The moment I met him I started wanting things that I hadn’t wanted before. It crept up on me slowly. I remember a curious look, an electric touch, the polite kiss the first night we met. I remember wondering if he wanted me. He did. This is the story of those summers when we were young, a story about friendship, sex, forgiveness, and in the end, a story about love. Be advised that due to explicit sexual content and adult language. This novel is recommend for readers 18 and older.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ** spoiler alert ** I loved this book By Amazon-klant ** spoiler alert ** I loved this book, I really did. I have to be honest this review is the second one I'm writing because the last time my computer thought it was funny to not save this review. I could cry.I liked that we got to know Georgie at the beginnning of the book. And we didn't really know from the beginning what would happen in the story, with whom would she connect, and we also got to know some other love interests that didn't really work out. 4.8/5I think the writing style was really light but there was still a bit of different things to this book. I think the different POV's (Finn's and Georgie's) were great, a lot of change in the book, so it didn't got boring. There were also short and a bit longer chapters, great! 4.9/5We also had very lovely characters in this story. I think that there were a lot if differences.Jasper; He really was weird, he kind of had two different personalitites. The one time he really was sweet, the other time he acted like only wanted only one night with her. Weird..Dex; He's her best friend and yes, they had kind of a romantic relationship but he was there a lot for her, but we didn't really see that in the book. It was more in the past I think.Emma; She's her best friend, but I think that Georgie is more there for her than otherwise. She has everything she wants, but Dex isn't really with her. He's in the army.Finn; he was lovely, but sometimes I was kind of shocked by him, when she told him no, and he didn't listen to her. There was one thing I did love about him and that was that he was there for her, he fought for her, he didn't give up on her, he stayed with her when she wanted it.Georgiana; she's a piece of work, I don't know how I should describe her, she was different in every part of the book. She was so carnal, but then again so loving and also cold sometime. But we have to consider her past, she had it rough and her talking about her was just so heartbreaking. I hope she is happy with her family she made for herself!4.2/5I already talked about the beginning, but then I really want to talk about her and Finn. I thought that their first meeting was really cute, and I hoped that they would meet again soon. And that off, course, happened. I think that she was a bit out of control when she met him, and he made sure she got to know herself. I loved it! Everything goes like planned, but then after a couple of weeks there seem to be a few problems for her side. She doesn't know how to commit to him, but then she tries anyway, but it doesn't turn out. They break up and he moves. But then she ends up there as well. They meet again after a few months, and the second time they meet, in another town, it's instant sparks. I loved it! They made it work this time, they still fell but they both got right back up. And this time she fought for him!4.7/5The ending is an epilogue, you all know how much I love those! I couldn't wait to get started on it! They were at a wedding, from one of their friends, they are all seated at one table and they're talking about the past, present and future. Gigi and Finn fot married, Emma is pregnant with Dex's second baby and I love how Finn is looking forward to empragnate Gigi!!! And she agrees, I love it! 5/5I liked the cover, but didn't really love it! The ending was so beautiful, I don't know if I would spoil it by reading another book about these characters! I give this book a rating of 4.7/5!

