*Includes pictures *Includes historic accounts describing Yosemite *Includes a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “Yosemite Valley, to me, is always a sunrise, a glitter of green and golden wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space.” – Ansel Adams “Some of the natural world is appealing, some of it is terrifying, and some of it grosses us out. Modern people don't want to be dropped naked into a swamp. We want to tour Yosemite with our water bottles and G.P.S. devices. The natural world is a source of happiness and fulfillment, but only when prescribed in the right doses.” – Paul Bloom “If for a moment you are inclined to regard these taluses as mere draggled, chaotic dumps, climb to the top of one of them, and run down without any haggling, puttering hesitation, boldly jumping from boulder to boulder with even speed. You will then find your feet playing a tune, and quickly discover the music and poetry of these magnificent rock piles -- a fine lesson; and all Nature's wildness tells the same story -- the shocks and outbursts of earthquakes, volcanoes, geysers, roaring, thundering waves and floods, the silent uprush of sap in plants, storms of every sort -- each and all are the orderly beauty-making love-beats of Nature's heart.” – John Muir The United States is full of natural wonders, but few remain unspoiled by man as much as Yosemite National Park, a 750,000 square acre park near the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Despite being inhabited by people for nearly 3,000 years, the relatively remote spot helped ensure that even as America expanded west, the Yosemite area avoided being settled or exploited like so many other areas on the frontier. Although it is a World Heritage Site and has been visited by millions of people, nearly the entire park remains wilderness, replete with features like waterfalls, giant sequoia groves, mountains, and some of America’s most impressive granite cliffs. Given its natural wonders, it should come as no surprise that the area attracted some of the 19th century’s most famous conservationists, including John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt. Muir in particular was instrumental in having Yosemite declared a national park, and he would wax eloquently about the area and the fight to preserve it: “The making of gardens and parks goes on with civilization all over the world, and they increase both in size and number as their value is recognized. Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike. This natural beauty-hunger is made manifest in the little windowsill gardens of the poor, though perhaps only a geranium slip in a broken cup, as well as in the carefully tended rose and lily gardens of the rich, the thousands of spacious city parks and botanical gardens, and in our magnificent National Parks—the Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia, etc. Of course, conservationists weren’t the only ones attracted to the region. Yosemite’s wide array of diversity ensures that different species of plant and animal life call the area home, and its various climates make it one of America’s most unique ecosystems. In fact, dozens of endangered species still reside within the park, and while they are protected to an extent, many are still adversely affected by everything from motor vehicle accidents to forest fires. Yosemite National Park: The History of California’s Most Famous Park traces the history of the region and its establishment as a park. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about Yosemite like never before, in no time at all.

By Don Kidwell With exception of the cover and one single photo at the introduction showing "Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View" there were no other photos produced making this one of the more disappointing Charles River Editors books I've come across. From a historical aspect of providing quality narrative it did a fine job, but don't advertise passages like "full of natural wonders" and "wonderful depth and grandeur of its sculpture" and then not show an adequate number of photos to demonstrate such.

After a late night out with friends and only a couple hours of sleep, she is woke up from her sleep early by the sound of a moving truck backing in. She is less than thrilled to have another set of neighbors moving in. That all changes when she sees a sexy older man in the back of the moving truck. She feels compelled to meet and talk to him. They introduce themselves over coffee that Layne offers him and they make quick friends. Layne goes over to his place later in the evening to help him unpack some of his things. Not everything that gets unloaded that night are things that came out of the back of the moving truck. This book has a little over 4,200 words and is packed full of adult content. Instead, she's delighted to find the sexy, older man Scott has moved in. Scott's an Air Force First Sergeant and when Layne's desires blossom, she offers to help him out.The First Sergeant is in for quite the help as the sexy Layne gives him the friendliest welcome he's ever had!Fun with the First Sergeant is a hot, sexy read. Layne has a lot of fun teasing the First Sergeant. Lucky for him, she' knows how to be quite neighborly, and while Scott maybe older, he can keep up with the wild gal!

