Martin This book just came out, so I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I have read other books by Hickey, who is the top historian of the period, and I have heard him talk about Jackson the man as well as about the battle. Ever since Maitland made the distinction between history and tradition, historians have become increasingly aware of the important differences and resonances between history as it happened and history as it is remembered. It is the memory, and associated iconic images, that shape a nation's identity. This book promises to be the pivotal work connecting the battle, which Hickey has studied as a military historian, and the legendary image of Jackson and his achievement that shapes the nation 200 years later.
