About the Author Ron Field is an internationally acknowledged expert on US military history. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1982, he taught History at Piedmont High School in California from 1982 to 1983, and was then Head of History at the Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water until his retirement in 2007. Ron was also associate editor of the Confederate Historical Society of Great Britain from 1983 to 1992. In 2005 he was elected a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians, based in Washington, DC, and was awarded its Emerson Writing Award in 2013. The author lives in Cheltenham, UK.

A time would come when Lee would have to make the decision to abandon Petersburg and Richmond if he was to save what was left of his army and of the Confederate cause..."Appomattox 1865" is an Osprey Campaign Series book by experienced historian Ron Field, with illustrations by Adam Hook. It captures, in surprising detail for the short length of this book, the final Civil War campaign in Virginia, as Grant's armies pursued Lee's dwindling force to a fateful meeting at Appomattox Court House. The narrative quickly sketches the opposing commanders, their forces, and their plans. The heart of the story is the short period time between March 29th and April 9th, as Confederate defenses collapsed and as Lee's army attempted to escape. A series of running battles on the roads between Petersburg and Appomattox are each described. The text is supported by a excellent selection of maps, battle diagrams, period photographs and art, and modern illustrations.Field's narrative captures the drama of the moment, and a sense of the inevitability of the conclusion, as Lee's option are foreclosed, one by one. In the scramble that followed the fall of Petersburg, both sides made mistakes, but Lee's army had less margin for error. Highly recommended as a very readable and informative introduction to the Appomattox campaign for the general reader and the student of the conflict.

By Phil Historian With Osprey having yet to do books on the battles of Perryville, Wilson's Creek, Stone's River and Cold Harbor it is a head scratcher while they instead chose to do a Campaign book on Appomattox. I personally think they could have covered this just adding more than 96 usual pages to their 2009 volume Petersburg 1864-65. Their Gettysburg book had 128 pages. The book starts out covering the fall of Petersburg, material covered in the book on that siege. The biggest battle in the Appomattox campaign was Sailor's Creek, and even that is too small an event to be covered in one Campaign book. I went to Appomattox's 150th, and there is little to see there. Also, the Confederate soldiers were portrayed as having perfect uniforms. I saw the same thing at the reenactment. In reality many were ragged and barefoot as well.A good read all in all but just not much to write about from the military viewpoint.

A Forczyk The final days of the American Civil War does not often get the attention of the big battles, such as Antietam, Shiloh and Gettysburg, but they were equally full of drama. In Ron Field’s Appomattox 1865: Lee’s Last Campaign, the author manages to capture elements of this dramatic ending of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, but only in part. Like many Civil War histories written of late, there is a growing sterility in the narratives, lacking the pathos that those of us growing up reading Catton and Foote are accustomed to see. As a military campaign, Appomattox was a foregone conclusion – when, not if Grant would run Lee to ground. The real story – and unfortunately missing in these pages – is how the manner in which the surrender occurred affected the post-war building effort. Indeed, I was surprised to see that the author spent virtually the entire volume on the military events leading up to the surrender, but then covered the surrender in just three pages. Only brief mention is made of Joshua Chamberlain’s role in the surrender (in a photo caption) and Lee and Grant come across as almost ciphers. Grant’s compassion and understanding of his defeated foe, and Lee’s acceptance of the outcome and eschewing of calls for guerrilla warfare, are missing in these pages. Another omission: not all of Lee's troops wanted to surrender and he had to personally order the 1 MD CSA regiment to lay down its arms.Although the author provides an awesomely detailed order of battle, his introductory sections of opposing commanders, forces and plans says very little. In particular, the opposing forces section essentially describes the origin of each of the army corps involved, not really describing their condition. There is very little mention of the ragged condition of Lee’s troops, which led to the surrender. A large chunk of the narrative deals with fighting around Petersburg, the Battle of Five Forks, etc; this is necessary, but tends to get bogged down in detail that is not that relevant to the outcome. For example, the author mentions Lee’s intent to link-up with Johnston’s Army of the Tennessee in North Carolina, but there is no discussing of their efforts to coordinate operations or what this might have meant. The pursuit of Lee’s army westward is the best part of the narrative and does include some dramatic moments, particularly those involving Custer’s role in the campaign.I found the maps in the volume to be of indifferent quality in terms of understanding the campaign; some useful, others not. The battle scenes by Adam Hook were technically very nice, but I found the depiction of Confederate troops in April 1865 to be far too “perfect looking,” with no torn/faded uniforms. Nor were any old men, boys. Many of Lee’s infantry were in very rough shape by Appomattox, but you wouldn’t get that impression looking at these color plates. I found the author’s discussion of the battlefield today also somewhat flat. I’ve been to Appomattox Court House and there’s not that much to see – it’s disappointing. Overall, this is a decent volume but fell somewhat short of what I think could have been accomplished.

