The Battle of Kursk, despite the seven decades that have passed since the event, continues to attract great attention even today. It contains a collection of the best and at the same time little-known work of the leading Soviet war correspondents that covered the Battle of Kursk: V. Kinelovsky, P. Troshkin, F. Kislov, G. San’ko, E. Kopyt, I. Ozersky, O. Knorring and other outstanding photo journalists. The book also contains the work of a participant in those events, Lieutenant Colonel P. Gapochki, who was an adjutant to Lieutenant General N.S. Khrushchev, a member of the Voronezh Front’s Military Council. Through his duties, Gapochki managed to leave behind his personal impressions of the important and very difficult work of the top command echelon of an operating army, which to this point have been classified. Although Soviet photographs comprise the bulk of the book, it also includes a significant number of captured German photographs, as well as aerial reconnaissance photographs taken in the spring and summer of 1943. This gives a more objective image of those historical events. All of this invaluable material was found in the archives of eight Russian and foreign archives and museums, as well as in the family collections of veterans. Outstanding Photo Companion to 'Demolishing the Myth' By Dr RN Watt This is an outstanding collection of photographs and should be of interest to anybody interested in the Russian-German conflict in general. I have seen some before in other publications but the vast majority are new to me. I particularly liked the photo of the small dog carts used to evacuate Russian wounded on page 334. The emphasis of the book is upon the Red Army and while many of these shots may well be posed, most give a very good impression of summer 1943 Soviet forces. Indeed Zamulin does point out some Soviet propaganda techniques in the book (see for example p.190). This is littered with 'interesting' photos: one the crewman of a 45mm AT Gun wearing 'jigsaw' pattern cammoflage clothing (p.213); the use of a captured Marder by Soviet troops (p220). One of the best juxtapositions is on p.318 which shows a column of dusty Red Army troops on the march and a clear propaganda shot of a Soviet officer distributing cigarettes to captured German troops. The photo on p.192, again clearly posed, clearly shows the way Red Army troops would construct a trench to render the maximum of concealment from attackers. On the German side there are some very good photos which were captured by the Soviets. Again I have not seen these before Zamulin's earlier book 'Demolishing the Myth' was very critical of the Soviet Army's performance at Kursk. This book was littered with mainly portrait shots of Soviet participants. This volume has some excellent portaits of the participants but emphasises the participants in the field. It also comes as a welcome counter to the myriad of published photo collections which focus upon the German side of the war.

By Mike O'Connor Valeriy Zamulin's THE BATTLE OF KURSK 1943 is a photo-guide to that most momentous WW II battle, utilizing over 500 never-before-seen photographs from various Russian Archives. Easter Front enthusiasts will enjoy the rich visual imagery presented by Zamulin and Helion & Company.Zamulin's book is a real door-stopper of a book, topping at 476 pages. It's divided into three sections: the creation of the Kursk bulge and the Russian defensive preparations; the launching and defeat of 'Operation Citadel;' and the Russian counter-offensive. After short but comprehensive summaries, the book presents page after page of nicely-reproduced, well-captioned pix of Russian and German troops and commander, tanks, artillery, aircraft, trench scenes, 'in-action' scenes, etc.For those of us who endured decades of poorly-reproduced or badly-doctored Russian photographs of 'the motherland at war,' the pix in Zamulin's are truly magnificent. I would have opted for fewer shots of USSR commanders and more battle scenes but what the heck.While there have been other Kursk photo-histories, THE BATTLE OF KURSK 1943 jumps to the top of the heap. Though the price is steep ($71.69), anyone interested in the Eastern Front will want to add this book to their collection. Recommended.

By Panzerfaust Most of the pictures of World War II, which are, American, German and other belligerent nation, are photos of propaganda and those of this volume are no exception.In all cases, however, the photos provide insights to model makers, involving historians and collectors, evidenced by the uniform, the city destroyed, the way to place a mortar, a machine gun and so on.Finally, with this book you have over beautiful photos of the Red Army in action kursk aerial photos of the fortifications, trenches, machine gun nests, many challenging and interesting, I have already had several ideas for dioramas, I have not read it gaunt text but in these books we know that what matters are the photos here and there are also many some of the German side that I had never seen.My opinion is therefore positive.
