About the Author Rick Hall was born to a family of sharecroppers in Tishomingo County, MS, and was raised in Franklin County, AL. He moved to Rockford, IL, as a teenager and began playing in local bar bands. He went on to become a record producer, songwriter, music publisher, and musician who is best known as the owner and proprietor of the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. FAME is the oldest studio in the world still operating under the same owner.Rick won a trustees Grammy Award for lifetime achievement with his documentary Muscle Shoals. He lives in Muscle Shoals, AL.Peter Guralnick has been called "a national resource" by critic Nat Hentoff for work that has argued passionately and persuasively for the vitality of this country’s intertwined black and white musical traditions. His books include the prize-winning two-volume biography of Elvis Presley, Last Train to Memphis, Careless Love, Sweet Soul Music, and Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke. His biography of Sam Phillips is scheduled to be published in 2015.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Book includes dvd By F. Hawkins When I bought the book, Amazon suggested that people often buy the book and dvd together, so I did. Please be advised that the book includes a dvd, no need to buy them separately.

By Hal Carroll i have watched the muscle shoals documentary via netflix streaming several times and loved hearing the stories behind some of the hits and the artists that i grew up listening to.that said, it's important to note that this book is rick hall's autobiography and not just an expansion / extension on the "muscle shoals sound" perspective. the "as-told-to" style of the book made it an easy read and, frankly, heavy editing would have diluted mr. hall's voice (having watched the muscle shoals documentary several times, i "heard" his distinct voice speaking the words as i read the book.)as others have mentioned, when you buy the hardcover version (as i did) the muscle shoals documentary dvd is included so no need to buy an additional dvd.if you've enjoyed the muscle shoals dvd and want to learn more about the guy behind that sound / movement, i can recommend this book to you.(btw, my family roots go back to the south and much of rick hall's "rural" vocabulary is familiar to me, hence my review title ;-)

It's full of very interesting facts from Mr. Hall's very simple and poor beginnings to his current status as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, architects of the Muscle Shoals sound. The book is hard to put down once you start reading it, and the chapters are short, interesting and easy to read with many fun-filled memories of Aretha, Candi Staton, The Allman Brothers, The Swampers and many more. Some copies, like mine, come with a great and informative DVD documentary.
