The San Francisco Review described Bob Rogers a rising author who takes readers back to life and times in the early years of the Civil War, blending a brilliant mix of historic persons with his fictional characters. Celebrating the sesquicentennial year of the famed Buffalo Soldiers, Bob Rogers delivers his most ambitious work yet–a novel that spans their first generation–from Charleston and Vicksburg to Appomattox and desert Apache battlefields. First came dark days that beset Isaac Rice's epic journey–America’s wars to settle the "Negro and Indian problems.” First Dark: A Buffalo Soldier’s Story–Sesquicentennial Edition (with a foreword by General (Ret) Lloyd “Fig” Newton) is an historically correct action novel that follows Isaac Rice, the Tenth Cavalry, and the women who love him. His nineteenth century saga begins in Charleston and contributes to the story of how twenty-first century America came to be. Telling Isaac’s story, Rogers surrounds a host of diverse fictional characters with an impressive nonfiction cast, including historic political, military, religious figures, and entrepreneurs of that era. Subsequent volumes follow Isaac’s descendants, ordinary nineteenth and twentieth century working people, into and out of calamities–recessions, panics, droughts, world wars, a depression, natural disasters, and the division of people by race, class, and caste. The view through their eyes serves to enhance twenty-first century readers’ understanding of “how things got this way” in America. Isaac Rice, a teenager on a South Carolina rice plantation, traveling alone, follows a treacherous waterborne route filled with incredible hardships and danger to escape from slavery. Too young to be a soldier, the Union Army hires him to shovel coal on a gunboat. Thus begins Isaac’s westward journey, in which he encounters storms, stampeding buffalo, and the hate of zealous patriots whose causes are antithetical to the nation he is sworn to defend. Undaunted, he pursues respect and dignity on an odyssey from the middle of the Civil War in South Carolina’s Low Country and the Mississippi Heartland, to the Indian Wars on the Great Plains and deserts of Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. Isaac’s is an epic tale of young North Americans coming of age amid the violence of the U.S. Civil War, Indian Wars, Reconstruction, and spillover bloodshed from a Mexican Revolution. Telling Isaac’s story required extensive research of 19th and 20th century books, official documents, and letters, plus multiple visits to relevant geographic locations over a period of twenty years. A memorable set of characters revolve around Isaac–a Confederate guerilla, a black female activist in a Mississippi Constitutional Convention, a Mescalero Apache warrior, a white Union cavalry sergeant, and a Mexican nurse–who raise their voices and bare their souls as the world they seek constantly changes, bringing tragedy to their lives and danger for Isaac.

First Dark: A Buffalo Soldier's Story - Sesquicentennial Edition, by Bob Rogers

Review                   The Gripping saga of Isaac Rice is a hero's journey. [Don't] be surprised if First Dark ends up as a popular movie. It's also a darn good read.-- Baltimore Post-Examiner First Dark is a powerful story of the underbelly of American history that has been carefully researched and written. It covers the horrors of bigotry from the points of view of several different characters and brings everything together at the end of the story. Characters are well-developed and believable, and the dialogue and description throughout the book are brilliant.-- Readers' FavoriteI thoroughly enjoyed First Dark, a roller coaster thriller about the life of Isaac Rice, a former slave. The book is rich in historical detail and scenic descriptions that allow you to taste, feel, smell, see, and hear the events in the book. -- Dave Miller, CEO, American Red Cross National Testing Laboratory

