4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Piracy on land By Chairman I enjoyed this book despite its flaws. It is a very informative and balanced account of an era which has not been well explored before. It's written up from family papers and other contemporary sources so it has a sense of humanity and honesty. It doesn't flinch from describing the follies and inhumanities of the era and the driving greed of 19th century laissez-faire capitalism.It's flaws are mostly of the editing variety. "Journalese" language, overlong and repetitive sections as well as grammatical errors are frequent. And in Chapter 6 Andrew Jackson and (the not yet born Stonewall Jackson) are confused. However none of these flaws has prevented me from recommending this book to my interested friends.

Although it covers familiar ground, I learned a lot of details about people and events that I did not know. The device of following the life and times (rather loosely )of a single individual who is sometimes at the center of events and sometimes not creates a sprawling story which may be difficult for some readers, but stick with it for a rewarding read.
