On November 21, 1961, Michael C. Rockefeller, the twenty-three-year-old son of New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, vanished off the coast of southwest New Guinea when his boat capsized. He was on a collecting expedition for the Museum of Primitive Art, and his partner—who stayed with the boat and was later rescued—shared Michael's final words as he swam for help: "I think I can make it."

Despite exhaustive searches, no trace of Michael was ever found. Soon after his disappearance, rumors surfaced that he'd made it to shore, where he was then killed and eaten by the local Asmat—a native tribe of warriors whose complex culture was built around sacred, reciprocal violence, headhunting, and ritual cannibalism. The Dutch government and the Rockefeller family vehemently denied the story, and Michael's death was officially ruled a drowning. But doubts lingered and sensational stories circulated, fueling speculation and intrigue for decades. Now, award-winning journalist Carl Hoffman reveals startling new evidence that finally tells the full, astonishing story.

Retracing Michael's steps, Hoffman traveled to the jungles of New Guinea, immersing himself in a world of former headhunters and cannibals, secret spirits and customs, and getting to know generations of Asmat. Through exhaustive archival research, he uncovered hundreds of pages of never-before-seen original documents and located witnesses willing to speak publicly for the first time in fifty years.

Savage Harvest is at once a mesmerizing whodunit and a fascinating portrait of the clash between two civilizations that resulted in the death of one of America's richest and most powerful scions.

Savage Harvest: A Tale of Cannibals, Colonialism, and Michael Rockefeller's Tragic Quest, by Carl Hoffman

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2014: “I think I can make it.” In 1961, while on an expedition to collect pieces for his father’s Museum of Primitive Art, Michael Rockefeller and his traveling companion were plunged into the warm waters off New Guinea. The billionaire scion tied two empty gas cans to his body for floatation and swam for shore, and by most accounts, he made it. But what happened there, when he encountered members of the Asmat tribe--a culture marked by ritual violence and cannibalism--has been long debated. Did he disappear into the tropical jungles, or was he rendered and eaten by the tribesmen, as many speculated and the Rockefeller family long denied? Award-winning journalist Carl Hoffman has stepped into Rockefeller’s boot prints and Asmat society, interviewing generations of warriors in an exhaustive and engrossing attempt to solve the mystery. The result, Savage Harvest, succeeds not only as a captivating and sensational puzzle, but also as a (seemingly unlikely) modern adventure and a fascinating glimpse of an anachronistic people pulled into the 20th century by the tensions of global politics. So, did he make it? The title might offer a clue. --Jon Foro

Simon WinchesterView larger Simon Winchester Reviews Savage Harvest: A Tale of Cannibals, Colonialism, and Michael Rockefeller's Tragic Quest for Primitive Art

Carl Hoffman, who with his 2010 book The Lunatic Express demonstrated himself to be a traveler of the greatest courage and determination, as well as a writer of skill, has now made a significant contribution to history. Savage Harvest, a narrative that is as exciting as it is instructive, appears finally to have winnowed the truth from the mare’s nest of legend and wishful thinking surrounding the disappearance in November 1961, of Michael Rockefeller, in a remote region of southwestern New Guinea. The 23-year old, along with a Dutch anthropologist colleague and two young guides, were sailing in a dugout catamaran some three miles from the coast of Asmat. The craft overturned; the two locals swam for help, but as the wreck drifted farther from land an impatient Rockefeller decided to try and make it alone. With two fuel cans to help his buoyancy on what he reckoned would be a twenty-hour swim, he slid into the warm shallows of the Arafura Sea - never to be seen by friends or family again.Did he drown? Was he eaten by a shark? Did he vanish into the jungle, Kurtz-like? Or was he the victim of cannibalism at the hands of coastal villagers? Hoffman has shown that with assiduous tradecraft, hard work and near-obsessive tenacity, it is possible to know, to solve the supposedly insoluble. He has journeyed, twice now, deep into the dark interiors of Asmat, and has conducted interviews and learned the language and listened to sensible men and women – in New Guinea, in the Netherlands, in the anthropology departments of knowledgeable universities. And he has used a severe intelligence to determine just what happened on that warm dawn Monday, November 20, 1961.The Rockefellers – not least Michael’s twin sister Mary, who produced her own book two years ago – may not want to believe this tale; and the family did nothing to help Hoffman in his admirable quest. But the truth, as this book chronicles in patient, meticulous detail, has a way of eking itself out. Savage Harvest is a remarkable testament to the revealed truth, and of its revealing - even if that truth is wholly bizarre and, to most, quite literally unpalatable.

