A Fresh Approach By Dave_42 In reading early Booth Tarkington it was apparent that he had used and reused several themes changing only slightly the viewpoint in which it was told or a minor change to the circumstances in the stories. That is not the case with "The Guest of Quesnay" which was originally serialized in "Everybody's Magazine" between November of 1907 and April of 1908. Tarkington moves the story out of Indiana, and more importantly moves away from the good man up against the bad world theme which had become much too repetitive.The scene of the action moves to Europe, where Tarkington had based a couple of his shorter novels ("Monsieur Beaucaire", and "His Own People") though this story isn't anything like those. The story is told by an American who is living in France and who dabbles at painting. The story is one which is cleverly crafted, dealing with the narrators, friends, acquaintances, and the famous and/or notorious figures which exist for purposes of the story. While Tarkington probably gives too many hints as to where his story is going and the surprises along the way, as he often did, it is not nearly as transparent a story as many of his others. That, along with it not having the same basic theme makes this one an interesting read and one of his books to read if you are interested in his best works.Of the novels which he had written up to this point, I would rank this one second only to "The Two Vanrevels", and I would also consider his collection of short fiction based on his political career "In The Arena" to be slightly superior to this work. This would be the last novel for Booth Tarkington for several years, until "The Flirt" which was published in December through February of 1912-1913. In the interim, he published a shorter work titled "Beasley's Christmas Party" and a couple of plays titled "The Man from Home" and "Beauty and the Jacobin".

At the dawn of the 1700s the Natchez viewed the first Francophones in the Lower Mississippi Valley as potential inductees to their chiefdom. This mistaken perception lulled them into permitting these outsiders to settle among them. Within two decades conditions in Natchez Country had taken a turn for the worse. The trickle of wayfarers had given way to a torrent of colonists (and their enslaved Africans) who refused to recognize the Natchez’s hierarchy. These newcomers threatened to seize key authority-generating features of Natchez Country: mounds, a plaza, and a temple. This threat inspired these Indians to turn to a recent import―racial categories―to reestablish social order. They began to call themselves “red men” to reunite their polity and to distance themselves from the “blacks” and “whites” into which their neighbors divided themselves. After refashioning their identity, they launched an attack that destroyed the nearby colonial settlements. Their 1729 assault began a two-year war that resulted in the death or enslavement of most of the Natchez people.

In Natchez Country, George Edward Milne provides the most comprehensive history of the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Natchez to date. From La Salle’s first encounter with what would become Louisiana to the ultimate dispersal of the Natchez by the close of the 1730s, Milne also analyzes the ways in which French attitudes about race and slavery influenced native North American Indians in the vicinity of French colonial settlements on the Mississippi River and how Native Americans in turn adopted and resisted colonial ideology.

Professor Milne has depicted the similarities, differences, and conflicts between the peoples of the region well. This is a great read for anyone interested in learning about the complexities of this region in an uncomplicated way. This book details how racially diverse this region was and this book helps bridge the gaps in understanding the role of the French in settling North America. Also, Milne effectively demonstrates how interconnected, but also disconnected in some ways, that the relationships, alliances, and allegiances were within the region. This work is intellectual but comprehensive; I could see undergraduate, as well as graduate students, taking an interest in and understanding this work. Personally, I would have liked to have this book on my reading list as a history major because it combines many elements such as race, culture, and worldly events, which are all part of the vast amount of historical studies that historians embrace. I certainly look forward to any other works that Professor Milne publishes in the future!

