This beguiling tale of a scandalous ménage à trois among England’s upper classes is a high society love story that combines memoir and biography into a fascinating, heady read in the vein of The Bolter and Portrait of a Marriage.

Among the glittering stars of British society, Sofka Zinovieff’s grandparents lived and loved with abandon. Robert Heber-Percy was a dashing young man who would rather have a drink than open a book, so his involvement with Jennifer Fry, a beautiful socialite famous for her style and charm, was not surprising. But by the time Robert met and married Jennifer, he had already been involved with a man—Gerald, Lord Berners—for more than a decade.

Stout, eccentric, and significantly older, Gerald was a well-known composer, and at home among scholars. He also owned one of Britain’s loveliest stately homes, Faringdon House in Oxfordshire. The two made an unlikely couple, especially because they lived together at Faringdon House when homosexuality was illegal. And then a pregnant Jennifer moved into Faringdon in 1942, creating a formidable ménage à trois.

In this gorgeous, entertaining narrative of bohemian aristocracy illustrated with dozens of photographs, Sofka Zinovieff probes the mysteries of her grandparents and the third man in their marriage. Who was Gerald, and what brought Robert and Jennifer together under his roof? Why did Jennifer marry Robert? Piecing together the complicated reality behind the scandals of revelry and sexuality, she finally allows old ghosts to rest.

From the Back Cover

Like The Bolter and Portrait of a Marriage, this beguiling, heady tale of a scandalous ménage à trois among England's upper classes combines memoir and biography to re-create an unforgettably decadent world.

Among the glittering stars of British society, Sofka Zinovieff's grandparents lived and loved with abandon. Robert Heber-Percy was a dashing young man who would rather have a drink than open a book, so his involvement with Jennifer Fry, a gorgeous socialite famous for her style and charm, was not surprising. But by the time Robert met and married Jennifer, he had already been involved with a man—Gerald, Lord Berners—for more than a decade.

Stout, eccentric and significantly older, Gerald was a composer, writer and aesthete—a creative aristocrat most at home in the company of the era's best and brightest minds. He also owned one of Britain's loveliest stately homes, Faringdon House, in Oxfordshire, which under his stewardship became a beacon of sybaritic beauty. Robert and Gerald made an unlikely couple, especially because they lived together at Faringdon House when homosexuality was illegal. And then a pregnant Jennifer moved into Faringdon in 1942, creating a formidable ménage à trois.

In this gorgeous, entertaining narrative of bohemian aristocracy, Sofka Zinovieff probes the mysteries of her grandparents and the third man in their marriage: Gerald, the complex and talented heir to a legendary house, its walls lined with priceless art and its gardens roamed by a bevy of doves, where he entertained everyone from Igor Stravinsky to Gertrude Stein. What brought Robert and Jennifer together under his roof, and why did Jennifer stay—and marry Robert?

Blending memoir and biography in her quest to lay old ghosts to rest, Zinovieff pieces together the complicated reality behind the scandals of revelry and sexuality. The resulting story, defined by keen insight, deep affection and marvelous wit, captures the glory and indulgence of the age, and explores the many ways in which we have the capacity to love.

Cofield Gerald Tyrwhitt-Wilson, Lord Berners, was the quintessential English eccentric throughout his life, a reputation that has only increased since his death over sixty years ago. The model for Lord Merlin in Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love, he loved art and music and displayed a considerable talent for both. His home, Faringdon House in Oxfordshire, was renowned for its comfort, fine cuisine, and hospitality that was enjoyed by Gertrude Stein, Igor Stravinsky, the Mitfords, the Lygons, Evelyn Waugh, and a galaxy of other social and literary stars. Lord Berners was known for his sense of humor and elaborate practical jokes, but he also had a sadder side: he was prone to depression and mercurial mood swings that could sometimes bedevil him for long periods.Lord Berners' emotional life was somewhat mysterious. He never married, but carried on long friendships with younger men, the longest lasting of which was with Robert Heber-Percy, the youngest son of a noble family. Handsome but without direction and extremely reckless, Robert (The Mad Boy of the title) met Lord Berners in 1930. Despite a nearly 30 year age gap, they became close friends and companions. Robert moved into Faringdon House and remained there for the rest of his life acting as Berners' companion, estate manager, and probable lover (since homosexuality was illegal in England, both men were understandably reticent about that aspect of their relationship.) Even when Robert married the beautiful young socialite Jennifer Fry this curious arrangement continued, with Jennifer living and giving birth to a daughter at Faringdon House.Sofka Zinovieff is the granddaughter of Robert and Jennifer, and this book is partly a biography of Lord Berners and her grandparents, partly a chronicle of the glamorous parade of writers, musicians, artists, and socialites who came to Faringdon House during its heyday, and partly the story of her own life as the literal heiress (Faringdon House is now hers) of these colorful people. It's an amazing story full of incident and dripping with one fascinating anecdote after another. It's also a sad story, because many of these talented, creative people struggled with depression, addictions, and tragedies, moving from one lover to another but rarely if ever finding true soul mates and contentment. As befits a chronicle of people who lived in beautiful surroundings, this book is physically a work of art, with heavy glossy pages, fine binding and end papers, and even a pink ribbon for a bookmark. There are many illustrations, mostly photographs of Lord Berners, Robert, and their families and friends; along with some modern photos of some of Faringdon's treasures. Lord Berners himself would be pleased with it.