Simon Winchester is the acclaimed author most recently of The Men Who United the States as well as Atlantic, The Professor and the Madman, The Man Who Loved China, A Crack in the Edge of the World, and Krakatoa, all of which were New York Times bestsellers. In 2006 Mr. Winchester was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty the Queen. He resides in western Massachusetts.

From Booklist *Starred Review* Award-winning travel writer Hoffman’s (The Lunatic Express, 2010) penchant for extremes fueled his demanding quest for the truth about Michael Rockefeller’s disappearance in New Guinea in 1961. Freshly graduated from Harvard and eager to emulate his art collector father, Nelson Rockefeller, then governor of New York, Michael became enthralled with the Asmat’s extraordinary wood carvings and was dashing from village to village, buying as many pieces as he could find, when his boat capsized in rough seas. Death by drowning was the official finding, but rumors of a far more horrific fate persisted. After arduous sojourns among the enigmatic Asmat, Hoffman came to understand how their ancient cosmology was enacted through “reciprocal violence,” headhunting, and cannibalism. He also realized just how risky Rockefeller’s buying spree was, given the bloody conflicts raging between the Asmat and the Dutch colonial authorities, and how little the novice collector knew about the spiritual significance of the art he was acquiring, including monumental works on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. By dint of grueling fieldwork, startling archival discoveries, revelatory visits with a Dutch missionary relieved to break his 50-year silence, profound insights, and muscular writing, Hoffman tells the unforgettable story of a soothing and politically expedient cover-up and a brutal and tragic collision of cultures. --Donna Seaman

Review “[Hoffman’s] reporting takes hold, drawing a vivid portrait of the world of the Asmat people, hunter-gatherers who lived in isolation until the mid-20th century. Gripping.” (New York Times Book Review)“In an expertly told tale that is begging for a film adaptation, Hoffman crafts a remarkable, balanced examination of this sensational case. . . . [He] deserves much credit for this riveting, multilayered tale.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“With urgency boarding on obsession, Carl Hoffman retraces Rockefeller’s perilous footsteps. An audacious and brilliant book By Ben F Noviello "Savage Harvest" is about much more than the 1961 disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in Papau, New Guinea. This brilliant book also contains elements of exploration, adventure, anthropology, politics, and personal introspection. My only complaint is that the book is too short. Any of these themes could justify far more words than are presented.Much like Carl Hoffman's previous book, "The Lunatic Express," everything about "Savage Harvest" is audacious: the physical and financial risks of his two trips, the belief that after so long there was still something new to uncover, the challenge of being accepted by the indigenous Asmat people with whom Hoffman lives, and even the notion that a marketable book could be created from a story in which headhunting and cannibalism are central concepts. Even the structure of the book, in which first-person contemporary reporting is combined with detailed, if plausible and well-documented, recreations of historical events indicates a writer who doesn't like to play it safe. Now, this is not a breezy read. Any book that begins with a graphic account of one man being killed and ritually eaten by other men requires a certain commitment from the reader. This is a book that I read in small sections, thus allowing me to fully process the many implications of the text. "Savage Harvest" demands, and rewards, a lot of thought. The most powerful message presented by "Savage Harvest" is that the Asmat live in a world profoundly different from the one occupied by those who are likely to read this book. Asmat values, Asmat social expectations, and even the relationship between the Asmat and "reality" can be fundamentally alien to a modern, western mind.Indeed, the most impressive accomplishment of this book is its complex treatment of the Asmat. "Savage Harvest" avoids reducing the Asmat to simple stereotypes such as Noble Savages or Oppressed Victims, or Uncivilized Heathens. Hoffman describes the good, the bad, and certainly the ugly, with brutal honesty. And he does so using evocative prose that frequently becomes poetic. My favorite example is when Hoffman writes, "There are people who don't like hanging out with spiders and dirt and naked men in pig grease, but Michael Rockefeller wasn't one of them."As for the truth behind the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller? I finished the book completely convinced of what Hoffman argues. However, there are still some aspects that seem mysteriously ambiguous. Things that we might never fully understand. And perhaps this is as it should be.