31 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Great Insight into Edward I's Life By Robert P. Mills The Good:DETAIL: This book has been well-researched and is engaging to read. It is not easy to do this when writing about medieval historical figures, but Morris almost makes it look easy. It's all fine and good to see Edward I portrayed in Braveheart and come away with the idea that he was a ruthless monarch, but if you want to learn more about this ruler - how complicated his life was, how much he devoted himself to religion, family, and to uniting Britain - this is a great book to examine.STORYTELLING: I learned loads of useful facts and stories about Edward in this book. It was interesting to see how many times he almost died young: Crusade, fall from collapsing floor in a cathedral, illness, etc. I especially enjoyed the chapter about Edward using the Arthurian legend and staging a reburial of King Arthur to prop up his throne. Great insight into medieval propaganda and maintaining one's power through the use of myth and legend. Most of the time, it's good, highly-interesting history to read.OVERALL: I think Edward could just as easily be called the Hammer of the Welsh in addition to the effigy on his tomb: HAMMER OF THE SCOTS. There's a lot of compelling, little-known history in this book and it's worth telling.The Not-So-Good:1) Some grammatical errors, especially in the first 1/3 of the book. Try to overlook these.2) A bit dry sometimes. This is not quite an exhaustive history, but there are sections where you'll find yourself wishing Morris would move on to something else. The book is written chronologically, which is a great strength, but there are inevitably going to be a few dry spells. This is especially so if you're not already familiar with some of the history from that period or with English geography.3) Although I think it is good that Morris tries not to judge Edward, I get the feeling that he's a bit apologetic toward Edward's often violent behavior. True, he was a man of his time, but a lot of people (innocent and otherwise) were killed because of this man maintaining and expanding his power. It shows when nobles were starting to get restless with all the war Edward brought. That said, Morris still provides the history of Edward's ruthlessness and should be applauded for doing that. The apologetic attitude might come from the fact that his sources are the king's scriveners.4) Did those gloves on the cover come from Home Depot?

67 of 74 people found the following review helpful. Engaging but not necessarily in the right way By Forbes G. I preferred Michael Prestwich's biography of Edward I to this one. Not because it was more thoroughly researched (It was), and this version is much more personable in imparting the information. The problem arises in that this biography takes things a step too far in an attempt to be more easily understood by the reader. A good biography presents what facts are known, accepts what is not known, and allows the reader to make their own conclusions. This one presents its own conclusions as fact. So, while I definitely did enjoy the read, I feel it takes a step backward in terms of establishing fact from common belief and misconception about King Edward I.

Ray As a student of English history all my life, A Great and Terrible King will now have a prominent place on my book shelf. Mr. Morris has done a wonderful job illuminating one of the greatest names in medieval history. It is well written and researched. Having traveled a good deal though northern Wales in the 1990's, I saw many of Edward's castles but had little appreciation for what I was seeing. The haunting Denas Bran made a strong impression on me when I first saw it, now even more so. The massive Caernarfon castle now makes perfect sense. One of the more interesting aspects of this history is how much the Arthurian myth influenced culture, political policy as well as diplomacy for the Edwardian court.If you enjoy a good read that will bring to light one of the most interesting characters in history let alone English history, get this book.

About the Author

Joseph Fink created the Welcome to Night Vale and Alice Isn't Dead podcasts. He lives with his wife in New York.

Jeffrey Cranor cowrites the Welcome to Night Vale podcast. He also cocreates theater and dance pieces with choreographer/wife Jillian Sweeney. They live in New York.  

Jeffrey Cranor co-writes--along with Joseph Fink--the hit podcast and touring live show Welcome to Night Vale. He also makes theater and dance. He has written more than 100 short plays with the New York Neo-Futurists, co-wrote and co-performed a two-man show (What the Time Traveler Will Tell Us) with Joseph, and collaborated with choreographer (also wife) Jillian Sweeney to create three full-length dance pieces: Imaginary Lines, This could be it., and Vulture-Wally. Jeffrey lives in New York State.

While I greatly enjoyed the book By Sarah While I greatly enjoyed the book, I had a hard time reading it, as it would intermittently become completely translucent and leak a viscous substance onto my hands. I switched to the ebook format, but a crack developed in the screen of my Kindle and the word "NO" replaced all of my titles. So I downloaded the audiobook from audible. The blood sacrifice and hours of chanting required to get this title was tiring, but I feel it was worth it in the end. Too bad that it can only be read once every ten years on the crescent moon.

I love the storyline and even highlighting pieces of the past. But I knew that Kristen was going to be a problem. This is a read I would definitely recommend!

This book was good from the 1st to the last . Even though this could be the end of this book I feel that is more to be told so I hope there is a part 2. Not only was it a good book but it was an complete book more than 100 pages. I thank the author for that.

