About the Author William Bradford (1823-1892) was born and brought up in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Bradford began his professional art career painting ship portraits. In 1861, he obtained financial backing for a journey to sketch and photograph the coast of Labrador. On this and subsequent voyages, he became fascinated with the special qualities of atmospheric light in northern regions. In 1869, Bradford made a notable expedition to the Arctic on the Panther leading to the original publication of The Arctic Regions.

Useful primary source By ETeach This is Bradford's own words relating the experiences of the Mayflower pilgrims before, during and after the trip to the "New World". Reading is a challenge, because of the use of archaic spellings (ye = the, for example), but once you adjust to that, the story is compelling. These religious people were also people -- dealing with financial problems, personality conflicts, tough decisions, in-fighting, and luck (some good, some bad). If you are interested in American history or (as in my case) teach early American literature, reading the whole story from an eyewitness is invaluable.
