This is the story of Elizabeth I's inner circle and the crucial human relationships which lay at the heart of her personal and political life. Using a wide range of original sources - including private letters, portraits, verse, drama, and state papers - Susan Doran provides a vivid and often dramatic account of political life in Elizabethan England and the queen at its centre, offering a deeper insight into Elizabeth's emotional and political conduct - andchallenging many of the popular myths that have grown up around her. It is a story replete with fascinating questions. What was the true nature of Elizabeth's relationship with her father, Henry VIII, especially after his execution of her mother? How close was she to her half-brother Edward VI - and were relations with her half-sister Mary really as poisonous as is popularly assumed? And what of her relationship with her Stewart cousins, most famously with Mary Queen of Scots, executed on Elizabeth's orders in 1587, but also with Mary's son James VI ofScotland, later to succeed Elizabeth as her chosen successor? Elizabeth's relations with her family were crucial, but just as crucial were her relations with her courtiers and her councillors. Here again, the story raises a host of fascinating questions. Was the queen really sexually jealous of her maids of honour? Did physically attractive male favourties dominate her court? What does her long and intimate relationship with the Earl of Leicester reveal about her character, personality, and attitude to marriage? What can the fall of Essex tell us aboutElizabeth's political management in the final years of her reign? And what was the true nature of her personal and political relationship with influential and long-serving councillors such as the Cecils and Sir Francis Walsingham? And how did courtiers and councillors deal with their demanding royalmistress?

Elizabeth I and Her Circle, by Susan Doran

Review "One of the best Elizabethan historians writing today has come up with a brilliant new approach to the Queen and her reign, achieving fresh insights into Elizabeth through her relationships with the people who mattered most to her. Doran understands that such relationships were almost always political as well as personal, and her shrewd analysis brings the Queen, her court, and her government into sharp focus. The leading characters of the Elizabethan age come vividly to life, making this book essential reading for both professional historians and everyone who enjoys gripping historical writing." --Helen Hackett, author of Shakespeare and Elizabeth: The Meeting of Two Myths

Facts not Fantasy - Compelling Read By blessed_book_nut This book is a must read for anyone who wants to learn more about Elizabeth I, daughter to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. It's a rather quick paced read, and ends at 416 pages. It's well researched, and the author has made it as easy to get through as slicing a piece of cake, IF you are academically driven. That is very unusual to say, because most books that include sources in the passages take a bit of dedication to muddle through, and even then, you may have to read through it again to catch everything. This one is actually written in a way that makes it flow nicely, and it kept me quite interested from the get go.It isn't in chronological order, but it is divided into sections and the bibliography is beautifully done. It's a collection of political portraits, going into interesting details about her relationships with those she chose to surround herself with, and those she didn't. I have read several books about Elizabeth, so I was surprised to learn a few things that I didn't already know. Bravo for the author! For being a woman, and not the son that her father so much wanted her to be, she knew enough to surround herself with very clever advisers. She may not have done everything right, but she had heart, and didn't back down from anyone. Her father would have been proud.Like history? Non - fiction? Add this to your list. I am certain that you won't regret it.Although this book was given as a copy to review by NetGalley, my review is written with honesty and without any ties to the author herself. I did not receive any monetary gain from doing so.blessedbooknut.blogspot.com

Inside the Queen's Privy Chamber By takingadayoff Although I've read a fair number of books about the Tudors, they are all of the popular history variety: Alison Weir, Tracy Borman, David Starkey, and others. Susan Doran is a more scholarly writer, and the only book I'd read of her before this one is her excellent short biography Queen Elizabeth I for the British Library Historic Lives series.Elizabeth and Her Circle zeroes in on the people around the Queen and their relationships with her. Doran concentrates on the period of Elizabeth's reign, so we don't get too much about those who figured in her life before she came to the throne. The book is divided into Elizabeth's relatives, her courtiers, and her privy councilors. It's not exhaustive, at about 400 pages including copious end notes, and a bibliography that is a resource for Elizabeth scholars in itself. Doran has chosen the most important figures in Elizabeth's life and since she had no personal life to speak of as queen, it's a collection of political portraits. The book doesn't proceed chronologically, as most histories do, rather it concentrates on each figure in turn, and we get different angles on some of the same events that way, as we see how the unrest in Ireland, for instance, effected Robert Dudley and Francis Walsingham in different ways.Despite its relatively short length, this was not a quick read. I enjoyed the many quotations that were left, at least partially, in the spelling and language of the time, so that you could see how English has changed over the years. One example has William Cecil retiring to his "sylly hyrmytage" while grieving for his recently deceased wife and daughter. "Silly" meant happy or blessed before it morphed into meaning ridiculous. One thing that stands out is that Elizabeth was not surrounded by men who just echoed what she wanted to hear. Of course it was necessary to be diplomatic about disagreeing with her, but it seems that Elizabeth was a good judge of character and had many excellent advisors throughout her reign.