Canning A MAGNIFICENT multi-biographical book by someone who knows the subjects intimately. Sofka Zinovieff writes with authority, facts and humor, and illustrates it with family photos that enhance your reading pleasure. Lord Berners and his "longtime companion," Robert Hebert-Percy, were the original Odd Couple, and "mad as a box of frogs." It is also a beautifully put together volume -- the fabric bookmark adds quite a bit of Old World class. I'm only halfway through the book and had to share my joy and pleasure in reading it with you! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In this sex comedy, Little Red Riding Hood meets the Big Bad Wolf, an ex-boyfriend she has never really gotten over, one day on her way to her grandmother's house. Seeing him again forces her to think about her previous relationship with the notorious bad boy and what she wants out of life and her men. As people are telling her she needs to get married and have children to be a successful woman, she is busy trying to live life on her own terms and by the motto, “It’s not the men in your life that matters. It’s the life in your men that counts.” Publisher’s Note Some retailers have asked that this book be placed in the erotica category. It is not really erotica. It is a sex comedy with sexual innuendo and double entendre. There may also have been some objection to the relationship between Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. This is not an example of monster sex or bestiality. This work was inspired by Mae West and Tex Avery’s Little Red Riding Hood cartoons where the wolf was more of a description of the man, even if he took more of the animated wolf form. Due to these concerns, Jack Gunthridge Studios, LLC and Summer Gleeson have decided to leave this story in the erotica category to appease these retailers.

History Made Magical

In A Historical Tour of Walt Disney World, Andrew Kiste not only pulls back the pixie dust curtain on some of the most iconic rides in the Magic Kingdom, but also pulls back the next curtain, revealing the historical and cultural influences that inspired Walt Disney and his Imagineers.

Did you ever wonder why Walt wanted a Jungle Cruise? Or how closely his pirates were based on real pirates? Or why the original conception for Tomorrowland didn't work out? Or how the Crystal Palace is really the work of a forgotten Victorian architect?

Learn the history BEHIND the history of such popular Magic Kingdom locations and attractions as:

  • Main Street, U.S.A.: It's always the Fourth of July on Main Street, and everything there has a purpose that might surprise you.
  • Jungle Cruise: Despite the skipper humor, this ride has its roots in European colonialism and the scramble for Africa.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Yo ho ho, me hearties, but did the real pirates of the Caribbean act like those in Adventureland?
  • Crystal Palace: The first two Crystal Palaces burned to the ground; how much is Disney's popular restaurant their carbon copy?
  • Tomorrowland: Disney's original plan to faithfully represent the future fell apart when the future didn't cooperate.

Find out where the Imagineers got THEIR ideas!

You can read these and find when Pirates of the Caribbean first went in , how long the ride is, what was Walt's involvement, how the attraction changed, etc. This nice little book by neophyte author Andrew Kiste covers all that- but more. See Andy (is it OK if I call you that Mr. Kiste?) is a History teacher, so not only do we get the history of the attraction or park, we get the history behind the history. So, for example, when Andy covers The Jungle Cruise we get the usual tidbit that Walt originally wanted it to have live animals (who'd be sleeping during the day), but also a little history of Colonial Africa, a mention of Heart of Darkness, African Queen and The African Lion- all sources for this wonderful attraction. When A Historical Tour of Walt Disney World: Volume 1 ( and I am really looking forward to Volume 2!) covers Pirates of the Caribbean, is also mentions a few historical inaccuracies of that E Ticket ride. We also get the Crystal Palace, Main Street, the Enchanted Tiki Room, the Carousel of Progress, and Tomorrowland. And so forth. Again, Bob McLain and his little independent Theme Park Press has brought a new author and a great book for Disney aficionados.

