More than the Lincoln Highway By Amazon Customer Effie Gladding and her husband Tom crossed the U.S. west to east in 1914; Mrs. Gladding says almost nothing about herself or her husband. She also says little about the automotive or mechanical details of the drive. Only in the last paragraph does the reader learn that they drove a Studebaker to Denver and a Franklin on to New York. She tells of the countryside and people met along the way. The couple was interested in higher education and did not let a college or university campus along the way go unexplored.The title is misleading. The first hundred pages of the book are an account of a grand loop through California; I found this the most interesting part of the book. The California she saw has vanished forever. At the other end of their journey they make a loop southwards to Virginia and Maryland before ending their travels.Worthwhile as one of the early accounts of driving the Lincoln Highway and for the account of driving the length of California and back.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wrong book for me By Curator The book was not what I expected. It may be good in its own approach, each of us finds what we need in a book. I was looking for the experience of the journey, this book was about what was seen. A valid point of view just not what I was looking for. This is the difficulty with buying a book on line, there is only a short blurb to read and decide do I want to buy this book?. I could return it but when I pay shipping both ways there would not be enough left over to buy a coke.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. 100 years of the Lincoln Highway! By Phil Burge This book is quite readable considering its age.However I would not read it again. The author spends far too much of her time discussing her trip, much of it unconnected to the highway itself.It is interesting to compare the hardships of the times with the advances made in such a relatively small time period. now we have other problems related to the sheer volume of traffic.If you are interested in the Lincoln Highway i would still read it but be aware of its shortcomings.