This engaging story centers on Isaac Rice, a run-away slave who eventually joins a Buffalo Soldier's unit of the Union Army in the West and intertwines his life and experiences with those of such diverse people as plantation owners, US congressmen, army units operating behind enemy lines, hostile indians and Mexican combatants. It accurately reflects the attitudes and prejudices of the times and presents both villains and heroes.Rogers makes this novel extremely readable and entertaining as a book of fiction that is based upon actual events and deeds of real people.I thought it was great and I highly recommend "First Dark".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Gripping Saga of Isaac Rice, a Runaway Slave, is a Hero's Journey By Bill Hughes The year is 1863. The month is May. The Civil War, America's Holocaust, is raging like a firestorm. By the time this lethal national tragedy is over, it will count over 750,000 casualties, a staggering total. (1) Although troops of the Army of the Republic (Union) under General Ulysses S. Grant, have Vicksburg, Mississippi under siege, the Confederacy, the (South) under General Robert E. Lee, is far from defeated. The critical battle of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania, has yet to be fought. That epic encounter won't begin until July 1st of 1863. Meanwhile, since 1862, Union troops, thanks to their maritime prowess, are occupying the Sea Islands off of South Carolina's coast. "First Dark" is an ambitious historical novel and it's full of dramatic scenes. It opens in the low country of South Carolina on a slave planation, not far from the bustling port city of Charleston. From there, it takes our protagonist, Isaac Rice, then a 16-year-old-black slave, on an adventurous odyssey. It leads him to the heartlands of Mississippi, to the raging Indian Wars on the Great Plains, and then to the deserts of Texas, New Mexico and Mexico. The omniscient narrator focuses primarily on Isaac, but occasionally will move to other characters. Back Story: South Carolina, of all the "13 Slave States," was probably the worse! It shamelessly advocated for the horrific Civil War and for the racist doctrine of "White Supremacy." It was also looking, along with its fellow state co-conspirators, to create a "Slave Empire," modeled on the British Empire. (2) It, they hoped, would eventually include the 13 breakaway States, plus a conquered Mexico and Cuba. (3) Right up to the battle of Gettysburg, the scheming British colonialists, no surprise, were biting at the bit waiting to openly recognize the Confederacy. Were they the off-stage Wirepullers behind the bloody Civil War? (4) Many of South Carolina's most insufferable planation owners were descended from the grasping Tories, who had sided with the British colonialist against our patriotic Founding Fathers in our Revolutionary War. The Civil War (1861-65) was their vile way of getting even. The then-demented gentry of that South Carolina bragged about hating the so-called, "rabble of the North." (3) Getting back to Isaac. His yearning for freedom sets the motif for this novel. He doesn't know it at the time, but his young life is ready to take on some radical twists and turns. It will carry him far from a Civil War setting on the East Coast of our badly-divided nation. Hopefully, it will lead him to one day have his own rice farm. Will that dream ever come true? It helps in the writing of this novel that its author, Bob Rogers, has had a distinguished military career. Many of locations he chooses in the book are battlefield-related sites. Rogers, an ex-US Army captain, paratrooper and combat veteran of the Vietnam War, has a keen eye for place, people, logistics and detail. Rogers also offers cultural and political contexts in the shifting scenes, along with some strong descriptive writing. His first novel, "Will and Dena," was a historical novel about WWII. The dialogue of Rogers' "First Dark,' rings with authenticity. Most of the character are creatures of fiction, a few are historical figures. To enhance authenticity, the damnable "N" word is repeatedly used by the author in dialogues by the slaveowners and their hired thugs. They use it to dehumanize their subjugated black victims. Rogers' story works at the edges of a wide sweeping historical background, while the focus, appropriately enough, remains firmly on Isaac's coming of age. One day, Isaac, while helping his father Mark take a wagon load of "rice, corn and fodder," to the Rebel troops in Charleston, is suddenly ambushed. This incident happens not far from the Tiffany Planation, where his family resides in squalid conditions. Isaac's father is shot and killed, along with two of the Confederate soldiers protecting the convoy of eight wagons. Isaac survives because one of the attackers pushes his head down while the bullets are whizzing by him. He is shocked to learn that the attacking soldiers, wearing blue and red uniforms, are Union troops, "Yankees!" They are also black and speak the "Gullac" dialect of the area. Like Saint Paul falling off his horse on the way to Damascus, Isaac has an awakening as a result of the ambush. After returning to the planation, he slowly begins to see the Black Union troops (soon to be known to history as the "Buffalo Soldiers") as his path out of captivity. Linking up with the Buffalo Soldiers is his immediate problem. Isaac is black, a slave, barely literate and trapped deep in the heart of the South. It's a violent place where a white man deliberately killing a black person for any or no reason at all simply doesn't register as a crime. It's the Deep South, in 1863, and it reeks of barbarism. One scene that stands out for me, among many, is the author's description of a runaway slave being beaten to death with a "cat o'nine tails" by the son of the plantation's overseer--a thug named "Jeb." The local community was force to watch the terror-filled event as each hard blow with a three foot long weapon to the back of the slave drew "blood." Jeb bellowed, "Ni y'all watch what happens to n...... who run off." When Bianca, Issac's twenty-three- year-old friend, and soon-to-be lover, yelled out for him to stop. Jeb quickly turns on her and violently strikes her with his cat o' nine tails, screaming at her, "Shut up, you black bitch!" Not all of Rogers' descriptive passages work. His love scenes come off as awkward and choppy. They're too distant from the passions he's trying to convey. Overall, too, some tighter editing would have helped to make the book flow more smoothly. Nevertheless, Rogers' story-telling is captivating. And, I wouldn't be surprised if "First Dark" ends up as a popular movie. Finally, the radical changes that Isaac goes through in this epic tale are the heart of the book. As his character evolves from his war-time experiences, along with the personal losses he suffers, and the caring relationships that he embraces, we see him becoming a man on a mission that is enriching his soul. Isaac's journey, with a nod to the splendid mythologist Joseph Campbell, is a hero's journey. It's also a darn good read. -30-Notes:1. American Experience, Civil War, PBS2. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. First Dark A Buffalo Soldier's Story By curmudgeonoptimist This book tells a wonderful story, capturing the mood during and after what I believe to be the darkest era of our history. The characters come alive. You can sense their fears and uncertainties, as well as their joy. The story of Rachel's mother being sold away is gut wrenching, leaving the question: How could anyone think that owning another human being was the right thing to do? Isaac's journey is captivating. The plotting to deny the freedoms accorded white citizens to former slaves sickening. His escape and success makes you say "Yes!" The belief in education and the importance of educating oneself is inspiring. I believe "First Dark" is a story written from the heart and I enjoyed reading it.However, that being said, some thing interfere with enjoying this book. The first is poor editing. In several places I found paragraphs repeated, grammatical errors that required re-reading that are not due to the use of Gullah dialect. Another was spelling errors. The spelling error that irritated me most was the misspelling of "Hola". It was repeatedly spelled "Halo", a different word, a different language and a different meaning. I would also suggest that the author should give up his descriptions of, shall we say, romantic and passionate encounters. These scenes are obviously not his strongest skill. Mr. Brown tells a wonderful story, and I will most likely read more of his work, but he needs to acquire a better editor or proofreader.

