R W Miller's work describes the Vietnam War that he experienced and he did a great job in Vietnam and writing this memoir as well. Every American should sit down with this book and get a glimpse of how terrible war is, yet how bravery, honor and sacrifice can carry the day. This is a great read that takes you inside a warriors mind, and places you alongside him as he struggles with the heat, the rain, and the always haunted darkness of Vietnam. If you can find a better group of men, bury me with them when I die, otherwise bury me with soldiers- CW Standiford 3rd Recon 3rd Marines Vietnam 67-69.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Amazing book! By Amazon Customer This is an amazing book. I read it once and could not put it down, so I am going to read it again. The Vietnam War was very real to me since many of my close friends and relatives were in combat. All were lucky to come back alive, but all were emotionally damaged in some way. My own husband was active duty, but was stationed in the pentagon and serving in a much different way than this author. It made me much more thankful and appreciative of this author and all the others like him. We can never thank all of our veterans enough. This book is awesome! It is easy to read and should be on the reading list of every high school.

Miller's book, 'the Captured Gun,' should be required reading for U.S. citizens who have no concept of the sacrifices our military combat personnel are required to make to protect our freedom. This is as close as you can come to experiencing the horrors of combat without actually participating in it. Read Sgt. Miller's "Captured Gun" and hope to God you never have to go through what he went through during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Then stop and think, "What am I doing, if anything, to protect and preserve our U.S. Constitution - the source of all our freedoms - today?" Freedom isn't free. 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' Sir Edmunde Burke, British House of Commons, 1770.
