Napoleon is a huge figure who dominates the historical landscape, eliciting praise and vilification in equal measure. The contradictions are everywhere: while celebrated as one of the most successful battlefield commanders, he is best known for his most significant defeat; while his legal code put in place the principle of equality that forms the basis of many modern legal systems, he is often described as the precursor to a host of modern dictators who had no regard for concerns of human rights; the inhabitant of royal palaces was at the same time never happier than when he was dining with his men on a muddy battlefield. This very short history examines the contradictions that created one of history’s most iconic figures, covering the period from Napoleon’s birth to his coronation as Emperor of France. The Very Short History series gives the reader a clear, concise, and very short, account of the people and events that have shaped world history. Each book provides an entertaining and engaging narrative, allowing the reader to master the subject in the shortest time possible.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. short and informative! By just a girl This book is a great read. I've been needing to brush up on my European history, and what better place to start than with Napoleon? I've read my fair share of ebooks and this book exceeded my expectations. I learned more about Napoleon and France than I expected to. The book is divided into short and organized chapters. My favorite chapter was "an Italian adventure"---so interesting! I was able to finish it all within one reading session. I'm pleased that this is actually a part of a series and I'm looking forward to checking out the other books. I highly recommend it!

The author highlights all the major life events ans lets you know what happened without too many details which is easier said than done. It's an enjoyable, educational easy read.

A short, yet masterfully crafted history By Dan P European history can be either gripping and interesting, or painfully dull depending on who is telling the story. Luckily, Napoleon: The Irresistible Rise of a Corsican Adventurer, is masterfully written by Tristan Clark. Following Napoleon's life from his time in Corsica all the way through his rise to lead France, this history, while short, is filled with rich detail, providing insight into the man who shaped France, and all of Europe. The style it is written in makes the reader feel immersed in the life and times of Napoleon, and provides a thorough understanding of this Corsican Adventurer's early life. Napoleon: The Irresistible Rise of a Corsican Adventurer is a history you won't want to put down until you are finished! Five stars!