She's beautiful, has a great job, and a handsome, rich boss that has taken a personal interest in her. A real personal interest. But Katie wants more. Will an accident, she's involved in and a gorgeous bad boy change everything? Will she give up the VIP lifestyle for a shot at something deeper?Hard Rides Billionaire Bosses is steamy, thrilling, and very well written. It's a quick read, but not short on hot sex and great characters. The chemistry between Katie and Cue is intense and magnetic, and I can't wait to see what develops between them. This is only the first book in the series and I was very impressed by Samantha Vex's writing style. I look forward to reading more from this promising new author and can't wait to see how this series unfolds.

Katie is with her wealthy, high profile boss, having great sex, but never feeling emotionally fulfilled. This leads to an argument and her taking his car in an angry joyride. She crashes, and meets Cue, a biker from a notorious biker gang. The sex scenes, both with Todd (her boss), and Cue, are hard, detailed, and sexy as hell. The writing and story and pace were all top-notch. This is a hot new author to keep an eye out. I can't wait to read the next book!

Whether or not the United States "won" the war of 1812, two engagements that occurred toward the end of the conflict had an enormous influence on the development of American identity: the successful defenses of the cities of Baltimore and New Orleans. Both engagements bolstered national confidence and spoke to the élan of citizen soldiers and their militia officers. The Battle of New Orleans―perhaps because it punctuated the war, lent itself to frontier mythology, and involved the larger-than-life figure of Andrew Jackson―became especially important in popular memory. In Glorious Victory, leading War of 1812 scholar Donald R. Hickey recounts the New Orleans campaign and Jackson’s key role in the battle.

Drawing on a lifetime of research, Hickey tells the story of America’s "forgotten conflict." He explains why the fragile young republic chose to challenge Great Britain, then a global power with a formidable navy. He also recounts the early campaigns of the war―William Hull’s ignominious surrender at Detroit in 1812; Oliver H. Perry’s remarkable victory on Lake Erie; and the demoralizing British raids in the Chesapeake that culminated in the burning of Washington.

Tracing Jackson’s emergence as a leader in Tennessee and his extraordinary success as a military commander in the field, Hickey finds in Jackson a bundle of contradictions: an enemy of privilege who belonged to Tennessee’s ruling elite, a slaveholder who welcomed free blacks into his army, an Indian-hater who adopted a native orphan, and a general who lectured his superiors and sometimes ignored their orders while simultaneously demanding unquestioning obedience from his men. Aimed at students and the general public, Glorious Victory will reward readers with a clear understanding of Andrew Jackson’s role in the War of 1812 and his iconic place in the postwar era.