By Herbert L Calhoun As I was entering my sophomore year of college, Michael Rockefeller, the son of the then Governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller, was reported missing when the catamaran he and a friend were sailing on collapsed. This had happened near a remote island off the southwest coast of New Guinea, deep in the Pacific Ocean. What was reported in the newspapers at the time is that his friend chose to wait on floating debris and was rescued, but Michael chose to try to swim the five miles to the island in question, in a rather desperate personal search for primitive artifacts for his museum featuring items form the Asmat people. The Asmat tribe was a small group of pre-stone Age people, having little or no contact with the outside world. At first it seemed it would just be a matter of days before Michael would be found and reported alive -- after all he was a Rockefeller. But as the time stretched out, the chances that he would be discovered at all, dimmed. The conventional wisdom had it that undoubtedly he had drown. And then the reports petered out altogether ...Over the years, intermittent reports trickled-in but became more and more speculative and more and more macabre, until there were only a rash of unconfirmed reports of a death due to cannibalism? Those reports were received with equal measures of tantalizing shock and incredulity; and as often as not, were dismissed. Now with this book, it seems that after nearly 50 years, we do finally get the full story of what happened to him. And if this story can be trusted, and I believe many parts of it can, it is indeed a story worthy of the long wait.Apparently, Michael did not drown as many had speculated, but did indeed manage to swim to the Dutch island in question safely. Only to then be quickly captured, summarily executed and "ceremoniously cooked" and eaten by a local Armat tribe, apparently still in search of revenge for an earlier attack by the guns of white men who had shot and killed several of them three years before. Thus, the story reported here is that Michael was a victim of tribal revenge due to the earlier shooting. It is based on research and interviews of tribesmen and a careful study of documents and other forensic artifacts, and does go into great detail about the ritual of cannibalism -- so much so that a prudent reader might leave the book as I did, thinking that the author had a particular cannibalism fetish? Or at the very least, will leave one with the idea that he had an undue fascination with the tribal ritual of cannibalism? That part of the story actually gave me the creeps because it reminded me of a book I had read about six months ago about the revolution in Indonesia, a war that was taking place around the same time as the search for Michael's disappearance was still in full force. As is the case in this book, in that book too, Western reporters seemed to "zero-in" on the several claims of cannibalism on both sides of that conflict -- to the complete exclusion of the war itself! But in that case, it turned out (rather disappointingly for the cannibalistic thrill-seeking reporters), that the "so-called" incidences of cannibalism, were in fact staged symbolic chest-beating acts of war: mutual mockery of the adversary. A symbolic bite was taken out of the head of the adversary as part of their warrior victory dance. However, as this author reports it here, it is cannibalism in the flesh (excuse the horrible pun), that is, cannibalism "for real," conducted as a purification ritual that is intended to endow "the consumer" with the best qualities of the head of "those consumed."But here is this book's "kicker:" the fact that Michael Rockefeller may have been killed and eaten by a primitive tribe, is not the worse part of this story. That distinction must must be reserved for the cowardly Dutch government, which for decades knew the truth. However, since at the time they were the custodians of the islands in question, they were simply too embarrassed, to busy in a global CYA exercise that failed to report the truth of Michael's death. This book is an interesting read for those who want the author's speculative theories about why Michael was obsessed with collecting the art of primitive tribes, and thus about why he was willing to take the risky chance of swimming five miles to a remote island after his catamaran had collapsed. Although I found the story about what happened to Michael credible, I found the book itself altogether a bit to "campy," too much "inside Harvard baseball" and not enough compassion for Michael's death or hard cold analysis of the facts. Three stars