A great read for those sick of the same old recycled By Disney Fan A great read for those sick of the same old recycled, rehashed reviews of Disney World. Rather than being yet one more book detailing the history of the construction of the theme park, this book details the actual history that influenced imagineers as they designed the iconic attractions highlighted in the book (and yes, previous reviewer, it's imagineers). The book not only gave me a new perspective on various attractions but, better yet, it made the history behind them relevant and interesting. The author obviously loves Disney and loves history and combines the two into a fascinating (and very in-depth) study. I highly recommend this book, especially if you're a Disney fanatic hungry for something new.

Imagine a tour given by a history teacher By Martin J Moore Instead of the typical 20-something tour guide, speaking from a pre-approved script, imagine a tour given by a history teacher. You learn the history that is included in the ride. You see the background that was included by the imagineers. You find the facts hidden in plain sight. As with some history lectures it can be slow in a few spots. But overall it is a very interesting read.

In the small canton of Aargau, in Switzerland, on a rocky bluff of the Wulpelsberg, there still remains an old baronial castle, called Habsburg, or Hawk's Castle. It was reared in the eleventh century, and was occupied by a succession of warlike barons, who have left nothing to distinguish themselves from the feudal lords whose castles, at that period, frowned upon almost every eminence of Europe. In the year 1232 this castle was occupied by Albert, fourth Count of Habsburg. He had acquired some little reputation for military prowess, the only reputation any one could acquire in that dark age, and became ambitious of winning new laurels in the war with the infidels in the holy land. Religious fanaticism and military ambition were then the two great powers which ruled the human soul. With the usual display of semi-barbaric pomp, Albert made arrangements to leave his castle to engage in the perilous holy war against the Saracens, from which few ever returned. A few years were employed in the necessary preparations. At the sound of the bugle the portcullis was raised, the drawbridge spanned the moat, and Albert, at the head of thirty steel-clad warriors, with nodding plumes, and banners unfurled, emerged from the castle, and proceeded to the neighboring convent of Mari. His wife, Hedwige, and their three sons, Rudolf, Albert and Hartman, accompanied him to the chapel where the ecclesiastics awaited his arrival. A multitude of vassals crowded around to witness the imposing ceremonies of the church, as the banners were blessed, and the knights, after having received the sacrament of the Lord's Supper, were commended to the protection of God. Albert felt the solemnity of the hour, and in solemn tones gave his farewell address to his children. "My sons," said the steel-clad warrior, "cultivate truth and piety; give no ear to evil counselors, never engage in unnecessary war, but when you are involved in war be strong and brave. Love peace even better than your own personal interests. Remember that the counts of Habsburg did not attain their heights of reputation and glory by fraud, insolence or selfishness, but by courage and devotion to the public weal. As long as you follow their footsteps, you will not only retain, but augment, the possessions and dignities of your illustrious ancestors." The tears and sobs of his wife and family interrupted him while he uttered these parting words. The bugles then sounded. The knights mounted their horses; the clatter of hoofs was heard, and the glittering cavalcade soon disappeared in the forest. Albert had left his ancestral castle, never to return. He had but just arrived in Palestine, when he was taken sick at Askalon, and died in the year 1240... This is the history of the House of Habsburg and its rise to power and dominance in the lands of Austria.

By redhead As is true of most historical accounts, one almost needed a family tree to keep track of the individuals, their relationships and interactions. The powerful...be they religious or political....were not spared unsettling analysis as they moved across the landscape using the human and material resources available without thought to the consequences to mankind or environment. The word "Peace" seemed to be a nebulous concept never to be achieved, Double dealings, convenience marriages, slippery alliances were the means to the end desired by the most powerful at the moment. I appreciated the author's exhaustive research and his commentary which rendered the book much easier to read than if it were mere facts.

Sometimes the author gets a bit into the weeds, but the subject is complicated, and the Habsburgs are an integral part of European history for many centuries.