An Interesting Look at History By Andy in Washington First things first- it is not obvious from the product description, but this book has a copyright date of 1906. That being said, it was an interesting read and provided a different perspective on how the Union and Central Pacific Railroads were built.=== The Good Stuff ===* Before I read a book, I always spot check the references, just to get a feel for how well the book has been researched and referenced. This book has none-usually a red flag for me. It was only then that I realized that William Baily had probably met most of the main characters personally, and had been an eyewitness to some of the construction.* I have read a bit about railroad construction, but this book had info I had never read before, probably the result of the author's direct observation. As an example, I often wondered at the procedure for bringing material to the construction front. Obviously you bring a string of cars on the already completed rail, but what do you do with the cars as you unload them? Eventually, if you have 20 cars full of rails, you have to unload the 20th car, and would need to carry rails a few hundred yards- a major waste of time and effort. The solution was obvious, once I read it. Once a car is unloaded, tip it over on its side next to the tracks. Then the other cars can pass along side it, and when the whole train is unloaded, just tip the cars back onto the rails and haul them away.* Similar detail is provided for the mechanics of actually laying the rails- the specific makeup of a crew and how they proceeded. On a higher level, the narrative describes how the limiting factor in much of the construction was the ability of the railroads to deliver materials to the construction site. I had always assumed it was labor shortages, or weather conditions, but it seems that the ability to procure and deliver steel and wood was the major limiting factor.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* As the narrative is over 100 years old, its age causes some issues. For example, the book states that wooden cross ties cost the railroads $2.50 to procure, deliver and install at the construction front. Short of doing outside research, it is tough to figure out just how expensive that figure is in modern dollars. (The answer is somewhere between $50 and $2000, depending on what website you use. Best guess is about $100).* Some of the language and writing styles are a bit dated, and the long paragraphs of 100 years ago are sometimes tougher to read. On the other hand, much of the language holds up quite well, and none of the text was especially hard to read. The older custom of writing out the values of large numbers also gets annoying. Amazingly enough, 100 year-old texts on the Kindle have remarkably fewer typos than more modern books.* Some of the explanations were less clear than others. The section on the financial shenanigans of the various Pacific railroads is not especially well presented-and is mostly confusing. Similarly, many of the geographic names mentioned in the text simply don't exist anymore. Since there are no maps in the book, you are somewhat at a roadblock to really understand the geography described.=== Summary ===I liked the book, and learned a bit about railroad construction from reading it. Much of the language, particularly about Chinese and other minority workers, were far from what would be politically correct, or even allowed, in a more modern narrative. However, I believe that history is best told in the vernacular of its time, even if the language seems unconscionable by modern standards.Similarly, it was interesting to read the occasional bits about the forecasts for the US and its transportation systems. One section describes how rail terminals in NYC would eventually handle international freight, with tags indicating freight to be forwarded to the US, Asia and Europe. It is a remarkable prescient forecast of how JFK airport functions.As a rail fan, if you are at all interested in a reasonably accurate and unvarnished account of how the roads were built, this is a good place to start. There are some limitations, but for a 100+ year old book, it is not a bad read at all.

