O'Mahony This book is a great combination of serious scholarship presented in communication style which is welcoming to the reader, informal but not joky, and accessible but not dumbed down. The story of Lucian Truscott is a true American saga, as he transformed himself from an Oklahoma schoolteacher to a respected and effective army general. I would recommend this both to military historians and to any reader who wants to understand an unusual and influential American military man and the journeys that are possible for people with brains, heart, hard work and focus.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Great read on a great general By Adam Tyler The Last Cavalryman by Harvey Ferguson is an excellent treatment of a truly interesting life. General Truscott was held to be one of the premier combat leaders of WWII, both by his superior officers and by the men under his command. His humility and lack of personal aggrandizement in the face of success is something for leaders to aspire to, and his pursuit of excellence and achievement of his mission in the face of difficult terrain and a determined enemy is admirable. Mr. Ferguson's narrative is easy to follow, interspersed with interesting anecdotes, and flows well. I thoroughly enjoyed this book on a general who I had found highly regarded in numerous treatments of the war.

A must read By Lineangle I have known the author for many years, so when he announced this book I purchased a copy figuring it would be good to support a friend with his first book. I am sure glad that I did. I have read other accounts of Truscott’s actions, particularly relative to the Italy campaign, but this book fleshed out the career with a lot of other and personal information. The author was able to access Truscott’s personal papers. What struck me was how ordinary his early career was and how it expanded through his personal contacts within the army and his steady dedication to excellent service. Unfortunately he did not have independent command in several instances ending up with his plans often being overruled with unfortunate consequences. This is a good book and well written.

A Valuable Addition to the Holocaust Record By Jeannine K Lockwood This book provides stories of the Holocaust survivors now living in Tucson, Arizona. Survivors were interviewed; the words are their own. I was mesmerized by the powerful images evoked by these stories. This is a work of the living history that will only too soon be lost. It is unique in that there are stories of Russian Jews. This book is a valuable addition to the record of a terrible time in the history of the world. But it is also a tribute to the courage, resourcefulness, and resilience of the people who contributed their stories.

By 1914 the world was changing!'Australian author Gordon Smith has spent most of his life in sales, public transport and Traffic Management, managing traffic movements through and around major road work sites through out Queensland, his last project was as Traffic Project Manager on the construction of the Gold Coast Light Rail throughout the City of Gold Coast. Gordon retired to Queensland's Sunshine Coast in 2014 and started to take in interest in researching his family. He discovered links back to the 1400's and even a distant link to the Royal Family of United Kingdom. During his research he discovered that he had 6 relatives who fought in the Great War. He knew about his relatives in the 2nd World War but knew nothing about the men in his family who had fought in the Great War. As he has stated, `My Grandparents had 4 brothers and 2 cousins in the Great War. The more I found out about them while researching my family tree it became obvious that a book MUST be written to honour them in particularly for my children, grandchildren as well as all my cousins and their children. It is also an honour to share their story with the world.'And that is what Gordon has accomplished in this well-researched brief memoir. Form his straightforward manner of writing we get the facts unstained with emotional overlay: the war was enough for that. He opens with a family tree, explaining the branches of which he will carefully lay out in chronological order. We also learn about the relationship between Australia and England. The summary of the course of events is well presented in the synopsis: `In 1914 Australia joined England and declared war on Germany and it's allies. In the small New South Wales town of Cootamundra 6 young Australians, all from the same family, individually joined the fight. This saga follows their journeys through Gallipoli and the Western Front. The saga also covers time in Egypt, England and France away from the fighting. This is a story of a family and how it was affected by a on the other side of the world. It tells of the battles, the wounding and sickness endured by these young men as well as the lighter moments. A readable history that shows some insights into what it was like during those dark times.'Gordon's Preface reads, `6 young Australians went to fight in World War I. 3 returned. This is their story based on official archives, war records and newspaper reports with some assumptions needed to complete the saga. This book is dedicated to the memory of them all including those who stayed home and worked on the farms and in the factories to support the war effort.'Though the language is simplistic, that mode makes the reality of the story/history more effective. A good editorial eye is needed to correct the grammar and structure and spelling, but it is easy to overlook that because this is a book for the heart. Gordon Smith may not have training in creative writing, but he knows how to go straight to the heart, simply by offering the facts that changed a family - and a world - in World War I. I have been researching my own family for years and can only hope to someday write a book that honors my family as well as Mr. Smith has done for the Power family of Cootamundra, South Wales, Australia.In 1914, the world entered into World War 1, and six members of this family joined them. Many of them leaving behind wives, some children, and one joining before he was age, they lived through some horrific conditions, saw many horrible things, and yes, even managed to find humor at times in their circumstances. The men serve in Gallipoli and Tripolli. They take leave through Europe, in France, and England. Their family's at home worry, write letters, pray and continue to live....as those families left behind always do.This is a raw and realistic look at what war is like, for those serving in it, and for those left behind to wait. In this case, three of the families waited in vain.My only issue with this book was some editorial issues, easily fixable. Otherwise, great book, great story, and kudos to Gordon Smith.