Perkin Rebellion is the continuation of the story of the Wars of the Roses and spans from June 1462 to June 1471. Those familiar with its captivating prequel Succession will notice an all different kind of England with Rebellion unfortunately. Gone are the deliciously wicked characterizations from Succession, sharp witty dialogue and exciting events presented in rich tableaus that just beg to be read and indulged in. In this novel and for this eager reader, Rebellion reads as an empty hollow shell of history, so much potential and opportunities lost with too many inconsistencies to ignore. What shined brilliantly in the prequel in terms of the familiar and clever fashions of using oddments of chronicles, articles and recovered letter segments from the 15th century, becomes a disappointing muddled way to hurry the story along and doesn't add anything useful to the chapters this time. Also historic figures I have been anticipating to be reunited with and to see appear in the pages were presented flat and sadly underplayed.I could have honestly stopped multiple times throughout Rebellion but I just had to see how the epic Battle of Tewkesbury would be depicted or one particular infamous mysterious death from history would be explained; sadly these became the final disappointing factors for me with only one short chapter dedicated to each. More chapters and passages were presented on King Edward IV's bowel habits and strong male infatuations with his counsel and Margaret of Anjou sleeping in a cave and starring at a lake than the ending of Rebellion. Overall, there were glimpses in certain chapters of the rich scenes I have come to love about this series, there is an obvious dedication to history in these works and I still plan to read any other books that come along. Rebellion is by no means a standalone novel, those who are unfamiliar with the events of the Wars of the Roses may become confused and frustrated without a solid entertaining foundation, so please start with Succession and maybe later, support your local library by picking up a copy of Rebellion.

In a U.S. Forest Service bookstore, I saw this book. Since we planned to return to California and tour the Gold Rush areas, I bought the book. I made a good choice! The use of William Swain's actual diary and letters made me feel almost like I was there, the descriptions were so detailed and vivid. It was an incredible journey that tens of thousands of men, women, and children made across the west. Many of these people thought that they could simply pick up gold nuggets for a few days and be rich. In fact, gold mining was brutally hard work, and few of the 49ers ever got rich. The author does a fantastic job of describing the California Gold Rush in human terms.If you only read one book about the California Gold Rush, "The World Rushed In" would be a great choice.

Excellent Book By Susan Phillips I am a 4th generation Californian (and proud of it), whose great great grandfather came to California from Illinois in the 1840s for farming (with no other family members). In addition, I have been to many areas described in the book, not only in the Trinity Alps and foothills of the Sierra Nevada in California but in Nevada, northern Utah, Wyoming, the high plains east of Denver, and the jumping off places of St. Joseph and Independence, Missouri. Thus because of the detail presented in this book, it is more personal to me than many of the other books I have read about western US migrations.The details of the Swain diary and letters and the research of the author to fill in details of the travels is outstanding and allows me in particular to reminisce about those parts of the mid west and west that I have actually been through and spent time in. For the average person traveling by car through the west, it is hard to understand or even remotely empathize with the people traveling to California in the 1800s. However, in my case, I have lived, hiked and camped in the deserts of Utah and Arizona so I can get a glimmering of what it truly was like 164 years ago; but only a glimmering because I had quite sufficient food, water and places to get out of the sun in my experiences.Anyway, the author and editors did an excellent job with this book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in any aspect of the westering experience in the mid 1800s, not just those interested in the California gold rush.

By edmaa26 This is a great book, written by a wonderful author who obviously was dedicated to painstaking research and authenticity. I recently saw J.S. Holiday on a TV show about the West, and then later was so sorry to hear of his passing in 2006. It may seem a bit obscure, but in some ways, Mr. Holiday's writing in this book reminded me of Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" in the way it made me believe that what he wrote described how things really were back then. I highly recommend "The World Rushed In..." to all who are interested in Western U.S. history.

This is a relatively new seismological theory about earthquakes, and how much readers accept about Dvorak’s book depends on their willingness to accept a theory that is still in the early stages of development. Nice overview of popular literature on earthquakes with some observations by the author By Geology Maven This is an unevenly written but generally informative review of earthquakes in California's historical record. Especially useful are his descriptions of the various localities where one might see various aspects of the many major and those less well known faults actively sliding their right lateral way to the northwest. I was disappointed that not one map was included in the book although scores of localities were described. This was a real drawback and a major reason why I gave the book only 3 stars. While I can follow maps easily and as a geologist track the formations and faults relatively easily on a published map, I think the interested layman would have more difficulty. This is exacerbated by the author frequently uses distance terms like "a few miles" when it could be 5 or 50 miles. The photos are nice, but maps would've been better. My other beef was the author's utter lack of knowledge on the oil industry. His few comments and stories indicate that he really didn't talk to anyone who knows the industry, or read any of the many books on the topic or the geophysics used, a topic of special interest for this book, since earthquake detection and ground motion studies are integral to many aspects of the industry. Since he didn't mind lifting entire chunks from other people's books in order to write this one (including the venerable Amos Nur, a "god" in the geophysical world), why didn't he have one proper source for the petroleum industry? For example, hydraulic fracturing does not target kerogen. Kerogen is a precursor of mature hydrocarbon. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book, especially the chapter he lifted from his intro to the John McPhee book, and the summary of Amos Nur's book. I found my own maps, followed his descriptions of his own experience on the outcrop - my personal favorite part his book, and plan to visit some of these outcrops myself. His interview on NPR was quite interesting and it is what led me to download the book to my Kindle. I hope there is a 2nd edition and Mr. Dvorak's editor lets him put some maps in the book and fix some of the mistakes when he strays off topic.

