Since London awaits each installment of his Sherlock Holmes stories with bated breath, Arthur Conan Doyle would seem to be a lucky man. But he also has a bit of a problem. His publisher George Lippincott, on a trip to Edinburgh, has turned up dead. And not merely dead - murdered in a lurid scene drawn from one of Doyle's as yet unpublished stories. When Doyle appeals to the Scotland Yard forensics team for help, Tom and Davy, both avid Sherlockians, jump at the chance, but the unit leader, Detective Trevor Welles, is not so sure. He finds Doyle and his brilliant fictional sleuth ludicrous and suspects the "murder" is little more than a publicity stunt staged by an arrogant author and his greedy publisher. It is only when Emma Kelly, another member of the team and the object of Trevor's affection, receives a valuable pearl from an anonymous source - the opening scene of The Sign of the Four - that Trevor agrees they must indeed take Scotland Yard to Scotland. Edinburgh is a city abuzz with a strange series of crimes involving gypsies, cobras, roman soldiers, poison darts, and any number of improbable events, all drawn from the pages of Doyle. As the team scrambles to contain the mayhem, they learn that their chief suspects, a duo of men who always seem to be close to the action, in fact represent another division of Scotland Yard, one of the force's first undercover units. These men, especially the infuriatingly suave Richard Wright, aren't afraid to bend the rules or pocket the occasional bribe, and, between his young assistants' admiration for Doyle and Emma's attraction to Wright, Trevor feels as if he is losing control over his team, if not his whole life. Can the killer outthink two groups of Scotland Yard detectives and Arthur Conan Doyle himself? The answer lies at the top of a waterfall, where it takes total darkness to bring the truth to light.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Pygmies, Gypsies and Snakes, Oh My!! By C. Jones To Scotland with Arthur Conan Doyle in tow!!! Well, I have been eagerly awaiting this one for eons now as the author had a change in publisher (or distributer or something along that lines) and therefore, the publication was greatly delayed-- which was torturous as I knew that Arthur Conan Doyle was going to co-star in City of Stone and couldn't wait to see how Wright would integrate both the legendary author and his infamous characters. I enjoy the established characters on "the team" so much, but this time around the perspective shifts seemed to slow down the story... I think the more frequent (some very short) shifts jarred me out of the story, making it easier to put down. However, the "mystery" was a truly good one and the way Wright blended Doyle in and really brought his character to life was fascinating. And there were some twists which not only flipped the mystery on its back but the future of our forensics team as well. I am always amazed by the detail of the settings and the forensic procedures, as well as the banter between the characters and the increasingly complex dynamics of their relationships. I was satisfied with the conclusion of the case at hand but admit to being a bit disturbed/wary (and yet also intrigued) by Emma's change of direction at the end and what that will mean for the team. I only hope that the next installment will come to us more quickly! *Also, there were far more grammatical errors (also two names offered for a certain reptile)than I have noticed previously in Ms. Wright's usually impeccable writing-- hope the change in publisher/distributer has not cost her a good editor/proof reader. Still a more than worthy read though!

By Amazon Customer Odd title for a review, I know, but as I read this wonderful novel, I kept hoping against hope that this would not be the final effort of Ms. Wright regarding her team of Victorian crime solvers and crime scene forensic investigators. Ms. Wright's ability to faultlessly interweave Sir A. C. Doyle and his marvelous creation Sherlock Holmes into a challenging murder mystery in a small Scottish town is spellbinding! 3 quarters of the way through, I was still guessing . . . and enjoying myself immensely. If this product isn't the best of the five, it is surely in the top two. And without giving any clues at all, by the end of this one, all I want, need . . . in fact beg for is number six! Did you hear me, Ms. Wright? Get thyself busy! I need number 6!Thank heaven (see my title), I'm sure there will be a number six . . . there's got to be!

By Norma Meligonis This is the fifth in the series of full length books allowing 1890's Scotland Yard detectives and eclectic civilian sleuths to come together to solve another murder mystery. This time in Edinburgh. Firstly I was thrilled to hear Kim Wright has finally released her latest mystery especially with Sherlock Holmes' author Arthur Conan Doyle as a collaborator. It was a pleasure to be reunited with the Thursday Night Murder Mystery Club as they solve how Doyle's publisher died with no visible wounds along with other bizarre crimes involving blood angels on walls, gypsies, cobras and poison darts.
