4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Overview By Alan J. French An excellent overview of the history of Norway. Quite readable. Should one want to delve more deeply into individual topics, e.g. the Vikings, the two Olavs, relations between Norway and its Nordic neighbors, as well as Norwegian resistance during World War II, this work presents a good basis from which to proceed. The reader is also provided with an extensive bibliography and adequate index; however, a work of this scope requires more than one map (and that with little detail).

My husband still has relatives living in Norway, so we are more than casually interested in the history. Learning so much more about all the wars and struggles helps us better understand these proud people.

By DadOf4 I was stunned by the value of Norway's history to it's people (my comment, not the author's). Of all national histories, Norway's is perhaps the best suited for guiding it's citizens on the best human path in today's world. They've been on both sides of the coin and have strong examples of what goes wrong when our animal natures drive either national policy or individual action. If only all countries (especially superpowers) had this kind of background...