A story of loss, love, fear and summers By Amazon Customer Full disclosure, I received a copy of this in exchange for my honest review.Georgiana is a complicated woman striving for the appearance of simplicity. I think that’s what I liked about her despite how difficult she could be throughout the book, and how much she put Finn through the ringer. She tries, she has heart. She’s not a slave to her emotions, but she’s not perfect either. And as put together as she seems on the outside, she has no idea what she wants. So this is very much a journey of discovery. From the moment we meet Georgie, we’re introduced to a woman that on the surface has everything. She’s gorgeous. She never wants for a date because men throw themselves at her feet constantly. She’s unapologetically sexual and supportive of women even when they're "competition", so no slut-shaming here. She practices a healthy lifestyle (yoga, walking, vegan diet). She’s intelligent, pursuing her Masters, but isn’t struggling with student loans and crazy deadlines because she’s inherited some wealth. She can afford to take her time in all things, including giving up her heart. She has it all, right? But beneath all of that, she’s a broken woman trying to mend herself on her own terms. We see this in how she copes with the loss of her entire family at a young age. We see this in the way she grapples with her feelings for best friend and former lover Dex (really well done betrayal of the subtle heartbreak that comes with the “what if” of first love, and how timing is everything). We see this in the way she is comfortable with sex but not necessarily emotional attachment. We see this in how she’s self-aware enough to know when she’s screwing up, but still sticks to unhealthy patterns anyway. But most of all we see this when Georgie finally lays it all out on the table and tells us/Finn what has happened to her and the things she’s done to make her the ways she is. The author takes a wonderful opportunity to explore behavioral/mental health issues, how you can live with them and how they can undermine you in subtle ways, all underneath a deceptively perfect package. And she was able to do this in first person without making me feel claustrophobic. I wondered distantly while reading if that was achieved because Georgie’s opening her heart as the book progresses, going from the realm of the senses to the emotional landscape she’s too scared to explore. That and Finn's selective POV (which serves as major benchmarks in their relationship) gave me a nice grasp of each character.Finn, who she meets during a chance and cute encounter, works hard to crack her code once he finally gets his chance to be with her. Despite being a handsome, kind and sexy doctor who shares her penchant for healthy living and crazy hot sex, he doesn’t have all the tools to do so just yet. What he needs is Georgie’s trust, and that’s a hard won thing. He doesn’t always go about winning it in the best way either. At first his sexually dominant nature is a huge plus. It ignites something in Georgie, who is used to being in control or passively accepting pleasure, and it gives Finn access to parts of her no one else has, which empowers him when he's feeling vulnerable with her. But he begins to mistake their hot sex life with progress in breaking down her emotional barriers. Georgie is a formidable combatant in the battle for her heart, forcing him two steps back for every one step forward, until they’re forced to make a decision about the future. That’s where this story really worked for me. Every part of their relationship was consistent with the themes of loss, fear of commitment, conflicting goals and desires, the power of timing, and the double-edged sword of sexual compatibility. Great sex helped them bridge the gap, but they needed sturdier stuff to build a foundation over it.A Story of Summers is a story about just that. It’s about sturdy foundations vs. quick fixes, what it takes to heal, growing into the person you need to be, and ultimately giving yourself permission to be happy. It’s about that season where Georgie and Finn connect, break each other’s hearts, and learn some valuable lessons. By the end you get to see whether or not their love is a fleeting summer romance, or if it can weather all of the seasons of life and love. The ending, without giving too much away, was hard won for the protagonists and the reader. I couldn’t think of a more satisfying conclusion for two people who started off as scared of themselves as they were of each other. I’m looking forward to reading what Sophia has coming next.

A great love story By Julia Simone I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an unbiased reviewA great love story.Just as simple as this. A love story where I felt for both of them, and also for some of the side characters, all through the book and ended up with a sweet smile on my face. But before I continue with my review I need the satisfaction to say this: finally! Finally a story where it’s not the lead female character that stupidly falls tripping over its own stupid feet! He does! And not stupidly at all actually, but in a very believable and natural way. This story is for all romance readers, not necessarily for lovers of erotic and/or BDSM genre. It is a great love story, modern and perfectly fitting in our time’s issues, weaknesses and perspective. The style is fluid, simple and yet effective, so that I was able to read the whole book nearly in one take, and I couldn't stop until I reached the end, because I had to see Finn relieved and happy. Both characters are ‘multi-layered’ which is what makes them so real and attaching.Georgie’s disorientation in her feelings and relationships is tangible. Her wish to please the others, to do the right think or say what she thinks everyone expects is so well expressed and coherent throughout the whole story that I found myself struggling with her and encouraging her.I fell for Finn right away, from the first scene, because he’s hot first of all, but also because his vulnerability was immediately visible without ever diminishing his strength or domineering attitude. His passion for her is deep and intense, and I felt it all the way.The sex is hot but also very consistent with their personalities, it actually becomes a tool that deepens their attachment to each other and the reader’s to them. Finally, they are both surrounded by a multitude of very well drawn characters. I loved Emma and Dex, just as much as I could perfectly picture Alan and wished I had a chance to let him know what I think of him. This is a five stars for me, absolutely and without any doubt.

“Wonderfully readable. . . . This is popular history at its best.” —The Daily BeastKing George VI and Winston Churchill were not destined to be partners, let alone allies. Yet together—as foils, confidants, conspirators, and comrades—the unlikely duo guided Britain through war while inspiring renewed hope in the monarchy, Parliament, and the nation itself. In Churchill and the King, Kenneth Weisbrode explores the delicate fashioning of this important, though largely overlooked, relationship. The king and Churchill met nearly every week in private over lunch during the war. As they worked through the many problems facing their nation and empire, they came to realize that they had more in common than anyone could have guessed. Despite their differences, the trust and loyalty they eventually shared helped Britain navigate the most trying time in its history.

