About the Author Blayne Cooper

Blayne Cooper is the author or co-author of a variety of fiction ranging from mystery/romance to outrageous parody. While she enjoys the challenge of working in multiple genres, it's writing about the humor found in everyday life that gives her the most pleasure.

Adulthood and remission coincided, and TN, as her friends call her, pursued two careers – first managing major conventions and events in the Columbus Ohio area and then going back to school to become a police officer. Unfortunately, her cancer re-emerged and one day, while undergoing treatment, her friends brought her a computer. At the same time, she became addicted to a new television show – Xena, Warrior Princess. The whole world of fan fiction opened up, and a supportive global community came to recognize her as a real talent.

TN quickly found her own voice, writing original stories and novels. Her quality work, realistic characters, and sense of humor all combine to create quirky, charming, compelling stories. Her works have made both the Open Book and the Lambda Literary Society bestseller lists.

Spiller If it weren't for Amazon.com and a customer's list of recommended books, I never would have known this novel existed. Blayne Cooper and T. Novan have written one of the most interesting, touching and, at times, utterly hilarious stories I have read in a very long time. It's the story of Lauren Strayer, a reluctant biograper and Devlyn Marlowe, the first female and openly gay President of the United States.The story follows the ever developing relationship between the two women and takes place during the first year of Marlowe's term in office. There is a great cast of supporting characters, ranging from the loyal best friend and Chief of Staff, to an intrepid assistant and one very ugly, yet lovable pug named Gremlin. You will find yourself alternating between empathy and outright laughter as you read through the sometimes outrageous exploits of the characters.One measure of a good novel is the ability of the author(s) to get the reader to care about the characters within the pages of a book. Blayne Cooper and T. Novan have done a fantastic job of accomplishing just that. So much so, that this was one novel that I was unable and unwilling to put down. The only drawback was that it was not available in a hardcover edition. If it had been, it would have rated much higher than a 5.

Lake "I had the good fortune of receiving an advance copy of MADAM PRESIDENT, and I read it from cover to cover until the wee hours of the morning. It was one of those experiences where I sat for a lot of the time with a goofy grin on my face, and my partner kept asking what was so funny! I just couldn't help it--the story and the characters were entirely engaging!Devlyn Marlowe, the first lesbian in the White House, and Lauren Strayer, biographer extraordinaire, are on a collision course of epic proportions, and the Oval Office/White House setting is ripe for all sorts of plot machinations. T and Blayne do not disappoint! They pull off what I would call a blasted good read by keeping the narrative rolling and keeping the reader guessing.This one is destined to be a classic. I can only hope that there is a sequel to tell us more about the 2nd through 4th years of President Marlowe's term. Jolly good job!"

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful By A Wray I've read this book twice now and i adore it. I won't go into details about the actual storyline, see other reviews for one, I'll just tell you how the book made me feel. It made me feel like I feel when I'm in love. It made me feel that I'd somehow opened a window on someone else's world, a world that felt as real as my own. I couldn't put it down. It's a wonderful novel about a true deep abiding love between two women. A warm, funny, touching and wonderful hearwarming story that you just wish could be true. I loved the fact that you weren't presented with sex two pages in... infact there isn't really a full on sex scene in the whole book... that's not to say that I wouldn't have enjoyed some though, but somehow that just wouldn't have been right in this story. That's not to say that there wasn't attraction, there was and plenty of it, but the novel just didn't go the whole way into hot and heavy sex, (there are of course some introductory sex scenes but they are beautifully handled and somehow don't come across as just sex for the sake of it) and I for one thought it was wonderful. It allowed me to use my imagination and to really feel the characters emotions. I loved the way the women started out as stranagers, strangers with a strong attraction but strangers nervertheless. I loved the way the story brought the characters friendship and deep love, the type that we all long for but don't always find. I can't wait for the follow up FIRST LADY which I will buy asap. This story has pride of place on my bookshelf, buy it today and make it yours. You won't regret it.

Prince Alfred, who was created Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 and became Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gothain 1893, was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A patron of the arts, pioneer philatelist and amateur violinist, he joined the Royal Navy as a boy and rose to become Admiral of the Fleet. At the age of eighteen he was elected King of Greece by overwhelming popular vote in a plebiscite, although political agreements between the Great Powers of Europe prevented him from accepting the vacant crown. The most widely traveled member of his family, he had visited all five continents by the age of twenty-seven, and while on a tour of Australia in 1868 he narrowly escaped assassination at the hands of a Fenian sympathizer. Married to Grand Duchess Marie of Russia, the only surviving daughter of Tsar Alexander II, at one stage he had to face the possibility that he might be required to fight on behalf of the British Empire against that of his father-in-law. His last years were overshadowed by marital difficulties, alcoholism and ill health, and the suicide of his only son and heir.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Updated and Expanded Version By Crackers4Noël My daughter and I are fans of John Van Der Kiste and have purchased all his books. This is a much more current, expanded and updated version of his 1984 book "Dearest Affie," which was also available on Kindle until this book was published. This work provides almost 100 more pages and has included new material that has come to light since the initial work was published. It is definitely worth repurchasing this version if you are at all interested in Queen Victoria's son, who reigned as Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and was the Duke of Edinburgh before Prince Philip.