Glorious Victory: Andrew Jackson and the Battle of New Orleans (Witness to History), by Donald R. Hickey

Review

Engaging, enjoyable, and well-written, Glorious Victory will help students and the broader public understand the War of 1812 and Andrew Jackson's mythic appeal to antebellum Americans. Penned by one of the leading experts on the War of 1812, the book offers a succinct summary of the war's causes and conduct while simultaneously presenting readers with a balanced depiction of Jackson's successes and moral shortcomings. This volume will serve instructors and students well and should foster spirited discussions on Jackson's leadership.

(John W. Quist, Shippensburg University)

Eminent 1812 scholar Hickey... explains why contemporary Americans saw the battle as a 'glorious victory'... and why Jackson and the battle continued as prominent symbols as the rest of the war gradually faded in public memory... This is a quick, enjoyable read, but Hickey's extensive use of primary sources makes it suitable for scholars too.

(Choice)

Donald R. Hickey, dubbed by one authority ‘the dean of 1812 scholarship,’ tells it all in this slim but lively, lucid, and entertaining account... As the hit song of 1959 goes, ‘In 1814 we took a little trip, Along with Colonel [ sic] Jackson down the mighty Mississipp’.’ Anyone who wants to make that expedition should seek out Don Hickey as a tour guide.

(Journal of America's Military Past)

2 of 9 people found the following review helpful. a pivotal work! By Jerry L. Martin This book just came out, so I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I have read other books by Hickey, who is the top historian of the period, and I have heard him talk about Jackson the man as well as about the battle. Ever since Maitland made the distinction between history and tradition, historians have become increasingly aware of the important differences and resonances between history as it happened and history as it is remembered. It is the memory, and associated iconic images, that shape a nation's identity. This book promises to be the pivotal work connecting the battle, which Hickey has studied as a military historian, and the legendary image of Jackson and his achievement that shapes the nation 200 years later.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Light and Not Fulfilling By Rick Spell I'm trying to read shorts as I love to read but have limited time. A successful businessman billionaire meets a cut but not stunning girl and is instantly infatuated and treats her like a queen. Sound like something a romantic girl might write? Exactly, well it's short and to the point but nothing of substance. I'd take a pass.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mad sexy but also sweetly romantic By Kitty Smith So much of the first time romance I find involves a sexy, older man and a virginal young girl. "Jane's Big Bang" flips that around and introduces gorgeous and very experienced Jane to gangly, bespectacled Hartley who clearly has no clue or game when it comes to women. From his ratty hoopty to his cringeworthy attempt to help her get into it, I couldn't stop mentally face palming at his utter hopelessness. And yet somehow the gods smile upon him and stick an erect nipple in his face where no nipple has ever gone before. The sexy, stuttering scientist is about to get luckier than he's ever dared to dream as Jane realizes he's one big diamond in need of polishing.I like that this story manages to be mad sexy and sweetly funny at the same time. Hartley Montgomery is adorably cute as he experiences a series of firsts. There's also some unwelcome drama in the form of spray tanned Caleb but all ends well and Hartley pulls off a sexy and romantic comeback. Very romantic and sweet with plenty of steam, well worth the read!

Review

Our Study Guide for the CSP Test Is Unlike Any Other

If you'd like to get the CSP test score you deserve, to quit worrying about whether your score on the CSP test is "good enough," and to beat the test taking game so you can become a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), then this might be the most important message you read this year.

Our comprehensive study guide for the Safety Fundamentals and Comprehensive Practice Examination is written by our CSP test experts, who painstakingly researched the topics and the concepts that you need to know to do your best on the CSP test. Our original research into the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Examination, offered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), reveals the specific content areas and the essential skills that are critical for you to know on the CSP test. We've taken the information and developed a study guide that is guaranteed to help you be successful on the CSP test.

Now, we know you may be skeptical, so let us give you three good reasons we can back up what we claim:

The Three Reasons To Believe What We Say

The First Reason:

Our company's name is Mometrix Test Preparation, and we have a team of standardized test researchers who have worked on developing our study guide for the CSP test. The standards for who gets to work on the team are very strict- we demand the best for our customers, and only those who met our exacting standards made the cut. The dedicated research staff have years of combined experience in mastering the content and skills necessary to succeed on the toughest exams.