'Savage Harvest' it is: Powerful, Deep, Carefully Developed By David Roy, Ph D In 1961, Michael Rockefeller, son of Nelson Rockefeller disappeared on his second trip hunting for primitive art in Papua New Guinea. Despite intense searches, officially, the cause of his disappearance and presumed death has remained unknown, a mystery, since. The speculations ranged from his going native, drowning at sea, and being killed and eaten by members of the Asmat cannibal headhunters in the region. Recently, author Carl Hoffman set out to find better answers, and this the story of his experiences.Hoffman chooses to dispense with anything like an introduction. He offers no calm, rational overview of his report on what happened to Michael Rockefeller. Instead, he opens this masterful account with a body slam followed by knockout blow to the jaw: a detailed account, albeit speculative, of how the murder and following rituals of consuming Michael, body and spirit, might have taken place. When you wake up and shake off this stunning blow (never totally), he takes you on an extensive journey into the hearts and spirits of humans who are radically different from those of us in the "civilized" Western European world. Alien and Other, they truly are.Hoffman speculates that he and Michael Rockefeller were both lured by the opportunity to know first hand these differences, to know them from the inside. The outcome for Hoffman - the experiences that led to this book - is radically different than for Rockefeller's. His was a killing done by those whose world included spirits of their dead who create havoc if not avenged. Hoffman's well-supported speculation is that the Rockefeller scion most likely was a victim of a ritualized murder done to balance the earlier killings of indigenous cannibal headhunters by (white) Dutch soldiers. He would have been the first white man to be killed by these indigenous people; and only after white soldiers in [date] had shot several from the same village as those who killed Rockefeller.Hoffman's style and approach includes the ability to observe and narrate detail and present it without dramatic interpretation. It seems to blend the best of investigative journalism with a more scholarly style as exemplified by presenting well-documented interpretations and conclusions.Further, Hoffman goes deep enough into the culture to be able to lift out the very different spirituality and worldview (one in the same) for these people. While their biology, based on their DNA, is the same as any other Homo sapiens, interiorly they seem so difficult to understand, to "know" in the fullest sense possible, as to be truly and fully alien.Part of my interest in this book stems from a quest to discover a fuller picture of our species' basic nature when it comes to violence, particularly against other people. This is an ancient question: Are we inherently and irrevocably violent? A strongly related issue is to understand better the impact of killing a human being on the killer. For some in our culture, this is deeply unsettling. This can be true even when the killing would be considered justified, as in law enforcement, the military, or in situations of personal danger.Hoffman emphasizes that the Asmat for countless generations had a worldview that required a ritualized approach to killing in order to avenge those of one's own village killed by those in another village. When I asked if killing for them might be "disturbing" at some deep level, he felt that it would have been instead "emotionally powerful."Hoffman explained: "It may have been necessary for them; it may have been triumphant; it may have been morally or ethically just, but it's always a powerful act. To kill is to take, possess, take power, consume the other. If it had no power, no importance, it wouldn't happen on purpose, wouldn't have the sacred importance it did. For the Asmat, I think, head hunting and cannibalism was a product of a certain kind of self, a certain kind of stark dualism, one that defined the self via the other."Yet, in Hoffman's account in the book, shortly after the murder of Rockefeller, several Asmat men approached the area's resident Dutch priest, and allowed themselves to be questioned as to the details of what happened. Why? Were they disturbed and unsettled by what had been done? Or, as Hoffman suggested in an email, was this actually an effort to get the village of the men who killed Rockefeller in trouble (since this group either came from the other village or were related to someone in the village). It could not have been because of any Christian-informed guilt because at that time, their culturally defined spirituality was their controlling worldview.I am not any clearer on this question at this point. What does make sense to me, and is reinforced by Hoffman's account of the Asmat people, is that we Homo sapiens sapiens are malleable to a significant extent. We are hardwired to kill under a variety of circumstances. Yet we also seem to be hardwired to seek more caring and compassionate responses to others. To survive the next few decades, let along centuries, we are going to have to deliberately choose to cultivate the second position and not the first, something for which Hoffman's extensive work implicitly provides strong support.

John Aubrey (12 March 1626 – 7 June 1697), was an English antiquary, natural philosopher and writer. He is perhaps best known as the author of the Brief Lives, his collection of short biographical pieces. He was a pioneer archaeologist, who recorded (often for the first time) numerous megalithic and other field monuments in southern England, and who is particularly noted as the discoverer of the Avebury henge monument. The Aubrey holes at Stonehenge are named after him, although there is considerable doubt as to whether the holes that he observed are those that currently bear the name. He was also a pioneer folklorist, collecting together a miscellany of material on customs, traditions and beliefs under the title "Remaines of Gentilisme and Judaisme". He set out to compile county histories of both Wiltshire and Surrey, although both projects remained unfinished. His "Interpretation of Villare Anglicanum" (also unfinished) was the first attempt to compile a full-length study of English place-names. He had wider interests in applied mathematics and astronomy, and was friendly with many of the greatest scientists of the day. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, thanks largely to the popularity of "Brief Lives", Aubrey was regarded as little more than an entertaining but quirky, eccentric and credulous gossip. Only in the 1970’s did the full breadth and innovation of his scholarship begin to be more widely appreciated. He published little in his lifetime, and many of his most important manuscripts (for the most part preserved in the Bodleian Library) remain unpublished, or published only in partial and unsatisfactory form. This kindle edition of Brief Lives contains 132 biographies and a navigable Table of Contents.