Churchill and the King: The Wartime Alliance of Winston Churchill and George VI, by Kenneth Weisbrode

From Publishers Weekly Historian Weisbrode (On Ambivalence: The Problems and Pleasures of Having It Both Ways) shares the story of how two of the most important figures in 20th-century Britain, Churchill and King George VI, worked tirelessly to maintain British interests throughout WWII. Though told with humor, Weisbrode presents lackluster evidence to support his notion that the king's role during the war was on the level of Churchill's. Throughout, readers will get to know Churchill's eccentric personality, his successes and failures, but relatively little of the king's. Indeed, there are similarities between the two men's natures and opinions, but the story proves to reveal parallel, if complementary, lives instead of comparable powers. Only at the end of the book does Weisbrode make good on his belief in the pair's significant partnership: after reconstructing the history of the two men in tandem it becomes very difficult to imagine Churchill succeeding in that without the full support of the king. Furthermore, many anecdotes feel unfinished, or contain British-isms Americans are unlikely to understand. The friendship that grew between these two historical figures makes for an uplifting story, but not an entire book. (Nov.)

From Booklist When we think of Britain’s resistance to German bombing in WWII, the bulldog face of Winston Churchill comes to mind. As prime minister, he not only led the country in its darkest hour but also, greater than that, provided inspiration for the beleaguered populace to hunker down and persevere. But as this author establishes, that was only part of the picture. The full truth is that Churchill had a partner in guiding the country through those difficult times, King George VI, the shy prince who reluctantly inherited the throne from his colorful older brother, Edward VIII, when the latter abdicated in 1936 for “reasons of the heart.” Age and background differences between the two men melted away as prime minister and king built a relationship of trust and respect as the war went on and on. Why this alliance worked so well—for the two men personally and, in a larger context, for the benefit of Britain—is analyzed in terms of the two men’s personality traits and qualities that challenged and stimulated both of them to be, and do, their finest. --Brad Hooper

Review “Churchill and the King is a slim volume . . . yet it merits a place on Churchillians’ bookshelves . . . Weisbrode chooses to sketch . . . a credible account of the relationship between these two men who led Britain in World War II.”—Paul Reid, The American Spectator “Wonderfully readable . . . This is popular history at its best . . . Weisbrode does a very good job of illuminating the bonds that drew two men with such different personalities together.”—The Daily Beast“An organic comparison of two highly flawed and deeply sympathetic characters at the helm of England at her most perilous hour. . . .Weisbrode makes a very compelling case that each man was ‘working against his own faults, on behalf of the other.’ An inspired, engaging comparative portrait.”—Kirkus“Historian Weisbrode shares the story of how two of the most important figures in 20th-century Britain, Churchill and King George VI, worked tirelessly to maintain British interests throughout WWII. . .  The friendship that grew between these two historical figures makes for an uplifting story.”—Publishers Weekly“Churchill and the King is a thoughtful, deeply insightful account of two unconventional friends -- the shy, stammering George VI and the flamboyant Winston Churchill -- who, after triumphing over their own personal adversities, join forces to rally their countrymen and inspire the world in the dark days of World War II. "  —Lynne Olson ,  author of Citizens of London, Troublesome Young Men, and  Those Angry Days“Weisbrode’s excellent book on Churchill’s relationship with King George VI is very well done and will take an honoured place on my Churchill shelf.” —Paul Johnson, author of Modern Times and Churchill  “One of the last unexplored relationships of World War Two is that between Winston Churchill and the only person who could have sacked him during that conflict, King George VI. They had very different personalities and views on politics, but their country needed them to work in perfect tandem. As Kenneth Weisbrode writes, ‘Somehow they made it work,’ and in this well-researched and well-written book, he shows how what began as a professional necessity turned into a genuine friendship, and eventually one of the best working relationships of either man’s life.” —Andrew Roberts, author of The Storm of War and Masters and Commanders“The shy, stammering King and the loquacious, domineering Prime Minister were an odd couple--but they gave each other courage and confidence when England stood alone. Ken Weisbrode has written an elegant and perceptive study of friendship in power.”—Evan Thomas, author of Ike's Bluff and Sea of Thunder

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Parallel Psychologies By John D. Cofield This short little book of about 200 pages contains a good deal of fascinating information about and insight into the relationship between King George VI of Great Britain and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The two men were "accidental" leaders who led their nation through some of its darkest hours to eventual victory. The name Churchill brings to most people's minds his well known and powerful oratory, while George VI, thanks to the recent movie The King's Speech, is now remembered for his long and painful struggles with stammering. There is much more to their story, and Kenneth Weisbrode has done an excellent job of detailing it.King George VI began life as a second son, royal but without much importance to the monarchy. He was overshadowed by his more glamorous older brother and seemed destined for obscurity until, in December 1936, his brother's abdication made him King. As monarch he displayed hitherto unsuspected qualities of resilience and strength of mind. Winston Churchill's youth saw him develop into a promising, if extremely bumptious, journalist, soldier, and politician. In his thirties and early forties he held practically every Cabinet post until his responsibility for the Gallipoli invasion disaster in 1915 derailed him. His fortunes revived in the 1920s, but he then found himself "in the wilderness" for a decade until, reluctantly and with a great deal of mistrust, the King appointed him Prime Minister in 1940. For the next five years Churchill and the King met almost weekly to discuss the course of the war. It was interesting to read their letters and records of some of their discussions. The King sometimes disagreed with the Prime Minister and urged different courses on him, and while there is no evidence that Churchill ever changed his mind as a result of those disagreements, it's probable that they did cause him to think his ideas through again.I enjoyed this book very much. Churchill's always colorful character is vividly depicted in several amusing anecdotes, while the King's quieter personality is also well portrayed,as are those of Franklin Roosevelt, Stalin, and others with whom they dealt during the war. Weisbrode's psychological analyses and insights are reasoned and illuminating. The book can serve equally well as an example of comparative biography or as a textbook on the relationship between a constitutional monarch and his government. Above all, it bears witness to the ability of people to rise above low expectations and perform admirably in the face of enormous difficulties.

