About the Author Born in Santa Monica and raised in Huntington Beach, California, Charles Epting is an undergraduate student at the University of Southern California studying history and geology. He is the author of A Brief History of University Park, Los Angeles" and "The New Deal in Orange County, California," as well as the editor of "Orange County Pioneers: Oral Histories from the Works Progress Administration."

By Pascal Tiscali The "about the author" blurb reveals that the author of this book is an *undergraduate* at University of Southern California. That may account for the slightly simple-minded tone of the text, which essentially reads like a tourist brochure. A bit more critical acumen would have been welcome. This being said, this is an informative book that serves its purpose - if you want to get a sense of what Los Angeles was like in the Victorian era (c. 1830-1900). The pictures are also quite good (in contrast to what another reviewer has said).One strange thing that is revealed in this book is that many of the famous parts of L.A. (Pasadena, Santa Monica, Long Beach) were originally founded as tourist resorts.
