An Interesting Look at History By Andy in Washington First things first- it is not obvious from the product description, but this book has a copyright date of 1906. That being said, it was an interesting read and provided a different perspective on how the Union and Central Pacific Railroads were built.=== The Good Stuff ===* Before I read a book, I always spot check the references, just to get a feel for how well the book has been researched and referenced. This book has none-usually a red flag for me. It was only then that I realized that William Baily had probably met most of the main characters personally, and had been an eyewitness to some of the construction.* I have read a bit about railroad construction, but this book had info I had never read before, probably the result of the author's direct observation. As an example, I often wondered at the procedure for bringing material to the construction front. Obviously you bring a string of cars on the already completed rail, but what do you do with the cars as you unload them? Eventually, if you have 20 cars full of rails, you have to unload the 20th car, and would need to carry rails a few hundred yards- a major waste of time and effort. The solution was obvious, once I read it. Once a car is unloaded, tip it over on its side next to the tracks. Then the other cars can pass along side it, and when the whole train is unloaded, just tip the cars back onto the rails and haul them away.* Similar detail is provided for the mechanics of actually laying the rails- the specific makeup of a crew and how they proceeded. On a higher level, the narrative describes how the limiting factor in much of the construction was the ability of the railroads to deliver materials to the construction site. I had always assumed it was labor shortages, or weather conditions, but it seems that the ability to procure and deliver steel and wood was the major limiting factor.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* As the narrative is over 100 years old, its age causes some issues. For example, the book states that wooden cross ties cost the railroads $2.50 to procure, deliver and install at the construction front. Short of doing outside research, it is tough to figure out just how expensive that figure is in modern dollars. (The answer is somewhere between $50 and $2000, depending on what website you use. Best guess is about $100).* Some of the language and writing styles are a bit dated, and the long paragraphs of 100 years ago are sometimes tougher to read. On the other hand, much of the language holds up quite well, and none of the text was especially hard to read. The older custom of writing out the values of large numbers also gets annoying. Amazingly enough, 100 year-old texts on the Kindle have remarkably fewer typos than more modern books.* Some of the explanations were less clear than others. The section on the financial shenanigans of the various Pacific railroads is not especially well presented-and is mostly confusing. Similarly, many of the geographic names mentioned in the text simply don't exist anymore. Since there are no maps in the book, you are somewhat at a roadblock to really understand the geography described.=== Summary ===I liked the book, and learned a bit about railroad construction from reading it. Much of the language, particularly about Chinese and other minority workers, were far from what would be politically correct, or even allowed, in a more modern narrative. However, I believe that history is best told in the vernacular of its time, even if the language seems unconscionable by modern standards.Similarly, it was interesting to read the occasional bits about the forecasts for the US and its transportation systems. One section describes how rail terminals in NYC would eventually handle international freight, with tags indicating freight to be forwarded to the US, Asia and Europe. It is a remarkable prescient forecast of how JFK airport functions.As a rail fan, if you are at all interested in a reasonably accurate and unvarnished account of how the roads were built, this is a good place to start. There are some limitations, but for a 100+ year old book, it is not a bad read at all.

By Tim Carter When I downloaded this book, I didn't realize it was written while a few of the major players were still alive. The last spike was driven in 1869, so you do the math.The book was somewhat disjointed but it contained some fascinating facts. Among them are the locations of the winter stopping points of the railroad. You see, in the winter months, construction - for all intents and purposes - STOPPED. It's like landscaping here in NH. The landscapers don't have much to do between November and April when the ground is covered with 2 feet of snow.Small towns sprung up and the workers just hung out along with the prostitutes, swindlers and neerdowells. Guess what? In a few locations, you can't even find a trace of where 5,000 workers stayed for five months. My advice to you, if you want a great background on what happened, is to read this book and that one written about 20 years ago by Stephen Ambrose. I'd also look at the bibliography of Ambrose's book and select a few of those texts.