THE Story of Portugal possesses a peculiar interest from the fact that it is to its history alone that the country owes its existence as a separate nation. Geographically, the little kingdom is an integral portion of the Iberian peninsula, with no natural boundaries to distinguish it from that larger portion of the peninsula called Spain; its inhabitants spring from the same stock as the Spaniards, and their language differs but slightly from the Spanish. Its early history is merged in that of the rest of the peninsula, and but for two great men, Affonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and John I., the founder of the house of Aviz, Portugal would not at the present day rank among the independent nations of Europe. The first of these monarchs created his dominions into a kingdom like Leon, Castile, and Aragon, and the latter encouraged the maritime explorations which gave the little country an individuality and national existence, of which it was justly proud. When Philip II. annexed Portugal in 1580, it was at least a century too late for the Portuguese to coalesce with the Spaniards. They had then produced Vasco da Gama and Alboquerque and other great captains and explorers, who had shown Europe the way to India by sea; and their tongue had been developed by the genius of Camoens and Sá de Miranda, from a Romance dialect, similar to those used in Gallicia, Castile, or Aragon, into a great literary language. Conscious of its national history, Portugal broke away again from Spain in 1640, and under the protection of England maintained its separate existence during the eighteenth century...

I lived there 3 years and will always love the country, and I am writing a novel set in Medieval Portugal. This book packs a dense amount of information in a compact book, yet manages to be a pleasant read.

It provides a good, short overview of Portuguese history. The author was a turn of the century Berkley Prof and the book reads as if it were written in the 1890s or so. (Also due to the date written the author obviously stops with the history at that time. I came into this knowing very little about Portuguese history so the book very adequately met my goals. It is a quick easy read and if you are looking for a quick overview I recommend the book (also the price is right). It did have a somewhat preachy tone (typical of books of that error and some minor dates were wrong probably typos or perhaps coming from the ebook version. I did not feel these were severe enough to warrant not recommending the book. The book is also a quick read. (I read the kindle version).

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not worth the time By Mauricio Barbosa Some unexcusable errors like the return of D. João VI to die in Brazil, along with changes in names and ridiculous "portuguese" language quotes show how superficial was his research on the subject and do not recommend this as a serious work

By Jules-Mighty Tired Mom 4.5 out of 5 starsThis story in the BDSM Billionaire series takes the "classic" theme of the boss seducing his employee to a whole new level. I loved the build up to when Lola and Sebastian meet. Playroom action is super steamy...I wouldn't mind cleaning his place for free if it meant a session in the play room on a daily basis. Again the heroine is surprisingly well developed for the length of the story and her internal conflict just makes what happens with Sebastian that much hotter!

We might be from different worlds, but passion and desire has brought us closer than ever. . .

When my mother married Ted Herridge, we moved to Park Avenue, one of the wealthiest and most prestigious addresses in the world. However, I never fit into that world nor did I want to be part of it. I just wish I could dismiss my feelings for Ted's son and the boy I grew up with, Richard, that easily. . . But with his devastating good looks, including gorgeous dimples, ignoring Richard is easier said than done. And it gets more difficult after I drop out of my Ivy League college to become a flight attendant at Herridge Air, where Richard is the president of the company. I haven't seen him in over a year after an accidental and all-too-brief passionate encounter between us. I'm determined to keep things professional between us, but Richard has other ideas in mind, like picking up where we left off. . .

It's erotica so there's plenty of hot scenes but works as a great story as well.Fortunately, the writer knows how to mesh story and hotness together so the pay off is so much better.Due to outside circumstances, I was left with 1/2 the story unfinished and constantly wondered what was going to happen. A very rare event indeed so kudos to the author for doing that.Thumbs up and I'll look for more stories from this author.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Engaging and Mesmerizing! By R.E. Hargrave Long time friends turned lovers: this is the heart of Caught in the Middle. While it sounds simple, Barker’s delivery is anything but. Instead, it's an erotic tale packed with emotional surprises and plenty of plot. Oh, and there’s the bonus twist of there being not two, but three parties involved in said transitioning relationship. When Erin lets down her walls after a particularly trying week of residency, she finds herself caught between two very different, but lovable, men: Simon and Jack. It doesn’t take Erin long to realize that both can offer her something she wants, and needs. With Jack she has a past; years of friendship has resulted in them learning each other to the core and building a trust and respect that can only be gained with time. But Simon is her present as he begins introducing her to the finer points of BDSM, letting her into his secret world. She thrives on the therapeutic outlet it becomes in dealing with her struggles as a young, single woman, pulling long hours~and paying off enormous debts~in pursuit of her medical career. What starts as a frolic of physical release quickly escalates, blurring lines. Erin is unprepared when her need and respect of the two men shifts, and romantic feelings begin creeping in . . . for both Simon and Jack. With so many nuances and lifestyle adjustments, bumps in the road are expected, but I was floored with how smooth, how seamlessly the story shifted between scenes and moved forward. Well-written and well-edited, always a plus in my book, Caught in the Middle had me laughing, getting angry, longing for my own session, and even crying. This story has it all. It portrays the BDSM lifestyle with class and grace, yet has no shortage of gratuitous sex for the erotica lover. The philosophical angle~exploring the mental, social, and emotional dynamics while this trio progresses~is insightful, letting the reader enjoy the story and, in my case, be left rooting for Simon, Jack, and Erin to make it.Kira Barker’s debut novel is engaging and brilliant, and has left me anticipating the next installment in the We Kinky Three series.*Content warning: story does include m/m scenes, m/f/m scenes, and assorted bondage and discipline scenes. If these aren't your thing, this story may not be for you. If you're curious or open-minded, please give it a shot!**I was gifted a copy of the book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