Roach Alfred: Queen Victoria's Second Son is a useful addition to the vast canon of books on Victoria and her extended family. References to Alfred are usually limited to a very predictable number of stories of his childhood relationship to Bertie, his brother, and their experiences aboard ship in the Royal Navy when they were very young. After that, he becomes barely a dot on the radar screen. I was fascinated to read about his enormous popularity throughout the Empire, the number of royal engagements he took on, and his complex personality. He could be beneficent and engaging. He could be a drunken bully. But the book has its share of problems. The author seems unable to make up his mind about Alfred. Again and again he will change his mind in mid-sentence about Alfred's performance as a royal person or about this basic goodness as a human being. There is disappointingly little about his wife, Marie, and her prickly relationship to the English royals. She arrived in England as a Russian Imperial Highness and spent a lifetime resenting being demoted to an HRH. The book ends so abruptly that one wonders if van der Kiste lost interest or just ran out of things to say. I didn't spot any factual errors, however the proofreading must have been done only by a computer's spell checker. An astonishing number of typos litter the page - but they are all "real" words, although the wrong words. Surely a human being should have been assigned the responsibility to go through with a red pencil. "Alfred: Queen Victoria's Second Son" is an excellent complement to having a complete collection on the topic.

Too many distracting typos as if spell-check was used and just because the word spelled right it was kept even though it was the wrong word. There were also a few inaccuracies and too often major issues were simply broad brushed over. Not well-written at all.

Laura ia an amazing author and storyteller. She hooks you from the get go. (Pun intended) She is very friendly and always interacts with her fans on facebook. As you can tell I'm a huge fan and highly recomend this series.

New format, same top-notch content By Madeline Elayne "The Academy" has the distinction of being the first book in novelogy format that I've had the pleasure of reading. I was pretty sure that I'd find the format jarring, but somehow it worked. (Maybe it was all the sex that kept me interested!) As the plot follows Chris Parker from the first 3 novels, and cheeky Michael LaGuardia from The Trainer to a Marketplace training convention of sorts in Okinawa, Laura Antoniou weaves short stories from several amazing authors into the narrative. "Whatever happened to Matson, that spotter we haven't seen in years?" a character might ask. And of course, someone will launch into his tale ("Bullseye," written by Cecilia Tan, shares the cautionary tale of the disgraces spotter.)Not surprisingly, the book continues in the incredibly erotic, passionate, and highly literate style to which readers of Antoniou's books have become accustomed. This time, though, we get to be treated to the guests in her sandbox too. M. Christian's "The Tiger in the Dining Room" is charming and endearing. Karen Taylor's "The Nurse", my favourite short story included in the book, makes me cry every time I read it. (her other three stories in the anthology are pretty delightful as well, especially "Alex's Choice," though I admit to a prejudice for that one since Rachel is my favourite character in the series.) "Redemption" ,by Michael Hernandez, is a guilty pleasure to enjoy. "In Service" by david stein is guaranteed to make you smile. And of course, the anecdotes written by Antoniou herself are guaranteed to be frustratingly arousing.I'm not sure if I can pick a favourite of the Marketplace novels, but this one is definitely one of the runners-up. Woth picking up in ebook format, too, for the amusing bonus story "Inside Straight."My rating: 5/5 dashing Canadian sled dogs.

