It was 1968 and Robert Hartley was on his first combat mission in Vietnam as copilot of a helicopter gunship. As he and his platoon leader flew over the A Shau Valley, a Chinook helicopter engulfed in flames suddenly came into view. Hartley noticed tiny black smoking objects exiting the tail ramp of the aircraft. Seconds later, he realized those objects were men escaping the flames and plunging to their deaths. It was in that moment that he silently wondered, “How the hell did I get here?”
Mr. Hartley was still wet behind the ears when he was tossed into the cauldron of America’s most unpopular war as an attack helicopter gunship pilot. As he shares a gripping, birds-eye view of battles that took him from the Demilitarized Zone in the north to the Mekong Delta in the south, Mr. Hartley compellingly details how he learned to rely on his superior training and equipment to follow through with his mission to kill the enemy and save the lives of his fellow soldiers below.
Gunship Pilot provides an unforgettable glimpse into two combat tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot soaring high above rice paddies and jungles attempts to fulfill his duty of protecting America’s warriors on the ground.

Mr. Hartley picks up the narrative after he completed training and qualification and has the reader in the thick of the battlefield from the very first paragraph. Without using objectionable language and without accosting the reader with gratuitous word pictures of the carnage of war, he lets the reader know just how ugly things were in the Vietnam conflict. I'm thankful for men like Mr. Hartley who served well and have provided us with a written record of their experiences.
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A sober account. By Capt Bob This is a straight forward telling of the author's first hand experience as a Army helicopter pilot, mostly flying gunships, or armed helicopters. As in other books written many years after the fact, the author is quick to point out that this telling is as he remembers it. Flying gunships in combat is often not what the reader might assume and reading this account will enlighten you. It is not an omnipotent platform on high from which you easily rain death upon the mere mortal enemy below. Even the guns get shot down. The writing is workman like, but readable and the story flows from beginning to end. One odd quirk is that the author will sometimes self consciously warn the reader of about to be revealed horror, just in case the reader might find it disturbing. It would seem that the writer found it disturbing in the remembrance and assumes the reader may too, though any reader who picks up a book about war, well, you can see where I'm going with this. This is a sober account of a very dangerous occupation and should be instructive to anyone thinking about a career in Army flying.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Book from the Perspective of a Cobra Pilot in Vietnam By JB Mr. Hartley brings you along for the ride as a Cobra pilot in Vietnam. His account of two combat tours flying Cobras gives the reader the unique perspective of the gunship pilot. It's a great read written in a style that lets you be a part of his experience. As a bonus, Mr Hartley appears to have answered the question of who is tougher, Rangers or Green Berets. But you'll have to read Chapter 19 to get the answer. Hats off to CW4 Hartley and all those who served in Vietnam.