She gives you just what the Doctor ordered, or will be at least prescribing!! I loved how I could picture exactly what Kira was trying to portray in her writing. Page by page and scene by scene, I couldn't stop wondering where these three were heading in the end. Just when you think you know how something will end up, the ball gets dropped and everything is placed in jeopardy. Kira managed to keep the angst to a minimum, love scenes hot, hot, hot and such a balanced, harmonized flow, it was hard to stop and left me wanting more of these three in the future. I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did!!!!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Too clinical and lacked feeling By Jennifer Schaber There was a lot of good and a lot of bad in this one for me. You have 3 friends that have known each other for so long - which is great. Jack and Erin since they were children. Simon is added to the mix several years later. Jack and Erin's relationship is basically a fun and carefree friendship. They tease and pick on each other - almost as siblings would. I love this! Erin is doing her residency in a hospital, Jack works in IT and Simon is a writer. Their professions are as diverse as their personalities, and they all compliment each other well. There is a 4th friend (Kara), but she's not around for much of the book. Erin's attending a party at Jack and Simon's house, when Simon mentions that Jack is chasing away the men she normally talks to because he wants to have sex with her - OH, and so does Simon. She hangs around until the party is over to talk about the possibility of a menage. Simon reveals that he is a Dom and is into the S&M portion of BDSM and that she would need to be sober for the menage event. The next day, the 3 of them have a strange menage with a little bondage and impact play. The scene really did nothing for me. There was some passion, but I was never relly pulled in. Afterwards, Simon offers to be her Dom of sorts and Erin agrees. He says that he's not that into protocal, but his actions don't reflect his words. He claims to be more into S&M, but there is an aweful lot of rope play involved suggesting that bondage really is important to him as well. Their S&M scenes are quite intense, but a bit lackluster for the reader if they're read a lot of other BDSM. There is another menage scene that occurs at the lake. This is the best sex scene in the book for me. You can actually feel the friendships, love, attraction, desire, etc. After that, there's a lot of Erin and Simon, but not very much Jack - which is a shame because I liked Jack best of all characters. Jack feels like he's been outcast from his friends and tries to manipulate things to get him back in good graces. The twists were surprising and when the truth comes out, everything changes/implodes. I took exception to the appologies and reconcilliations as well. It was just a little too quick, neat and tidy for the magnitude of what happened. The base story was good, the BDSM scenes lacked quality for me, there was virtually no after care and nearly no communication between Dom and Sub once the first week or two was over. Erin was more cluless than most people would be comfortable with, but with her residency schedule, her contact with her friends was quite limited. I appreciated the realistic characters and the ability to relate to them. Unfortunately, many of the situations they found themselves in were difficult for me to get behind. The story didn't always flow smoothly for my reading style, but there are many people who enjoyd tis read.

This book was published just in time for me to purchase a copy and work through the sample test. It is more challenging than the NCEES Transportation sample exam, but it is similar in style. No other am and pm sample exams out there that are pm transportation specific that I know of. Sat down for two 4 hour sessions with one hour break inbetween. Learned alot from the problems and gained a good sense of pacing. Highly recommneded. 4 stars only becasue I found two simple math errors in the solutions. Thanks Michael Frolov.