By Mike O'Connor Kenneth Weisbrode's CHURCHILL AND THE KING, THE WARTIME ALLIANCE BETWEEN WINSTON CHURCHILL AND GEORGE VI recounts the working and personal relationship between King George VI and his Prime Minister, Winston Churchill during World War II. It is a fascinating tale of two seemingly different individuals coming together, each evolving and, in turn, enabling the other to grow in strength and effectiveness. At first appearance, George VI and Churchill did, indeed, appear to be widely different individuals, Churchill the golden-throated, pugnacious firebrand; the King, a shy, stammering royal who had gained the crown because of his brother's abdication. Yet, they actually shared many common characteristics. Each had strengths and weaknesses. As their relationship began through weekly luncheon meetings, the strengths came into play, helping each man grow as leaders and individuals. In time, genuine friendship developed, which, in turn, helped their working relationship flower. Though Churchill has been lionized over the years for his wartime leadership, Weisbrode's insightful book highlights the valuable role George VI played in enabling Churchill's growth as a leader.Weisbrode's book is a fascinating, compelling exploration of one of the most important friendships in 20th Century English history. It sheds new light and insights on the roles played by George VI and Winston Churchill in World War II. Recommended.

Disappointing By Chris Sterling It is difficult to write about two men when the most important aspect of their relationship--face-to-face conversations--took place with nobody else present to record what was said and how. The author is thus forced back to printed or documentary resources which cannot shed much light on the personality of each man. Instead, he moves off on tangents of potted biography in both cases, whenn such information is readily available elsewhere in better form. So I came away from reading this with little more sense of George VI in the 1939-45 period (Churchill's story I know well)--and that is sad as the relationship WAS, indeed, an important one. The king's backing was vital to Churchill's wartime leadership . . .but we get too little of "why" in this tale.

From the Author It was my family's long history and involvement in California's history that led me to write MY SOUL TO KEEP.  It is a sweeping saga of passionate women and their men at odds with the tragedy of changing times in 19th Century, Southern California. The story follows one family's fight to survive forbidden love - ugly prejudice - the decline of Mexico's power - bitter war - the destruction of Indian tribal society - and the ever-increasing swarm of white Americans, coming to settle their newly created Golden State.Brett Halsey, an award winning actor and author, has an intimate understanding of the passionate loves, battles and betrayals of California's founding families.  A sixth generation native Californian, he is descended from Juan Francisco Reyes, a Spanish King's soldier, who came to California with Padre Junipero Serra in 1769 to establish the legendary California Mission system.  Reyes later served as the first elected Alcalde (Mayor) of the ever expanding city of Los Angeles.

MY SOUL TO KEEP By Art Hansl MY SOUL TO KEEP by veteran actor and author (The Magnificent Strangers)Brett Halsey is a sweeping historical novel that brings to life the romance, violence and tragedy that is the fabric of California history. The interraction between aristocratic Spaniards, Mexicans, Indians, and mestizos -- the passionate loves and deadly hatreds, the enormous power of the Catholic Church over the very souls of so many led to land grabs, war and finally the often brutal invasion of the Yankees. All blend here to transport us to a time when California was formed. Art Hansl

Fine third novel By Napoleon Brett Halsey's third novel represents a significant literary advance on his first two enjoyable best-sellers, The Magnificent Strangers and Yesterdays Children. Those novels utilised his own experience as an expatriate movie star and a TV soap opera regular but My Soul to Keep is even more personal in some ways, exploring the milieu of his Californian ancestors (some of his ancestors owned half of the San Fernando Valley and his great-great-grandfather was Mayor of Los Angeles). It is written with passion. Many years in composition (he was hard at work at it when I first met him in 2005), this finely-achieved narrative explores some serious themes but wears its considerable research lightly and, like his earlier books, is a fun read. His vivid description gives the book a cinematic quality and it would certainly make an engrossing movie or a lavish TV mini-series. Recommended.

