Between 1864 and 1870 four nations fought in an extraordinarily bloody war - the largest in the history of South America. The powerhouses Argentina and Brazil alongside tiny Uruguay on one side, and the small but increasingly-powerful Paraguay on the other, fought a conflict that was almost contemporary with the American Civil War and Franco-Prussian War, and rivalled their very high casualty rates. The aftermath of the war saw defeated Paraguay's territory diminished, its total population reduced by a staggering 70 per cent, and its economy ruined for generations, while victorious Brazil was established as the predominant military power on the continent. Despite the extraordinary ferocity of the fighting and the significant historical consequences thereafter, little has been published in English on a war that shaped the political map of Latin America to this day.

This title book in some crucial gaps by telling the story of the men who fought on both sides, using contemporary paintings, prints, and rare early photographs combined with detailed research and engaging analysis.

The text is superb, very well written and easy to read. It contains a lot of detailed information and interesting research. The author is clearly a skilled expert, with a fantastic style of writing. All the causes and main events of the war are described with great detail and with the help of some excellent maps, probably the best you will ever find on this conflict. There is also a detailed order of battle for 1st Tuyuti. This is the first book I read written by Esposito, but I have to say that he is probably one of the best authors who have ever worked for Osprey. The selection of black and white pictures is also very good, with many line drawings of uniforms adding uniformologic details to the 8 colour plates. The plates are absolutely stunning: every detail is perfect and they are a triumph of colors and of different styles of military dress. As a History teacher at the University, I found no single mistake in the text or in the plates. Do not consider at all the previous review dealing with racial issues: it is totally wrong and clearly written by an ignorant. If you just confront faces painted in the color plates with those in the contemporary photos reproduced in the book, you will see that they are the same and thus perfectly correct. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in South American military history, especially teachers, wargamers and modellers. I hope Osprey will have other books written by this new author, personally I'll follow his productions. There are many other Latin American conflicts to be covered and with this author Osprey has the potential to publish many other masterpieces like this.Giuseppe Rava has done an excellent job: I think that the quality of the plates in this book was far superior from that of the usual Ancient titles illustrated for D'Amato. After more than ten years, finally this book has arrived!

After their awful book on the Chaco War I approached buying this book with some trepidation, but I was pleasantly surprised. The plates are good and the synopsis of the War is short but well done. And there are useful maps thank goodness.I would recommend this to anyone interested in this very interesting War, expert or novice.

This is for some one who has never heard of the conflict or has only a brief acquaintance with this bloody war. Long time researchers will find nothing new. The full nuance and intricate details of the war are hard to capture in 48 pages. However, the author does a pretty good of reproducing the details of the uniforms, based on the the standard sources of information available, and the drawings and paintings are pretty good. I hope sparks interest in further exploration of the wars in South America.