The Big House: Story of a Southern Family (Book 2), by J. Keck

About the Author Coming of age in California, J. Keck grew up with a Southern heritage inside the house, and a West Coast identity outside of what the family called the Big House. The home was a gathering place for extended family and friends, many of whom were expatriate Southerners as well. Between the warmth and storytelling of the home, J. Keck has been inspired by the culture and tales of many fine and memorable characters. Numerous trips and stays to visit relatives and family holdings, along with a nearly three-year stay in Texas, further deepened his appreciation and understanding of the culture. Attending both Texas and West Coast colleges and university, J. Keck received a degree in Journalism, an advanced degree in Psychology, and minors in Business, Anthropology and Geography. Once having entered business, writing became a pastime for personal pleasure until the publication of one of his short stories in a cultural magazine. Additional publications of his writings followed: a short story, “The Dark Forest”; his novella, “Homeless: The Dollmaker’s Web,” and his recent novel, “The Big House: Story of a Southern Family (Book I).” Currently, J. Keck is working on “The Big House: Story of a Southern Family (Book III).” The joy and challenge of writing has propelled J. Keck into a new and exciting career: Author.

It has twists you weren't expecting, and how the characters evolved in these twists and turns caught you by surprise. Mr. Keck needs to put this ither on the Big screen, or the small screen, so that more can see it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love this book! By kenia The Big House Book III read the first book sometime last year and I absolutely loved it; therefore, I was very excited for the second book. Just like in the first book, the author manages to clasp the reader’s attention instantaneously and never fails to deliver with the story line. One of my favorite things about the author’s writing is the ability of story and character introduction, the reason that I’m saying this is because some readers will take the stories within the book and think that the book is just a compilations of short stories; however, if you’re a careful and deeper reader you’ll understand that every story and every piece of history that is told in the book has a purpose and deeper meaning for the evolution of the main character “Minnie”, and the understanding of the concept of time, how things were back then and how things are now ( in the story of course). Moreover, I was excited to see how Minnie’s character has mature from the first book to the second book. It is clear that she is no longer a little girl and what it is more evidently is that everything she went through has definitively made her stronger, her courage is unequivocally her best trait for it has made her who she is now. The second book is unquestionably great and I truly enjoyed reading it. I honestly can’t wait for the third book to come out and find out what surprises, truth, and lies there will be to discover.Kenia Padilla

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved this second book By Stella Hamilton I loved this second book. I was waiting, anxiously, to find out what would happen to Minnie. To Marie. I wanted to know if Minnie ever became friends with her mother. I wanted to know if Minnie would ever be happy. I was not disappointed. I read this sequel and all the wonderful characters came flooding back. Minnie had changed. And I was happy to find her strong-willed and motivated to become her own person. This book was brimming with Southern charm and plenty of twists and turns to keep me wondering what would happen next! The writer led me to a long-ago time where women had little choices and many disappointments. I like a story where the heroine prevails. Where she learns her lessons quickly. The main character will fall and get back up and I love her for trying so hard. Excellent read. I gave this book to myself for Christmas. It was one of my favorite gifts. Kudo's to the author.

The Europeans: A sketch is a short novel by Henry James, published in 1878. It is essentially a comedy contrasting the behaviour and attitudes of two visitors from Europe with those of their relatives living in the ‘new’ world of New England. The novel first appeared as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly for July–October 1878. James made numerous minor revisions for the first book publication. Eugenia and her brother Felix arrive in Boston. The next day Felix visits their cousins. He first meets Gertrude, who is shirking attendance at church. He stays over for dinner. The next day Eugenia visits them. Three days later their uncle Mr Wentworth suggests they stay in a little house close to theirs. Felix suggests making a portrait of his uncle. When Mr. Wentworth refuses, he makes plans to do a painting of Gertrude instead. The latter walks into Mr Brand again and bursts out crying when he asserts that he still loves her. She then sits for Felix to do his painting of her, and he reproaches his American relatives for being very puritanical.

The Europeans, by Henry James

Review “He is as solitary in the history of the novel as Shakespeare in the history of poetry.” —Graham Greene --Quill Pen

About the Author Henry James is one of the greatest American novelists, and spent his last years in England. Among his numerous works are The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl, his two masterpieces.