Hamby Doran puts forth a nicely detailed and well researched book on particular individuals that surrounded Elizabeth I during her reign. Here is a focused look that is hardly the complete history of Elizabeth I.This works though because such books already exist. Instead this is a solid look at certain individuals that are familiar to anyone fascinated or interested in the Tudors and Elizabeth I. Here the details are just as gripping (if presented a little dry -- it is a historical study that manages to avoid certain agendas I have seen in other writers) as any of the films or the even vaster array of fictional books covering the same period. In a slightly different approach Doran focuses on the individuals lives instead of Elizabeth's. So we get a full look at each person (I keep wanting to say character) instead of reading about them as they move through Elizabeth's reign to the extent they did. This makes for a tighter study for me and more enjoyable in many ways. For those looking to fill out their knowledge of various players in the long and compelling reign of Elizabeth I, this is definitely a study worth reading.

Eighteen-year-old Sean Madigan Hoen was struggling to keep his involvement in the city’s hardcore punk scene a secret from his family. Then he learned that his father, too, had a second life—as a crack addict.    Songs Only You Know begins in the '90s and spans a decade during which the family fights to hold itself together. Sean’s father cycles from rehab to binge, his heartsick sister spirals into depression, and his mother works to spare what can be spared. Meanwhile, Sean seeks salvation in a community of eccentrics and outsiders, making music Spin magazine once referred to as “an art-core mindfuck.” But the closer Sean comes to realizing his musical dream, the further he drifts from his family and himself.   By turns heartbreaking and mordantly funny, Songs Only You Know is a fierce, compassionate rendering of the chaos and misadventure of a young man’s life. From the Hardcover edition.

Songs Only You Know: A Memoir, by Sean Madigan Hoen

From Booklist In his rousing debut memoir, punk-rocker Hoen plunges into the chaotic family life that led him to substance abuse and the aggressive musical style that saved him. A Detroit-area native, Hoen spent most of his teen years in the 1990s trying to come to terms with his anger. And he had plenty to be angry about. His Catholic mother’s determination to protect him only drove him away. His depressive sister’s emotional deterioration and eventual suicide raised questions about hope and goodness. His father neglected his family and a promising job with Ford because of a crack-cocaine addiction, leaving young Sean worried about his own fate. In the hopes of escaping it all, Hoen started a band and hit the road, only to find himself losing control of his mental stability. Astute and intensely self-aware, Hoen writes furious prose with a storyteller’s eye for detail. While some sections about his band’s touring grow a bit tedious, there’s no question that Hoen is a gifted, impassioned writer with a deep understanding of longing and pain. --Jonathan Fullmer