The Secret Diary of Mrs. John Quincy Adams: Wife of the Sixth President of the United States, by Beatrice Cayzer

Review From Palm Beach Today International, page 18 on February 20, 2014 Beatrice Fairbanks Cayzer's newest book (her eighteenth) is The Secret Diary of Mrs. John Quincy Adams, wife of the sixth President.  Her novel exposes secrets of international diplomacy, Washington politics, and the tumultuous marriage between John Quincy Adams and his British-born wife Louisa Johnson Adams.

From the Author I truly care about these two individuals.  John Quincy Adams had no choice but to aim for the Presidency having been coerced by both parents to aim for the highest office.  He ached to become one of the greatest writers of all time.  In the White House he suffered from depression and fought his demons by harsh daily criticism of his emotionally battered wife Louisa.  Yet he became the man who most fought slavery, according to Abraham Lincoln.  Louisa his English-born wife, through no fault of her own, disappointed him because her dowry was never paid and there was a dark secret in her background.  Louisa struggled in the role of First Lady, Ambassadors' wife, and hostess to Washington's Congressmen.  She endured twelve difficult pregnancies with only one adult child to comfort her in her old age.  Louisa matured into becoming a human sword against slavery and helped American women to eventually win the vote.

From the Inside Flap President John Quincy Adams wed English-born Louisa Johnson after a two year pause between the asking and going through with the marriage. He tried to get out of marrying her, a twenty-two-year old spinster with a shady promise of a dowry that could never be paid, and a murky secret in her background. During their 50-year-long marriage both endured difficult times. As president,  John Quincy Adams suffering from serious depression, could not push through any of his most important measures. Both John Quincy Adams and Louisa were deeply disturbed from their earliest youth by the horrors of slavery.  Together John Quincy and Louisa were able to accomplish the commencement of the end to slavery.  The challenge brought them together in a late amorous relationship soaring to blissful heights. Their relationship unfolds in Louisa's own strenuous voice from the pages of her secret diary.  She spares no details about the journeys she takes, the hardships she endures, and most of all the work it takes to learn to put love into every word and action.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Vivid tropical ambience, but tedious, predictable plots By Karl Janssen A Son of the Sun is a collection of short stories by Jack London, all of which originally ran in the Saturday Evening Post in 1911. These eight stories share a common protagonist in David Grief, a South Seas entrepreneur, trader, shipping magnate, plantation owner, and self-made man of means. "Quick eye that he had for the promise of adventure, prepared always for the unexpected to leap out at him from behind the nearest cocoanut tree," Grief, a true man's man, spends his leisure time seeking out action, and the islands of the South Pacific offer up plenty. In "The Jokers of New Gibbon," Grief and his crew venture to the titular island to check on one of his remote plantations. There, a once fierce native dictator, now fallen from power and addicted to alcohol, reluctantly serves his white masters. But when a practical joke is played at his expense, he retaliates violently. "A Little Account with Swithin Hall" is a mystery tale in which Grief stumbles upon an uncharted island belonging to a wealthy trader of legend. When he enters Swithin Hall's luxurious mansion and meets the mystery man face to face, Grief senses something fishy is going on, and decides to investigate. "The Pearls of Parlay" takes place on the atoll of Hikihoho, where a crazy old miser is auctioning off his pearl collection. The sale draws several interested parties from all parts of the Pacific, Grief included, but the proceedings are interrupted by an approaching hurricane. Even when seeking out some rest and relaxation, Grief stumbles into excitement, as in "A Goboto Night," in which he manages to find the time, over a high stakes game of cards, to teach a boorish young jackass a lesson about being a man. While the plot summaries sound engaging enough, the stories in A Son of the Sun are far from London's best work. Perhaps the mass appeal of the periodical that published them contributes to their tameness, or maybe it's the recurrence of the lead character that's the problem. One of the best qualities of London's stories has always been his ability to shock and surprise, but there's little chance of a surprise ending when it's preordained that Grief will survive for the next episode. As far as short stories go, these are rather lengthy, yet they don't possess plots worthy of such extensive treatment. Each one feels like a long buildup that yields little payoff. London takes great effort to fill out the word count with handfuls of vivid local color. He's highly skilled at capturing the torpid atmosphere of the tropics, the macho camaraderie of the white traders and sailors, and the colorful nuances of island slang. Nevertheless, in the service of such weak story lines it all just feels like filler. Included amongst all the local color is a bit of racism, but for the most part it is appropriately accurate to the time and place. The use of the "n word" is just as justified here as it is in Huckleberry Finn. One of the book's opening paragraphs, however, is absolutely inexcusable in its relentless comparison of black islanders to monkeys. I don't mean to overemphasize these brief passages, because overall I wasn't so much offended by A Son of the Sun as I was merely bored by it. If you're looking for tales of tropical adventure written by a true master of the short story, I would recommend you forego this book and check out London's Hawaii tales in the fine collections The House of Pride and On the Makaloa Mat.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Everything a boy could want. By Ignatz Shmigelski Jack London's tales of the south seas in this title provide everything a boy needs, action, adventure, deception, intrigue, fighting, drinking, trading, storms, and boats. This book follows a south seas trader as he manages his fleet and plies his trade, dealing with double crossers, native peoples, white traders, greed, and of course, the weather. Open this book and you are transported to a different time and place. Some of the language is archaic, and there is use of terms that are not longer smiled upon. Please remember that this book was written at a different time, and that they are just words. Some of the dialogue with the natives is in dialect, it is not important to know the exact meaning. Keep an open mind.If you are looking for some adventure, this is a good place to look