Nilsen The US "standard-type battleships," so-named because all of the ships from the Nevada-class through to the London Naval Treaty were incremental improvements of a basic design, were the backbone of the US Navy at the start of WW2, until we realized (or were forced to realize) it was really those funny flat-topped ships. These ships became the Navy's "OBBs" (second-line battleships to distinguish them from the fast battleships starting with USS North Carolina) which were the shore-bombardment invasion backbones the Pacific and European invasions. They were all built to a similar size and had similar performance, so could operate as a more or less "homogeneous" battle line. The "standard-type" also included the later Tennessee and Colorado classes, known collectively as "The Big Five," which will be covered in the next volume of this mini-series.The key developments of the standard type were oil-fired boilers, main guns in triple turrets, and the US Navy's "all or nothing" armor epiphany, all of which are covered in this book.As with Stille's previous Osprey titles, this book does a good job with discussing design decisions and the resulting armor schemes. Because almost all of these ships (those not sunk) underwent two reconstructions (in the 1920s-30s and again after Pearl Harbor), keeping up with all of these modifications and changes is a major requirement for this book, which Stille handles well. One excellent detail is the use of tables to capture the bewildering changes to antiaircraft armament on the ships during WW2. A rough patch in the book is with propulsion. Although establishing that Nevada was fitted with turbines as opposed to Oklahoma's old-style reciprocating engines, he later states that "Nevada had her reciprocating engines replaced by new geared turbines from the cancelled battleship North Dakota." This is wrong in two specifics: first Nevada already had turbine, not reciprocating engines, and the turbines that replaced her existing turbines were from the old USS North Dakota (BB 29) which got them in 1917 to replace her faulty engines. (Oklahoma was never re-engined, resulting in a complaint in 1936 by CINC US Fleet that she could no longer hold her place in the battle line without being re-engined.)There is a dramatic statement on page 8 that is not explained. "Firepower was improved by increasing the maximum gun elevations, which gave longer ranges. This was accomplished in spite of a treaty clause that specifically banned such an improvement." This is a great simplification, and is discussed in Agents of Innovation: The General Board and the Design of the Fleet that Defeated the Japanese Navy. Briefly, plans to do so in 1923 were objected to by the British, and the USN spent a number of years working on a "liberal interpretation" of the governing "Reconstruction Clause," which turned on the single word, "mounting" which did not appear in the French version of the treaty. But by the time the USN determined it was justified in proceeding it was too late to modify the six battleships previous to the Nevada class.The book explains that detailed discussion of fire control and radar will be contained in the following volume.One thing I would still prefer to see in these books is for the ship data tables to be expanded to show more than just laid down, launched, commissioned to add reconstruction/refit and loss/decommissioning dates. That data exists in the text so you have to dig for it and can't easily compare it. The class specification tables should really be combined so you can see and compare all the classes at once. Any table that is merely one row is not really a table at all. But there are nice tables for the anti-aircraft fits mentioned above, for war damage, and all major WW2 operations supported by the OBBs, including those that will be in Volume 2, which is a very nice touch.Unlike some previous Vanguard books, the new color illos are not simply line-for-line colorizations of A L Raven/A D Baker in Friedman's U.S. Battleships: An Illustrated Design History, but show additional interpretation compared to corresponding Raven/Baker baselines. The paintings are:1. Side full-hull of Oklahoma, December 1941. Although noted as being in the Measure 5 Painted Bow Wave scheme, the artist has neglected to paint the bow wave. (Baker, p. 200)2. Side waterline view of Nevada 1945 in Measure 31 after her last refit. The artist has misrepresented the shape and hatch placement on the twin 5"/38s so most of them look like single 5"/38s, compare to photo on page 10. The artist appears to have misinterpreted the 20mm gallery before the bridge to be stand-alone rather than attached. (Raven p. 370)3. Action painting of Nevada off Cherbourg in 1944. Artist still has a problem with the proper 5"/38 shape. Also, he had painted the X turret as a triple (as in Pennsylvania class) instead of a twin. Although he has painted out the third gun barrel, the third shroud is still visible on the turret face. Additionally, as can be seen in a number of the good photos elsewhere in the book, the superfiring twin turrets are both narrower and shorter than the triples.4. Side waterline view of Arizona in 1921 with cage masts and biplane on flying-off platform on B turret. (Sim to Raven, 110)5. Side waterline of Pennsylvania in Measure 21 in 1944. The twin 5"/38s are a mix of good and not-so-good. Amusingly, following source photos, the artist has duplicated the censor's act of deleting the radar from the foretop. (Raven, 371)6. Centerfold cutaway of Arizona at Pearl Harbor, including the turret tops in the bright red recognition color of Arizona's division revealed by the latest research. However the art appears to be in grey instead of the medium blue indicated by that research. Given the attention given to the recent research, I am disappointed that the caption didn't talk a little bit about that. There's plenty of white space for it.7. Waterline view of Mississippi upon commissioning in 1917 with cage masts. (Raven, 133)8. Full-hull view of New Mexico in 1942 in blotchy Measure 12. (Raven, 206)9. Waterline view of Mississippi in 1943 in Measure 22. (Raven, 351)10. Waterline view of Idaho in 1945. Although not specified in the caption, it looks to be Measure 21, which is correct. This is a nice feature in this book, as Idaho was the only BB ever armed with single 5"/38s. (Raven 351)11. Action painting of New Mexico in Measure 32 being hit by a Kamikaze in 1945. Although simply a painted version of the photo on the previous page, it is colorful and dramatic.The photo selection is good, and shows all ships in a variety of as-built, post-1930s reconstruction, and WW2 configurations. Given the small size of these books (page real estate and number of pages) photo selection is tricky, but all are in good detail which can be seen at the size available. I was hoping to maybe see a color photo or painting of Nevada painted orange as the Operation Crossroads target, but that's not here, and falls outside the proper scope of the book anyway. As a bonus, the Bibliography spread includes two striking photos, first the magnificent photo of Pennsylvania leading BB Colorado, CAs Louisville and Portland, and CL Columbia in Lingayen Gulf. Often identified as October 1944, Stille has correctly dated it to January 1945, although he uses the wartime photo where the censor has removed Pennsylvania's radar rather than the uncensored version also available. He has also included a similarly impressive and rare photo of Idaho leading Pennsy and a pair of CVEs to Saipan.This is a nice start to a great subject. Bring on the Big Five!

