It was supposed to be a simple human-interest story, the kind of fluff piece hard-nosed reporter Brett Davis begrudgingly accepts only because his job is at stake. But when his newspaper editor sends him to the northernmost point of Europe to interview the head of a secretive monastery, Brett encounters a man who cannot possibly be who he claims to be—St. Nicholas of Myra. All Brett wants are the facts, but the tale Nicholas tells is too incredible to be true. Or is it? As Nicholas reveals the intricacies of his amazing long life, Brett discovers not only the origins of every facet of the much beloved Santa Claus myth, but also that, when confronted with the miraculous, faith is the only rational choice left.

Review You Will Believe...Absorbing, well-written and thought-provoking. - Amazon customerAbsolutely wonderful...I will have to go back and re read it. - Amazon customer

From the Author About the Book...Concerning Cloud FactoriesEvery parent who tells their children about Santa Claus must, at some point or another, confront the fact that their previously trusting and adorable children have turned into hard-nosed skeptics. In my case, this occurred just prior to the teen years, which in our family happened approximately seven years ago, which is also when the seeds of this novel were sown.Prior to this time, I delighted in the way my children believed almost anything I told them. As a story-teller, I took particular glee in weaving strands of fact together, pointing to the most nebulous threads in evidence as proof that whatever tale I happened to be crafting in the moment was true. Among my favorite stories were the "cloud-factories." We encountered these frequently while driving along the highway, when my curious kids would point to some factory or industrial complex puffing out billowing plumes of white vapor and demand to know what that particular factory made. Thinking quickly, I answered, "Clouds.""Clouds?" they wondered."Yes clouds. Those are cloud factories. See the clouds they're making? That's what they do.""But Da-ad! Doesn't God make the clouds?" my oldest queried. Ah, the Divine trump card, and played so quickly, too!"Of course He does," I answered. "But these factories are built so man could help God. It's not that He needs our help, but He wants us to join Him in what He does. That's why we have cloud-factories."Oh. Cloud-factories. That explained everything. My children exposed similar vulnerabilities when it came to getting them a treat from the local fast food joint--though this time my wife was the culprit. "Okay kids, now we're going to get a special treat. We're going to get some tap water!""Yay! Tap water!"They bought that one for years.I digress. About seven years ago, they began asking skeptical questions about Santa Claus. He couldn't possibly be real, could he?My heart fell. They were too young to be so skeptical! I wasn't ready for them to stop believing. I needed their belief. That's where the magic was. If they stopped believing, then all the wondrous enchantment of childhood would evaporate too soon, leaving the damp autumn of the teenage years as a warning that the harsh winter of the empty nest was just over the horizon."Of course Santa is real," I answered. I knew something about Saint Nicholas, having written a Christmas sermon some years ago where I pointed out that the real Nicholas believed in the Christ Child given on Christmas Day, and would not want to stand as a substitute for Him."But how could he be real?"Reluctantly, I began to share with them the origins of Nicholas of Myra, pointing out that he was a bishop who loved the Lord. And as they continued to press in about the details, I would reply "That's what the legend says," as a way to evade queries about elves or delivering toys to millions in a magical sleigh overnight."But how could he still be alive?"And that's when I brought up Christ's words to Martha at the tomb of her brother Lazarus. Of course Nicholas was still alive. He believed in Christ, and all who believe in Jesus and give their lives to Him are alive with Him even now, as the Scriptures say.And from there, it was a short jump in my fertile imagination to the story here.

About the Author Michael J. Scott writes fiction that doesn't shy away from hard questions or dicey situations. He treats his characters like real people with real flaws who sometimes do wrong and stupid things--especially when they're trying to do the right thing. His interests range from the erosion of the American family, socio-political unrest in the U.S. that threatens to break into civil war, UFO's, adventures in Biblical and Christian archaeology, dystopias, sword and sorcery fantasy, to getting inside the mind of a serial killer.Feel free to check out his books and receive two free books when you sign up for his mailing list at MichaelJScottBooks.com

Lewis and Gillian Bradshaw, Michael J Scott is one of my favorite authors. So when I received an e-mail, announcing a new book, I bought and read it immediately. (I wish he would focus and finish Jefferson's Road, but perhaps he has writer's block about it. It happens.) Absorbing, well-written and thought-provoking. I've often wondered what became of Lazarus, Melchizedek, the dry bones that came to life in Isaiah - surely they didn't subsequently get sick and die! Are they walking around now? How would we know? Is Santa Claus a real dude? By the end of the story, I was convinced. The Author's Note at the end is trying to tell me that this is just a story. For that, I dropped my rating to a 4.9! Be warned, this is an overtly Christian book. If you hate the Bible, you will be offended.