The Second Reason:

Some academic studies have revealed that test takers do not really benefit from the traditional test preparation process. But we knew there had to be a solution- if test takers were not doing well on the CSP test despite high intelligence, there had to be a set of secret keys to the test that would open the door of success for these test takers.

We believe we have succeeded in finding the secret keys of the exam. What we found was surprising, and in some cases ridiculously simple once explained to the average test taker.

We put the findings together in a thorough, concise study guide that we believe allows any test taker, at any skill level, to improve his or her results dramatically with a minimum of effort.

The Third Reason:

We created the product in part because we were frustrated by the options available to test takers who really wanted to do well on the CSP test.

A common approach is to TEACH the material, instead of TEACHING THE TEST. That's not necessarily good enough for the CSP test- you have to know how to apply the knowledge. Most test takers already have a general knowledge of the material that will be covered on the exam.

One reason some test takers do well on the day of the test is that they have made the critical connection between the material they learned and how to use the material to succeed on the CSP test.

Our guide addresses the difference between merely knowing the material and knowing how to use the material to perform on test day.

You're going to save time, money, and aggravation. You'll learn to avoid the mistakes and the bad strategies that you've been vulnerable to. --Just for starters, here are some ways our product can help your score on the CSP test...

The Exclusive Test Taking Techniques

  • Keys to questions that "give away" the wrong (or right) answers- You get credit for some of the questions without really even knowing anything about them
  • Get quick, customized help for the questions you have- just send us a quick email and we'll get back to you promptly with the answer.
  • Details the EXACT STUDY PLAN for the CSP test that we believe gives the most results in the least time- No matter if you're studying for a week or a month, you won't waste the precious study time you have on useless activities
  • Our researchers are more than just academic theoreticians who understand the technical nature of standardized tests, but are also experts on test taking itself- they reveal the exact skills and the information you'll need to perform under pressure during the test.
  • A systematic analysis and the best breakdown into "plain language" of how to deconstruct and master the toughest problems- You turn the problems that most of the test takers will stumble over to your advantage
  • Learn why, when, and how to guess to your advantage. Many test takers use exactly the wrong strategy, but you can avoid the pitfalls with the help of our standardized test experts
  • Includes instructions detailing the best way for you to get started with your preparation efforts so you can begin the path of improving your scores immediately
  • The most efficient and accurate method for picking the right answer every time- You won't be scratching your head trying to read the mind of the test question writer, but will instead know exactly what to look for to pick the best answer
  • Courteous, unlimited customer service is 100% free- if you need the product emailed to a different address, lose the product, or have any other difficulty- the help you need is just a short email away and our representatives are active 7 days a week helping customers
  • The research of our team of test experts is 100% independent and original
  • Our exclusive "calibration strategy" to help you never go too fast OR too slow when answering even the toughest questions
  • The 5-step process we've developed, what we call the "phased" approach, concerning the use of the various study aids and practice tests
  • How the problem of procrastination can kill your chance of success, and the most important thing you can do about it
  • How to know when you've studied as much as you need to for the exam- and the reason why we think some people should spend LESS time studying for the test
  • The Top 20 things you should take care of within 24 hours of taking the test- use the list we provide as a checklist to make sure you've taken care of the "little things" in addition to studying hard
  • How to predict the right answer before you see the answer choices- and how to prevent the wrong answers from "polluting" your mind and tempting you into a trap designed by the test writers
  • Why answers that "sound" correct are often the very ones that are wrong- and how to tell the difference between the right answer and the many clever-sounding traps set for you by the test writers
  • Our "benchmark" method for deciding which of the answer choices you should pick
  • How some of the random bits of information in a question often "give away" the right answer choice
  • How to "milk the question" for clues to the right answer even if you have no idea what the question is asking about
  • How to avoid panicking when you don't know the answer to a question- we offer a systematic method that will serve as the "lifeline" you need to minimize the time wasted on the test questions that leave you stumped --
  • What to do about the tough questions that you have no clue how to answer- don't just give up, use the advice we offer to make sure you give yourself the best chance of getting the right answer
  • How to use our brainstorming method to get "inside the question" and reveal the hard-to-find clues and some of the subtle things you didn't realize you knew
  • Do you know what a "hedge phrase" is? Learn why looking for the key "weasel words" in the question can help identify the correct answer
  • Why "new information" in the answer choices almost always means that the answer choice is wrong- and the way to avoid this trick planted by the clever test writers
  • Learn to avoid this time-draining mistake on the test - why the technical terms you don't know can be a major stumbling block and waste precious time, and the way that you can work around them
  • The secret to using the contextual clues in the questions and the answer choices to make important distinctions between the right and the wrong answer choices
  • The two situations where you should NOT check your answers thoroughly
  • How to avoid careless mistakes by using the quick "double check" system. It will more than pay for itself relative to the time it will take you
  • Test writers will often quote directly from the question in an answer- learn whether this is something you should trust or avoid
  • Why "extreme statements" in the answer choices are dead giveaways for wrong answers- find out how to detect the subtle differences between reasonable answers and the answers that are almost always wrong
  • Learn how to group your answer choices into "families" that often narrows down the pool of correct answers- this is a quick way to immediately eliminate one or two of the answer choices and increase your odds of getting the question right