By Tim Carter When I downloaded this book, I didn't realize it was written while a few of the major players were still alive. The last spike was driven in 1869, so you do the math.The book was somewhat disjointed but it contained some fascinating facts. Among them are the locations of the winter stopping points of the railroad. You see, in the winter months, construction - for all intents and purposes - STOPPED. It's like landscaping here in NH. The landscapers don't have much to do between November and April when the ground is covered with 2 feet of snow.Small towns sprung up and the workers just hung out along with the prostitutes, swindlers and neerdowells. Guess what? In a few locations, you can't even find a trace of where 5,000 workers stayed for five months. My advice to you, if you want a great background on what happened, is to read this book and that one written about 20 years ago by Stephen Ambrose. I'd also look at the bibliography of Ambrose's book and select a few of those texts.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. The Best Holmes Novel By Bill R. Moore This is probably the best of the Holmes novels. Like all of them (and the short stories) it is near impossible to put down, and leaves you awestruck at Holmes's genius. Doyle's writing style is extremely impressive as always, his characters seem so very real! This book is believable, a true masterpiece of mystery literature, and in the top tier of the long list of the great English detective stories. It just doesn't get any better than this. Even the long section without Holmes and Watson in it ("The Scowers") is enjoyable to read, and not boring (unlike the Mormon part in a Study In Scarlet). Highly reccommended.

By Mary Whipple The last of the four complete Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Valley of Fear gives the reader two plots for the price of one. More accustomed to writing short stories than well-developed novels, Doyle creates two story lines, only loosely connecting them. He then throws Moriarty, the arch-villain, into the mix, though Moriarty was killed off in a previous novel.In the first plot, which directly involves Sherlock Holmes, a letter warns, in code, that something dreadful will happen at Birlstone, an ancient manor house surrounded by a forty-foot moat. Before Holmes can act, however, the owner, Jack Douglas, is found shot to death, his face destroyed in the blast from a sawed-off shotgun. Douglas was an American, and the nature of his death and the weapon "proves" to the local police that the killer was also an American. As Holmes investigates, with the help of Scotland Yard, the mystery deepens. Douglas always raised the drawbridge at night, the moat was too big to leap, and there were no strangers in the house. Gradually, Holmes uncovers Douglas's background in America.In the second plot, a group of coal miners belonging to a secret society welcome a new member, Jack McMurdo, someone accused of murder in Chicago who needed to escape someplace where no one knew him. His lodge has recommended that he go to the Vermissa plain, "the Valley of Fear," and see Boss McGinty, the Bodymaster of the lodge there. McGinty and his men belong to a group which wreaks havoc on the community when it believes injustices have occurred. Seemingly above the law, they have avoided being caught, though rumor has it that a Pinkerton man has been sent to unmask the members of the group. Holmes plays little or no part in this whole section.The two plots have seemingly little in common, except that the dead man from Part I is branded with the mark of the lodge of miners. The second part, about the lodge of miners, provides the motivation for the murder of Douglas in the first part. It is too bad that Doyle did not separate these two stories, since the story of the miners, though not involving Holmes, could have been developed as a powerful "one-off." It is a story filled with all the ingredients of great fiction--even including a love story--a dramatic and relevant mystery with connections to the social issues of the day. 9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Easily the second best Holmes Novel - Wonderful Read!!! By Albert J. Valentino The Sherlock Holmes canon includes a total of 60 stories from the original author, AC Doyle. Of the 60, only four were full novels including this one. The rest are short stories published in five books, totaling 9 books. The first two stories penned by Doyle were the novels, Study in Scarlet (where Holmes and Watson first meet), and A Sign of the Four (which includes Watson meeting his wife). This is followed by short stories in book 3, the Adventures of SH. Ideally the stories are best read in order, but not critical. Unlike the rest of the canon, the two novels, Hound of the Baskervilles and Valley of Fear, can be read at any time - especially since they each defy the chronology. Hound was written about 8 years after the short story, The Final Solution, when Holmes died in a mortal struggle with the Napoleon of crime, Professor Moriarty, who was also killed. (But, Holmes doesn't die and is brought back, very cleverly and very credibly, 10 years later, in the story, The Empty House, written 2 years after Hound. Anyway, 10 years after all that Doyle wrote, The Valley of Fear - which is one of two stories that include Prof Moriarty - this is not a spoiler to the story and the Prof is only talked about in present tense. I guess my point is, this novel, and Hound of the Baskervilles can be read at any time whereas everything else is slightly better if read in order. Okay, enough of the background on the canon.Valley of Fear is simply a great read with wonderful twists at the end that the reader will not likely see coming. I would put Valley and Hound as the two best novels, with Hound perhaps slightly better, but better is all about taste and preference. Anyway, this novel is broken down into two main parts, Part 1 is the Murder mystery, who killed...? Part 2 is a backstory, about 20 years earlier and has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. The part 2 story provides the motivation for the murder mystery in part 1. This format is the same as found in the first two novels but the backstory here is probably the best of the three - Doyle now has almost 30 years of writing experience. There is a very short part 3, the Epilogue which brings us back to Baker Street for a final update.The Valley of Fear part 1 mystery the reader gets most of the clues the same time as Holmes does and is more or less free to try to figure things out himself but as I mentioned, there are twists and nothing in Valley of Fear is what it seems!!!! One noticeable difference for myself, who has now read 7 of the 9 books, and possibly fellow Sherlockians, is that the deep friendship between Holmes and Watson is just not there. The first page was almost disturbing in that regard. Watson is more of an object then a subject to Holmes, more like the modern adaptations. It's just something that jumped out at me since other than the Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series series, which is extremely faithful to the original stories, Holmes and Watson have a deep personal friendship and respect. Watson is a friend, gentlemen, medic, soldier, and chronicler - not the bumbling sidekick of the Basil Rathbone movies. Anyway, the story, both part 1 and 2, are excellent and much better than I expected. Highly recommended.