PDF Ebook The Tsar of Love and Techno: Stories, by Anthony Marra

From the New York Times bestselling author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena—dazzling, poignant, and lyrical interwoven stories about family, sacrifice, the legacy of war, and the redemptive power of art. This stunning, exquisitely written collection introduces a cast of remarkable characters whose lives intersect in ways both life-affirming and heartbreaking. A 1930s Soviet censor painstakingly corrects offending photographs, deep underneath Leningrad, bewitched by the image of a disgraced prima ballerina. A chorus of women recount their stories and those of their grandmothers, former gulag prisoners who settled their Siberian mining town. Two pairs of brothers share a fierce, protective love. Young men across the former USSR face violence at home and in the military. And great sacrifices are made in the name of an oil landscape unremarkable except for the almost incomprehensibly peaceful past it depicts. In stunning prose, with rich character portraits and a sense of history reverberating into the present, The Tsar of Love and Techno is a captivating work from one of our greatest new talents.

Review

National Book Critics Choice Award Finalist in FictionKirkus Reviews Best Fiction Books of 2015Praise for The Tsar of Love and Techno: “[E]xtraordinary… Each story is a gem in itself. But the book is greater than its parts, an almost unbearably moving exploration of the importance of love, the pull of family, the uses and misuses of history, and the need to reclaim the past by understanding who you really are and what really happened…He starts this miracle of a book by showing us how a system can erase the past, the truth, even its citizens. He ends by demonstrating, through his courageous, flawed, deeply human characters, how individual people can restore the things that have been taken away. And if you’ve been worrying that you’ve lost your faith in the emotionally transformative power of fiction – Mr. Marra will restore that, too.” —Sarah Lyall, The New York Times “Remarkable…Marra is a gifted writer with the energy and the ambition to explore the lives of characters whose experiences and whose psyches might seem, until we read his work, so distant from our own. Reading his work is like watching the restoration — the reappearance, on the page — of those whom history has erased.” —Francine Prose, Washington Post“This book will burn itself into your heart. It’s a collection of interlocking short stories that stand alone but also fit together, piece by delicate piece, to form an astonishing whole whose artfulness becomes increasingly clear as it goes on. The Tsar of Love and Techno swoops around in time and place, beginning in Stalinist Russia and ending somewhere in outer space in the near future. It’s funny, moving and beautiful, the perfect thing to read.” – New York Times   “Audacious… [an] ambitious and fearless [book], one that offers so much to enjoy and admire...Marra’s far-ranging, risky and explicitly political book marks him as a writer with an original, even singular sensibility.” – New York Times Book Review   “Genius...what makes this (dare I say) masterpiece so stunning is Marra’s clear love for his subject and insistence on infusing beauty into even the darkest places…It’s nothing short of extraordinary.” – San Francisco Chronicle   “Powerful…[an] ingenious book." – Wall Street Journal   "Marra’s nine stories, cunningly set out like strewn mosaic tiles that keep self-rearranging until they cohere into a complex, cathartic whole, demand to be read in order...Marra here emerges with an oxygenizing wisdom and an arsenal of wit as inexhaustible as it is unlikely.” – Boston Globe“Dazzling… with its multiple narratives and recurring characters it certainly recalls both Jennifer Egan's "A Visit From the Goon Squad" (a novel) and Elizabeth Strout's "Olive Kitteridge"(short stories). By the time you reach Marra's astonishing final story about Kolya, "The End" — set, a dateline tells us, in "Outer Space, Year Unknown" — the book has achieved a heart-rending cumulative power.” —Tom Beer, Newsday"Private acts of dissidence (a smuggled mix tape, say) become heroic in Anthony Marra's era-spanning portrait of the USSR." —Megan O'Grady, Vogue“Cobbled together as a sort of mixtape itself (with four stories under “Side A,” four under “Side B,” and a single-story intermission), Marra’s latest work is tender, touching, haunting at times and humorous at others—in short, a feat.”—Thomas Harlander, Los Angeles Magazine“The Tsar of Love and Techno is inventively structured, emotionally resonant, superbly rendered.” —Jane Ciabattari, BBC.com “The Tsar of Love and Techno is an intricately structured and powerful collection[and] showcases Marra’s wit and his gift for unforgettable details…The Tsar of Love and Techno is the work of an elegant and generous writer.”—Bookpage"Some books are love at first read, and this is one of them. Anthony Marra, author of A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, delivers his first collection of intimately tied stories (it kind of reads as a novel, actually), arranged into Side A and B and Intermission. With language as precise as a razor blade, Tsartakes us throughout Russia from 1937 to the present with a connected group of characters who, through their explosive escapades, demonstrate the peculiarities and nuances of life. It has everything: humor, action, suspense, drama — I'm going to go ahead and call it brilliant."—Meredith Turits, Bustle.com"Marra, in between bursts of acidic humor, summons the terror, polluted landscapes, and diminished hopes of generations of Russians in a tragic and haunting collection." —Booklist (starred)"With generosity of spirit and a surprising dash of humor, these artfully woven narratives coalesce into a majestic whole."—Library Journal (starred)“Powerful…strikingly reimagines a nearly a century of changes in Russia. [T]he book’s brilliance and humor are laced with the somber feeling that the country is allergic to evolution." —Kirkus Reviews (starred) “As in his acclaimed novel, Marra finds in Chechnya an inspiration for his uniquely funny, tragic, bizarre, and memorable fiction.” —Publishers Weekly (starred)"Love and betrayal reverberate through these nine deftly linked stories... With this collection, Marra has created a stunning portrait of a place and its indelible inhabitants."—Dawn Raffel, More“We know we are in the realm of fiction, but Marra makes it all feel viscerally real. He has mined modern Russian history for all it is worth to create a masterful novel.”—Russian Life Magazine “Treat yourself to these wise works of art set in Siberia, the USSR, and the heart.”—Refinery29Selected praise and accolades for Anthony Marra's A Constellation of Vital Phenomena: A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year New York Times Bestseller   National Book Award Longlist Selection A Washington Post Top 10 Book of the Year Washington Post Bestseller NPR Bestseller Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Winner An ALA Notable Book of the Year A #1 Indie Pick An Amazon.com Best Book of the Year A Publisher's Weekly Top 10 Books of the Year A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year A Library Journal Top 10 Book of the Year NBCC John Leonard Prize Winner  Named one of the Best Books of the Year by:  New York Magazine * Chicago Tribune *  Kansas City Star * GQ * NPR * Christian Science Monitor * San Francisco Chronicle * Cleveland Plain Dealer"Brilliant."—New York Times“A flash in the heavens that makes you look up and believe in miracles....Here, in fresh, graceful prose, is a profound story that dares to be as tender as it is ghastly, a story about desperate lives in a remote land that will quickly seem impossibly close and important....I haven’t been so overwhelmed by a novel in years. At the risk of raising your expectations too high, I have to say you simply must read this book.”—Ron Charles, Washington Post“Extraordinary....a 21st century War and Peace....Marra seems to derive his astral calm in the face of catastrophe directly from Tolstoy.”—Madison Smartt Bell, New York Times Book Review“A Constellation of Vital Phenomena is ambitious and intellectually restless....[Marra is] a lover not a fighter, a prose writer who resembles the Joseph Heller of Catch-22 and the Jonathan Safran Foer of Everything Is Illuminated.”—Dwight Garner, New York Times“Over and over again, this is an examination of the ways in which many broken pieces come together to make a new whole. In exquisite imagery, Marra tends carefully to the twisted strands of grace and tragedy....Everything in A Constellation of Vital Phenomena...is dignified with a hoping, aching heartbeat.”—Ramona Ausubel, San Francisco Chronicle