From AudioFile This companion to THE AMERICAN, though half as long and complex, pleases from first to last. Reading with an easy grace and cosmopolitan assurance, Eleanor Bron perfectly matches James's polished prose and urbane protagonists. Coming to Boston from Europe, Felix and his elder sister, the Baroness Eugenia, appear to mystify and dazzle their modest relations but really are perplexed by them. Bron's reading is alert with nuance. She alternates between energy and ennui as character or occasion dictates, voicing the characters lightly, in keeping with James's strong narrative control. In so doing, she mirrors perfectly both James's tense and ambiguous world, as well as his masterful control of that world. P.E.F. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

The Europeans seems indeed to be merely "a sketch", a practice piece, worth reading only for James's masterly prose and for occasional sparkles of wit. Or perhaps it should be taken as James's effort to 'cash in' on the perennial market for romance novels for women readers, a market that was a lucrative in the 19th C as it remains today. That latter interpretation, I confess, is hindered by the absence of passion exhibited in any the four entangled 'love stories' of the narration. Marriages do occur eventually; I hope that's not too much of a spoiler, since I won't disclose how many or whom. One could also interpret The Europeans as a study of miscommunication. The title characters, a sister and brother whose mother was American but who have 'grown up' as thorough Europeans, come to visit their American cousins whom they've never met or known, who live quiet, sober lives in a Massachusetts village. The reader is 'encouraged' to suppose that the sister is both fleeing a milieu in Europe that has gone sour and seeking a 'fortunate' matrimonial opportunity. The American cousins and their social set are people of substantial means and insubstantial culture. Perplexed in every way by the arrival of such exotic relatives, nonetheless they generously welcome the travelers into their quaint puritanical family circle. What ensues is a minuet of misperceptions and miscues.James seems to have learned a good deal about the structural mechanics of novel-writing in the short time between "The American" and "The Europeans". Whereas in the former, he sometimes labors over describing a character in excessive external detail, in the latter he allows his characters to portray themselves through actions and dialogue. It's a subtler style of narrative, on a par with the polished best of Jane Austen or George Eliot. But of course the 19th C British 'novel of manners' was the model of all of Henry James's novels, a form he never abandoned. It's also quite plausible that James consciously intended "The Europeans" as a sequel to "The American," a thematic coda. It's not as exciting or insightful as its immediate predecessor, and it's barely a prophecy of the brilliance James would soon achieve in "The Bostonians". But it's too artfully written not to be entertaining as a display of craft.

A pair of siblings from Europe, brother Felix and sister Eugenia, have come to America to visit their relatives, hoping to find them rich. The two can be called adventurers, gold-diggers. He is a sort of bohemian, while she is married to a German prince, who is about to get rid of her. (At the time, Germany had an abundance of princes.)They find their relatives a large, reasonably well to do, well established family in the outskirts. The Wentworths are puzzled by the unexpected visitors, and behave with decency. There are some unmarried young cousins in the family. Felix is a charmer and reacts positively. Eugenia is a more difficult character and for her the cultural shock is a problem, as it is for the father of the Wentworth family. He is the brother of the visitors' mother. Relations were not close in the past. Eugenia's mother had run away at 20 into an unapproved marriage with a European.Like with James' previous novel about an American in Europe, the main subject here is the loss of meaning in cross-cultural communication. That is always good for various amusements of the mild to the hilarious kind. This book is more of the mild kind, which is not meant as a criticism. All in all, we have an interesting but not a great little novel about social affairs of the better classes in the 19th century. It lives mainly by the master's sparkling language. The people in the story are not all interesting. I would single out the two main women for being `interesting': Eugenia, the baroness, is a thoroughly discredited person who works hard at keeping up appearances, even to her brother, and probably even to herself. She lies shamelessly to everybody. While she rarely tells complete lies, she is also seldom completely truthful. The other interesting woman is Gertrude Wentworth. She puzzles us mostly through James' handling of her. She appears early like a person that makes you wonder if she is capricious or simple. She is certainly not shown as a particularly attractive woman, not by looks nor by her acts. Then during the plot, descriptions by the wise man in the off stop and Gertrude seems to become a totally different person: smart, attractive, headstrong ... the point is that these impressions are all given by other protagonists and we don't need to believe them. Has James planted mistrust in his people's statements and opinions? The last chapter is a roundup of characters and it ties up open ends, providing satisfaction to some and frustration to others. It is not convincing as a narrative device, to me. It reminds me of James' later failed attempts to become a stage writer. Chapter 12 here is like a less than interesting romantic play. I can do without those.