No time to think, at the end i just pick any answers. I paid $50 to take the test, and i regret spending that money. You have to be lucky to pass that test.

By Pascal Tiscali The "about the author" blurb reveals that the author of this book is an *undergraduate* at University of Southern California. That may account for the slightly simple-minded tone of the text, which essentially reads like a tourist brochure. A bit more critical acumen would have been welcome. This being said, this is an informative book that serves its purpose - if you want to get a sense of what Los Angeles was like in the Victorian era (c. 1830-1900). The pictures are also quite good (in contrast to what another reviewer has said).One strange thing that is revealed in this book is that many of the famous parts of L.A. (Pasadena, Santa Monica, Long Beach) were originally founded as tourist resorts.

The Venerable Kindle By Cassandra Morrison At some point in your life probably around the time you first get REALLY interested in what is often known as "The Matter of Britain"* (although Professor Tolkien would have disagreed with that.)You know...King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Camelot, Merlin, Glastonbury and all of THAT.In my youth one's first exposure to all of this came by way of Sir Thomas Malory and his Morte D'Arthur. (The Death of Arthur) which is all about the LIFE of Arthur and Guinevere and Lancelot and Galahad and Merlin the Magician and THE HOLY GRAIL!!!!Dum-da-da-DAH!!!"The WHAT?" asks a Constant Reader.THE HOLY GRAIL!!!!Dum-da-da-DAH!!!"Oh,"It was only much later that one learned that most of Malory was made up and/or re-written ("From a bunch of FRENCH sources) the shade of Professor Tolkien wants you to know) in order to kiss up to a bunch of damn NORMANS (i.e. FRENCHMEN) including King Edward IV (Plantagenet) and his wife Queen Elizabeth Woodville. (If you're wondering why SHE isn't Elizabeth the First it is because she was never a REIGNING Queen. Edward IV was succeeded by his more infamous brother King Richard III whose body has recently been retrieved from under a parking lot in Leicester...pronounced "Lester"...England).This begins the search for the "Historical Arthur" who is perceived as having been a Welsh Knight trained by Rome who served as a "dux bellorum" (Latin for "War Duke") around the time the Romans left Britain and who fought against the Saxon Invasion that followed.And THIS brings us (by a round about way) to Bede...known as "The Father of English History," "Saint Bede."And "The Venerable Bede." And this book contains his acclaimed Ecclesiastical History of the English People. And, yes, he mentions Arthur. His history, however, BEGINS with the invasion of Britain by Julius Caesar and continues through to the arrival of Saint Augustine who did NOT introduce Christianity into Britain. It was already there. What Saint Augustine brought was the Roman Catholic version of Christianity which is a very different kettle of fish indeed.The writings of Bede are filled with fascinating accounts and should be read by every person who desires to learn what Bede knew so long ago. Namely that "...if history records good things of good men, the thoughtful hearer is encouraged to imitate what is good; or if it records evil of wicked men, the good, religious reader or listener is encouraged to avoid all that is sinful and perverse, and to follow what he knows to be good and pleasing to God."