Safety is key...even on an exam By SSA When I was ready to take my CSP test to get my certification as a safety professional, I knew that safety was key more than anything else, just as in any other situation. What I mean is that I didn't want to go into the test feeling anything but safe. I knew I wouldn't feel safe about the results unless I studied hard in advance. I didn't want to guess about how I would do... I wanted to know I would do well. I bought this study guide in hopes that it would help me review. It wasn't very expensive so I figured even if it only helped a little it would be worth it. Boy was it worth it! It was so comprehensive and well organized I could hardly believe it. It went through how to college, assess, and even manage safety risks. It also covered health, environmental and security type risks. It had everything I needed to know and I was grateful that it didn't waste my time on any little things that I really didn't need. I kept the guide in my office at home in case I ever need to remember any of the things it included. I know I had it all for the test, but that doesn't mean I'll remember every detail a year down the road, but at least I know I can find it again in the study guide if I need to.

The Color of Vengeance (The Dragon's Dove Chronicles), by Kim Iverson Headlee

About the Author Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet. Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendant of twentieth-century Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Babushka escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventh-century proto-Viking king of the Swedish colony in Russia. For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8-book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and other novels clamoring for attention. She has been a published novelist since 1999, beginning with the original editions of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster, ISBN 0671020412) and Liberty (writing as Kimberly Iverson, HQN Books, Harlequin, ISBN 0373771347).

By blueeyedelf As a huge fan of Kim Headlee's work, I highly recommend this short story to give you a taste of her work and suggest the first novel in her series, Dawnflight, as a read to follow this one if you love Arthurian legends and adventure.

Told from two viewpoints, that of the protagonist and the antagonist. There is a fairly brief mention of Arthur, but the main protagonist is Dwras. After seeing his wife and baby son brutally slaughtered all he wants is revenge, but as a simple farmer, he does not have either the skill or weapons to fight the evil marauders.Being Welsh myself, and proud of my Celtic heritage, I could relate to the characters and incidents in this story. The descriptive passages are well written and the scenes unfolded before me like a film. I would have liked a little more of 'the Pendragon' being also keenly interested in the Arthurian legends, but then this is the tale of Dwras and his quest for revenge. He learns to wield a sword in the service of Arthur and is finally ready to wreak vengeance on those who murdered his family. The climax is bloody and thrilling with a fairly predictable twist, but this is, in itself, a satisfying conclusion and means the character has changed and developed considerably from the person he was at the start.. I enjoyed this short read and would like to read more of Kim Iverson's work.

Vengeance Is His By oktravelchick I went into this story assuming it had some romance in it (since my blog is for romance), so I was surprised when it did not. It had elements of love and redemption, though, and I did find it enjoyable - just not my typical read. This short story starts with Prince Badulf invading a village in order to steal cattle. So when Dwras, his wife and son were introduced, I was surprised to have two men at the center of the story (as I mentioned, I thought it was a romance).Dwras is injured in the resulting village war (this is a historical piece), and bad things happen for him personally (don't want to give away the plot). He does want vengeance on those that dared to harm his people, and he is taken in by a group of warriors. He is able to do battle, but does he find that he is all about vengeful retribution, or not?Though not my typical read, I really did enjoy it. I got a bit lost in some of the names and history parts, but it still kept me entertained. I found the ending really fulfilling!Romance Readers received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

EXCERPT:In the great Central Valley of California there are only two seasons—spring and summer. The spring begins with the first rainstorm, which usually falls in November. In a few months the wonderful flowery vegetation is in full bloom, and by the end of May it is dead and dry and crisp, as if every plant had been roasted in an oven.

