By Ian Sphere An excellent foray into the realm of speculative fiction. What would you do if you woke up one day in the future and the weight of rebuilding human civilization fell squarely on your shoulders? Would you repeat history? Try to keep the best parts? Try something different altogether? What if somewhere along the way you were faced with ensured annihilation of whatever little was left of your civilization? These are the questions young Subject 17 (aka Nyxe) must face and she shies in the face of none of the above. This is by no means a damsel in distress, but a strong woman in her prime, cast by fate in the shoes of the preserver of mankind, and flanked by a small by equally strong cast of characters. The story is riveting from start to finish, from the underground facility that serves as humanity's last bastion, to the reaches of dark space. Absolutely phenomenal.

This is an exceptional book that pays deep attention to vivid details and visualizations that extends into storytelling which utilizes elements from an array of genres to create a type of painter’s palette. The hype stemming from the idea of being the last person alive was extremely interesting, so I went in wondering what to expect.Barely anywhere in and I immediately starting thinking to myself… this book is MAGIC! The sensational touch from the artistic flavor helps to develop something that feels more than just a simple storytelling. It feels like you are a part of this new world.Nyxe awakens in an abandoned, high-tech facility underground with just an AI to take care of her. As time goes on, we get to see just how intriguing both her and the AI are. Yes, Guru really is that different. You’d be expecting the common AI-must-malfunction trope, but instead, you’ll be very surprised to find out this, really might be one of the book’s better surprises. Overtime Nyxe gets to explore our history and why the world became the way it is, then even finds out about what she is exactly, which is a kind of newtype human.I was a little startled to deal with the ‘superhuman’ genetic stuff. Seen too much of it and it’s too overused, and a lot of times, it turns out to be the exact reason why a book might fail. Here, it’s a little different, considering Nyxe has to deal with competitors that are either just on par or higher, so this ‘genetically enhanced’ advantage becomes practically meaningless, in a good way, because it levels the playing field and we are not given a ‘babe with a gun shoots em’ all’ kind of heroine, but one that is just plain human, and has to use all her wit, intelligence, wisdom and willpower to be able to deal with the crazy adventure ahead of her.And oh yeah, it does get crazy. Literally into space, crazy. The writing style itself is stellar, which is why I also fear if the film would be just as good. It’ll be interesting to see, because a translation of this book into film would have to also consider the mass wisdom the book offers, on top of the sincere, flowing structure of a prose that is just simply beautiful, and how could the cameras capture such an emphasis.The other thing is the length. Too many novels like this drag on, and I was scared to be joining a dystopian world for too long (these can get kind of outright depressing) but this is not the case here. Nyxe feels more like a deconstruction of the genre, and rather, forming its own blend. Yes, there were some very grim moments in the book, but the message inside it more or less shows the power to keep trying and keep going. Which is well said, considering this type of archetype is too often misused stalely, with nothing more to offer than the same old.Nyxe is more hopeful in this regard and by the end of the book, I was feeling like building my own world, right at home, asking myself questions the book presented like what mistakes am I done with? Which is more than I expected, on top of the highly entertaining read. I felt transformed and whipped into this world, and it was hard to put this book down if at any point at all. I wanted to stay in this world, and dream up the kind I’d create, seeing as Nyxe won’t be done yet.

Short do need a little background, I get that, but it's a short, so...I really only want a quick smut fix. Not bad, but not very enticing. Also, I'm twenty-two and as the protagonist was as well, it needs to be stated that the woman felt utterly childish, like she was sixteen.

Surprising Mystery from Louisa Alcott By Janice This mystery story is not the type of writing usually associated with Louisa Alcott and I was delightfully surprised at the way she weaves clues into the story. You know a character or an event will somehow relate to the mystery, but there are several possible explanations for each event or character. I couldn't predict the ending, though it makes perfect sense when things are explained. What the mysterious key opens comes as a complete surprise and is a little shocking, especially for a story written in that time period. The story reads quickly, not bogged down by excessive description. Highly recommend it!

Not Your Typical Alcott By Mimbelina A fatal legacy and buried secret haunt the widow and daughter of a rich man who died after a visit from a mysterious stranger. What horrid news did the stranger impart to cause the man's sudden death? And does the young boy who miraculously appears and befriends the family know anything about it? Is his obvious devotion to the widow and young mistress as pure as it seems?If you're at all familiar with Alcott's Little Women, you'll understand what I mean when I say that this story reminds me of the stories that Jo must have written before she was taught that all-important truth of "writing what you know." It's a nicely written suspense story but it certainly does not rival Alcott's better works. For a short (and free!) read, though, it is a good pick!

Warfield Before I read this I wasn't aware of a short mystery story written by Louisa May Alcott. "The Mysterious Key and What it Opened" is intriguing enough by the title, and once I started reading there were characters who were suspicious, but their reasons weren't obvious. Now that I've read it, I can go back and see clues right from the start, but Alcott wove a few little twists into the story and just enough to throw the reader off.Several of the characters harbor secrets, but what they are will be revealed later in the story and what the mysterious key opens was a complete surprise to me. A grieving widow, the daughter, a strange young man who shows up and stays, and shadows in the night all make for a very good mystery that is a bit different from what I'd expect from Louisa May Alcott. A very pleasing story.Recommended.

Everybody liked Colonel Gainsborough, although nobody could account for a man of his age leading what seemed such a profitless life. He was doing really nothing; staying at home with his wife and his books. Why had he come to Connecticut at all?

Typical Warner book--but with some twists By Maggie Jarpey Susan Warner's heroes and heroines are usually very similar to one another, as her readers know, but there are always some differences, as is the case here. And she always has some thorough historical or cultural or even scientific information and description included--again, as is the case here. This book does a wonderful job of describing English history and the state of London at the time of the writing of the book, including the state of the United States at that time, plus relations between the two countries. I feel as if I took a tour of London's most notable places in a time machine that took me back to the time of the writing. And I received an excellent summary of English history up to that time as well.Also, there is much description and information on various flowers, which I always enjoy in her books, though it is sad to realize that so many wild flowers have disappeared. Something the reader continually encounters in books of this era is the almost complete lack of government help for the poor, leaving it up to Christians to do anything for them. There are positives and negatives involved in both situations. The class distinctions, carryovers from England, are fascinatingly strong in early American culture.And once more, I'm trying to move more slowly and gracefully, the way Warner's heroines do: a difficult challenge for someone who moves in just the opposite way!