Writing that is genius and beautiful By Angela Every time I read a collection of short stories, I say the same thing in my review - that I'm not a lover of short stories, but I always have a good reason why I decided to read that particular collection . In this case , the very good reason is how much I loved Anthony Marra's , [book:A Constellation of Vital Phenomena|18428067]. I am so very glad that I didn't miss out because I prefer longer fiction . I don't know how I can possibly do justice in this review to the brilliant story telling and beautiful writing here .The opening story "The Leopard", is about an art censor - who airbrushes a ballerina out of a photograph , fixes photographs to make Stalin look better. He even obliterates his brother's face from a family photo because his brother's religious beliefs made him a traitor in the harsh environment of the communist regime in 1937 USSR. Yet he paints his brother's face in the background of every painting he is charged with altering .Fast forward to Siberia in 2013 to the "Granddaughters " the story of the ballerina's granddaughter ( yes the ballerina from the first story ) and her friends. This one is told in the first person plural which is a mechanism that works beautifully. My favorite story until I read the next and the next .These stories depict the political and social landscape of Russia from 1937 to the more recent chaotic aftermath after the break up of the USSR in the details of the lives of these characters with beautifully rendered connections between the stories through the characters and a painting. Just when you think you'll never see a character again, they come alive once more in another story . I marveled at the connections from one to another - characters, images , themes - it becomes not quite a novel but one long story about loss and relationships and love and family and art and freedom. I won't be any more specific here on the linkages because this is one of the best things about this book and should be discovered by the reader who might like me think - omg - as some things come full circle . I cannot recommend this enough to anyone who appreciates writing that is both genius and beautiful . I especially recommend it to those who loved Marra's novel . I can't give it less than 5 stars . Beautiful Writing of Interlocking Stories By Just My Op I am more of a novel reader than a short story reader, but I loved the author's A Constellation of Vital Phenomena so much that I couldn't wait to read these stories. And to me, it read more like a novel than just a collection of short stories. The stories are all interconnected, and loop back and forward through stories of characters I've come to love.Mr. Marra's writing is extraordinary. Without being flowery, it is remarkably, beautifully descriptive. The characters are both hopeful and resigned.I didn't mark passages as I was reading, so I flipped the book open at random to look for an example. The first thing I read:“Back in my room, I scanned my modest belongings. Bottles filled with dusk light stood in the corner. The long-rotting carcass of my academic career sprawled across the desk.” And then, “There I was, Napoleon's height and I couldn't even conquer the apartment WC. I slipped the two pickle jars into the duffle, the Polaroid into my pocket, and then slipped myself out the door.”There is a painting that keeps reappearing, censors who fail to properly censor, and a mix tape to be used only in case of emergency. Ballerinas and brothers. These stories are not a straightforward telling of a story, but tell a story they do, in a winding, meandering path, sprinkled with humor and soul, and all the more beautiful for the journey they take.I was given an advance reader's copy of this book for review. The quotes may have changed in the published edition.

