3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Sound of Silver is beautiful By In the Bookcase Rachelle Rea's second book, The Sound of Silver, is absolutely perfect. It's cozy-time-in-your-nearest-book-nook PERFECT. The story is set at a steady pace of things to laugh at and to cry over, as we watch our favorite heroine and hero (that's Gwyn and Dirk, if you somehow missed Book 1!) try to keep their love afloat amidst the daily turmoil.In the mid-1500s, a religious war wages on between the Catholics and Protestants all throughout Europe. Within this dramatic time period, our story unfolds in England as the two lovers are torn apart by matters now uncontrollable; matters of murder, double-crossing, and tender devotion. How can Gwyn and Dirk's love survive or ever progress under such hardships?This book has such a sweet and fragile romance (or perhaps a couple of romances, but I shouldn't tell more), that the reader can't help but root for. The underlying spiritual themes are fantastic with Gwyn and Dirk's faith in God and hope for each other being the only elements still holding them together..."I drew a deep breath. I had an old soul, Anders said. I was wise. Then why had I done such a despicable thing to the man I loved? I was not wise. I was foolish. The most foolish girl alive." Time and again, I just couldn't get over how well her characters spoke in the language of the time -- the phrasing of a sentence giving the reader more insight into the story. And although the vocabulary retains the right kind of time authenticity, there's no Shakespearean terminology, I promise (it's still in the English we know and love!).It was also such a pleasant surprise for me that many of the characters from Book 1 (The Sound of Diamonds) returned for the sequel -- Captain Tudder, Reverend Joseph, and others. Each of these were endearing the first time I met them, although I hadn't expected to see them again quite so soon. Miss Rea fleshes out her characters well, making you want to learn more about these people that come alive from her writing."Sometimes God calls us to walk in circles, eh? The Sound of Silver is Likable By BookGrace The second book in Rachelle Rea's "Steadfast Love" series takes us further on the journey of Gwyn- an orphaned noblewoman- and Dirk- a condemned nobleman. And as I think on it, I've mixed feelings for this story. My positive thoughts for this book is that one, I think it is a well-written. Secondly, it shows the light of Christianity that some Christian fiction novels seems to lack. While the characters are not perfect, their stories of trying to do what's right and giving what is important to them to God, is inspiring. I liked this, and the story had me thinking. I also enjoyed some of the humor, and the ending was unexpected and left me curious as to what will happen next. But, as I've hinted, there were some things that kept me from absolutely loving this tale, one of them being I did not connect well with the two main characters. Yes, things about them and their circumstances are relate-able, but I just wasn't ever fully connected to either of them. I also kind of found some of Gwyn and Dirk's actions during their romance, like when they're separated, to be on the dramatic side, especially since they hadn't known each other very long. I liked some of the romance, so I'm not bashing it. I just felt like their feelings developed too quickly, and couldn't fully fathom why they were as devastated to be apart as they were. But that's the case with many romance novels I've read and still over all liked, like this one. So again, while this book wasn't my personal favorite read, it was still a likable book and one that I think will be enjoyable to most readers who like stories with a good Christian message, romance books, and tales that take place during the 16th century. I give "The Sound of Silver" a rating of four, and recommend for mature teens and adults. I also think that you should first read the book before it, "The Sound of Diamonds," to get the full enjoyment of this tale.*Thanks to the author for a free e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I also hated one of the characters so much…but I’ll get there in a second. I gotta make sure this all makes sense so one thing at a time.So, I loved this book a lot! The feel of it was very very different compared to book one as there was a lot less action and this focused a lot on the emotional journeys of the wonderful characters Rachelle has crafted but even though there was a lot less action I was very pleased. (The romance novel loving side of me adored this book a lot for the reason that is ROMANCE The Sound of Silver (The Steadfast Love Series Book 2), by Rachelle Rea
