Why is "The Revised Story" an important book? Joseph Reddeford Walker and the Arizona Adventure by D. E. Conner is long out of print and largely unavailable, even at the finest libraries. However, assumed facts from Conner's book have been widely quoted in many histories about the 1860s Southwest. These quotes have not always been consistent with what Conner wrote, aside from questioning whether Conner was right in the first place. From the Author Who will enjoy reading this book, and what is the book's style?

• The Walker Party, The Revised Story is for readers of Southwest-US history who want a new look at a little-known group of men; the story of the Walker party has never been told accurately in book form.
• The Walker party's story is important because this group of men, on a trek that ended in the mountains of central Arizona, passed through significant events and cultures that characterized New Mexico and Arizona territories in the mid-1860s: directly into the Civil War; through Mexican and Spanish colonial villages along the Rio Grande; witnessing the beginnings of the US army's "war" against Apaches and Navajos; and among the friendly Maricopas and Pimas along the Gila River.
• The content of this book is revisionist history, so I have fully substantiated the details and claims of the book with extensive endnotes and a bibliography. (A reader can easily skip the notes, however, many of the notes are informative sidebars.)
• The Walker party story is rather complex, so I have tried to guide the reader along the way. I have written the book in active voice (except in direct quotes) using foreshadowing and flashback techniques identified with fleuron-like marks (a gray bar between some paragraphs) to flag changes in time and thought; equally I have provided a clear transition at the end of each chapter that leads to the next chapter. A careful reader will note these reading guides.

About the Author Pieter Burggraaf retired as a writer in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Pete has lived in Arizona most of his life and is a graduate of the University of Arizona. He refutes a great deal of Connor's stories and points out many inconsistencies By Amazon Customer This book is a must read for history buffs, especially those interested in explorations of the southwest, particularly the search for gold in Arizona. It details the route of the Walker party during 1861-1863. Most of the information on this subject comes from the manuscript and letters written by one Daniel Ellis Connor which may or may not be his real name. The author has done a huge amount of research which is detailed in footnotes and a bibliography. He refutes a great deal of Connor's stories and points out many inconsistencies. The several differing reports of the death of Apache chief Mangas Coloradas makes one want to question a lot of the historical record. This book should be available in college classrooms teaching American history.

Carter Obviously much research has been done and any additions or enlightening info. re;history is appreciated. However, for me, the book was a tough read , choppy chronologically and more of a PhD dissertation trying to do a "they said-but---" type of thing. Western historians and readers will be able to add this piece of research to compare with Connors account of the Walker Party. I don't see that for casual readers it will be of value or interest.