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Jack London at his (almost) best and worst. By Kendal B. Hunter “I have wrought my simple planIf I give one hour of joyTo the boy who's half a man,Or the man who's half a boy.” Arthur Conan DoyleAdmittedly, these adventure stories are the type of hack-work that Jack London himself lamented in “Martin Eden.” But the ever-talented London is able the weave spell that involves high danger in exotic locals, and celebrating the rugged individualism that both men and women aspire to, and cherish. Mind candy, popcorn, and fun for boys of all ages. Each story can be read in 30 minutes for a half-hour of escape from the Dilbert cubical. On the other hand, London was a “Typhoid Mary” of some rather wrong ideas. (He did not originate them, but was link in the chain of fools.) Two of the most prominent there the racial slurs against Asians, blacks and South Pacific aboriginals; and celebrating the colonial/imperialism of postbellum America and antebellum Europe.Probably the most disgusting tale is “The Proud Goat of Aloysius Pankburn.” Spoiler: Some of the South Pacific aboriginals come across a lost Ecuadorian treasure chest. Unaware of the value of the money, Captain David Grief and Aloysius Pankburn manage to cheat the aboriginals out of the treasure, in a perverse application of Gresham's Law.On the other hand, Grief has great relations with Mauriri and the other natives in “The Devils of Fuatino.” In fact, he protects them from abuse from the Europeans. The tales, then are not all exploitative. So … the stories are enjoyable, as far as they go. And the rich adventurer reminds me of the old TV show “Matt Houston.” Then again, the Green Hornet, Batman, and Doc Savage were chips off of the Iron Man block: “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.”And as to the historical blots, I think they can be taken with a grain of salt. I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so books such as “A Study In Scarlet,” “Around the World In 80 Days,” or “Riders of the Purple Sage,” could be taken as offensive. They are all infested with Danites, blood atonement, and other stereotypes.(Admittedly, Verne paints our missionaries as buffoons.)We can “piece out … imperfections with [our] thoughts” (Henry V, Prologue), and separate the adventure and craftsmanship from the slurs, and be aware when similar things happen nowadays.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Their obsession grows and mistakes continue… By ZR1000 This is the second volume of the Silk serial which should be read in order.A week away from each other has strained both Ian and Kristina to the breaking point. Their addiction to each other so evident and it causes Ian to make a move that hurts Kristina. Typical thinking of a man that such an act would work. She’ll deal with that so long as he understands the hurt it caused and a promise that it won’t happen again. They are together and momentarily happy as two like them can be but insecurities still plague them, stability in their relationship not yet tenable. The erotic book that Ian wrote, with a title that mirrors this serial, is published and it’s a bestseller. Things are looking up for both of them professionally. Kristina gets a part that she’s been wanting and Ian has a new historical fiction book to write for his publisher in three months. With research to do in Rome Ian plans a trip for the both of them. His excitement is contagious and not wanting to hurt him Kristina makes a mistake, an omission that she regrets when he learns what she’s been hiding from him on the morning news. The end of this volume mirrors the plot. I find it amusing to read a book about an author writing a book inspired by events within the book that I’m reading. This was an intense episode just as intriguing as volume one, the pain these two feel when they are apart underlines their obsession. Is this love like they tell each other or another form of the addictive tendencies that they suffer from? You want them to find happiness and some normalcy but you can see the mistakes due to their insecurities coming from their inner thoughts. Their regrets are heartbreaking, they are trying but they are flawed individuals and their making of mistakes is inevitable. As a reader I never thought I would root for characters with addictive tendencies but there is something about this couple that I find compelling.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Silk Volume Two By Donna Ferriola This is the second book in this four part series and it just keeps getting better. This story is about two troubled individuals that are addicted to each other. Ian has problems functioning with out Kristina by his side every minute and she is his writing muse. She is so insecure of their love and she has a budding movie career and was almost ready to give up a role that will make her a star. He had booked a trip to Rome to research his next book and expected her to go with him. She could not tell him she could not go because she did not want to disappoint him. In the meantime the book titled Silk that he self published under a fake name T. Anderson has made the best sellers list which was all about their love story. Can their love survive this latest impasse? He leaves for Rome and says goodbye to her but is it really goodbye for good? We have to read Silk 3 to find out what is going to happen next and I really cannot wait to start reading it.