What great fortune to sit with my Kindle app and become engrossed in a well-told tale of historical nature. The scope and impact of the story compares well with "Shogun" bu James Clavell and "Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara. The sweeping narrative and character development makes for a fully satisfying read and I am glad to give this novel the best rating. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mini-series in development here!

It worked perfect for acquiring the knowledge one needs to properly go about this exam, especially someone who has no experience at all. First, of all the e-book style and format was amazing. It is so good to read an online study guide and not want to go crazy.Second of all, the information on here was and is exactly what you need to answer this particular exam. Right down to the T, and one of the best part is it has more information and support available to you via online through a link at the end of the e-book. I was really impressed with that. The more knowledge the better, this was one of my first study guides and exams but I am certified, graduate and experienced in this field. I am pretty opinionated when a study guide on this matter is thorough because we have people's bodies in our hands. You are working with different people, regularly; who need special attention and training. You can't be a rookie and do this, they can smell you out.The good study materials to get you through on all levels, is a great asset. I thought this study guide was thorough and nicely laid out. Each section was separated to clearly explain that particular section to the best of their knowledge. I think it is a great investment for those getting ready to take this exam! Good lock to everyone who does!

30 Illegal Years To The Strip is the inside story of Prohibition’s most powerful leaders, who later ran elegant, illegal casinos across America, before moving on to build the glamorous Las Vegas Strip gambling resorts. The seven leaders of the three dominating Prohibition gangs imported the world’s finest liquors on a massive scale. Although in an illegal and dangerous business, these seven espoused traditional business values and rejected the key tools of organized crime - monopoly, violence, and vendetta. This made them the most unlikely gangsters to rise to underworld leadership. But they earned every criminal’s respect, and fate made them the most powerful gangland leaders in American history. In the mid 1900s, these seven leaders stood up to, and restrained, America’s worst villains. The seven prevented many gangland wars and killings. Unbelievably, the most murderous and most psychopathic gang leaders not only admired them but supported them in gangland conflicts. These were the first gangs to work closely together in mutual interest. Joining these three dominating liquor-importers was the violent Chicago Capone gang, as they partnered in both illegal and legal businesses during and after Prohibition. They were also close allies in the complexities, treachery, and violence of underworld politics. Exposed for the first time are the roles actually played by gang leaders Ben Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Charlie Luciano, Frank Costello, Joe Adonis, Al Capone, John Torrio, Frank Nitti, and Moe Dalitz. Some of these seven leaders became powerful overworld political kingmakers. Allied with them in New York City politics was Arnold Rothstein, the ultimate gambler. His murder is one of several major gangland killings finally solved here. The biggest-drawing entertainer in these gang leaders’ illegal-casino and Strip-resort showrooms was comedian Joe E. Lewis. He single-handedly saved the Copacabana from bankruptcy and turned it into America’s most famous and glamorous nightclub. The careers and relationships of the gang leaders, who together would go on to build the Las Vegas Strip, are presented for the first time in this thoroughly documented, in-depth, authentic history of how organized crime developed. It contains 546 source notes, and many addendums that expose the serious fallacies and outright fictions of previous books about early organized crime. This book is based on 48 years of research that began, when the author was drafted during the Vietnam War. A conscientious objector, he was ordered to spend his alternative service in Las Vegas hanging out with gangsters to study the history and operation of organized crime. Barnum This is a very difficult book to review - the author uses the "Joe Friday" method of writing - "just the facts, Mam, just the facts" - short sweet declarative sentences. Which is generally not a style I enjoy - this style of writing makes reading more of a task than it needs to be. However - the subject is fascinating, and the author has really done his research, and by that I mean new interviews, and digging in original files, not just the rehashing of old "wives tales" about the mob. This is a true history book - not some glamorized fictional story. It has plenty of footnotes, addendums, and an index for you, if you are into that type of thing. The author brings to this historical project, for that is what it is, a project where this is the first book, but certainly not the last, his own personal opinions, which he supports with the descriptions of many various detailed events. An example of his "bias" - Here is a quote about Governor Thomas Dewey "Dewey's whole career, as a Special Prosecutor, DA, Mayor, and Governor, involved prosecutorial misconduct." Page 318.The author views the framing of individuals by the Justice System, as the ultimate crime. However, he views the filling of the illegal desires of the population with such things as gambling and liquor (during Prohibition) as acceptable. His most scathing criticisms are for the public officials that sold their positions for either monetary or political gain. This book gives a good history from the late 1800's, when many of the men profiled were born, up through the end of WWII.This is a book for people that will accept an alternative point of view, and not ones that are married to the images they "learned" by watching "The Untouchables" or "The FBI" on television in the early 1960's.