Then the lolling, panting flocks and herds are driven to the high, cool, green pastures of the Sierra. I was longing for the mountains about this time, but money was scarce and I couldn’t see how a bread supply was to be kept up. While I was anxiously brooding on the bread problem, so troublesome to wanderers, and trying to believe that I might learn to live like the wild animals, gleaning nourishment here and there from seeds, berries, etc., sauntering and climbing in joyful independence of money or baggage, Mr. Delaney, a sheep-owner, for whom I had worked a few weeks, called on me, and offered to engage me to go with his shepherd and flock to the headwaters of the Merced and Tuolumne rivers—the very region I had most in mind. I was in the mood to accept work of any kind that would take me into the mountains whose treasures I had tasted last summer in the Yosemite region. The flock, he explained, would be moved gradually higher through the successive forest belts as the snow melted, stopping for a few weeks at the best places we came to. These I thought would be good centers of observation from which I might be able to make many telling excursions within a radius of eight or ten miles of the camps to learn something of the plants, animals, and rocks; for he assured me that I should be left perfectly free to follow my studies. I judged, however, that I was in no way the right man for the place, and freely explained my shortcomings, confessing that I was wholly unacquainted with the topography of the upper mountains, the streams that would have to be crossed, and the wild sheep-eating animals, etc.; in short that, what with bears, coyotes, rivers, cañons, and thorny, bewildering chaparral, I feared that half or more of his flock would be lost. Fortunately these shortcom ings seemed insignificant to Mr. Delaney. The main thing, he said, was to have a man about the camp whom he could trust to see that the shepherd did his duty, and he assured me that the difficulties that seemed so formidable at a distance would vanish as we went on; encouraging me further by saying that the shepherd would do all the herding, that I could study plants and rocks and scenery as much as I liked, and that he would himself accompany us to the first main camp and make occasional visits to our higher ones to replenish our store of provisions and see how we prospered. Therefore I concluded to go, though still fearing, when I saw the silly sheep bouncing one by one through the narrow gate of the home corral to be counted, that of the two thousand and fifty many would never return.

My First Summer in the Sierra (Illustrated), by John Muir

Amazon.com Review John Muir, a young Scottish immigrant, had not yet become the famed conservationist whom he liked to call "John o' the Mountains" when he first trekked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada not long after the end of the Civil War. Having caught a glimpse of such magical places as Tuolumne Meadows and El Capitan, Muir ached to return, and in the summer of 1869 he signed on with a crew of shepherds and drove a flock of 2,500 woolly critters toward the headwaters of the Merced River.

The diary he kept while tending sheep forms the heart of My First Summer in the Sierra; published in 1911, it enticed thousands of Americans to visit the Yosemite country. The book is full of the concerns Muir would later voice as America's foremost preservationist and wildlands advocate, which would bear fruit in the creation of several national parks and monuments. And it resounds with Muir's nearly pantheistic regard for the natural world: with celebrations of the Sierra's lizards that "dart about on the hot rocks, swift as dragonflies," its mountain lions and tall trees and fierce thunderstorms and bears; with Muir's overarching awe for places that civilization had yet to tame. Though perhaps a little purple by modern standards, Muir's book continues to inspire readers to seek out such places for themselves and make them their own--and as such it stands among the enduring classics of environmental literature. --Gregory McNamee

Review “As more and more of us grow aghast at what we have done to the world we started with, Muir’s reverence and devotion will seem keenly germane, and our regret may be transmuted into a fight for the future.” —Edward HoaglandFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