Review A Rolling Stone Best Book of 2014A Flavorwire Must-Read BookA Minnesota Public Radio Best Book"[Songs Only You Know is a] gritty, gripping punk-rock memoir . . . nuanced and poetic. It's funny at times, always brutally honest; a half-healed bruise, tender and multi-colored. Few books convey the fever-pitch intensity of youth with such vividness and so little glamorization, or as deeply explore the heartbreaking complexity of family—both those we're born into and the ones we choose."—Rolling Stone"Unsettling and riveting . . . Prompts us to reflect on our own demons, and how we've tried to—and perhaps succeeded in—exorcising them. The grit and guts of Songs Only You Know goad us into this introspection and stir anticipation for his next book."—Time Out New York"A Kerouac-like saga fueled with energy and ecstasy. [Hoen] chronicles the small audience clubs and cities through an alcohol- and drug-addled haze. Don’t be fooled that this might be strictly a wild ride about the punk music scene because it certainly isn’t . . . Ultimately, it is the honesty and passion with which he writes that overwhelms the reader."—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette"Eschewing rock ’n’ roll memoir stereotypes, Songs doesn’t glorify sex and drugs, instead exploring the harder parts of romance and addiction . . . the reader is exposed to every inch of Hoen’s struggle with keeping his family together through near-insurmountable circumstances while trying to keep his personal life in some semblance of order and keep his musical flame from being extinguished. It’s a compelling, engrossing read." —Alternative Press"A moving, often harrowing story that's much more than just a tour diary of the Detroit hardcore scene in which Hoen grew up."—Revolver Magazine“Songs Only You Know screams at you, its limbs flail, and parts of it provoke a visceral reaction that might have you setting down the book for a few moments to catch your breath... one hell of a book.”—Flavorwire, Book of the Week"[O]ne of the only punk memoirs you’ll ever have to read."—Flavorwire, 10 Must-Read Books for April"Sean Madigan Hoen's Songs Only You Know is a candid and skillfully told memoir of dysfunctional family, addiction, and the power of music."—Largehearted Boy"Songs Only You Know is a truly moving book, full of pain, longing, strangeness and even grim comedy, and one of its greatest triumphs is the way Hoen describes a certain creative intensity—youthful, monstrous, fragile—that is both life-giving and dangerous, especially in troubled times. Maybe everybody has a song, but Hoen sings his with fresh phrasing and genuine feeling."—Sam Lipsyte, author of The Fun Parts “Here is a writer with a musician’s awareness, the deep breath in before a long scream, the cocked bat, that ‘harsh internal music’ building as one of Songs strongest themes tries to comprehend the incomprehensible . . . [Songs Only You Know] feels boundless, containing whole worlds of darkness and sweet domestic family life.”—PASTE “Brutally honest, and yet tender and introspective . . . Hoen deserves comparisons with Nick Flynn or Tobias Wolff for his depiction of a young man growing up in a world of family trouble and showing how we negotiate the ties and hard love that bind us. It also captures (as its dismal yet somehow hopeful backdrop) decaying rustbelt Detroit as well as anything Charlie LeDuff or Jim Daniels have done, which is saying something.”—The Rumpus"An unbound, raw, and cathartic expression of pain for [Hoen] . . . It hits deep."—Razorcake"[Hoen] looks back on a life battling adversity with brutal honesty and humility, and is able to see the comedy in the worst things that life has to offer. In addition, despite the darkness, his description of the local hardcore scene makes you wish you were there (if you weren’t)."—Detroit Metro News"[A] unique literary voice . . . almost eye-wateringly as he switches from mordantly funny to intensely honest, with a skeletal insight into a fanily in crisis and an emerging subculture." —Vive le Rock“Hoen is a particularly gifted writer who writes evocatively about Detroit's hardcore punk scene and decaying Midwest cities of the 1990s.”—Michigan Live“[Hoen’s writing] retains the sharp tang of honesty . . . If you ever wondered what the punk life was like, this'll tell ya, and it ain't pretty; if you ever lived it, this'll remind ya; and even if you don't give a shit either way, Songs Only You Know will interest you.”—Mark S. Tucker for FAME“The manner in which Hoen describes people and events is spot-on, dropping readers into the action so convincingly that they’ll have to remind themselves that these are Hoen’s memories, not ours . . . stabbing at the heart of the human condition and resonating long after the book jacket is closed.”—Examiner.com"To say Songs Only You Know is a gritty tale would be a gross understatement. Equal parts Catcher in the Rye, Rumble Fish, and Purple Rain, it’s the travelogue of a misguided minstrel . . . [stabs] at the heart of the human condition and resonating long after the book jacket is closed." —North Coast Voice“[This] tragic tale . . . is the type of tale that pulls the reader in.”—Mississippi Sun Herald"Hoen shares his musical journey with us, warts and all, taking us into his dark world with unflinching passages . . . I found myself immediately sucked into Hoen's world from the very first chapter; the writing and the stories are so good that I couldn't put it down."—Pure Grain Audio"An astonishing well-written debut . . . a deeply emotional trip through Hoen’s formative years and an inspiration to the many of us who have shared similar challenges."—Book Patrol“Astute and intensely self-aware, Hoen writes furious prose with a storyteller’s eye for detail . . . there’s no question that Hoen is a gifted, impassioned writer with a deep understanding of longing and pain.”—Booklist"Perceptive, sprawling memoir of a young man’s escape from cascading family tragedies into the noise-punk underground . . . A dark, knowing look at addiction, rock ’n’ roll, and the ties that bind." —Kirkus Reviews"I don’t know anyone who has described that terrible yearning for ecstasy and immolation through music as lucidly as Sean Madigan Hoen in Songs Only You Know. Only a thorough initiate of the scene who also had some genius with language could summon the demotic yet electric voice for the job. If there is ruefulness, now, for the way he treated his body, his girlfriends, and his family, he wisely reprises in his book, in neon detail, the fever that once placed him in the same drunken boat with Iggy Pop, Rimbaud and Artaud."—Jaimy Gordon, National Book Award-winning author of Lord of Misrule"Here's what you get when you mix Nick Flynn with Karl Ove Knausgaard: a book of almost spooky clarity and relentless compassion. I bet when Songs Only You Know gets translated to Norwegian they'll call it My Struggle (With Drugs and Rock-n-Roll). Which would kind of get it, and kind of wouldn't. Because it's also universal, and ridiculously readable, and Hoen has, in this memoir, brought his life pinned and wriggling to page, and you can't help but be moved by it, and even find yourself changed."—Darin Strauss, National Book Critics Circle award-winning author of Half a Life“Sean Madigan Hoen puts raw need indelibly on the page—the need for family, for belonging, for alcohol and drugs, and for a music that will burn all those things away (and if the music fails, try more alcohol and drugs). Hoen’s younger self thinks, ‘To achieve self-invention, you first evacuate the truest parts of yourself,’ not quite knowing yet that the sort of evacuation he craves is only ever temporary: the check always comes due. This moving, often brutal memoir records Hoen’s long journey back toward the truth.”—Bill Clegg, author of Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man"Sean Madigan Hoen is not merely an immensely gifted writer, but also a seeker—of redemption, of clarity, of hard family history. There are moments of Songs Only You Know that seem almost too painful to bear—but only almost. What carries the reader through is both the naked beauty of the prose and the deep human certainty that it is always better to face the truth than to flinch away from it. No flinching here. I admired every page of it."  —Elizabeth Gilbert, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love and The Signature of All Things“It's an odd feeling to have, to not want a book to end when it covers so many miserable and sometimes manic moments in a life, but that's how I felt reading this fantastic, honest, unsentimental and finally generous-hearted book.”—Rivka Galchen, author of Atmospheric Disturbances"Songs Only You Know is cigarettes and buck knives, crabgrass and asphalt, rolling brownouts and horseshit vinyl. Sean Madigan Hoen offers the best things a writer can offer a reader: the big heart, the big hurts, the big bad news about the impermanence of life's gig." —Kyle Minor, author of Praying Drunk“Sean Hoen has written a wise and moving memoir about anger, rock music and the endurance of familial love. For Hoen the ultimate redemption is rendering honestly the hard facts of his own transgression, while never losing track of the beauty and kindness that are also, thank goodness, ineradicable aspects of human existence.”—Stephen O’Connor, author of Here Comes Another Lesson "Like the best rock and roll memoirs, Songs Only You Know is as propulsive as the music it describes. But what truly sets this book apart is Hoen’s unflinching ability to portray dire situations while still being generous in his recollections. These searing shards of life are stamped into the page with genuine empathy."—Jeff Jackson, author of Mira CorporaFrom the Hardcover edition.