I love when an author takes a single event, idea or thing and gives an in depth study on the subject. Author Dvorak has produced a brilliant study on the San Andreas fault, which makes California one of the most earthquake prone places on earth. He concentrates not just on the geology (which is covered in detail), but also the scientists who were instrumental in determining what exactly was taking place beneath the earth to cause such devastation. Along the way, you learn about how various theories were postulated and then either confirmed or denied by evidence found sometimes even years later after the theories were discussed. You get biographical data on the scientists which makes their discoveries fit into the context of their lives.John Dvorak certainly has a knack for writing about science. The difficult concepts are laid out beautifully, allowing the non-scientific reader able to follow along and understand better the myriad of forces at work underneath our feet. I especially appreciated the pacing and layout of the book, which built upon concepts previously discussed. As one who visits California often, I plan on checking out some of the various places where the fault is visible and the effects of the numerous earthquakes can still be seen. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants a better understanding of earthquakes. But what makes the book special is how the author shows how various theories were built and expanded upon by numerous scientists within the last 100 years. It brings the science alive and demonstrates that it truly does take a "village" to develop lasting scientific knowledge.

But, don't attempt to read this book without an atlas or better yet a tablet at hand. There are no maps in the book, and the author is constantly referring to small towns and obscure places in California. If the book included maps and diagrams it would be FAR better.

Jenkins, Sr.--and I purposely list the categories in that order, for now that we know him better through this second book, it is apparent that Jenkins's first gift is research. He stands in a rarefied class of pure researchers who do it for the sheer joy of uncovering facts and figures, anecdotes and analysis, esoterica and minutiae to delight and enlighten us insatiable readers. It is a gift, like those people who have a knack for finding treasures at garage sales!Jenkins will not confine you to generalities. If ten men remained in a position while their regiment was ordered onward, we learn it from him. He explains things from multiple angles and viewpoints; for example, I finally understand the particularities of what has been only vaguely alluded to by others: how, exactly, Minty's brigade fired their Spencers "underwater" while crossing the Chattahoochee River!But as soon as you might conclude that this book amounts to no more than a compendium of facts, Jenkins launches into a profound probe of a 19th century paradigm shift in the army--in fact, throughout American culture: the demise of honor, consideration, refined sensibilities and verities (often associated with, but not limited to, the "Old South") in favor of hard war, competitive dominance, and plainspokenness. (I am not doing his concept justice--just read it.)The greatest contribution this book offers is its detailed treatment of the Battle of Moore's Mill which, as Jenkins notes, has been "all but lost from history." If it once was lost, then now is found: he weaves a thorough, poignant account. I feel that he shortchanged the fight at Ruff's Mill somewhat by not clearly delineating it; the narrative ran it together with other maneuvering and skirmishing of that busy day--and perhaps that is an accurate depiction. Also, I would have liked even more time spent on the Shoupades as they hold a fascination for me personally. He included a precious first-person account of Cleburne's "studying" the design and once its "scheme flashed" on him, teaching his men how they worked.Jenkins thoroughly examines the events and issues surrounding the removal of General Johnston. A reviewer of Jenkins's first book on the Battle of Peach Tree Creek who complained that he devoted insufficient time to an analysis of General Hood will get what he asked for here. At first, and for the most part, I appreciated Jenkins's resisting the current bullying on that touchy subject. The lawyer in him came out with his conclusion that "the great weight of the available" evidence proves the Army of Tennessee's "tremendous faith in Joe Johnston," contrary to what some would have us believe. And he sets forth a telling contrast of casualties under Hood and Johnston. But then, over the course of eight solid pages, he suddenly diverts into a restatement, point-by-point, of the current Hood dogma. It is a monotonous sermon that we have now heard repeatedly and does not add to nor flow with the book. It would be fine if he took some of the points and wove them in with his more complex, nuanced approach; instead, that section does not ring true either in tone or content--and it detracts from his pure, from-the-heart, researcher innocence. (I'm probably going to catch it now.)I thoroughly recommend this book for the significant truth that it reveals: the Civil War was far more than a series of major battles. Often, the most interesting aspects of it are found in movements and countermovements, less significant engagements, and in drawing lines between points A and B. "To the Gates of Atlanta" fills in several of those lines for us and reminds us that many soldiers fought and fell along roadsides and creek banks and earth works obscured by woodsy patches now in city and suburban neighborhoods. Robert Jenkins brings these men back to life for us to contemplate their stories and their sacrifice.