My father and his friends are retired Las Vegas casino executives and they confirmed to me that a number of incidents in it were written just as they were told to them by old casino operators from New York , Chicago , and Miami who had moved to Las Vegas after the Kefauver Senate hearings in the 1950's. I've lived my whole life in Las Vegas , and I love reading about the casinos and the characters who built them. Most books about those in Las Vegas and the illegal ones in other states disappoint me because my father and his friends point out so much in them that never happened. The truth makes Friedman's book so refreshing and fascinating. His extensive documentation that includes interviews with some of the key figures indicates that the other incidents are true as well. Before the hoods in this book built their strip casinos, they lived exciting stories for survival in a dangerous, illegal world. Friedman's inside information shows that many weren't all bad. Because these are true-crime stories, the action keeps going places you don't expect, and these men's ingenuity to get away with things is amazing. Because each fast moving incident took unusual turns, it kept me sitting at the edge of my chair. I can't wait for the next book in his historical odessy! I also found his blogs on his website BillFriedmanAuthor.com to have interesting reviews and discussions about related subjects with other readers.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well researched and fascinating! By NoirGirl This book is exhaustively researched and fascinating reading. Future authors who cite this work will owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Friedman for putting a wealth of documented information all in one place. "30 Illegal Years to the Strip" is more of an information bank than advertised "mafia encyclopedias", the exception being that it is well written, exciting and captures the reader's interest. It is not just a dry listing of the facts but is most readable. In addition to research on the previously published, the author does not rely strictly on secondary resources having done interviews of his own with mob legends such as "Jimmy Blue Eyes" and others. The author gives well rounded portrayals of leading mob figures showing them as real human beings---neither all good nor all bad. One myth that has been perpetuated over the decades is that Charles "Lucky" Luciano was involved with narcotics and prostitution for which he was arrested in 1936. Friedman sets the record straight; Luciano was framed by Thomas Dewey. While most definitely a foremost leader in organized crime, Luciano, at this point, was not involved with drugs and flesh peddling. The fact that Friedman corrects this misconception leads me to believe the veracity of the other information presented in this book. Love "30 Illegal Years to the Strip: The Untold Story" and I'm looking forward to reading other works by this author.

Our Study Guide for the PSB Test Is Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the PSB test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the PSB test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game, then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the PSB RN/PN/HO Exam is written by our PSB test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to ace your PSB test. Our original research into the PSB Registered Nursing School Aptitude, Aptitude for Practical Nursing (PN), and Health Occupations Aptitude (HO) Examination, offered by the Psychological Services Bureau (PSB), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the PSB test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the PSB test.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the PSB test. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams.

The Second Reason:

Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the PSB test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker.

We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort.

The Third Reason:

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the PSB test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the PSB test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the PSB test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the PSB test...

  • Our "benchmark" method for deciding which of the answer choices you should pick
  • How some of the random bits of information in a question often "give away" the right answer choice
  • How to "milk the question" for clues to the right answer even if you have no idea what the question is asking about
  • How to avoid panicking when you don't know the answer to a question- we offer a systematic method that will serve as the "lifeline" you need to minimize the time wasted on the test questions that leave you stumped --
  • What to do about the tough questions that you have no clue how to answer- don't just give up, use the advice we offer to make sure you give yourself the best chance of getting the right answer
  • How to use our brainstorming method to get "inside the question" and reveal the hard-to-find clues and some of the subtle things you didn't realize you knew
  • Do you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answer
  • Why "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writers
  • Learn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around them
  • The secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choices
  • The two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughly
  • How to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take you
  • Test writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoid
  • Why "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrong
  • Learn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question right

Now, you're probably wondering how and why we can do all the things we claim.

I purchased the Secrets file, and I just wanted to let you know that I got a 99% on my test. I just want to thank you again, and hope you have continued success in your ventures. Sincerely, Paul L.

My name is Chris. I used the Secrets study guide for five days. The study guide made the test so easy to understand. Like you said this program is worth 100's of dollars. To me 1,000's!! THANKS, Chris G.

I just had to thank you guys for the test prep! I bought the guide as a last minute prep, I mean maybe 5 hours before the test. Like I said, I had ZERO preparation! I was nervous about the test let alone receiving the score I needed. I read the guide through only once before test time and needless to say, the only way I passed was thanks to your refresher!! Brian

I heard about your website from a friend. I am enrolled in a review course, and in hindsight, I wish I wouldn't have taken my review course and instead spent a fraction of the money on your program. Thank you! Zac L.

You get at least 10 times your money's worth! --When you consider what's at stake with the exam, we believe the value of our study guide gives you at least ten times your money's worth.

