About the Author Gareth Russell read History at Saint Peter’s College at the University of Oxford and he then gained his honours in medieval history with a postgraduate at Queen’s University, Belfast. His first novel, Popular, set in Belfast, was published in 2011. Since then he has written another novel, which was adapted for the stage, as well as two works of non-fiction and several plays. He is currently working on a full-length biography of Queen Catherine Howard. He is a columnist for Eile magazine, Tudor Life, and author of the blog Confessions of a Ci-Devant.

Not only is this well researched (pages and pages of references) but it is so incredibly well written, that I was sad when the book ended. Not a dull or dry moment- the author has wit and a way with words that will make history come alive for you- I highly recommend this book, not only for accurate history and insightful analysis of personalities and happenings, but for the little known facts that make the dead come to life. This is a book I will read again, and probably a third and fourth time.

A history worth reading By Terri This book brings to life the men and women who shaped and ruled England, starting from before there even was an England. For those, like myself, who are familiar with the "big" names of early English monarchs, like Edward Longshanks or Henry VIII, but would like to know more, this book illuminates the stories of the early monarchs in swift, absorbing detail. I experienced many "ah-ha" moments as my limited knowledge clicked into place within the larger storyline, and I gained a better understanding of these fascinating people.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. smoothly written and humorous By rebecca i downloaded this book from kindle unlimited on "read for free" and ended up enjoying it so much i bought it. i'm highly addicted to british history and read a lot on the subject. this book is an accurate and enjoyable handy guide guide through a millenium of british rulers romping and rampaging through their various eras. also useful in distinguishing between myriad individuals w/the same names. smoothly written and humorous - made me laugh out loud sometimes.
