In 1925, Adolf Hitler chose a remote mountain area in the southeast corner of Germany as his home. Hitler settled in a small house on the Obersalzberg, a district overlooking the picturesque town of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. As a German and neighbor of the Obersalzberg I own pretty much all the books that have been written about this "mountain". The book of Geoff Walden stands out for several reasons:1. There are a lot of original photos included from the Obersalzberg in 1945, when the author's father was apparently stationed there immediately after the war. Most of the other images are from the National Archives in Washington, but also from the formerly owner of the famous Hotel Türken and from German Nazi-books.2. The modern photos show today remnants of the mountain from the time of the 3rd Reich, some of which are completely unknown (I know, this is often claimed, but in this case it's true ) .3. About the Obersalzberg-Berchtesgaden, the area is also described (Eagles Nest, Reich Chancellery Berchtesgaden - Winkl -Hintersee ) and adjacent buildings are inside, for example, the cemetery in BGD and the "mountain cemetery" . It's unbelievable, what the author has found of interesting details.4. It is a really guidebook with exact positions of the ruins and interesting places, not a documentation book.5. The book is divided into driving and hiking tours in different lengths. There is GPS data and short, but accurate navigation information, so that even people, who are not familiar with the area, quite easily find the places.6. Partial hand-drawn plans that significantly facilitate orientation (for example Bodnerbichl hill tour and Cemetery in Berchtesgaden - you will find all graves of interesting peoples there!) .7. Incredible detailed knowledge compressed into a few lines. Geoff has unbelievable knowledge and also a large pool of books.8. For people from the USA and other countries with the english language are hints for visitors included. They will help you, to understand German parking, give you help for buying DVDs and for finding toilets. I have never read a more detailed Travel Guide in the German language.Conclusion: A guide who "takes you by the hand". I hope, the book will be translated into German and published in Germany.Sorry for my bad English. And...welcome to the Obersalzberg!

Rollefson If you find yourself headed to southern Germany and you have an interest in World War II history then you should buy this book. Outstanding photography, helpful travel and tour hints, and a number of sound recommendations that will maximize your visit make this an invaluable resource to bring along. This book is truly unique in its offerings to those who are interested in this chapter of time.

Fass I have been to Berchtesgaden and the Obersalzberg, and have also purchased many books written about this area, and this book is the one I would keep if I could only keep one. It covers everything you need to know and want to know. If I were going back there I would take this book along with me as a guide. Highly recommended