I wanted to be an informatics nurse and I knew that I was almost to my goal. I just had to get through the certification exam and I would be home free. I needed a study aid, though, in order to guide me through the things I needed to know for the test. I knew I could do it if I studied hard and reviewed all the right information. When I got this study guide, I was happy to see that I didn’t have to look any farther than this one guide. I thought I might need to find a number of guides that went over various classes I took, but this guide had it all. IT went over all of the information I needed to know for the test and broke it down into organized categories so I could study one category at a time and make sure I had it down before I moved on. I was just thrilled to use this guide, which also included some test taking tips and study methods that helped as well. I knew certification was important and with this guide, I felt confident that I would get it on my first try. It was nice to have everything I needed lined up in one place with no effort on my part other than a short internet search

Three months have passed since the United States ripped itself apart. Shadowy forces continue sabotaging peace negotiations at every turn, while the American Taliban and other insurgents keep fanning the flames of hate and vengeance. With every drop of blood shed, Operation Enduring Unity takes on a life of its own. In the misguided belief that force alone can end the war, Washington readies the largest military invasion since World War II. Out West, the California-based United Republics of America prepare some surprises of their own. As the American Cold War turns hot, patriots on each side fight to keep the whole country from burning down. From the high-tech air, land and sea killing grounds to the rhetoric-stained halls of power, prepare for an extreme tour of American history in the making. From sea to shining sea.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Even More Mayhem Than the First By Randy Stafford Amateurs think tactics, dilettantes think strategy, and professionals think logistics.Disrupting enemy supply chains is a one of the main elements of Peters' novel. Given that both sides use the internet and speak the same language, it's easier than in a lot of other wars. The other big element is that the fortunes of war can change very quickly. Victory, in the propaganda and shooting wars, shifts rapidly here. The first book used political analogies from history. This book uses battle analogies. The rebel URA mounts a Bay of Pigs style effort in Florida. Denver threatens to become Stalingrad as the USA attempts an invasion of its breakaway western states.Peters also introduces some new weaponry that seems plausible. For all I know, you can already buy some of this stuff. There is a bit of a secondary theme promoting the competency of women on the modern battlefield. We get a new character, Sergeant Danielle Walker, who is thoroughly professional and capable.Even more battlefield mayhem than the first novel, and the introduction of various "insurgent groups" make this novel as enjoyable as the first.Peters promises to wrap the story up with one more book which, given where he leaves the story, is going to be interesting.Recommended as strongly as the first installment.

Each believes it is the rightful government. Emotions run on high octane visceral. Patriots and demagogues occupy the terrain. Rhetoric has failed and politicians on both sides turn to war, a fight to the death. We are introduced to the story when a truck careening through the streets comes under fire from insurgents, a combat action that aptly sets the pace of the novel. There are sweeping views of politics, military operations, and rationalizations by the selfish, the idealists, and the self-servers. The author has provided an insightful journey into human behavior and war. There is a full range of characters: patriots, professional soldiers, politicians of every stripe, terrorists, and war profiteers. Combat is just the way that soldiers actually experience it. Battles progress with the usual confusion. The author's own military experience lends reality to the grit and horror of war. This is the second book in a trilogy. Although it can be read as a standalone novel, it is not the complete story. Best to read all three. .Reviewed by the author of The Children's Story, About Good and Evil.