By A Customer Europeans presents a quick summation of why Henry James is among the most illustrious and celebrated American authors. His writing in this book surveys the interaction of European society with early, austere, and moralisitc American culture. For historians and sociologists alike, as well as avid fans of lit., James illuminates interactions of the respective characters with poised rhetorical grace, and his sketches are highly readable, understandable, and enjoyable. James can be an intimidating author to approach for people like me (a college sophomore), who are beginning to appreciate the pleasure of reading such fine authors; reading a short, yet engaging, work such as Europeans is an excellent jumping off point to a later appreciation and enjoyment of the author's more prodigious epics, such as The Portrait of the Lady. I can say that after reading Europeans, I have more confidence and comfort taking off the shelf a longer work by James, simply in knowing that I can comprehend his shorter designs. I also recommend for those like me to try out his short fiction. Concluding, reading this work has made me very excited to read further works by James, as I plan to read the entirety of his literary output. It is the brilliance and charm of Europenas that has instilled in me this excitment.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The real 1960s.... By Terry Tyler I was looking forward to reading the third part of Judith Barrow's warts-and-all saga about the working class Howarth/Booth/Schorrman family living in Wales and northern England. The first part took place in WW2, the second in 1950, and Living in the Shadows takes us into the next generation, in the late 1960s.These books are very much an every day story of ordinary people, a bit like listening to The Archers or watching Emmerdale Farm before it lost its 'Farm'; I'm sure someone makes someone else a cup of tea every ten pages! They will hold a great nostalgic appeal for those who have lived through these times in similar circumstances, which explains their popularity. But they're more than just a real life drama; Judith Barrow has a clever and subtle way of showing the attitudes of the time amongst Mr and Mrs Average, rather than giving them a gloss, like a nostalgia programme on TV; this, for me, is their greatest strength. So, the 1960s... it wasn't all free love, Union Jack minis and Twiggy; the atmosphere of the war years of the 1940s and the struggle back in the 1950s prevailed. The extended family in this book come face to the face with scenarios of the type that were brushed under the carpet fifty years ago, ie, homosexuality and domestic violence. The storyline I found the most interesting was that of eighteen year old Victoria, who experienced the sinister side of the hippie movement; it shows how young people, eager to take on new trends, can be manipulated and taken advantage of. Oddly enough, I had only recently watched a few TV programmes about Charles Manson and his strange commune of brainwashed young women; Victoria's tale rang all too true.As for the older members of the family, the loss of one of them near the end made me feel very sad, even bringing a tear or two to my eye; this bit was very well written indeed. I suspect this is not the last we shall see of this family!

After writing emotionally moving books like Pattern of Shadow, Silent Trauma and Changing Patterns, Judith Barrow’s latest book is “ Living in the Shadows” - and it continues to keep the reader glued till the end !The story is very well written and is narrated brilliantly ! Living in the Shadows took me into a completely different world. All the characters came alive as I started reading the book - the Schormanns, Howarths, Booth, Shuttleworths, worths - and their fears, insecurities, thoughts and actions – turned almost real !The story is set between 16th September to 10th November, 1969, and it develops mostly around and in Ashford, Llamroth, Bradlow, Manchester. There are many chapters (89) and one wonders why ? I believe this creates a very nuanced picture of the moments in lives of people in the story. It helps to create a multi-dimensional and vivid picture for the reader to enjoy ! I liked this way of telling the story !Living in the Shadows is a hard-to-put-down-till-over book ! An emotional drama not worth missing !

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing By Molly Flanders This novel is a wonderful family and historical drama. Told in short episodic chapters focusing on different characters it manages to illustrate life in Britain / Wales in 1969. Filled with descriptive detail and plotted in an atmospheric and authentic way it keeps a great pace all the way through and brings everything together nicely.Well-chosen and effortlessly drawn characters show life in the 1960s, and in particular for the Schormann’s and their extended family, whose complex story reaches back two volumes. An unpleasant encounter in the maternity ward right at the beginning of the book hints at the shadows of the title, but there are other storylines, such as the run-away daughter – which I found particularly well written. The novel shows the clash of rural, old-fashioned and modern living ideas while maintaining a suspenseful dramatic curve in the drama part of this work of art.Moving, engaging, rich and highly recommended.