As the 100 Years War ground to its dismal end, England groaned under the misrule of Henry VI and his Lancastrian favorites. The House of York rose in rebellion; and Parliament restored York in the line of inheritance to the throne. Edward, Earl of March, triumphed at the Battle of Mortimer’s Cross; Parliament asked him to be King and the people proclaimed him Edward IV. His life and legacy are chronicled in Edward IV, England’s Forgotten Warrior King.

For ten years, Edward struggled against repeated Lancastrian rebellions. He was driven from his kingdom by Richard, Earl of Warwick, but then he won decisive victories at the Battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury in 1471. For another twelve years, he reigned wisely with peace and prosperity, as a beloved King; but then he died at age forty one and his twelve-year-old son was proclaimed Edward V. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, seized the throne and put young Edward and his brother in the Tower of London, from where they never emerged alive.

Richard III was a good King and wanted to be respected, but the people believed he had murdered the Princes in the Tower, and would not forgive him. Queen Elizabeth and Margaret Beaufort plotted with Henry Tudor, who invaded England in 1485. Henry Tudor then defeated and killed Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Henry Tudor (Henry VII) was crowned King and married Edward IV’s daughter Elizabeth; the resultant Tudor dynasty would rule England for another 118 years.

Dr. Corbet brings the characters to life vividly and portrays both strengths and weaknesses in Edward IV's character as well as the surrounding crew. Nicely balanced and easy reading despite the web of inter-related characters in Edward's life.

It would have been nice if the author had done more impartial research, and fact-checking, rather than hap-hazard picking and choosing. I was hoping to read a biography of Edward IV; yes, this was, sort of. However, the incorrect 'facts' and rhetoric detracted from the work.

Facts not Fantasy - Compelling Read By blessed_book_nut This book is a must read for anyone who wants to learn more about Elizabeth I, daughter to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.It's a rather quick paced read, and ends at 416 pages. It's well researched, and the author has made it as easy to get through as slicing a piece of cake, IF you are academically driven. That is very unusual to say, because most books that include sources in the passages take a bit of dedication to muddle through, and even then, you may have to read through it again to catch everything. This one is actually written in a way that makes it flow nicely, and it kept me quite interested from the get go.It isn't in chronological order, but it is divided into sections and the bibliography is beautifully done. It's a collection of political portraits, going into interesting details about her relationships with those she chose to surround herself with, and those she didn't. I have read several books about Elizabeth, so I was surprised to learn a few things that I didn't already know. Bravo for the author!For being a woman, and not the son that her father so much wanted her to be, she knew enough to surround herself with very clever advisers. She may not have done everything right, but she had heart, and didn't back down from anyone. Her father would have been proud.Like history? Non - fiction? Add this to your list. I am certain that you won't regret it.Although this book was given as a copy to review by NetGalley, my review is written with honesty and without any ties to the author herself. Inside the Queen's Privy Chamber By takingadayoff Although I've read a fair number of books about the Tudors, they are all of the popular history variety: Alison Weir, Tracy Borman, David Starkey, and others. Susan Doran is a more scholarly writer, and the only book I'd read of her before this one is her excellent short biography Queen Elizabeth I for the British Library Historic Lives series.Elizabeth and Her Circle zeroes in on the people around the Queen and their relationships with her. Doran concentrates on the period of Elizabeth's reign, so we don't get too much about those who figured in her life before she came to the throne.The book is divided into Elizabeth's relatives, her courtiers, and her privy councilors. It's not exhaustive, at about 400 pages including copious end notes, and a bibliography that is a resource for Elizabeth scholars in itself. Doran has chosen the most important figures in Elizabeth's life and since she had no personal life to speak of as queen, it's a collection of political portraits.The book doesn't proceed chronologically, as most histories do, rather it concentrates on each figure in turn, and we get different angles on some of the same events that way, as we see how the unrest in Ireland, for instance, effected Robert Dudley and Francis Walsingham in different ways.Despite its relatively short length, this was not a quick read. I enjoyed the many quotations that were left, at least partially, in the spelling and language of the time, so that you could see how English has changed over the years. One example has William Cecil retiring to his "sylly hyrmytage" while grieving for his recently deceased wife and daughter. "Silly" meant happy or blessed before it morphed into meaning ridiculous.One thing that stands out is that Elizabeth was not surrounded by men who just echoed what she wanted to hear. Of course it was necessary to be diplomatic about disagreeing with her, but it seems that Elizabeth was a good judge of character and had many excellent advisors throughout her reign.