It was full of enough action and oddities to hypnotize me and keep the pages turning -- you get to live the fascinating life of a young person in Detroit in the '90s; there's music, alcohol, romance, violence, drugs, grief, a peek at the "underbelly" of a place that reflects the mistakes and real passions of the characters. But the pacing isn't too fast, and somehow the book is able to ride all the lines -- it's humble and well-crafted, intense and darkly humorous, action-packed and tender; there's a literary style that is unique and not elitist. What's really made it stick with me this past month, though, after reading it, is not so much the engaging plot, but Sean's ability to illuminate his characters: it felt like reading a love letter to a sister, a mother, a father, friends (and maybe also the younger self). Maya Angelou said it infinitely better than I ever could: "The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart." Sean has accomplished this in Songs Only You Know.

Beautifully written By Musiclover This memoir is intense, heartbreaking and filled with Detroit area references and descriptions of the underground music scene. The family in it is shattered by drugs but there is love and hope running through it. I would recommend this book. I could not put it down.

Qussar What Sean Madigan Hoen has done, in such a raw and beautiful way in "Songs Only you Know" is captured, perfectly, the music, the "scene," the passion and the emotion of a very volatile and important and formative time to many born on the cusp of generation X & Y. This was just before smart phones and google, before anyone had a social audience and comment gallery for every thought and action that occurred in their day-today... when artists had to slave and struggle to reach and convert fans, when they still got lost on tour and had to work HARD for every ticket, record or t-shirt they sold... The era so clearly captured in this book will hit home to many many music fans out there. And they all should read this book.Sean doesn't sugar-coat or hold back any punches, this book will haunt you, in the best way possible. This delicious slice of rock-and-roll history is so timely and relevant to so many readers and also gives a deep view into the mysterious and elusive Detroit scene that many who didn't grow up there want a part of (I know, I grew up there and am constantly asked "what's Detroit Like?" "What was it like growing up there...") from here out, when asked that, I'll refer the asker to this book.

