring—and until now, untold—story of Washington’s World War II “Government Girls,” recruited from every corner of the nation to staff the offices of America’s central command post. Sometimes called white-collar Rosie the Riveters, this clerical corps over 100,000 strong became federal stenographers, typists, code breakers, analysts, and spies. Filled with firsthand accounts and extensive primary research, Lipstick Brigade brings World War II-era Washington to life. Despite its romanticized image, the nation’s wartime capital was gritty, carnal, frustrating, and sometimes deadly. From Sister Carrie to Carrie Bradshaw, the adventures of young, single women working in the big city have captured the public’s imagination. Lipstick Brigade explores the captivating, surprising, and often moving stories of how these real-life adventurers confronted the challenges of war and transformed the usually sedate capital into a rollicking boomtown.

Inspiring story of courageous American women in World War II Washington By RichardBlaine I consider myself a World War II history buff and fairly well read on the subject. My personal World War II library numbers at least 100 volumes. But until I saw and read this terrific book by Dr. Cindy Gueli, I had no idea that thousands of American women had travelled from all over the country to Washington D.C. to answer their country's call. I was also completely unaware of the deep impact these young, single, sometimes naive but always dutiful and patriotic "Government Girls" had on our nation's capital, which had been a rather sleepy southern city before the war, but was transformed by their presence into a cacaphonous, thriving boomtown.Everyone has heard of "Rosie the Riveter," but few today apparently remember what the New York Times called "The Lipstick Brigade" -- the vertiable army of women who filled the government's wartime need for thousands of clerks, stenographers, decoders, typists and spies. Yet, as Dr. Gueli informs us, these so-called "Government Girls" were legendary in their own time. The presence of thousands of young, single women in DC was heavily commented on in the press and in the Washingotn corridors of power. Alternatively the objects of concern (for their welfare in the big city) and ridicule (for their alleged unruly and promiscuous behavior), Government Girls were the subject of extensive media coverage, government studies and even major Hollywood movies starring such notables as Olivia de Haviland. Wonder Woman's aler ego, Diana Prince, was a Government Girl, working as a WAVE secretary in the War Department by day and using her amazon powers to fight criminals and the Axis powers at night. The modern movie "Saving Private Ryan" shows Government Girls at work typing endless condolence letters to the fmailies of dead GIs until one of them notices she has typed the same name (Ryan) three times and sets the story in motion by notifying her superiors. And Government Girls in World War II Washington courageously faced horrible conditions to discharge their duties, including housing shortages, food shorages, insufficent wages to live in the city, sexual harassment, racism and even rape and murder. There was a serial killer on the loose in World War II Washington, who killed at least one Government Girl, something I had never heard in all my reading about World War II America.Dr. Gueli addresses a significant hole in World War II scholarship with "Lipstick Brigade: The Untold True Story of Washington's World War II Government Girls." Thoroughly researched, fully substantiated and elegantly written, "Lipstick Brigade" opens a lively window on a forgotten but very important aspect of our Nation's history. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II, Washington D.C. and the history of women in the workplace.UPDATE: The Washington Post featured the book, Government Girls and Dr. Gueli in the Metro Section today (September 9, 2015). The stories and the women in this book have experienced such interesting and inspiring lives captured by the talents of the author. Kudos Dr. Gueli, for the extensive and thorough research you did in personally speaking with these very mature ladies and in capturing their youthful experiences during very extraordinary times in our history. History is well documented during the 1940's war years but these wonderful stories of women of that era could have so easily been lost forever. My opinion is that LIPSTICK BRIGADE is a first-hand history of the evolution and strength of American women throughout history, through wartime challenges, and over the many subsequent decades. Fabulous Read....Thank You, Dr. Cindy Gueli!

The Untold Story of Government Girls By Ellen Herbert, author of THE LAST GOVERNMENT GIRL Who doesn't love the story of a young woman who comes to the big city in search of a new life? The big city here is Washington, DC, a city at war, which comes alive in THE LIPSTICK BRIGADE.The author blends the voices of many government girls into a fascinating and realistic portrait of the home front and the young women, who converged on Washington to help win the war. Their war, while not fought with bullets or bombs, was dangerous as they navigated the city, the bureaucracy, and the men they met. All aspects of their lives are covered from the terrible housing shortage to the monotony of some of the government jobs. I especially appreciated the author's insight and humor. How I laughed at this newspaper headline: "Newcomers Discover Private Baths Went Out With Hitler."No study of WWII would be complete without reading THE LIPSTICK BRIGADE