This book includes one practice test, but the more the better (there are 2 in the other book, titled "PSB Health Occupations Exam Practice Questions"). The practice tests help you understand how questions are formatted and also give you an explanation with each answer, such as how a math problem was done, or a short paragraph explaining the science stuff. It's impossible to truly study all of the science areas, but at least going over them briefly allowed me to know a little bit about each one so I could take better guesses on the exam. I studied these 2 books for about 2-3 weeks and I scored in the upper 90's on almost every section of the test!

Especially since I knew what to start brushing up on once again, mostly in the Arithmetic and Science sections. It has been a while since I studied some of that material. I had a really good general sense of what to expect on the exam. I take my exam in 3 days and feel a tiny bit better going into it. I would highly recommend this study guide to anyone preparing for the PSB exam.

I have found the Mometrix test prep to be extremely helpful. It is very well organized into categories and touches in-depth on each and every topic/subject I may need to know to go into this exam with confidence. I would recommend this product to anyone who is prepping to take the PSB!What I find most helpful is the thorough explanation in the answer key so even if I don't understand why I got a question wrong, I know I can just flip to the answer key and not only get a correct answer, but an explanation as well!

The Classic Sci-Fi Story that is as enjoyable today as it was over 100 years ago when it was first published By Phil (not) in Mågnoliá Most of the time when I return to a book that falls into the "classics" category, I find it necessary to put more effort into the reading of the story than I'm used to. I attribute this to my own natural laziness as well as the fact that most modern novels (not intending any offense to John Grisham, James Patterson, Lee Child, or many many other accomplished current authors) require little heavy lifting on the part of the reader. They also may not endure much beyond our current generations, but who knows? In any event, my point is that H.G. Well's writing is different. His books are as readable and enjoyable today as I expect they were when they were first published (and in the case of War of the Worlds, remarkably, that was 1898).War of the Worlds may be Well's most well-known work today. It has remained in print since its first publication, and for good reason. This is a book that you can pick up and immediately immerse yourself in. It is a compelling read, written in the first person as the narrator - who is not ever identified by name - recounts his experience as flashes on the Martian surface are first detected, followed by "meteor" crashes on the English countryside, which soon disgorge Martian fighting machines that proceed to lay waste to the English countryside, with the English authorities struggling to deal with an attack that was impossible to anticipate.I first read this book along with several of Well's other books many years ago, and it was a pleasure to return to it today and rediscover the story in its original form, because while it is mostly familiar now from the popular film adaptations, there is a purity to the original story that is great to recapture. It is not necessary to employ elaborate special effects on-screen to convey the terror of the martian killing machines - Well's crisp writing brings the story alive in your mind and imagination. As good as modern filmmaking may be, some stories are still better when your own imagination is allowed to develop its own interpretation of the drama and conflict that the author has constructed.Of course, this story has been adapted into movie form at least twice (first in 1953, starring Gene Barry, and most recently in 2005 directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise), but from a historical perspective I think the most notable adaptation was the 1938 CBS radio broadcast that was narrated and directed by Orson Welles. That famous radio show was so convincing - the first two-thirds were delivered as if the story was an actual news bulletin - that many listeners took it to be real, with panic resulting (and later outrage as it was learned that it was in fact a fictional story). If you haven't ever heard that broadcast or portions of it, then it is worth searching out (easily found online, YouTube and elsewhere). The Kindle edition that I have is completely satisfactory and was a pleasure to read (I have the Atria Books version, which is a Simon & Schuster product and omits only the footnotes that are included in their more expensive Kindle edition).A great read and a perfect choice for your beach or vacation relaxation! Some of H.G. Well's other works include:The War of the WorldsThe Time MachineThe Invisible ManThe Island of Dr MoreauThe First Men in the MoonThe Shape of Things to ComeA Modern UtopiaThe War in the AirThe Sleeper AwakesI've linked the Penguin Classics paperback editions of the books above, but each is available in many different editions since they are all now public domain and therefore even available at no cost in various places online (and Kindle editions are frequently available for very low cost as well). Finally, for a quality hardcover edition of Well's three most famous stories, may I suggest investing in The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds (Everyman's Library (Cloth)).