The title and the short Amazon description looked interesting. It was a happy choice. This is fine social science fiction. In the grand old tradition of Heinlein and A. E. van Vogt Mr. Peters takes current social and political trends and extrapolates them out to there logical conclusions. He also seems to have a great deal of fun doing it. The fact the Mr. Peters was an operational level grunt helps a great deal in the verisimilitude of the novel. He gives a stunningly real description of modern weapon systems and there effects.I understand that this is the second of three books in this series and I look forward to reading the third. I hope that the author will continue to produce fine novels like this for a long time.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Good Read By Amazon Customer I really liked these stories. They stir up memories of things that are probably common to a lot of people who grew up in the '50's: playing with the neighborhood kids till dark, neighborhood "characters", Catholic school days, the thrill of being a teenager in the '60's, altered roles as a wife/Mom or husband/Dad in the 70's and 80's, etc. But they also speak to timeless things: growing up, romance, disillusionment. Some of them make you remember how it feels to be young. They remind me of Hemingway's Nick Adams stories.

This book will take you back to different stages of your life and remind you of lessons learned. It illustrates the similarities of generations as the experience of growing up changes but life lessons stay the same. No matter what your age you'll relate to and feel for the characters. Golden Girl made me want to shake Chet to wake him from the spell Melissa had over him. Talk to me, Casey gave me a warm feeling from the peace that was found. Would recommend this book!

When the biker is a beast !!!Lara has to choose between the hunky, long hair, tattoo biker guy that she meets when her car breaks down or the clean , cute, normal looking Dr man that her family introduces her too. Oh the choice is so clear in my eyes! Lara is a vet and has always felt like she was living in her younger sister's shadow. When she has to choose between two handsome guys will she go with the guy that her family will approve of or the only one that she really wants?!Caleb has never really liked the human race, they are forever hunting his species down and trying to kill them or experimenting on them to see how they are different. One night out on a run he runs into the most amazing, person he has ever seen, or smell.... what is that smell, could it be after some years, could it be his mate.Lara and Caleb both are hit with some huge surprises, will it pull them apart or bring them closer together.I would rate this book 4 out of 5 fangs!Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.

I liked Lara, she is bubbly and a bit of a wildcat when it comes to Caleb By Emily Heisler Lara Walker couldn't have been happier with the way her blind date turned out, that is until she happened to meet Caleb Grayson on her way home. Lara now has to choose between two men, but the draw to Caleb is strong.Caleb can't believe his mate is a human. He sets out to court her, but there are a few hiccups in the way, the biggest is explaining he is a wolf.Fun read. I liked Lara, she is bubbly and a bit of a wildcat when it comes to Caleb. You know from the moment Caleb realizes Lara is his mat he is smitten, I thought his wooing process was fantastic.

Good ride By The Romance Reviews Reviewed by LiaLfor TheRomanceReviews.comLara Walker is leading a pretty quiet life as a vet and dreaming of the day when she can open her practice closer to her family home. She hasn't had a lot of dates and that is why she is so surprised when she meets two appealing men on the same day. The family meal she dreaded turns out to be the beginning of making her dreams come true. Lara has two men who want her and they could not be more different. One would be the easy choice and has already been selected by her family. The other is a biker with tattoos with whom she really feels a connection too.Caleb is actually not your average biker. He is a wolf shifter. He is shocked when he meets Lara and realizes she is his mate. He was not expecting a human as his mate and hasn't had a lot of good experiences with them. It doesn't stop his pursuit. Lara can't resist him either and behaves in a way that is not in her nature. Their mating leads to a lot of surprises for everyone. The author does a great job of giving the reader a clear idea of who Lara and Caleb are and what drives their behavior. Lara is the one in the family who feels like she doesn't measure up to the success of the others. She wants family approval and feels choosing Caleb will alienate those she loves. She is compelled toward him and doesn't understand the bond they formed immediately. Caleb understands immediately how important she is to him and takes steps to protect her which makes you really love him for her mate. I love surprises and there is a really good surprise that comes later in the story. It makes Lara's preceding behaviors and feelings a lot more sense.I enjoy a good ride. The story moves fast and keeps you interested. The characters are very devoted to those they love and it is easy to see why they would be a great couple. Their chemistry is hot and immediate. I love surprises and there is a great surprise that really is a game changer and explains so much.