A Short Historical Overview That Recounts Much By Marta Cheng Early on in the last century, the men in the Power family of Cootamundra, Australia went to war. The Family That Went to War recounts those experiences with almost clinical detachment. Despite the more or less dry clinical prose, the author, Gordon Smith, has painstakingly researched the underlying history and treats it with respect. How? By not embellishing what cannot be embellished and by not trying to rely on a reader’s overt sentiment in order to make an emotional connection. Case in point lies in the author’s preface: “In 1914 Australia went to war. 6 young men from the same family in Cootamundra, southern New South Wales volunteered to fight for their King and country. Only 3 returned.” Stark words, powerful words that have the reader’s attention. However, it would have held the author in good stead had more attention been paid to the editorial aspects of the book. Although it didn’t take away from the book per se, a better editorial sweep would have made the book all that much stronger.

It could only have been better if they had more of a review test, besides the sample question for each subject. The book does come with a website from which you are able to print off extra study material, which is a big help.This book covers it all and the two sections that I knew that I would have problems with were the two sections that I felt were the best covered and explained—math and grammar. The book showed me how to do math problems with exponents and scientific notation, as well as finding the area, volume and surface of objects. I have always had the hardest time solving word problems, but, thanks to this guide, I can see things more clearly than I have ever been able to in the past. The ratios and graphing section were very helpful.When it came to the grammar section, I have always gotten in trouble for my lack of parallel structure, but, now, I feel that I can write like a pro. I now know when to use a colon and a semi-colon, and I know what to look for when it comes to tenses of words within a sentence. The other sections on history and science were also very helpful; it was concise and to the point. This is the best investment that I have ever made.

It did a great job of preparing her for the test, her first standardized test in her academic career. Only wish there were more questions directed at each specific grade level as this book covers 9-12 grade. I understand there is a fair amount of overlap on the test questions though, so having all levels was helpful.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. The ITBS test is a big deal around here By Qumarry Tests are no fun. I've learned that much in my academic career so far. I know someday, I'm going to have to take really big ones like SATs and ACTs and before I get there, I really want to know what I'm doing in the test world. The ITBS test is a pretty serious test where I live and I wanted to do well on it. I thought a study guide would help me figure out what to expect so I bought this one hoping it would do just that. The guide was really great because it went through all of the subjects that would be on the test. It took my through various types of math problems I would see, reading items, science, spelling and other grammar issues, social studies and more. IT also had some sample questions from actual ITBS tests in the past, which really helped me see what types of things I would be up against when I took the test. I know the ITBS test isn't the hardest test I'll ever face, but I'm glad I took it seriously. By Jerry Clyde Phillips The growing pangs experienced by the United States during the first couple decades of the twentieth century provided the literary fodder for a whole new school of American authors. William Dean Howells, Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Poole, Theodore Dreiser and Henry James all added their comments regarding the dissolution of traditional American values by the rise of industrialization, capital accumulation, and the strengthening of a caste system based on wealth rather than on family name. Booth Tarkington treated this subject in his The Magnificent Ambersons, but added an interesting twist: the scene of this novel was not set in the large industrial and financial cities of the East, but in a mid-sized Midwestern city as if to demonstrate the pervasiveness of this social and cultural revolution.With this novel, Tarkington takes his demonstration one step further by writing about a middle class household in that same mid-sized Midwestern city. The Adams family, although comfortable enough, is excluded from the exclusivity shared by those families that are bound together by either name or wealth. Alice Adams is particularly chagrinned by this fact and atempts to imitate the actions and tastes of this exclusive group but can only act out daydreams in which she achieves the happiness and love that she desperately seeks. When she finally meets Arthur Russell, an elibible bachelor who belongs to that exlusive group, and futhermore, has a genuine affection for Alice, she can only fabricate lies in which she hopes to raise her own social station in his eyes. It is these pitiful, but humorous, attempts that give the novel much of its life and brilliance.Tarkington does a fine job in developing his characters: the romantic yet incorrigible Alice; her scheming and henpecking mother, who although acting for what she sees as Alice's own betterment, brings the family to ruin; her henpecked father who falls prey to his own duplicity and fanciful ambitions; and her brother who has sense enough to see through the banality of what Alice is trying to do, only to fall victim to his own weaknesses. Although this novel won Takington his second Pulitzer Prize, it is not as well known as The Magnificent Ambersons; however, it is in every way the earlier novel's equal. His depiction of middle class society during the 1920's is judicious, balancing satire with the author's own sympathetic treatment of character. The major highlight of the novel is Tarkington's brilliant description of the dinner at which the Adams family attempts to impress Arthur Russell, a scene which makes the reader simultaneously squirm and laugh out loud.Without giving away the ending, let it be said that the 1940s Hollywood film of the novel did Tarkington an injustice in that the filmmakers, intent on pleasing a movie audience, completely missed the point of the novel.

