More Confederate soldiers died in Chicago's Camp Douglas than on any Civil War battlefield. Originally constructed in 1861 to train forty thousand Union soldiers from the northern third of Illinois, it was converted to a prison camp in 1862. Nearly thirty thousand Confederate prisoners were housed there until it was shut down in 1865. Today, the history of the camp ranges from unknown to deeply misunderstood. David Keller offers a modern perspective of Camp Douglas and a key piece of scholarship in reckoning with the legacy of other military prisons.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Light on the Civil War and on Chicago By Nanckauf This book is worthwhile on two counts. First, its author is a layperson who came at research into a Union Army prisoner of war camp simply out of his personal interest rather than from academic pursuit. One certainly gets the sense of this while reading through The Story of Camp Douglas. The result is a refreshing and readable piece of work. At the same time it's chock-full of documented detail, not to mention numerous fascinating photos and drawings. Second, it's clear from the beginning that Mr. Keller does not have an axe to grind. There's an absence of either hand-wringing apology or of damning political polemic. Mr. Keller has gone at the matter of what happened at Camp Douglas with a spirit for uncovering the truth, no more. The reader will be able to see the American Civil War from a new dimension, namely, the fate of thousands of prisoners of war. Chicagoans looking to more fully understand their city's history--even what's literally buried underground--will do well to have this very useful reference book on the shelf.

Badly done By Chief There was a history channel documentary on the prison camp a few years ago that was tremendous as it detailed the corruption that led to the horrid conditions at the site. This book glossed over them. In fact, to read the book a person would think Camp Douglas was a four star hotel. Very poorly researched and a lazy effort. This author deserves a sentence at Camp Douglas.

Irvine David Keller has produced a richly detailed account of Chicago's own Confederate Civil War prison, Camp Douglas. And, he has done so in the style of the well known historian, David McCullough. Keller chronicles the daily life of the prisoners through excerpts from their letters, diaries and memoirs. He deals in a straight forward manner with critical issues including prisoner treatment and mistreatment, sanitation shortcomings, food and clothing shortages and 19th century medical treatment and procedures.David's passion for the subject is personified by his creation of the Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation which presently supports archaeology digs in the area where Camp Douglas was formerly located.