By Ned Middleton Once again, established author, maritime historian and US Navy Commander retired!, Mark Stille has produced a product to delight readers from all backgrounds. Known for his prodigious output, this remains all the more remarkable once we consider the amount of detailed information provided in the relatively small space of 48 pages. Whereas much larger books on this subject will exist, I find Stille’s series of “expanded overviews” of different ship types contain almost all the information I am seeking. Little wonder they are so popular!All things considered, this work provides people with a detailed knowledge of the subject with all the facts and figures they might require ‘at a glance’ whilst also providing an excellent introduction for those with little or no knowledge at all. Add to that the additional elements of; an easily readable style of writing, an excellent selection of photographs and some of the best descriptive artwork we are ever likely to find and there is no alternative to full marks.The book commences with an Introduction entitled; The Impact of Naval Treaties on USN Battleship Development. This provides the political background to Battleship design and weapons limitations at the time. The book is then divided into two sections: American Battleship Design Developments (Interwar reconstruction of American Battleships, American Battleship weapons and USN Battleship radar) and The Battleship Classes (Nevada, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico). The work then concludes with; Analysis & Conclusion, Bibliography and Index.Put another way, Stille begins by expertly setting the scene by describing the international treaty limitations and the US response in terms of strategy, design and reconstruction. This is amply supported by historic B&W photographs showing individual ships and weapons systems. The main ‘meal’ is of course the class-by-class description where nothing seems to have been omitted and is again fully supported by a series of carefully selected photographs in which the reader’s attention is drawn to specific features. These are images of the highest possible quality.My final comments, however, are reserved for the outstanding artistic illustrations which fall into three broad categories; Pages 15 and 33 show two starboard-side profiles (full vessel and waterline) of the Nevada and New Mexico class respectively. Pages 25 and 37 each show two slightly differing waterline starboard-side profiles of the Pennsylvania class and New Mexico class (later in WW2). Secondly, page 21 shows an artist’s impression of the USS Nevada under fire at sea and page 41 shows the Kamikaze strike on USS New Mexico off Luzon in January 1945.The most remarkable illustration, however, is found across pages 28-29 and shows a three-quarter starboard profile of the legendary USS Arizona complete with cutaway view of No 2 Gun turret from top to bottom and the adjacent powder and shell magazines. Every time I see one of these particular images I always marvel at the artist’s understanding of ships, naval architecture and perspective. It really is an excellent image - spoiled only by the central crease of the book.In conclusion, from expert to novice, I doubt anyone will be disappointed in this work. Do enjoy.NM

The text describes the service history and wartime modifications of these ships and there are many good-resolution photos, most of which, unfortunately, are quite small; there are also a number of color diagrams and paintings of these ships. All in all, good value for the money.

I've read a couple from this series, and this one took my breath away. I originally borrowed it through Kindle Unlimited, but ended up buying it so I could read it again. Fantastic!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Masterful Story By Mark Paxson Let's put it this way. I had to travel this weekend, spending a few hours in airports and on airplanes. I took four books with me because you never know what might hit you on a given moment. I started with Town Father and really didn't need the other books until I had finished it. Town Father is a great little story, masterfully spun by Mr. Brennan. It is the type of story that should get a lot of attention.