Withers If you want to get a glimpse of another part of the Arthurian legend, then this novel is one you will definitely want to read. Although I am an amateur on the subject, I have always had a fascination with this time period in England's history, and this novel rings true to me. Even the magical scenes seem real; I don't want to refer to them as fantasy, because somehow, the reader can believe that they truly happened. I can see the research and knowledge in this writing, and that makes it appeal to me all the more. The story is narrated by Rhowbyn, a complex character who learns much as he accompanies the Green Knight. A good book makes the world around me disappear, and this one did just that for me.

By Stachia Chadwick Set in the realm of Arthurian legend, this is the tale of the Green Knight as seen through the eyes of Rhowbyn, Steward of the Green Chapel. We meet Rhowbyn as a young lad in the household of King Lot of Orkney. He is there when the Green Knight issues his challenge to trade blows. We follow Rhowbyn in his service to the Green Knight as he fulfills his sacred duties through the cycle of the pagan year. Be prepared for Mystery and magic. This is not a who-done-it; this is Mystery with a capital M. This is the type of book that leaves echoes in your soul and leaves you yearning for more.

Rhowbyn is a most inspirational character and I am hoping that Ms. Chandler will be writing more about him and the adventures he was preparing for at the end of this book. For me, Rhowbyn's story was just beginning and there is much more to be told...

A young man has a ring that influences people, which brings responsibility and benefits of a harem. He is living a fantasy that seems very pleasant. The bundle is rather short but I didn't mind the author adding to the adventure.

He can't read minds so how does he know what everyone is thinking? He doesn't. The ring tells him. But what if the ring is lying?

Alex and Violet are very different from each other, but as the novel progresses, they develop an understanding and appreciation for each other, and they depend on each other's strengths. I loved the banter between them, Alex's abruptness and Violet's more subtle wit. Usually in a novel from more than one point of view, I prefer one point of view over the other, but that wasn't the case here; I looked forward to seeing the world from both Alex's and Violet's eyes. The secondary characters were colorful and fun to read about. Finally, I liked the mixing of mystery and romance genres--that was interesting and unlike anything I've read before. I would definitely recommend this novel to fans of historical romance.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Intelligent, Intriguing Regency Romance By S. Donovan Okay, first off, how gorgeous is this cover and this title? This is the first Secrets of the Zodiac book I've read (somehow, I never seem to start at the beginning of a series!) and it was the best Regency I'd read in quite a while. Right away I was excited to learn about Alex's secret activities. Violet is very intelligent, and her shyness and reserve make her a somewhat atypical heroine. The romance develops slowly, with both of them having trouble in overcoming the initial distance between them. When they finally do come together, it's very satisfying. As skeptical as Violet is of astrology, It really does seem like her and Alex's love was written in the stars :) ...they just belong together.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Zodiacs pull me in again! By Ariel I have completely adored every book in Elizabeth Cole's Zodiac series, and this one is no exception. I've come to expect great characters that are all different and delightful, and Alex and Violet come to life in this novel like all the others. Violet is in her 20's, and has been living under the thumb of a domineering aunt and a drunk uncle for most of her life and would do just about anything to escape them, including marrying someone she never met. Older Alex is cold and reserved, having suffered tragedy after tragedy in his previous marriages and earning him the nickname of The Duke of Death. Alex is also a spy, so that tends to complicate things just a bit. When murders start occurring around London, Alex is afraid his secret has been found out just as he's beginning to truly fall in love with his wife. When Violet's life is endangered Alex calls on some old (and familiar!) friends for help to track down who is behind these seemingly unrelated events.

Carol Ruckdeschel is the wildest woman in America. She wrestles alligators, eats roadkill, rides horses bareback, and lives in a ramshackle cabin that she built by hand in an island wilderness. A combination of Henry David Thoreau and Jane Goodall, Carol is a self-taught scientist who has become a tireless defender of sea turtles on Cumberland Island, a national park off the coast of Georgia.Cumberland, the country’s largest and most biologically diverse barrier island, is celebrated for its windswept dunes and feral horses. Steel magnate Thomas Carnegie once owned much of the island, and in recent years, Carnegie heirs and the National Park Service have clashed with Carol over the island’s future. What happens when a dirt-poor naturalist with only a high school diploma becomes an outspoken advocate on a celebrated but divisive island? Untamed is the story of an American original standing her ground and fighting for what she believes in, no matter the cost.