It’s hard to know what guides out there are decent and what ones are lacking. This guide will not disappoint you. It has all of the content you need to study for this test in an organized fashion. There are sections on everything that will be in the test and it’s so well organized it makes it even easier to study it all. It’s nice that things are broken down too so you have good stopping and starting points for breaks. The guide also has some helpful things in way of test taking tips and study secrets as well. Use this guide and you’ll be glad you did.

Sir Julian Corbett was regarded as one of the greatest naval historians of the early twentieth century. Maritime Operations in the Russo-Japanese War, 1904–1905 was never available to the public during his lifetime. As noted in the introduction to Volume I, Corbett dealt not with “minute details and themes,...but a continuous narrative that demonstrated the interrelationship of land and sea events as they impinged on each other in conception, execution and results. Thus political objectives, geographic factors, and the machinery of government all could be seen working together as part of a whole.” Corbett’s work delineated the differences between maritime and land warfare, while also exploring their interaction.

Published in hardcover by the Naval Institute Press in 1994, both volumes are now available in paperback for the first time.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Waste of Money -- Not Remotely Worth $53 -- Buy "Dummies" Guide and Kaplan Manual, Instead By alchartreux I bought this "Study Guide" off of Mometrix on eBay. First off, note that the three five-star "reviews" that have been posted here are obvious fakes. Why? Notice how none of the users have posted any other reviews on Amazon.com besides this one. Plus, "Jarrell Cocl" and "John Y." just happens to give glowing, five-star reviews to all four Series 7 products published by Mometrix. Pretty obvious deceit, here. RIght off the bat, if a company is resorting to publishing fake reviews in order to sell its products, that raises some serious red flags about the merits of the product. The "guide" itself is a total waste of $53. At most, I would pay $5 for this. First off, there is no authorship byline in the guide, so, you have no idea what the professional/educational credentials are of the person(s) who wrote it. It could be the McDonald's fry cook around the corner. The "guide" is basically nothing more than a 143-page summary of information which is tested on the Series 7. Some of the info might be useful to a complete newcomer to this subject matter, but, for someone who is already somewhat familiar with finance and investing basics, there isn't going to be anything new revealed here. The explanations are fairly brief and lack the depth and nuance provided by the Kaplan Series 7 Manual. As for the test-taking "strategies" at the end of the "guide," they look like they were copied and pasted from Mometrix's other guides. None of them mention strategies which are specific to the Series 7; instead they are general, test-taking tips, such as "pace yourself" and "answer the question." Similarly worthless. I don't think it's asking too much that a "guide" which purports to be written specifically for the Series 7, actually offer Series 7-specific strategies, do you?For this kind of money, you'd be much better off buying the excellent "Dummies" guide to the Series 7, plus, buying the much more substantive (700-plus pages) Kaplan Series 7 manual, 9th edition.

5 of 8 people found the following review helpful. clean, clear, helpful! By misslara This Series 7 Exam Secrets study guide is a no-nonsense, clean, clear guide for the Series 7 test. The booklet starts with an amazing breakdown of test strategies that break questions down into matters of probability. I particularly liked the "General Tips" section, which gives some extremely helpful information and tools to complete the test in a calm, informed, prepared manner. The guide then gives a complete synopsis and educational look at any and all materials covered by the Series 7 test, followed by a practice test and a link to further online resources. What I liked the most about this prep was that it was easy to understand, concise, and broke the test taking into strategies and odds. When you make test taking technical, almost mathematical, like this, it takes the personal pressure off of you, the test taker, and makes it an easy, non-personal experience. The test materials themselves are thorough but smartly outlined, and the practice test left me feeling ready to dive in...not to mention the follow up materials. All in all, I'd say a great prep for Series 7 for the no-nonsense test taker.

It definitely helped me learn how to be a successful student. This book doesn't take you step by step to be a successful student, rather it leads it in the right direction. I can't wait to use the new skills I learned with this book in my first and continuing years of college! I would recommend it to all college students who want to be successful!