Review "The richness of his writing roots deeper into the terrain than any other wilderness writer known to me." Discovering the Range of Light By K.S.Ziegler John Muir was born in 1838 and at a young age emigrated from Scotland with his family to a Wisconsin farm. He escaped the hard labor of the farm and his father's backward Biblical obsessions by displaying great powers of visualization. From principles learned from books, he whittled and fashioned barometers, thermometers, clocks and other marvels from the barest of materials. But he repudiated his inventive genius, which could have made him rich, after an industrial accident left him temporarily blinded; and he took off for the wilderness to discover plants and the natural world. This book is a journal account of Muir's finding a place for himself in Yosemite after some dangerous wandering through the hazards of reconstruction in the South after the Civil War. It's a book of discovery. Although flocks of sheep like Muir's employer's were allowed to overrun backcountry meadows, and gold miners had ripped apart the lower river beds, the Sierras then were still a place that had many aspects that had not yet been explored or understood. The backcountry was much more vulnerable to exploitation (though in many ways less endangered) than today, but there was freer and unfettered access for one who sought out it's mysteries and wanted to learn. This book shows Muir's powers of visualization ("the eye within the eye") in his beginning to formulate the role that glaciers play in the formation of the landscape. No one at that time had come to a solid understanding of what had made Yosemite Valley. And, although it might seem quite clear in retrospect, it took a strong mind of one who up until that time had been adrift in the world, a wanderer who studied plants, to visualize his theories and make them known to the world.Anyone who has not experienced the Sierra first hand cannot really appreciate this book. There are lengthy and numerous descriptions of plants and animals, loving descriptions in Muir's fashion, that can only be understood by one who has reveled in the same places and likewise wants to examine all the details. It's not a purely intellectual appreciation. It's something felt with the whole body, with all the senses alive. Muir always writes of being drawn into Nature, of never turning back, as in the case of his foolhardy venture to the brink of Yosemite Falls, "I therefore concluded not to venture farther, but did nevertheless". There's also this kind of breathless anticipation of tomorrow- if only I will be given a chance to explore its fountains...

This book is Muir's diary of his first summer in the Sierra Nevada. In the spirit of an ascetic mystic, Muir recorded his feelings of wonder as he discovered the awesome beauty of the Sierra Nevada. I held my breath and chuckled as Muir described his encounters with the denizens of the woods. "Having heard that a black bear will run from his bad brother man and deciding I would like to see his gait in running, I rushed and shouted at a large cinnamon colored fellow. To my dismay, he did not run. On the contrary, he stood his ground, ready to fight. Then, I suddenly began to fear upon me would fall the work of running." For the reader or nature lover who would like to become more familiar with the father of the conservation movement, this is the book to read.

Janssen This is the third of Muir's books that I have read, the first in several years. Gretel Ehrlich writes in her introduction: "[Muir] wrote: 'I should like to live here always. It is so calm and withdrawn while open to the universe in full communion with everything good.' And in so speaking of the place he loved best, described himself."In the inimitable way of John Muir, the book is essentially a journal, in this case of his thoughts and travels in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the summer of 1869. On one day (July 15) he tells of his great desire to look directly down the thousands of vertical feet of Yosemite Falls leading him into a death-defying pilgrimage onto shear rock: "If I was to get down to the brink at all that rough edge, which might offer slight finger-holds, was the only way. But the slope . . . looked dangerously smooth and steep, and the swift roaring flood beneath, overhead, and beside me was very nerve-trying. I therefore concluded not to venture farther, but did nevertheless." I'll guess that Muir is the only person to have ever positioned himself on the lip of this great waterfall. Having earlier read of his mountaineering and storm-reveling experiences, even this is not quite surprising. On another day he writes of encountering a brown bear, a housefly, and a grasshopper, and treats them all as being equally fascinating. In a later entry, Muir contemplates raindrops with these words:"How far they have to go, how many cups to fill, great and small, cells too small to be seen, cups holding half a drop as well as lake basins between the hills, each replenished with equal care, every drop in all the blessed throng a silvery newborn star with lake and river, garden and grove, valley and mountain, all that the landscape holds reflected in its crystal depths, God's messenger, angel of love sent on its way with majesty and pomp and display of power that make man's greatest shows ridiculous. Now the storm is over, the sky is clear, the last rolling thunder-wave is spent on the peaks, and where are the raindrops now -- what has become of all the shining throng? In winged vapor rising some are already hastening back to the sky, some have gone into the plants, creeping through invisible doors into the round rooms of cells, some are locked in crystals of ice, some in rock crystals, some in porous moraines to keep their small springs flowing, some have gone journeying on in the rivers to join the larger raindrop of the ocean. From form to form, beauty to beauty, ever changing, never resting, all are speeded on with love's enthusiasm, singing with the stars the eternal song of creation."For Muir, the mostly self-educated botanist and geologist, nothing Nature does is anything less than miraculous. Only in our finest moments of insight, revelation if you will, do we see the world as Muir saw it always.[July 12, 1869] "We saw another party of Yosemite tourists to-day. Somehow most of these travelers seem to care but little for the glorious objects about them, though enough to spend time and money and endure long rides to see the famous valley. And when they are fairly within the mighty walls of the temple and hear the psalms of the falls, they will forget themselves and become devout. Blessed, indeed, should be every pilgrim in these holy mountains!"