Hamby Doran puts forth a nicely detailed and well researched book on particular individuals that surrounded Elizabeth I during her reign. Here is a focused look that is hardly the complete history of Elizabeth I.This works though because such books already exist. Instead this is a solid look at certain individuals that are familiar to anyone fascinated or interested in the Tudors and Elizabeth I. Here the details are just as gripping (if presented a little dry -- it is a historical study that manages to avoid certain agendas I have seen in other writers) as any of the films or the even vaster array of fictional books covering the same period.In a slightly different approach Doran focuses on the individuals lives instead of Elizabeth's. So we get a full look at each person (I keep wanting to say character) instead of reading about them as they move through Elizabeth's reign to the extent they did. This makes for a tighter study for me and more enjoyable in many ways.For those looking to fill out their knowledge of various players in the long and compelling reign of Elizabeth I, this is definitely a study worth reading.

About the Author Sean Madigan Hoen was raised in Dearborn, Michigan and spent his young adulthood touring and recording in several Detroit-based music groups, including Thoughts of Ionesco, The Holy Fire and Leaving Rouge. His fiction has appeared in numerous publications, including BOMB Magazine, where he was awarded the 2011 Fiction Award. He has taught creative writing at Columbia University and currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. Songs Only You Know: A Memoir is his first book.

It was full of enough action and oddities to hypnotize me and keep the pages turning -- you get to live the fascinating life of a young person in Detroit in the '90s; there's music, alcohol, romance, violence, drugs, grief, a peek at the "underbelly" of a place that reflects the mistakes and real passions of the characters. But the pacing isn't too fast, and somehow the book is able to ride all the lines -- it's humble and well-crafted, intense and darkly humorous, action-packed and tender; there's a literary style that is unique and not elitist. What's really made it stick with me this past month, though, after reading it, is not so much the engaging plot, but Sean's ability to illuminate his characters: it felt like reading a love letter to a sister, a mother, a father, friends (and maybe also the younger self). Maya Angelou said it infinitely better than I ever could: "The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart." Sean has accomplished this in Songs Only You Know.

Beautifully written By Musiclover This memoir is intense, heartbreaking and filled with Detroit area references and descriptions of the underground music scene. The family in it is shattered by drugs but there is love and hope running through it. I would recommend this book. I could not put it down.

Qussar What Sean Madigan Hoen has done, in such a raw and beautiful way in "Songs Only you Know" is captured, perfectly, the music, the "scene," the passion and the emotion of a very volatile and important and formative time to many born on the cusp of generation X & Y. This was just before smart phones and google, before anyone had a social audience and comment gallery for every thought and action that occurred in their day-today... when artists had to slave and struggle to reach and convert fans, when they still got lost on tour and had to work HARD for every ticket, record or t-shirt they sold... The era so clearly captured in this book will hit home to many many music fans out there. And they all should read this book.Sean doesn't sugar-coat or hold back any punches, this book will haunt you, in the best way possible.This delicious slice of rock-and-roll history is so timely and relevant to so many readers and also gives a deep view into the mysterious and elusive Detroit scene that many who didn't grow up there want a part of (I know, I grew up there and am constantly asked "what's Detroit Like?" "What was it like growing up there...") from here out, when asked that, I'll refer the asker to this book.