The hero is of course the heroine herself. Alice is sweet and lively. Yes, she is overly concerned with the typical "girly" things, especially at the beginning of the book, but she shows promising growth and strength of character.I have read a few other books by Booth Tarkington. I wouldn't put Alice Adams quite on the same level with The Magnificent Ambersons, but I liked it better than The Turmoil, which has an unconvincing happy ending. I got near the end of Alice Adams, and I started to dread the final chapter. I thought that there would either be another sappy, fake, happy ending, or it would be depressing. I was pleasantly surprised- it was neither!This is an old fashioned book, of course. You can tell it was written in 1921 by the way African-Americans are spoken about. But that is a reality of the times.

An upbeat and at times humorous story about a middle class family and their two early 20-year-old children ( one boy and one girl ). The girl, Alice Adams, is the focus of the story, as she struggles to be liked by the town's society folks. She doesn't have the social prestige nor the money to attract many beaus.This leads to turmoil, and Mrs. Adams tells her husband to leave the mediocre paying job he's had all his life to start his own company so they can be rich and pay their children "advantages". He does this, after many trepidations, but the basis of his newfound business is a stolen glue formula from his previous employer. This ultimately leads to his demise.There is a bit more to this story, but all in all, it is a story of class envy, snobbery, and greed. Tarkington's main point, however, seems to be that every dark tunnel of life ultimately has some other exit that inevatibly lead to light -- as even in the Adams's darkest hour their was hope yet.

About the Author English novelist and playwright Wilkie Collins was a prolific writer with a body of work comprising thirty novels, over sixty short stories, more than a dozen plays, and a wide range of non-fiction pieces. Collins is best known for his novels The Woman in White, an early sensation novela genre combining shocking gothic horror with everyday domestic settingsand The Moonstone, which is credited as one of the first modern mystery novels. In the 1850s Collins met Charles Dickens and the two struck up a friendship, which lead to Collins becoming a frequent contributor to Dickens s journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Many of his stories have been adapted for film, including Basil, A Terribly Strange Bed, The Moonstone and The Woman in White. Collins died in 1889 at the age of 65.

I love his style, his way with words and his unique way of inserting unexpected twists and turns into a tale. This book was no exception.At times it is difficult to tell the "good guys from the bad guys" and Collins is a master of leading you to the precipice and throwing the written curve ball. In this story, I missed that curve, absolutely did not see it coming and was delighted when all was revealed.This is a book I would enjoy reading again. Again, the price of this book, makes it a MUST read.What makes this special is that while Wilkie Collins may appear to have a "formula" for his stories, it is not as blatant as a Harlequin Romance or Danielle Steele's stories. In this book, the story gets on with it, it's not a hash and rehash of a lack of communication or misunderstanding between the main characters - the story moves the entire time. You won't be bored and you will not have to suspend your belief system in order to get through the story.Now, if you are reading this and waiting for me to tell you what the book is about - don't hold your breath - I'm not going to do it. If you want the story without reading the book, get the Cliff Notes. It's the end of summer, the skies are blue, there's still time for the beach or the pool or the chaise lounge on the patio or deck - have a staycation and go back to a different time and visit...the price of this ticket on Amazon - can't beat it.

The characters are quick thinking and charismatic. Neverland is described in amazing details and the dialogue is always witty and interesting. A great read for all ages, it is a book that can be put into only one word: FANTASTIC.

This is a really accessible book which covers a huge amount of ground - from basic memory skills, best ways to study to a whole host of memory techniques. I didn't think it would work so well for me, but now 3 days on, I can still recite back the 20 digit numbers in the book, as well as all the other lists in the book! I tried it out on my son (he's 12) with the list of 20 largest US cities - I just checked him on it there, and he's got them all correct. This will really make a huge difference to his study. This book is golden - just buy it

Memory is so vital and something that we so frequently underestimate until it is gone. I purchased this book in light of the fact that I needed to enhance my memory for work. I am a memorial service chief in terms of professional career, so recalling subtle elements is something that I must do regularly. I learned much that was new to me about the historical evolution of Southern foods through great cooks and their restaurants. This is a completely different take on regional cusine from all of the other "foodie" books that are out there. Celebrity chefs are nothing new and people of all generations have valued good food prepared with knowledge and art. This is a great book to read all at once, or at different times when focusing on the selected geographical locations.

Shield's narrative is as compelling as his research. This is a really important book if you're interested in history, food, and cooking, and Southern culture. Who new you could make molasses from watermelons? But the best aspect of the book is what Shields calls "rebooting a cuisine," it's food writing at its most impassioned AND informed. Looking forward to enjoying the many tastes that are being restored due to his work.