The years leading to World War I were the 'Age of the Dreadnought'. The monumental battleship design, first introduced by Admiral Fisher to the Royal Navy in 1906, was quickly adopted around the world and led to a new era of naval warfare and policy. In this book, Roger Parkinson provides a re-writing of the naval history of Britain and the other leading naval powers from the 1880s to the early years of World War I. The years before 1914 were characterised by intensifying Anglo-German naval competition, with an often forgotten element beyond Europe in the form of the rapidly developing navies of the United States and Japan. Parkinson shows that, although the advent of the dreadnought was the pivotal turning-point in naval policy, in fact much of the technology that enabled the dreadnought to be launched was a continuity from the pre-dreadnought era. In the annals of the Royal Navy two names will always be linked: those of Admiral Sir John 'Jacky' Fisher and the ship he created, HMS Dreadnought. This book shows how the dreadnought enabled the Royal Navy to develop from being primarily the navy of the 'Pax Britannica' in the Victorian era to being a war-ready fighting force in the early years of the twentieth century. The ensuing era of intensifying naval competition rapidly became a full-blooded naval arms race, leading to the development of super-dreadnoughts and escalating tensions between the European powers.Providing a truly international perspective on the dreadnought phenomenon, this book will be essential reading for all naval history enthusiasts and anyone interested in World War I.

McCoy Please note that the author, James Wycliffe Headlam , was a British scholar and public servant who contributed to the Versailles Treaty. He died in 1929, and this book was written in 1899. It is a classic, but does not benefit from modern access to additional documents, nor the perspective of a post war world. (If that's an advantage). Just so you know what you are getting.

Bismarck and European historyI By Risteard Mulcahy I Enjoyed this book despite its length and its rather confusing account of the difficulties encountered in bringing 36 Germanic states into a full German political federation. An understanding of Bismarck and his huge ocntribution to the formation of the German State is essential reading for any student of European history.

New, fully revised and edited edition. Jasper Tudor, born in secrecy in 1431, rose to become one of the key supporters of King Henry VI during the difficult period of English history known as the Wars of the Roses. Devoted to the Lancastrian cause and to his nephew Henry Tudor, Jasper's loyalty led him through a life full of adventure. When he was just six years old, Jasper's life was changed dramatically by the death of his mother, the dowager queen Katherine de Valois, and the arrest of his father Owen Tudor soon afterwards. Jasper and his older brother Edmund were called to court and by 1452 they became the first Welshmen to be elevated to the English peerage. Sadly, Edmund died in captivity in 1456, leaving Jasper to protect his brother's child, the future king Henry VII. Jasper's dedication to the Lancastrian cause took him through many of the well-known battles of the Wars of the Roses, including the historic victory at Bosworth. It is clear that Henry VII owed an enormous part of his success in claiming the throne in 1485 to his uncle, who was his closest adviser, confidante and mentor. In this detailed biography, Debra Bayani clearly shows that Jasper Tudor was a key figure in the tumultuous history of England, detailing his life from his birth in 1431 to his death in 1495. He can rightly be called the “Godfather of the Tudor Dynasty”. This edition includes a comprehensive appendix with contemporary Welsh poems translated into English for the first time, and many full page illustrations.

Very well written and researched biography By BridgetM This book is very well written and researched by the author and I can't find anything negative about it. Jasper’s story crabbed me from the moment I started until the end. I love all the (rare) pictures in the book, which aren’t very big but are spread throughout the book, which is something different from what we usually get with all images in the middle.Eventhough the author shows no clear bias, I feel the passion she has for the subject. I have read many books about the Wars of the Roses and biographies on most of the important characters of this time period but this one was one of the best biographies I’ve read.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. I realized that I was much better versed in stories from the Yorkist point of view By Eileen Krueger Jasper Tudor was an important player in the War of Roses and key to the eventual emergence of Henry Tudor as King Henry VII. The author lets the audience know right away that there is limited information that could be found about this key player in the emergence of the House of Lancaster. Nevertheless, she does a credible job using that information and providing a perspective of the War of Roses from the Lancastrian point of view. I realized that I was much better versed in stories from the Yorkist point of view, and I was pleased get a broader picture of the era. Readers should be aware, however, that many of the resources are written in Middle English, which could provide issues for many.

Egon Langhammer is one of the few living eye-witnesses to the horrors of WWII. His detailed, honest and intimate recollections give us a glimpse into the hidden world of life inside Nazi Germany for ordinary German citizens and Hitler’s cherished Aryan youth. It is an illuminating and unique perspective that must not be lost to the world. It is the account of how propaganda and fear are used on ordinary people to steal their souls and perpetrate genocide.

Just a middle class family's young sontelling about his family's existence and how they survived in Nazi Germany during the war years. He syncs it up with the historic factsbeautifully. It's very apolitical, just a family surviving in war time. I've actually met Egon Langhammer and know him through amutual friend. He's a very intelligent pleasant gentleman, a pleasure to know and be around.