By Marie Ann Bailey This latest novel by Kevin Brennan could be considered a slight departure from his earlier novels. Town Father is historical fiction (1880s forward), written in a style that evokes the manners and sentiments of the time. But that is as far as it departs. All the rest—the dry humor, the humanity, the subtle but pointed political commentary (“I am afraid for the country, though in many ways I no longer live in it”)—is there, just as it is in his earlier work. And it is what all his novels and short stories have in common that make them quintessentially the work of Kevin Brennan.On the surface, Town Father is a polite, delightful story of a utopian experiment: the establishment of a town of 300 women, who are all “serviced” by one very dedicated and moral gentleman. It sounds almost whimsical, except from the very beginning of the novel, the reader develops sympathy for the gentleman which leads quickly to a desire to protect him. Henry O’Farrell is a kind, dutiful man who suffered a broken heart due to the fact that his beloved’s father thought him a man of few prospects. His pain is such that he suffers from stuttering and asthmatic attacks whenever in the company of a beautiful woman. So imagine how he might fare among 300 beautiful women.Without telling you the whole story, suffice to say that Brennan neatly lays out a plot that contrives to have Mr. O’Farrell innocently move from Philadephia to the foothills of the Sierras in California, thinking his mission in his new employment to be simply the clerk of a new town called Hestia. He is completely unaware of the intent of the six women who govern Hestia. Once all is made clear, he struggles against the seeming immorality of it, but it’s too late. He is smitten with all of Hestia, as is, by that point, the reader herself.Hestia is idyllic, with every citizen contributing to the growth and well-being of the community, using the best of her talents and skill. And so does Henry contribute, heretofore unaware of his soon-to-be apparent talents and skill in getting women pregnant. But still, Henry is an ideal Town Father in that he believes in his mission (as comically as that is presented at times) and he sympathizes with the community’s concern about male influences: “[…] they are so right about humans of the male persuasion in this world. It is—sad to say—a Darwinian place, this earth and country we hand down to our children, where the strong and belligerent win every time.”But can such a utopia truly last? There are tensions between Hestia and the nearest town, where the men look upon Henry with suspicion and disdain. Outsiders intrude, quickly discerning the town’s secrets, and for a time Henry leaves, believing that his presence will only make things worse. There are no easy resolutions as the outside world presses in, but the women of Hestia, and, eventually again, Henry, persevere. Though in this review, I’m focused on Henry, each of the major female characters—Avis, Maisie, Tilly, Willow, Callipoe, Lucien, Paige to name a few—left deep impressions on me. You would think with such a large cast of characters, the reader would get lost, forget who is who. But much like Henry, who learns to recognize each visitor to his bed even in the dark, the reader learns to tell Tilly from Paige, Avis from Lucien.I had the good fortune to read the second half of the book in one sitting, a relief since a number of the plot twists turn there. Initially this novel seemed to be turning into nonfiction since in the first half, Hestia runs smoothly and grows by leaps and bounds thanks to Henry’s service. But darker times come and they don’t go away easily. Hestia and Henry are tested, and during that second half, I was often on the edge of my seat (actually, couch), eager to find out what would happen next.I will say the ending surprised me, ending on more of a philosophical note than a cliffhanger or plot twist: “The culmination of life may as well be this moment, he thought.” But I want things to end well for Henry and for Hestia. I’m not sure I can fully believe that without Henry, the town will be able to keep the outside world out. But that I could believe at all that one man, even the right man, could enable a community of women to prosper points to the power of Brennan’s writing.I highly recommend Town Father. If you want just a delightful romp through what could be everyman’s dream, it’s the book for you. But if you want that romp to test your sense of the world, of humanity, and of morality (oh, the irony of a thief and possible murderer referring to Henry as immoral), then this book is also for you.

Howell I have been a fan of Kevin Brennan's writing since I read Yesterday Road and was not disappointed when I rushed to buy Town Father. My fandom (if that is a word) is based on Kevin's extraordinary ability to take a small piece of a story and build it into a literary tour de force. As a writer, I am hopelessly in awe of Kevin's writing and in some small way I pick up his books with the idea of being exceptionally critical. Instead, I walk away with new learning on character and plot development.The story itself is very straightforward. A guy is asked to come to a town of nothing but women to take over the duties slowly revealed to be the sire for a new generation of residents. Okay enough said. The reader can now expect a bunch of machinations around relationships, right? Wrong. The reader has no idea what is to unfold and here is the best part. The reader has to stay with the story because it is told so damn well that the outcomes are not the point. The point is the journey to get to the outcomes.The town is a utopia, and the protagonist is living the dream of every male on the planet. The dream does come with some complications which Mr. Brennan masterfully weaves into the story. The reader becomes increasingly concerned about the health and welfare of not just the residents but the very town itself. We end up caring what happens to this little piece of heaven, and this then exemplifies the genius of the writing.The story is one that will be enjoyed by all readers no matter the genre preference. I give the book five stars and anything less would not be an honest reflection of my appraisal. (envious or no)
