In 1943, Norwegians formed their third squadron flying under RAF command: No. 333 Squadron. One of the chosen few to fly 'The Wooden Wonder', the revolutionary and deadly de Havilland Mosquito, was 21-year-old Finn Eriksrud. Eriksrud had traveled all the way across the world to end up in Scotland to fly the Mosquito after a hazardous escape from Norway. He would now fly over his native country on extremely dangerous low-level reconnaissance and patrol missions from May 1943 onwards. By December 1943, all of the original Mosquito pilots were either killed from flying accidents or shot down over Norway. That same month was Eriksrud's final mission with No. 333 Squadron. He was forced to ditch his Mosquito off the coast of Norway where he was taken prisoner alongside his navigator Erling Victor Johanssen. Eriksrud had not gone down without a fight. During those dangerous months, he had shot down a Junkers Ju 88, his navigator taking a snapshot before the German bomber crashed in flames.

A True Story that Makes You Wonder By Odd Chr Hauge Tor Idar Larsen has put together the story of Finn Eriksrud who experienced everything a fighter pilot could during WW2 apart from his own death. This story satisfied my hunger to find out how Norwegians managed to escape the Nazis in their home country, crisscrossing the world and finally ending up in flight training in Canada. Surprising to me, it was a journey with many bright moments and experiences in spite of scarce resources. The best part of the book in my opinion, is Finn's emotional Mosquito recon flight across the coastline of western Norway (at the time enemy territory), two and a half years after he had left this country. The strength of this book is the in depth research Larsen has done into the wartime experiences of Finn Eriksrud. Written with Finn as the narrator, the book contains explains events both found in Finn’s earlier writings, as well as significant historical events Finn took part in, but never commented on. The book contains a lot of good humor while remaining respectful to the subject matter. Despite the bright moments, there are descriptions of strange things that threw some of his peers over the proverbial psychological edge. The book ends with Finn’s letters to his parents and family from prison camp. The heartbreaking letters bear witness to a headstrong determination to remain productive, positive, and useful during his captivity. The only drawback possibly worth mentioning is that the book contains some, but not many, typographical and grammatical errors as might be expected for a first edition by a non-native speaker. Also, a few sentences about Finn's feats after the war would have been nice. He had a long career as a successful trial lawyer, bringing many high profile lawsuits before the Supreme Court in Norway. All in all, this is a book that inspired me to read more. Well done!