Ruddick A very engaging heartwarming book from a man who has experienced more than most in his lifetime. It is refreshing to get the human side of events to put the war in context.

In The Heart of The Pine Barrens, Pemberton Township and Pemberton Borough have been intricately linked throughout time. Both towns owe their beginnings to the grist and saw mill industries supported by the excellent natural resources of the area. They owe their longevity to the determination of the founding fathers and their descendants.

As early as the 1820s, company towns had formed around the Pembertons' first mills and both communities were self-sufficient with stores, churches, schools and skilled craftsmen.

When steam plants in larger communities replaced water-powered mills, the Pembertons turned to service industries. Grand hotels were marketed to the wealthy for the healing power of surrounding cedar water lakes and fresh pine air in the township. The borough shed its company town beginnings in lining the main street with shops and services. Blueberry and cranberry farming replaced pig iron smelting and the creeks and lakes wending through both towns were retired from wheel turning to become leisurely retreats.

This debut novel is based on the true story of Carrie McGavock. During the Civil War's Battle of Franklin, a five-hour bloodbath with 9,200 casualties, McGavock's home was turned into a field hospital where four generals died. For 40 years she tended the private cemetery on her property, where more than 1,000 were laid to rest.

As a young, high spirited woman, she sat for a portrait wearing black, certainly not the done thing at the time. Ironically, black becomes the color of her life. She knows firsthand the loss of three beloved children and treats all the dead boys from the battle that raged outside her home as if they were her own.One of the most touching parts of the book is the true story about a Georgia family who traveled to Tennessee to bring their dead son home from Carrie's cemetery. After seeing how she lovingly cared for him, they decided to leave him in Tennessee returning only to bring Georgia dirt from their farm for his resting place. One read of this book is not enough.

A Meandering Look at the Battle of Franklin By Tamela Mccann This novel's premise intrigued me because I live close to Franklin, Tennessee, and have learned a good deal about the Battle of Franklin in recent years. McGavock is a well-known name around Nashville, which added to my interest. I eagerly picked this book up and dived in, prepared to meet the main characters and learn more about the battle and its aftermath, and previous reviews made the book that much more appealing. However, as I read, I found myself disappointed in the actual retelling of the battle itself; I was hoping for more action and deeper characterizations. The plot meanders between points of view and Carrie McGavock's motivations are particularly difficult to understand. On a personal level, I could delve into her darkness of depression over the loss of her children, but since it was a common occurrence in the mid 1800s, I found it a bit over-the-top. Her feelings for Zachariah are not in character and are never believable. Mariah is a strong character who never achieves her own voice and a few of the side stories seem forced as well. The novel finally achieves its goals in the last 100 pages as the focus for Carrie becomes clear and her determination shows. Hicks has a wonderful way with words but he needs to show the why of his characters rather than letting them stew in their own juices for much of the story. Overall this is a good book, but not as compelling as I'd hoped.

Drescher In 1991, after nine years in the Marine Corps, I settled in Franklin, Tennesee, the setting for Widow of the South. I had the privilege of meeting the man to whom Robert Hicks dedicated his novel, Marine Corps Vietnam veteran and Williamson County resident, Tom Martin, Jr. Mr. Martin was wounded in combat and confined to a wheelchair. Despite his condition, he looked surprisingly fit. Sad to say, like so many before and since, Mr. Martin died an untimely death just a few years ago. I've visited the Carter House, and the museum there, along with the Carnton cemetary with its 1481 Confederate graves. Mr. Hicks is a talented writer. Toward the end of his narrative, he makes rather obvious but important references to remembering the thousands who fell (on both sides). The battlefield in Franklin is notorious for its LACK of preservation. By bringing the story of the battle and Carrie McGavock to life, he does a great service to us, the living. I found the narratives of Sgt. Cashwell to be particularly well written and moving. Surely many who made that fateful charge on November 30, 1864 knew they were going to die. Sgt. Cashwell ruminates about facing death and overcomes his fear by embracing it. Over 9,000 Americans died in five hours, most in the first forty minutes. Carrie McGavock honored the dead by caring for their earthly remains. We should thank her and Robert Hicks for reminding us that it is our solemn obligation to do likewise. It has been predicted that this novel will bring more visitors to the battlefield and to Carnton. I know I will be going back--with a deeper and richer appreciation for what transpired in those five tragic hours. Widow of the South is an important book about important events.
