He decides to drive the Trans Canada highway to Winnipeg to visit friends and uses the trip to try to remember his time in Rwanda and face his demons. Crossing the prairies accompanied by ghosts that demand their stories be heard, he embarks on a parallel journey between time and place that is both exhilarating and harrowing. Occasionally the two seem to merge. This is his story.

From the Author What are people experiencing when they become mass killers? Look at what's happening around us today. Rwandans are no different to me or you, and yet some of them suddenly turned into killers, grandmothers killing grandmothers, neighbours killing neighbours' children--and we don't know how they turned, not really. In this novel, I maintain distance out of respect for the dead, so horrors are presented in flashbacks. A former UN officer, himself of African heritage, crosses the Canadian flat prairies and recalls the burning hills of Rwanda during the killings, seeing visions and ghosts of perpetrators and victims who demand to be heard. I am dedicated to writing a set of three novels about parallel journeys, since I have been fascinated by the juxtaposition of places people can live in--physically in one place and mentally in another country. I wrote this novel for its own sake, not to put out a message, but if it helps people reflect or learn new facts, I am not going to be sorry. I am passionate about understanding the inner logic of other cultures I also am passionate about battling against 'culture' being used as an excuse to oppress women and turn a blind eye. I am passionate about fighting stereotypes and hope that shows in my novels. I am passionate about classical ballet and still do a class every week. I am passionate about young people and, to be honest, especially my own children and grandchildren. "Professionally, I am an anthropologist and taught at several British universities and published profusely in my field. For literature, I was granted three residencies at Yaddo, the artists' retreat in the USA and once at Blue Mountain Centre in upstate New York."
About the Author Tamara Dragadze B.A. (Kent) D.Phil (Oxon)says of herself: I have a mixed ethnic and cultural background and feel very marginal. Third generation British, most of my East European relatives are from Georgia near Russia, yet I was born in Oswestry, on the Welsh border in the UK and was brought up speaking English and French at home. As a child, I moved to Paris and then to Tangier, in North Africa, where I spent my most formative years. So unlike so many of our authors, it is difficult for me to state presicely who I am or where I belong, though it is true I have lived now for decades in Fulham, London. Professionally, I am an anthropologist and taught at several British universities and have published profusely. But I could not address issues in Social Science where I have found the freedom to do so in fiction. By Isabel Hunter This novel gripped me from the first pages, and my emotional and intellectual involvement with the story became ever more intense as I read on.The British-born Ugandan hero lives in Canada, working part-time in a bookshop and in a garden, some years after carrying out a fact-finding mission, as a UN official, to Rwanda, in the aftermath of the massacres. The novel takes him on a journey across Canada during which he recalls and relives the traumatic experience of that mission, and the two journeys - one physically in his car along motorways and by-roads, the other into the darkest and most painful areas of his memory - intertwine lucidly and compellingly.The author set herself a particularly demanding task and has pulled it off superbly. The book is tightly structured and scrupulously researched; psychological insights, sometimes startling, are always realistic; geographical and historical details are vivid. Colloquial dialogues and monologues are interspersed with fine description and beautifully painted landscapes. The reader is drawn deeply into Josephu's agonised progress through his past, to the point of experiencing something of his catharsis.I cannot recommend this book too highly for the light it sheds onto the Rwanda of the early 'nineties, but above all for its compassionate, revelatory and deeply moving account of the hero's inner journey.