Ms. Ruckdeschel’s biography, and the way this wandering soul came to settle for so many decades on Cumberland Island, is big enough on its own, but Mr. Harlan hints at bigger questions. Who does this island belong to? The Park Service, the Carnegies, Carol—and, for that matter, the turtles? What is the difference between stewardship and ownership? Carol Ruckdeschel found a home as the latest in a series of women who have tried to protect Cumberland Island. The difference being that, rather than being a Carnegie, she is a benevolent invasive species of one.”—Wall Street Journal“Harlan intimately and expansively profiles a fearless Southern island dweller. . . . A moving homage and an adventure story that artfully articulates the ferocities of nature and humanity.”—Kirkus Reviews“Carol Ruckdeschel isn’t quite your mother's idea of a role model, but she is my idea of an inspiring woman. Her gifts are many, her commitment resolute, her contribution world-class. And boy—as you’ll read—has she had fun. What a story! It's as beautiful as the island she loves.”—Carl Safina, author of The View from Lazy Point and A Sea in Flames“Now this is an adventure story. Untamed is the true-life saga of a brilliant, beautiful woman who became her own tall tale. Just to survive, Carol Ruckdeschel had to become as elusive and mysterious as the creatures she first set off into the wilderness to study. Hunted by her enemies, stalked by an ex-lover, living off the land, Ruckdeschel found herself locked in a battle of wits to stay alive and pursue her scientific passion. This is no Sad Girl on a One-Year Quest for Love and Backbone; Carol Ruckdeschel is on a mission, and she's smart and lethal enough to deal with anyone who tries to stop her.”—Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run“A true action hero, Carol Ruckdeschel is using her powers of insight, persuasion, and personal commitment to protect a wilderness island off the coast of Georgia. She’s not just bemoaning the tragic decline of the natural world that sustains all life on earth, humans and turtles included. She is also putting her own life on the line to save what’s left. Thanks to Carol, there is hope for wild creatures who have preceded humankind by hundreds of millions of years—and hope for an enduring future for ourselves as well.”—Sylvia Earle, record-setting oceanographer, National Geographic explorer-in-residence, 2009 TED Prize winner, Mission Blue founder, Time's first Hero of the Planet, and author of The World Is Blue“Wild country produces wild people, who sometimes are just what's needed to keep that wild cycle going. This is a memorable portrait.”—Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature, winner of the 2013 Gandhi Peace Award, founder of 350.org“Get ready to inhale steaming carcasses, gun smoke, and salty sea air. Harlan has a magic touch for storytelling. He rings out every sensory detail in this compelling sketch of a controversial, no-holds-barred life.”—Jennifer S. Holland, National Geographic writer and New York Times bestselling author of Unlikely Friendships“Open this book to the brine of salt marsh, the musk of turtles and sea breezes, and the astonishing story of Carol Ruckdeschel. From the first line I was captivated by this biography of a fierce and enigmatic passion for wildness, mesmerizing and beautiful. May we all learn something of love from it.”—Janisse Ray, author of Ecology of a Cracker Childhood“Untamed is not only a page-turner but also a show-stopper. Its engaging protagonist, Carol Ruckdeschel—a combination of Jane Goodall and Annie Oakley—is kaleidoscopic in her paradoxes: ‘brutal and benevolent, savage and sympathetic, cutthroat and compassionate.’ Harlan has written an environmental classic that belongs on the shelf alongside Carson, Leopold, Muir, and Thoreau. This crafty, adventurous biography reads like a good novel and leaves readers in tears. It’s a tale of an American hero told by an American hero, and the collaboration is luminous.”—Thomas Rain Crowe, author of Zoro’s Field: My Life in the Appalachian Woods"This is going to be a winner. I loved it—and was even choked up a time or two by Carol’s passion to save wild Cumberland. An ‘undertow of awe’ sweeps beneath the entire story. As Carol’s life reveals, the battles for wilderness are many and the victories are short-lived, but ultimately the fight comes down to one thing: pure, unwavering love."—Brooke Williams, author of Halflives: Reconciling Work and Wildness“Deliciously engrossing. . . . Readers are in for a wild ride.”—Citizen-Times (Asheville)“This is one gorgeous book, a testament not only to Will Harlan’s obvious writing chops but also what the best in journalism is all about, the passion to dig and go beyond the obvious. Harlan’s unflinching, inspirational biography of Carol Ruckdeschel . . . shows the reader her amazing character, spine and spunk . . . Untamed is a unique portrayal of a unique crusader . . . Very thought-provoking stuff, with beautiful writing and an eye-for-detail.”—Society of Environmental Journalists