The Nutcracker's Cosmonautic March By W Perry Hall I normally find it difficult to complete even half of a short story collection, except on the rare occasion the stories are intertwined by characters and events. I'll read 1 or 2 but eventually go back to the traditional arc of Freytag's Pyramid, invest myself in it, and then forget about the collection of nice, but not compelling, stories.Comparatively, THE TSAR OF LOVE AND TECHNO instantly enthralled me because the first story is both chilling and compelling and these stories had me eager to discover the interlacing threads and see the completed whole. That is to say, the reader learns through each story which characters are primary, and discovers that character has returned in a later story in some other context. The stories so complement the others that, aside from the 1st, 3d and 4th stories, I'm not sure the others would have nearly the impact they do had any one of them stood on its own outside the context of the collection. I enjoyed the entire collection excepting the second story. Should you get annoyed by the shrews, stick with the book; while irritating in itself, the second story adds pieces to the whole. In hindsight, the structure seems hard to have pulled off, but I couldn't tell at the time because of the seeming simplicity of each story (which was done brilliantly). These stirring stories center on an uncle and nephews, a pair of brothers, a couple, a mother (and daughter), a girl (and grandmother) and a painting, and occur variously at three locales of the former Soviet Union (Leningrad/St. Petersburg, Kirovsk [in Siberia to the east of China] and within Chechnya). The first story is set in 1937 during the Stalin purge [“In order to become the chisel that breaks the marble inside us, the artist must first become the hammer," said the Soviet censor of paintings and photos.] The remaining tales occur primarily between the mid-1990s and 2013. They hit on a wide array of subjects like censorship, Russian art, the breakup of the Soviet Union, Tchaikovsky, Tolstoy, Russians in Chechnya, mine fields, the nuclear age and outer space, and art (in life and capturing life in art). IMAGES - mix tapes, leopard bikini bottoms, a ballerina, a painting of an empty Chechen field in the afternoon, a wolf. This magnificent collection had me reflecting how circumstances can change people so that basically good people have the capacity to do evil, but how, in all but the most aberrant among us, there's a reservoir of basic goodness in the face of evil. It made me consider the fleeting nature of life, what impression do we really and truly make on a planet we visit so shortly, how small each of us is in relation to time and space, and how Art, above most else, can transcend life.Anthony Marra is a master at evoking sympathy for characters so foreign to a reader in the U.S., and in his ability to simultaneously create both sympathy and contempt for a character. Even in short stories, knots of complexity surround the six major characters, making them so human, their sentiments so real.In my opinion, this book is even better than Mr. Marra's debut novel "A Constellation of Vital Phenomena." I believe he has the potential to write a novel for the ages. No exaggerating. On a side note, I think Marra made up for his debut's hard-to-recall title and its washed out cover with his new Hip title and even Hipper cover.