I met Mr. Jenkins last year on the Georgia Battlefields Association tour when I purchased a copy of his Battle of Peachtree Creek. My four days around Mr. Jenkins told that he was a historical researcher, and just someone who pulled documents and story’s together to write a book. He had the passion of one who had dedicated his being to finding the root story and is now sharing those with the rest of us.This analogy of Jenkins shows as he reveals the days leading up to the fall of Atlanta, from the Confederate victory at Kennesaw Mountain leading up to the Battle of Peachtree Creek, and the Battle of Jonesboro, the first of four battles for Atlanta. Jenkins answers many of the questions that have haunted historians about the Atlanta Campaign. Why Jefferson Davis replaced Johnston, why Sherman moved quickly to take Atlanta. What the soldiers were doing as the politicians and generals maneuvered them like pawns on a game board. There are many previously untold stories that make this a must read. Small places like, Smyrna, Ruffs Mill, Roswell, Vinings, Nancy Creek, Moore’s Mill, and Howells Mill are no longer, almost forgotten places as Jenkins gives each their due in his work.This is a must have for the personal library, and a must read, along with Jenkins Battle of Peachtree Creek.

I enjoyed the book and recommend for the following reasons: First and foremost, the book is an unbiased account giving equal time to both sides and their principal characters. Second, the book is very well written and the mis-spellings mentioned previously are because of the soldiers letters not being edited. Third, the book stays on the main theme and doesn't go off on tangents.The maps could be much better though as this is a campaign that needs them badly. In addition, the maps should be placed at pertinent point of the story and not in the beginning of the book. I would recommend this book but I would also look for the book 'Campaign For Atlanta' by Scaife as his maps are phenomenal.

I never really understood the details of and always wondered how mindful, intelligent people could allow what went on in Germany to transpire. What happened in Germany can also happen here and it reminds me of story they tell about Benjamin Franklin when the founding fathers were planning our form of government in Philadelphia. One afternoon a women stopped Franklin on the street and asked ,’What type of government are you going to give us Mr. Franklin?’ Franklin is reported to have answered “A Republic, Madam if you can keep it”This is a really good, thought provoking read. I got the kindle addition and think that the upload to pdf was a little off. However it didn’t distract from the story line, for me.

The characters leave readers on edge as the court process begins...readers hold their breath hoping for a good outcome. Similarities from this to the Woman in Gold movie is fascinating. A Jewish painting with a long line of history is now worth millions. World War II in Germany was a terrifying endless moment in history that those in the present day will never forget. Nazi take what once belonged to the Jewish people of Germany. They had their rights stripped, their possessions taken, and countless thousands were killed. Families were torn, fear in every direction...any kind of resistance lured not only the Jewish owner but the owner's family to death. The Girl Called Princess Charlotte by Gerard Shirar is a startling truth that should be uncovered and read by all. Gerard Shirar's writing is well-developed and awe-inspiring. It shows readers that even after so much time has gone by that justice can prevail. Overall, I highly recommend this historical novel to readers worldwide.

While the lawyers are working on the case behind it, a story begins to develop from the diaries of a young man named Markus. The mystery behind the painting is fascinating and it makes for a great and intriguing read.Honestly, when I first began I wasn't sure how I felt about this book. It was a bit slow to start, but it soon had me deeply sucked into the story. This book has a lot of history and so it made it a great read to me. I absolutely fell in love with the character of Markus. His writing in the diaries is so real. He was in the war. He saw the Nazi parties, he saw the discrimination against the Jews.It all had a very real feel to it. It was hard not to like him and feel for him through all his journeys. He was very colorful in his diary and you see the world and the aftermath from all sides. He painted a very clear picture of his life and what was really going on in the world during this time.If you love history like I do, this book will be right up your alley....Stormi