An uninformed reader can't tell how accurate and objective the story is in the telling of the events and the description of the characters involved. However, it is an engaging and enjoyable read and the commitment and dedication to the preservation of our natural environment, and in particular, wilderness, is inspiring.I am biased in favor of the protection of wilderness areas and believe this should take precedence over historical and archaeological interests, which colors my view of the subject. This book is likely to get you thinking about the various conflicting interests that compete for the use of our land and natural resources, and in particular, which interests should supersede others.

Whether some of the anecdotal stories about Carol are all entirely accurate or not, as some reviewers question, is unimportant. In fact, the stories themselves are unimportant. With something like a 100 visits to Cumberland over the past 30 years, I have heard them all before. Cumberland Island is a special place. The south part, is very friendly to families for hiking, camping, shark tooth hunting, meandering through the island's rich history, or spending a day at one of the world's great beaches. The north part is a little harder to enjoy, and well it should be. It is half an island where nature should be left to her own devices. Had it not been for a favored president's son getting married in the north, few would care about it. Even as you read this, there are a lot of people trying to turn Cumberland Island, this magnificent resource, into something that we already have a lot of; paved bike trails, motor vehicle tours, parking lots, beach boardwalks and all that come with them. I enjoy that too, but, a few places need to be preserved, giving turtle nesting a priority over sea kayak rentals and suntan lotion sales. Today, Cumberland Island is special, but, fragile. Fragile, not because of shifting sands, occasional wildfires, or summer storms, but fragile because a few political decisions could make it just another beach place, like the rest of the East Coast. I hope that everybody reads this book and that every reader comes away with the notion that the special places like Cumberland require the public's constant surveillance to keep them special. Harlan did not make this message explicit, but, it is imbedded in his book's pages. The government has done a lot to preserve our natural heritage, but, they often need help in making the right decisions and we need to keep an eye on them. Carol has kept an eye on them and deserves a major share of credit for how Cumberland has turned out.

Maybe not the wildest woman in America but one of the more interesting women By Dr Muddawg Will Harlan's "Untamed" is a readable and informative screed about the life and crusades of Carol Ruckdeschel.Whiledescribing her a misfit would be an injustice, she has battled against the powers that be for decades in order to preserve Cumberland Island as a wildlife refuge. I had read a piece about her in The New Yorker by John McPhee years ago. To say her approach to saving wildlife is idiosyncratic would be an understatement. Her in-your-face confrontational attitude to the old monied residents, the National Park Service, shrimp fishers, the US Navy and hack politicians (her friend Jimmy Carter being a notable exception) may have undermined her cause at times. Hers is an interesting life down a path few would dare to take. There is no doubt the country owes her and others for the preservation of one our most beautiful barrier islands on the East Coast. Cumberland will doubtlessly need more advocates in the future but they may not need to be quite as controversial as she to be effective.

A collection of six short stories, Vice is one of those books that leaves you wanting more and more! These stories had a little bit of everything in them. There was mystery, sensuality, and to top it off even some paranormal activity. One of her stories, The Man of My Dreams, really stuck out to me. Because of my curiosity and the way my brain works, I found myself going beyond the surface of that story and getting to the core. It really made me think.Vice was filled with the signature elements of passion, seduction, and sensuality--all the things that we have come to expect from this author. I also see the growth in her writing. Trinity stepped out of the box with this collection of stories and tried something new with her pen--giving us a whole lot of new characters to fall in love with. So, if you have not read any of this authors work....you are missing out. Do yourself a favor and get acquainted with her pen. You will not regret it!!Ready for the next one!!!

I didn't know what to expect from one story to the next and that is the beauty of short stories. Although the stories are short, Trinity Wise still brings the same heat! My favorite are "The Man of My Dreams" and "Thundersnow" because of the sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal twist. I would love to see how Wise would freak a full-length novel using the basis of these two stories. I was a bit shocked to discover Snow's background as well as her connection to Gabriel, from the Washington Brothers series, I definitely didn't see that coming. Great read!