When written, it was a groundbreaking work with a number of new SciFi concepts, some of which became work-horse SciFi themes. However, I consider it primitive and seriously flawed by today's science fiction writing standards. The plot is single-threaded and linear. The story is told in first person by the main character, a narrator/reporter, who describes what he has seen and heard when Martians invaded Earth. The narrative is straightforward and almost completely dispassionate, no matter how grisly or significant the event. As a result, the narrator seems to be a robot, telling a story that is of no significance to himself (or affecting to the reader), even though he is reporting the demise of his home, his family, his community, his country, and the whole human race! This leads to some fairly dull reading. The second main "character" is the Martians, treated collectively. The Martian personality is extremely simple: 1) if it shoots at you, kill it and 2) if it doesn't shoot at you, kill it or destroy it, anyway. The cast is rounded out by a few random, human refugees with only slightly more personality than the the Martians, and few admirable qualities. The human race is not well-served by any of the specific characters. Soldiers on the front lines are a cut above the average human, since they follow orders and get annihilated with honor.Wells poses one clear moral issue. What would humanity do if it needed a new planet, and if there were a nearby, feasible candidate with intelligent, but less technologically developed life? In history, there are many precedents suggesting that we would do approximately what the Martians have done in this book. Probably we could do technically better, but morally, would we make a similar crushing mistake?I must give H. G. Wells high credit for describing and conceptually inventing (as nearly as I can find out with a brief search) a "heat ray" weapon that transmits a beam of heat energy over long distances, and can incinerate whatever it hits. This weapon has some properties much like a high-powered carbon dioxide laser, not invented until 1964 and now being weaponized for the US armed services.Contrasting with his amazing prescience with the heat ray, Wells advances some other concepts that (it seems to me) could have been easily debunked, even in 1898. Examples include the method by which the Martians' spacecraft land (too bad for the Martians inside), the Martians' anatomy (no digestive system), and the Martians' communication system, which consists of amplified audio sound signals (even humans of 1898 had better systems than this).By now, you can guess that I don't recommend this book to modern readers, except those with a specific interest in early SciFi. Instead, if you'd like to read an H. G. Wells novel, I'd recommend "The Time Machine", which I think holds up better for modern readers. The Kindle edition of "War of the Worlds" is well done-- and free.

Good mixed with some bad By Pax Romana "No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter . It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same."PROs:* Classic sci-fi story* In many senses created and popularized the sci-fi genre* Vivid descriptions of Martians and the destruction they wrought* Loved the scientific analysis of the Martians* Real sense of dread instilled in a few momentsCONs:* Extremely implausible story today* Very boring when the book switches to the point of view of the writer's brother* Not much character development* Too little focus on the actual aliens for my taste* Anticlimactic ending* Unnecessary and oddly placed superstition"Yet so vain is man, and so blinded by his vanity, that no writer, up to the very end of the nineteenth century, expressed any idea that intelligent life might have developed there far, or indeed at all, beyond its earthly level. Nor was it generally understood that since Mars is older than our earth, with scarcely a quarter of the superficial area and remoter from the sun, it necessarily follows that it is not only more distant from time's beginning but nearer its end."H.G. Wells's 'The War of the Worlds' is, in my estimation, one of the few 'classics' that stands up to the title. It is certainly not the best sci-fi book ever written, in my opinion not even close to the best, but it's still a highly enjoyable read. The book follows an anonymous, well educated writer recalling a recent, almost extinctive an alien invasion from Mars. (Remember, this was written in the 1800s, so intelligent beings on Mars was not nearly as implausible as it would be today.) The descriptions and images portrayed are real and detailed enough to make you feel like this event actually occurred, and at points, particularly in the beginning, the book is quite suspenseful. This feeling is never so strong as it is in the beginning, where it is said that the Martians have been unsympathetically observing us, and, unfortunately, the book never again reaches this point of wonder and suspense.I found the descriptions and scientific analysis of the Martians to be, by far, the best parts of the book, particularly in two places - The beginning of the book, where the Martian environment is described and how this environment shaped their evolution is the first of these great moments. The second great moment is where the writer is in an advantageous spot where he is able to stealthily observe and analyze the Martian anatomy and physiology. For me, the book suffers immensely when it turns from a sci-fi book into a thriller. In my opinion the descriptions of the fleeing citizens and wreckage of cities was quite boring (particularly when the point of emphasis switches from the original writer to his brother) and, regrettably, these descriptions probably took up over half of the book. It seems like the destruction of England itself was more of a focus than the actual alien invasion. The ending also left me very wanting and somewhat disappointed.Overall, the excitement of the best moments are enough to overcome the dullness of the worst, leaving the book to be an enjoyable one."For that moment I touched an emotion beyond the common range of men, yet one that the poor brutes we dominate know only too well. I felt as a rabbit might feel returning to his burrow and suddenly confronted by the work of a dozen busy navvies digging the foundations of a house. I felt the first inkling of a thing that presently grew quite clear in my mind, that oppressed me for many days, a sense of dethronement, a persuasion that I was no longer a master, but an animal among the animals, under the Martian heel. With us it would be as with them , to lurk and watch, to run and hide; the fear and empire of man had passed away."
