The Other Ninth Air Force takes a detailed look at how the Artillery Air Section of a US Army Headquarters functioned during the Second World War in Europe. It relates how its Air Observation Post aircraft were procured, crewed and operated as recorded by the officer responsible for such matters. In this instance, the HQ was that of Ninth US Army and the officer concerned was the late Lt-Col. Robert M. Leich. As Artillery Air Officer, Leich maintained a daily journal and this is the principal source on which this book is based. The result is a book of a different kind, covering both operational and administrative matters. Also revealed is the close cooperation that existed between Ninth Army and the two USAAF 'air' units attached to it, namely the 125th Liaison Squadron and the 50th Mobile Reclamation and Repair Squadron

About the Author Ken Wakefield graduated in Bristol in 1928 and served with the Royal Air Force and RAF Volunteer Reserve. He later became an airline pilot, retiring after twenty-seven years service as a Senior Captain with British Airways. In 1974, he was elected a Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (MRAeS). Wakefield has previously had eight books and numerous articles published, all of an historical aviation nature, and for twenty-five years owned a 1944 ex-US Army Piper L-4.

The book covers the use of light aircraft by the artillery of the 9th Army (hence the title "The Other 9th Air Force") from 1944 until 1945 with the aircraft being used as spotters. Not a lot has been written by the use of these smaller aircraft and the topic is a very interesting one to me so I was pretty excited about when I finally received my copy. The book is 192 pages long, divided into 10 Chapters, 6 Appendices, 50 pictures, and 4 drawings. Unfortunately well over half of the book was taken from a journal but still written like a journal which can lead to very disjointed thoughts if an entry topic spread over more than one day. It was almost like trying to read a book written in the form of a bullet point presentation. A number of times it was mentioned that certain items such as the one piece windshield were hard to come by, but never goes into the explanation as to why. Several were shot down by enemy aircraft but most times just mentions they were shot down with little or no detail. It also does not go into a lot of detail in the actual use of the aircraft, I still have no idea how they where used in spotting. When the author does actually write he does a fantastic job and I really wished he had done it more. For me this was a challenging read. I give it 5 Piper Cubs.

It goes day by day from beginning of operations till end of war/post war movements. In each chapter it given an over very of the month then day by day. Some entrusting info and some day to day working of different units in side of 9th AA. But it was very so read and could not keep my attention for long.

By PP This book is a worthwhile addition for readers with an interest in the liaison pilot's war. Largely based on the war diary of Ninth Army Air Officer, then-LTC Robert M. Leich, the book provides a valuable overview of light plane operations in communications, observation, artillery directing, casualty evacuation, and light transport. This is the first history I have encountered which describes these activities from a command point of view. Consequently, the book lacks the large amount of personal reminisces more typical of the memoirs I have read by other liaison pilots, which makes the narration sometimes dry and repetitious since many of the problems remained the same throughout the war. However, the book is well researched, well written, and very informative.
