This is a major new history of an increasingly important country in Central Asia. The book opens with an outline of the history of Almaty, from its nineteenth-century origins as a remote outpost of the Russian empire, up to its present status as the thriving second city of modern-day Kazakhstan. The story then goes back to the Neolithic and early Bronze Ages, and the sensational discovery of the famous Golden Man of the Scythian empire. A succession of armies and empires, tribes and khanates, appeared and disappeared, before the siege and destruction in 1219 of the ancient Silk Road city of Otrar under the Mongol leader Genghis Khan. The emergence of the first identifiable Kazakh state in the sixteenth century was followed by early contacts with Russia, the country which came to be the dominant influence in Kazakhstan and Central Asia for three hundred years. The book shows how Kazakhstan has been inextricably caught up in the vast historical processes – of revolution, civil war, and the rise and fall of communism – which have extended out from Russia over the last century. In the process the country has changed dramatically, from a simple nomadic society of khans and clans, to a modern and outward-looking nation. The transition has been difficult and tumultuous for millions of people, but Vanished Khans and Empty Steppes illustrates how Kazakhstan has emerged as one of the world’s most successful post-communist countries.

By Foriegn Devil There are not many books available on this subject, but this one was well organized and interesting to read. Having lived and worked in Kazakhstan for six years made this an interesting subject for me. It is easier for me to better understand the differences in cultures and behaviors of the people that live in the different regions of this huge country. Almaty is certainly different from Astana, Aktau, and Atyrau, and the people of these places are also very different. The histories of the nomadic peoples, development of agriculture during soviet times, and the fall of communism and breakup of the Soviet Union shed a great deal of light on why Kazakhstan is what it is today.

An Important Read for Those Interested in History and Geopolitics By C E Voigtsberger Jr This book opened my eyes to an area of the world with which I had almost no knowledge. While it certainly isn't an action novel that will keep one up all night reading to the end, it was still interesting reading. The "Stans" are so remote from our world here in the U.S. as to almost be another planet. I still have to look at a map if I want to locate any of countries in the steppe region of the former Soviet Union. I think this is an important book for anyone interested in geopolitics and the situation in the world today. It's curious. In school, history was an incredibly boring subject only to be endured because it was a required course of study. As I get older, history becomes more and more interesting, especially as it bears on the situations we find ourselves in today. Perhaps if our so-called leaders spent more time studying history and less time studying popularity polls we wouldn't find ourselves where we are viz a viz the rest of the world..
